This College Student Is on a Mission to Expose Fake Clinics in Her South Texas Community

Crisis pregnancy centers, or CPCs, are religious centers that pose as clinics in order to convince people not to have an abortion. These fake clinics undermine women’s health care decisionmaking, and reproductive choice advocates like 22-year-old Ofelia Alonso are working hard to expose them.

Alonso, a student at the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley, works with Advocates for Youth to help draw attention to the CPCs operating in her south Texas community. Until recently, the Rio Grande Valley had no abortion clinics; now they have one, Whole Woman’s Health in McAllen, Texas. The region has four CPCs.

“At the end of the day, not only are CPCs not-real medical establishments that lie to people, they also use their centers as a front for anti-abortion organizing,” Alonso tells Brit + Co.

CPCs vastly outnumber abortion clinics across the nation. According to the Supreme Court filing for NIFLA v. Becerra, there are an estimated 2,500 and 4,000 crisis pregnancy centers in the US. Comparatively, the US had just 788 abortion clinics as of 2014, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

CPCs will often establish their centers in close proximity to actual abortion clinics as a strategy to lead patients into their facilities, instead. And, often, they bear a superficial resemblance to clinics; most provide pregnancy testing and many also offer ultrasounds. They might help pregnant women sign up for programs like Medicaid to cover the medical costs of pregnancy or connect women to adoption resources if they know they aren’t able to keep their baby. In the process, workers at crisis pregnancy centers dole out misleading and factually inaccurate ideas about abortion.

Some of the common lies that CPC workers tell about abortion is that having an abortion means a person will be unable to get pregnant later on, and that abortion leaves women emotionally traumatized. Of course, there’s no medical evidence to support either of these false claims. But that doesn’t stop CPCs from giving bad information to vulnerable people, especially in marginalized communities.

According to a 2015 report from NARAL Pro-Choice America, “CPCs purposely place their outdoor advertising near high schools, colleges, and low-income neighborhoods.”

In some instances, CPCs explicitly target predominantly Black communities. Care Net, a network of CPCs, has purchased ads on BET, and creates ads targeting Black communities that compare abortion to slavery, according to the report.

To combat the dangerous and insidious operation of crisis pregnancy centers in south Texas, Alonso worked on the 1 in 3 campaign, a week-long effort to expose CPCs that launched in October of last year. During the campaign, Alonso says she and her fellow volunteers gave presentations and set up tables on college campuses.

“It was very obvious that people didn’t know CPCs aren’t real clinics, which is part of the danger. They’re seen as a legitimate medical establishment and people trust them as a legitimate medical establishment,” Alonso says.

In addition to educating the public about the existence and dangers of CPCs, Alonso and others staged a protest at two of the centers in the Rio Grande Valley. Alonso tells us that one of the centers they protested in McAllen is notorious for harassing patients outside the Valley’s one abortion clinic.

Since the campaign, Alonso tells us that she and others with Advocates for Youth have continued to table at colleges and speak out about CPCs. Now that the practices CPCs are being considered by the Supreme Court, Alonso says that there’s been even more opportunity to talk about how these organizations deceive and potentially endanger patients.

A decision on the case is expected by summer.

After only two episodes of Only Murders in the Building season 4, Hulu renewed the series for season 5! I'm so excited that the show breaks a recent pattern of cancelling shows after the third or fourth season, giving us more time with our favorite characters, and I'm not the only one.

"Here we go again… my favorite set family. I’m coming home!" Selena Gomez says in an Instagram post, while the official Only Murders account made their own post, saying, "We had our lawyers call business affairs. Turned the 4 into a 5. #OnlyMurdersInTheBuilding is coming back for Season 5!!"

Here's everything you need to know about Only Murders in the Building season 5, coming to Hulu soon.

What is Only Murders in the Building season 5 about?

Patrick Harbron/Disney

Only Murders in the Building Season 5 Plot

We finally got our first details about Only Murders season 5 — and we're going in a direction I totally didn't expect. When Sofia visits Mabel and Charles in the season 4 ending, and asks them to find her missing husband, she's disappointed when they turn her down. And since Téa Leoni just joined the season 5 cast, it looks like she's not taking no for an answer.

“I think she’s the great tease at the end of the finale and a little bit of an intriguing bump forward,” co-creator John Hoffman says in an interview with Deadline. “She’s an extension of the little news report in Episode 9 that Mabel makes note of at the hospital. [Sofia] is the wife of the Dry Cleaning King of Brooklyn, and maybe a couple of dry cleaning outlets in Manhattan, as well, we may come to know...It’s a world opened up potentially that we haven’t talked about too much yet in New York, so she holds a lot of intrigue.”

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

New York's underground is a wild space that we haven't really seen on Only Murders yet so I know we're in for one very interesting season — because if this show is going to go there, they're going to go there.

Executive producer Dan Fogelman told The Wrapwe can look forward to “another big fun mystery the writers have been cooking up," while Hoffman has gone on the record saying the new episodes will “hit on some very current things going on within New York, specifically very relevant things that are happening in the city right now.”

When is Only Murders in the Building season 5 coming out?

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

Only Murders in the Building Season 5 Release Date

According to The Wrap, Only Murders is looking to begin production on season 5 in March of 2025. Considering we've had a new season over the last four years (with season 1 in 2021, season 2 in 2022, season 3 in 2023, and season 4 in 2024), we're expecting to see season 5 in 2025. Stay tuned for the official Only Murders in the Building season 5 release date.

