Small Space? 13 Creative Places to Fit a Home Office

So you don’t have a spare bedroom. So what? With a little bit of creativity and some DIY skillz, you can totally squeeze a home office into your space. It can be a daunting task trying to find the best way to accommodate a creative and inspiring working environment into your home, especially when you barely have enough room for a full-sized sofa. Whether it’s a closet that isn’t living up to its potential or a space under the stairs you didn’t even know existed, check out these 13 creative ideas for some mini office inspiration.

1. In the Attic: Instead of dismissing the attic as storage space, use the peaked roof to your advantage and fit a desk right where you won’t hit your head when you stand up. Take advantage of all the natural light for your desk and invest in a good coat of paint if your attic feels a little dingy. (via Style at Home)

2. In the Closet: It might be a lot to give up a closet, especially when you’re living in a small space, but if you work from home or are in desperate need of a distinct office space, the closet is a no-construction dream. Plus you can always use the space above the desk as closet storage. (via Apartment Therapy)

3. Find the Quirky Nooks: If you live in an older house or apartment, there might be a secret nook that you don’t even know about. This old dumbwaiter station was just the right size to tuck a desk and a computer for an office that isn’t in the way at all. (via Lonny)

4. In the Dining Room: Maybe you find yourself eating most of your meals in the living room or kitchen? If your dining room table doesn’t get that much use, you might want to consider turning it into an office. You could always tuck everything into a cupboard or bookshelf when you host those fabulous dinner parties. (via Apartment Therapy)

5. Built into the Bookcase: If you’re blessed with built-ins, make the most of their potential and add a slide-out desk top that disappears when not in use. If you don’t want to deal with construction, a fold-down or floating shelf uses the same idea. (via Lonny)

6. Under the Stairs: Honestly, what else are you going to do with this little space? Since all you really need is space for a laptop and a cup of coffee, the tiniest space under the stairs can be the perfect spot to tuck a teeny tiny office. (via Look4Deco)

7. In Plain Sight: Work-from-home types can benefit from getting things done in an open and comfortable space like the living room, but you’ll have to be careful about work boundaries since you’ll never really leave the office. (via The Glitter Guide)

8. The Bedside Office: Falling asleep at your desk takes on a whole new meaning if you put the office in the bedroom. While most would recommend keeping work outside of the bedroom, if you’re tight on space, making your nightstand work double-duty as a desk is a great solution. (via Kate Collins Interiors)

9. Behind the Sofa: The space behind the couch can sometimes handle a narrow desk without making the room look too crowded. The secret is to go as narrow as possible and probably go the full length of the sofa so you have as much workspace as possible. (via HGTV)

10. As a Window Seat: Seriously you guys, you can put a desk anywhere. Unless you’re doing some serious napping on your window seat, cut it a little short and add a tiny desk at the end. (via The Jungalow)

11. On a Wall: If you find yourself working mainly from your laptop and only need a desk for organization and filing, a wall system can be a great option. Pick a whole wall or just part of it to put everything you need while working. Add hooks for hanging objects and small baskets if needed. (via Better Homes and Gardens)

12. Next to the Fireplace: Got an awkward corner between the fireplace and a window? You could put a bookcase there, or maybe a chair, but both options leave you with a lot of wasted space. Tuck a tiny desk into the nook for an office that doesn’t get in anybody’s way. (via Apartment Therapy)

13. In a Corner: If you’re struggling to figure out how to decorate around structural columns in your apartment or studio, this could be a brilliant solution. It’s a corner office — get it? (via Apartment Therapy)

Classic patterns like stripes and toile, romantic silhouettes, and fancy flourishes like fringe and tassels have been beautifully making their way into interiors — and no one captures this dreamy aesthetic quite like celebrity interior designer and home stager Francesca Grace. The creative force behind Somme, a darling interior design shop located in LA’s Silverlake neighborhood, Francesca curates a world of European vintage glamour with a soulful, lived-in feel.

Find out more about the romantic design trend & get some cozy home decor inspiration below!

Gavin Cater

On a recent visit, B+C's VP of Content, Ali Ives, and I wandered into Somme and were instantly smitten. Imagine cottagecore with depth, where antique treasures meet bold, layered styling that feels both timeless and unexpected.

Francesca is a master at crafting vintage-inspired spaces with a distinct, modern POV. Here, she shares insights on her design philosophy, her latest collaborations, and her stunning transformation of a $24 million estate now on the market.

Gavin Cater

B+C: How would you define your aesthetic?

Francesca: I’d define my aesthetic as eclectic, nostalgic, and unexpected. It’s about mixing eras, textures and patterns in a way that feels curated and collected over time — like stepping into a space with history and soul.

Gavin Cater

B+C: How do you make a space feel one-of-a-kind?

