9 of the Coolest Kickstarters + Beyond to Crowdfund Right Now

Regular readers know how obsessed we are with crowdfunding projects. We round ’em up twice a month, usually around a specific theme. This time around we’re getting a little wild: no theme, just the best of the best. In this list, there’s everything from kitchen gadgets you wish you had to a 3D printer that could change the entire fashion industry and even a subscription lunch service on a mission to end sad desk meals for good. It just goes to show you that the ways to be creative are vast and tireless, and we’ll never ever get sick of it.

1. Dog Collar That Keeps Dogs Active: This “smart” collar for dogs tracks their activity level and the amount of calories burned. The goal is for owners to have the information they need to make sure their pet is healthy. It also makes it easy for pet owners to track this vital information so they can share it with their pet’s vet. Just like the fitness trackers us adults are fawning over these days, the collar allows pet owners to set short and long-term goals. Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if you could sync it to your smartphone or smartwatch so you and your pet could stay fit together? Maybe for the upgrade.

2. A “Green” Electric Tea Kettle: Okay tea enthusiasts, this one’s for you. The Miito is a portable burner that heats the liquid directly, cutting down on the amount of energy used. A bonus to warming the water directly is that it’s also faster, so you can enjoy your steaming cuppa tea even sooner. How it works? The user fills the vessel with the amount of water they want warmed, puts it on the “burner” and sticks the heating rod in it. Not a tea drinker? It works for anything you want to heat up, like soup or hot chocolate.

3. Magnetic Tablet Stand: Not only is this little gadget a portable stand for your tablet, but it also tidies up any electronic cables, like your USB cord or headphones. Also, because it’s magnetic, you can stick it on your fridge or anything metal. It is even strong enough to hold your phone. The masterminds behind this project really solved several annoyances of modern living all with something that’s shorter than your index finger.

4. Crazy Fast Battery Charger: This invention, known as the Bolt2, is small, but it packs a lot of power. Boasting two USB ports so you can charge your phone and computer at the same time, it charges electronics four times faster than any USB port on the market right now. It charges when connected to any outlet and you can just throw it in your purse and use it whenever your phone, laptop or tablet is running out of juice. No wonder 2,000 people have already backed it.

5. Independent Pediatrician in Nepal: When pediatrician Suraj Raman saw the news of the devastating earthquakes in Nepal, he knew he had to do something to help. Using his own money, he booked a flight to India, risking his life to help others. Since he is working independently, he is trying to raise money to get the survivors the medical supplies and medicines they need. Helping his cause will truly save lives.

6. A Trashcan That Vacuums: Another invention that has the potential to make our kitchens “smarter” (if funded) is this genius trashcan that sucks up grime. We know we aren’t the only ones whose kitchen floor is a magnet for crumbs, dust and cat hair. This trashcan/vacuum allows people to actually sweep the grime right into a small opening at its base, no lifting, pouring or spilling required. This cleaning can also has an app (yes, really), so you can set up reminders for when you need to take out the garbage or order new trash bags.

7. Documentary Exposing Cruelty of Bull Fighting: Independent filmmaker Miguel Angel Rolland’s documentary Santa Fiesta exposes the vast animal cruelty that takes place during bull fights and religious ceremonies in Spain. He calls it a genocide, siting that 60,000 animals die each year from the “celebrations.” Here in the States, it can be easy to turn a blind eye and ignore the problem, but this film has potential to spark real change.

8. 3D Fabric Printer: Even if you’re not as 3D printing-obsessed as we may be (guilty), this innovation is huge for aspiring fashion designers, clothing wear-ers and, um, everyone else. We’ve been covering Electroloom, the world’s first fabric printer, since it was just a dream some cool guys had — and are pretty stoked to see it up and running on Kickstarter. Basically, the designer does everything digitally in CAD or Illustrator and puts the mold in the machine, and out comes the finished product. Right now, the printer is quite large and reminiscent of early computers that took up almost a whole room. But considering how small computers are now, we’re excited to see how this 3D printer will continue to evolve.