Who's in Only Murders in the Building season 5?

Eric McCandless/Disney

Only Murders in the Building Season 5 Cast

The cast of Only Murders in the Building includes Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin. Téa Leoni will also return as Sofia Caccimelio, whose husband Nicky has gone missing.

According to Dan Fogelman, “we can expect more big guest stars that’ll probably be announced sooner rather than later,” he tells The Wrap.

Season 3 featured Ashley Park, Paul Rudd, Meryl Streep, and Jesse Williams, while season 4 stars Streep, Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria, Kumail Nanjiani, Desmin Borges, Siena Werber, Lilian Rebelo, and Molly Shannon.

"I am so grateful that I have been surrounded by human beings that make me better, challenge me, remind me day after day that every moment is a gift," Selena Gomez says about working with Martin and Short. "That’s my pure joy. I thank god for the era I’m in. It’s been the best yet."

Will there be an Only Murders in the Building season 5?

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

Yes, Only Murders in the Building has been renewed for season 5! On September 4, Variety confirmed the next installment will have 10 episodes, just like the seasons before it. The latest season premiered on Hulu August 27, and will last until October 29 (just in time to try out an Only Murders Halloween costume!)

Just like the season 3 ending set up season 4, we'll have to wait for the October finale to figure out what kind of mayhem Mabel, Oliver, and Charles will get into next season. "We hope you like it!" Selena Gomez says in the Only Murders in the Building account's announcement, while Martin Short adds, "How exciting is that?"

"We're so exciting to be coming back," Steve Martin says. We're excited too!!

Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper are historically private when it comes to the ins-and-outs of their relationship, but Gigi just gave us a peak behind the curtain in a recent interview with Vogue. Gigi gave some rare details on their "very romantic" relationship, and she finally revealed how she actually met the Silver Linings Playbook actor. Here's everything we found out!

Scroll to find out how Gigi Hadid met Bradley Cooper!

Gigi told Vogue that she and Bradley met during a birthday party for one of their mutual friend's children — sounds pretty normal, right? I mean, so far as normal gets when two major celebrities show up to the same party. But still, Gigi deems it normal.

“You want to give yourself a normal experience of dating, and even for my friends who aren’t public figures, that’s hard. Where do you go? And, what? You just start talking to people?" she said. "And then there’s another added layer of privacy and security. You want to believe that people are going to have your back and not call TMZ or go on Deuxmoi or whatever, but you just don’t know.”

Since meeting, Gigi said she and Bradley are "very romantic and happy" — something she definitely values in her relationship. “I think just getting to the point where knowing what you want and deserve in a relationship is essential, and then to find someone that is in a place in their life where they know what they want and deserve…and you both do work separately to come together and be the best partner that you can be," she explained. "I just feel really lucky. Yeah, lucky’s the word."

And at the end of the day, Gigi said that Bradley gives her "so much" encouragement and belief. She said, “For those people you admire to encourage you, it can create so much belief in yourself."

We love to see a mature, supportive, adult relationship like this thrive! Here's to seeing what's next for these two love birds!

The Summer I Turned Pretty fans, we finally have an update on our favorite show! Prime Video just announced that season 3, starring Lola Tung, Christopher Briney, and Gavin Casalegno will be coming in July — and that this season (which has 3 extra episodes, FYI!) will be the show's final season. But while fans weren't too surprised by the announcement (Jenny Han only wrote three books, after all), there's one detail of the official season 3 poster that has TV fans in a tizzy.

Keep reading for a breakdown of the craziest The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 theory yet.

'The Summer I Turned Pretty' fans can't wait to return to Cousins

The official TSITP account posted the poster for season 3 on March 7, confirming the next episodes were dropping in July. "Summer is just a season away," the caption reads. "The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 premieres this July on Prime Video."

And fans immediately flooded the comments cheering for Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah, saying everything from "Prepares to defend Conrad for one last summer" to "WHERE ARE ALL THE JELLY SUPORTERS COME ON GUYS WE NEED TO STAND UP FOR WHATS RIGHT."

Even Spotify's Instagram picked a side by commenting, "team conrad we have WAITED for this day."

But some eagle-eyed fans picked up on one detail about the poster that's different than season 1 and 2: Belly's by herself.

@thesummeriturnedpretty

We'll always have summer ☀️

♬ original sound - the summer i turned pretty

While the poster for The Summer I Turned Pretty season 1 features Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah with the summer house in the background, and the main poster for season 2 features the trio sitting on the beach, The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 poster features Belly standing by herself in front of a bush of hydrangeas. Because, y'all, Belly is in bloom.

She's not the same girl she was at the start of the series — and even if she still has a ton of questions about life (don't we all?) she has way more confidence. She's not lost.

And could the fact Belly stands alone on the poster be a clue to the end of the series? "this poster screams belly choosing herself in the end and I’m all here for it!" one X user tweeted.

@_cooper_koch_ The summer I turned pretty season 3 Belly and Conrad 😍 #foryou#pourtoi#fyp#edit#tiktok#viral#thesummeriturnedpretty#belly#conradfisher @Christopher Briney ♬ Gorgeous - Taylor Swift

Although I will point out Belly's yellow dress actually made its rounds on social media last year when videos of Lola Tung and Christopher Briney filming together went viral. So we'll have to tune in this July to figure out who Belly ends up with for sure ;).