Francesca: I love designing spaces that have depth and a bit of tension, whether it’s a balance of feminine and masculine, vintage and modern, or soft and bold. To make a space personal, I lean into unique, one-of-a-kind pieces — antiques, art with a story, textiles that feel lived-in. I want it to feel like someone’s life has unfolded there, not like a staged set.

Gavin Cater

B+C: What's the strangest or most surprising source of inspiration you've ever drawn from?

Francesca:I love wandering through European flea markets, where every object has a history, or getting lost in an old city and noticing the way time has shaped its architecture. Even something as simple as the tilework in a tiny café or the way laundry hangs between buildings can spark an idea. LA still influences me in the way it blends so many cultures and eras, but traveling pushes me to see design through a different lens — less polished, more lived-in, always with a story to tell.

Gavin Cater

B+C: What is your design pet-peeve?

Francesca: Anything that feels too sterile or overly "designed" with no personality. I’m also so over the idea that everything has to be beige to be timeless — give me color, give me texture, give me something with character!

Gavin Cater

B+C: You recently staged and styled a 6-bed, 9-bath Spanish-Mediterranean Bel Air Estate that just hit the market for $24M. What were your design goals for this Bel Air project, which leans into the more neutral territory?

Francesca: Our goal was to use our furniture and décor to enhance the home’s Spanish-Mediterranean elegance while introducing a sense of modern livability. We wanted every piece to feel intentional — respecting the architecture while making the space feel fresh, inviting, and effortlessly luxurious.

Will Myers

Francesca: To achieve this, I partnered with home decor brand Olive Ateliers and leaned into organic textures and warm, neutral tones. Soft linen upholstery, sculptural wood accents, and vintage-inspired statement pieces brought depth and a sense of history, ensuring the interiors felt collected rather than staged.

Will Myers

Francesca: In spaces like the living and dining areas, we focused on balancing grandeur with intimacy — placing oversized, plush seating to emphasize comfort while layering in antique and contemporary elements to create visual intrigue. The use of ceramic vessels, textured textiles, and aged metals further complemented the home’s natural materials.

Will Myers

Francesca: For the bedrooms, we aimed for elevated serenity, incorporating soft, layered bedding and curated accent furniture to create a retreat-like atmosphere.

Will Myers

Francesca: Overall, the staging was designed to bridge the past and present, celebrating the home’s timeless craftsmanship while making it feel approachable and effortless for modern living.

Christopher Amitrano/CS8 Photography

B+C: You recently worked with designer Amr Samaha of Samaha Studio on his latest project, an eco-conscious ranchette in Beverly Hills. He said he pulled heavily from his Egyptian background, citing the mashrabiya-inspired front door as an example of the textures and tones of historic Cairo. "Every decision, from materials to layout, was made with the intention to tell a cohesive story," he said. How did you stage the home to complete the story?

Francesca: For the Beverly Hills project at 1300 Shadybrook Drive, our aim was to stage the home in a way that accentuated its contemporary architecture and designer fixtures while creating an inviting and aspirational atmosphere for potential buyers.

In the living room, we placed a plush, earth-toned seating arrangement to complement the home's incredible steel fireplace and built-in cabinetry. To add a little extra warmth and character to the living room I added these gorgeous Myrtle Accent Chairs from Arhaus that I felt really elevated the space.

Christopher Amitrano/CS8 Photography

Francesca: In the dining room I wanted it to feel really funky and eclectic so we added some really fun sculptural dining chairs from Neue Maison. We brought in some incredible art by CLEW and Kader Boly that really amplify the appeal of the home.

Christopher Amitrano/CS8 Photography

Francesca: For the bedrooms, we aimed to create serene retreats by using soft, layered bedding and understated decor while still infusing some pops of color. I wanted the bedrooms to provide a sense of luxury while still feeling like cozy and warm.

Christopher Amitrano/CS8 Photography

Francesca: Throughout the home, we utilized accessories such as ceramic vases, greenery, and area rugs to add depth and cohesion to the overall design. Our goal was to present a lifestyle that potential buyers could envision themselves enjoying, thereby enhancing the home's appeal.

Ben Richards / Naoki Terada

Modernist

If you favor simplicity, functionality, and clean lines, this design style rooted in the early 20th century is your core aesthetic. Freund describes this aesthetic as a "melting pot" that blends elements from the past with trendy pieces, colors, and materials. Casa Muñoz, the Madrid-based apartment of Spanish supermodel Eugenia Silva, was designed by wife-and-husband team Mafalda Muñoz and Gonzalo Machado with this aesthetic in mind.

Paul Massey / House & Garden © Conde Nast

Tropical

Climate plays a crucial role in design, especially in tropical regions, where homes must be thoughtfully designed to adapt to and limit its effects. Covered porches, concrete and tile flooring, and an invisible line between indoors and out define this decor style. Anita Calero makes it look effortlessly elegant in this Colombia home.