9. Subscription Lunch Boxes: If you’re like most people, lunchtime is gulping down a sad sandwich or salad you brought from home while sitting in front of your computer. But the forces behind Cozy Feast want the masses to know it doesn’t have to be that way. They are looking for seed money to create a subscription service of hand-crafted meals delivered right to customers’ offices. Located in the Washington, D.C. area, they want the food to be locally sourced, healthy and affordable.

If you waited for months — if not years! —for a new MacBook, you got what you were waiting for. However, is it everything you were hoping for? Probably not. Although the new smart touch bar and fingerprint ID are really rad new features, is that enough to make up for the loss of some of your ports? Well, turns out they could be, if you’re willing to shell out for this cool new add-on.

A new Indiegogo campaign, called Line Dock, is an aluminum base that sits at the bottom of your laptop. It not only adds 15 hours of battery life, it gives your computer back all of the ports that went away in the update (3 USB, HDMI, MiniDisplay Port and an SD Card Reader). And if you need any more storage for your computer, the Line Dock will provide that too — up to 1 terabyte of storage.

However, there’s just one setback to the dream machine: It won’t ship out until June 2017. If you can wait that long, the Indiegogo campaign is accepting orders until December 16. Prices start at $149 and go all the way up to $599 for a premium version.

I truly feel like I’ve been living under a rock when it comes to what’s good at Whole Foods. Turns out, they’ve been hiding some really impressive deals on groceries in the shadows, but I’m here to shed some light on ‘em. Whole Foods offers savings every week, and I’m fully convinced that my local Whole Foods will be seeing a whole lot more of me from now on.

Scroll on for details on Whole Foods’ top deals to shop starting today!

1. BOGO 50% off packaged soups (Tuesdays)

Tuesdays and Fridays are the main days of the week that Whole Foods offers savings on their groceries. The first amazing deal for Tuesdays is BOGO 50% off packaged soups – perfect for this time of year!

They’ve got every kind of flavor from minestrone and chicken noodle to Italian wedding and broccoli cheddar. Their packaged soups average out at about $9 per 24-ounce tub, so saving 50% on one when you buy one is pretty good, especially for meal prep purposes.

2. $2 off classic and organic rotisserie chickens (Tuesdays)

You can take $2 off two kinds of Whole Foods’ rotisserie chickens every Tuesday. Their classic rotisserie chicken goes for $9 while the organic version sells for $13. I love using rotisserie chicken for soups, sandwiches, wraps, and pastas, so getting a whole chicken to use for recipes all week long for just $7 is so nice!

3. $8 large cheese pizzas (Friday)

Sometimes you just do not feel like cooking on a Friday evening after work – that’s where this Whole Foods savings hack comes in! Every Friday, you can get a large cheese pizza for $8. While there’s nothing wrong with a plain cheese pizza (nostalgia galore!), I’d take advantage of this deal then bulk up my slices with various toppings like peppers, pepperoni, and olives.

Ooh, fancy! Every Friday, Whole Foods’ wild caught oysters go for $1 a pop. Buy a dozen for just $12, and you’re golden. This deal would be perfect for a bougie at-home date night.

Okay, guilty pleasure announcement: We LOVE browsing through Kickstarter and Indiegogo for the latest and greatest finds (don’t worry, even Taylor Swift does it). From girlboss films to multi-functional workout gear, there’s always something new to discover. Plus, supporting innovative small businesses is definitely a bonus. Here are 10 cool crowdfunds that we definitely can’t wait to support.

1. Toasteroid: Jazz up your morning routine with this cool toast tech (yes, that’s actually a thing). The Toasteroid allows you to burn designs, messages and drawings into your toast using their complementary smartphone app. Can you say best brunch plans ever?!

2. Pilot Smart Earpiece Language Translator: If you’ve ever met a cutie that doesn’t speak the same language as you, this new earpiece translator just might be the lifesaver you’re looking for. Say goodbye to awkward Google translate conversations — the Pilot Smart Earpiece will instantly translate your conversations for seamless small talk.

3. LVL: We’ll be the first to admit that there are tons of health wearables on the market, but this chic bracelet stands out for one major reason. LVL is a wearable hydration monitor that scientifically measures how much you need to drink to stay at peak capability (plus it tracks activity, sleep, mood and heart rate too).

4. MOTI: Everyone wants to be able to say that they actually stuck with their New Years resolutions this year, but breaking a bad habit can sometimes feel impossible. Meet MOTI, the habit breaker extraordinaire. Based on the latest insights from behavioral science and social robotics, MOTI sets reminders, celebrations and accountability all through the cute-sized device.

5. Hustle: There’s no question that we love a good planner (we even have adorable planner stickers to really get creative with it). Hustle takes everything we love about planners, but instead of using tons of traditional paper, it’s made entirely from stone paper (AKA no water, acid or airborne, water-borne or solid waste is used to make it).

6. Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: Inspire the young lady in your life to live boldly with this awesome collection of 100 bedtimes stories about 100 extraordinary women, illustrated by 100 female artists.

7. Keep Pursuing Project Zero G Backpack: If you’ve ever gotten a backache from carrying around too much stuff in your bag, you have to check out this new product from Keep Pursuing, pronto. Claiming to be the first backpack designed to make 20 pounds feel like 10, it’s perfect for the over-packer and long-haul traveler.

8. OLO: There’s no question that 3D printing is the must-have tech of the future, but many designers can’t actually use it properly because it is just too darn expensive. OLO is the first ever smartphone 3D printer that costs just $99. It’s portable, multi-material… and definitely on our Christmas list.

9. BioRing: As much as we love our wearables, most of them are chunky and, to be honest, just plain ugly. BioRing is a simple wellness wearable that automatically measures everything you could ever want (calorie intake, calorie burn, heart rate, sleep) while looking cool on your finger.

10. BiCable: Although we still don’t know how we feel about Apple nixing the headphone jack, we do understand their point about cords being a pain. The BiCable is a cord hater’s dream, as it’s basically an all-in-one cord that can charge just about anything (Android, iPhone, Beats Headphones… you name it).

As much as I love celebrity couples, I love celebrity sibling relationships even more. And Elle and Dakota Fanning are two sisters I've grown up watching since I first saw Dreamer in 2005. Considering Elle Fanning is only five months older than me, and I have a sister of my own, this is one relationship that feels particularly familiar. And while Elle has also watched Dakota Fanning act since we were kids, Dakota just revealed seeing Elle onscreen is just as special for her.

Here's why Dakota & Elle Fanning get emotional seeing each other onscreen.

Elle remembers "sobbing" during one particularly emotional Dakota Fanning movie.

“When Elle’s in anything, it makes me feel it deeper,” Dakota Fanning said at TheWrap’s Power Women Summit on December 3. “She never can fully disappear into a character totally for me as her sister. She obviously does an amazing job, but I’m always gonna see my little sister a little bit.”

And Elle is just as touched by Dakota's roles, and remembers "uncontrollably sobbing" after seeing Now Is Good, a movie where Dakota's character was dying of cancer. “Because it was my sister, I had a real traumatic reaction after that premiere and the screening,” Elle says. “Obviously the acting, but it was something felt on a deeper level.”

“I’m doing this job, I’m an actor because my sister started before me and I watched her,” Elle continues. “I wanted to do exactly what my big sister wanted to do.”

And their movies have also made an impact on everyone who watches them.

When Brit + Co caught up with Dakota Fanning at the world premiere of The Watchers, I had to ask about one of her most iconic movies: Uptown Girls. "I love it," she says of TikTok memes and edits giving the movie new life. "It's nostalgic for people who are kind of around my age, who grew up watching that movie, I think it's like a comfort movie for people. And so I love that people are still revisiting it and loving it. And maybe now that everyone's older [they're] understanding different things about it."

Dakota starred opposite Brittany Murphy, who also had roles in movies like Clueless, 8 Mile, and Girl, Interrupted. Brittany passed away in 2009 when Dakota was 15. "I loved Brittany so much and I still miss her," she says. "So anytime that she has, you know, a moment where people think about her is also nice."

You can see Elle Fanning in A Complete Unknown, in theaters December 25, and you can also stream Dakota Fanning's new show The Perfect Couple on Netflix now.