Mike Karlsson Lundgren / Cappelen Dimyr

Rustic

Rustic is about being ok with the imperfections and embracing natural beauty with raw, organic elements like weathered wood, stone, and earthy tones. It celebrates a cozy, lived-in feel, a place you can kick up your heels and just chill. It also has a Scandi vibe as in this Maja Dixdotter-designed Swedish country home.

Eric Piasecki

Deco Inspired

You may have elements of the Art Deco aesthetic in your space as it has a timeless elegance to it with sleek lines, luxe materials, and geometric patterns. This quintessential Art Deco apartment in Chicago was designed by Steven Gambrel.

Netflix's latest true crime docuseries, Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer, just dropped — and you definitely wanna bookmark it for your next binge-watch! This documentary focuses on the chilling mystery of the Gilgo Beach murders, where multiple women disappeared from 1993 to 2010 in Long Island. But this isn't just about the grim details – director Liz Garbus features the fierce determination of Mari Gilbert, whose search for her missing daughter, Shannan, unexpectedly cracked open a much larger, heartbreaking case.

As this docuseries continues to climb the charts, you don't wanna miss it! Here's everything you need to know, from highlighting the initial delays in the investigation to celebrating the unwavering spirit of a mother who refused to let her daughter's story fade.

Scroll to find out everything you need to know about Gone Girls on Netflix.

What is 'Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer' about?

Netflix

The three-episode Netflix docuseries Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer recently premiered on March 31, delving back into the brutal murders of seven women in Gilgo Beach and how investigators came to arrest their accused killer, Rex Heuermann.

Between 1993 and 2010, each of the seven women, who were in their 20s and worked as sex workers, went missing. Director Liz Garbus opens the docuseries by focusing on Mari Gilbert, whose search for her missing daughter, Shannan Gilbert, ultimately led to the discovery of the other victims. Liz also directed Lost Girls, a 2020 fictionalized retelling of the quest for answers in Shannan's disappearance.

The docuseries, which is climbing Netflix's charts, focuses on the victims and their families, as well as how the investigation into pinpointing their killer was stalled for years. Yet, after a new task force was formed in February 2022, the police were able to identify a suspect, Rex Heuermann, within six weeks.

While creating Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer, Liz Garbus intentionally set out to humanize the victims and exclude speculations regarding Heuermann. Still, it includes interviews with journalists, law enforcement officers, the victims' loved ones, and those who knew the alleged killer.

What happened to Shannan Gilbert?

Netflix

Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer sheds light on how the investigation into Shannan Gilbert's case was delayed, suggesting the police didn't take her disappearance seriously or allocate appropriate resources to the search due to her occupation. However, her mother, Mari, never stopped trying to keep her daughter's story alive in the media, and eventually, "The Gilgo Four" were found.

Who else were victims of the Gilgo Beach Killer?

The remains of four women, 25-year-old Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 24-year-old Melissa Barthelemy, 22-year-old Megan Waterman, and 27-year-old Amber Costello, were discovered wrapped in burlap along Long Island's Gilgo Beach.

Then, six additional sets of remains were uncovered in the same area before Shannan Gilbert was found in December 2011. They included Jessica Taylor, who'd been missing since 2003; Valerie Mack, missing since 2000; an unidentified toddler girl, an unidentified Asian man, Karen Vergata, missing since 1996; and a woman nicknamed "Peaches" due to a tattoo on her torso who turned out to be the unidentified toddler's mother.

Who is the Gilgo Beach Killer?

Netflix

Rex Heuermann, a 61-year-old New York architect from Massapequa, was arrested years later and charged with killing Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, and Amber Costello in July 2023. In 2024, he was also charged with four more murders, including that of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Jessica Taylor, Sandra Costilla, and Valeria Mack.

But despite the search for Shannan Gilbert being what led the police to Rex, he has not been charged in relation to her case. Her death was ruled an "unfortunate incident" after she allegedly ran into a marsh and drowned.

What happened during the Gilgo Beach Killer case?

Netflix

Heuermann pleaded not guilty and is currently incarcerated at the Riverhead Correctional Facility in Suffolk County. His defense team reportedly petitioned the court to try the murders in multiple trials as opposed to tying them together in one trial.

In response, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office argued the seven victims are "inextricably interwoven by geographic proximity, victimology, digital and physical evidence, forensic analysis, and the defendant's own planning document." Judge Timothy Mazzei will rule on how the murders will be tried.

Another petition put forth by Heuermann's defense regards the exclusion of certain DNA testing, known as nuclear DNA or whole genome sequencing, arguing it hasn't been used in a New York court of law and isn't widely accepted by the scientific community.

"The advancement of forensic science and nuclear DNA analysis involving whole genome sequencing has allowed law enforcement to now link genetic profiles consistent with the defendant, and/or individuals who have resided with him, to six of the seven victims through hairs found at the crime scene and/or on the victims," rebutted Assistant District Attorney Andrew Lee.

Again, Judge Timothy Mazzei has to determine if the nuclear DNA evidence can be used. So, a trial date has not yet been set.

Where can I watch the 'Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer' series?
