What Innovation Looks Like for Black and Latinx Female Founders

The need for women to believe in their ideas and bet on themselves has never been more prominent in our conversations than it is right now. We are all looking for resources and innovative ways to disrupt the status quo. Many of us are finally ready to test out our wildest ideas in search of a viable business to build upon, while trying to define ourselves in this new normal.

For women, the obstacles are always complicated to navigate and obtaining access to capital is a constant uphill battle that few endure successfully. For Black and Latinx women, those barriers to opportunity are amplified. During a time when conversations about the intersection of gender and race in Silicon Valley were practically nonexistent, digitalundivided was founded with the mission of using data and advocacy to spur economic growth and create pathways for Black and Latinx women entrepreneurs. We spotted the problem early on in 2012 and built solutions to help women of color succeed. Having served as an advisor for the organization since its inception, Board Co-Chair, and now CEO, I know the power of our programs and the brilliance of our alumni community.

Our programs show women of color that cultivating their curiosity creates success. We work to prove that it is possible to be innovative from anywhere with the right combination of resources and community. A pioneer in this space, digitalundivided has consistently moved the needle to create a world where all women own their work, through our proprietary research, thought leadership, and programming.

Black and Latinx women are the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs in the U.S., yet they still remain shockingly underfunded compared to others — both in securing investments and the level of investment. In fact, according to ProjectDiane 2018, for every $1.3M of investment raised on average for a white male, Black women raise just $42,000. The collection and amplification of this data is a pillar in the work that we do at digitalundivided.

Through reports such as ProjectDiane, we have been able to add concrete data on Black and Latinx female founders to an ecosystem that systemically overlooks them. At the helm of promoting an inclusive and innovative ecosystem, is the importance of data in culturally relevant spaces. Since the first bi-annual ProjectDiane Report in 2016, we've witnessed the narratives about Black and Latinx women founders spark nationwide discussions around inclusivity in entrepreneurship and innovation.

I like to say that we lead from instinct and experience and we back it up with data so there's never a question about our impact. Every time a woman of color leads in spaces of innovation and entrepreneurship, our mission is amplified and hopefully another Black or Latinx woman is influenced and motivated by their journey. Then they call us on to help catalyze their genius.

In tandem with our research, we are committed to providing powerful programming that offers community and resources to Black and Latinx women at all stages of their entrepreneurial journey. From our START program, a three week virtual training program for those at the concept stage of entrepreneurship, to micro investment initiatives supporting founders during the pandemic, digitalundivided is consistently providing avenues to ensure Black and Latinx women founders not only have a seat at the table, but are able to stay in the arena.

With nearly two decades of experience in the entrepreneurial space, I could not be more excited to take the helm at digitalundivided and push our mission forward. How long has it been since the free streaming or content creation trial you signed up for expired? We're not psychic but we're sure you're looking at us with a blank stare or a set of surprised eyes.

Subscriptions are always tricky because they offer an enticing 7 or 30-day trial with an app's endless features. At this point, we're convinced marketers know we're likely to forget about the free period which is why we often see the same in-app scripts.

If you know you're not using certain apps or streaming platforms, make sure to cancel them because $4.99 — $9.99 per week or month adds up!

2. Premium Food Delivery Services

Sigh. This one's hard to write about because we love the convenience of having food from our favorite restaurants delivered to our front door. But, that's where the lie begins because there isn't anything convenient about delivery, taxes, silverware, and tip fees on top of the cost of your order. And when you add on a premium delivery fee that seemingly cancels a free delivery, you're still paying for it in some way.

This means you could spend over $100 per year to skip one fee, and you're not guaranteed to love your order or even get it in worst case scenarios. Yikes!

3. Pesky Auto-Renewals

Did you forget that you agreed to pay for an auto-renewal of a magazine you stopped reading? It happens to the best of us, and can be one of those hidden expenses that's easy to ignore. You think, "Oh, "$12.99 per year isn't bad," until you realize that the price somehow increased when you weren't looking. It's even worse if you're subscribed to more than one magazine that you no longer care about!

4. ATM Charges

There's a reason your bank highly recommends you use their ATM's to withdraw money because external sources usually charge a fee. It may seem small, but why should you be charged to get a little of your money?

If you can, skip the extra $2.99 charge for your transaction and find your bank's ATM.

5. Your Daily Coffee Shop Order

We've all told ourselves how essential our coffee shop orders are. They help us get through our work week and feel like one of the less expensive little treats we can indulge in. But, those daily orders are adding up.

For example, let's imagine someone named Ginny spends $10 per work day on her favorite drink and breakfast order. If she does this consistently for one month, she'll have spent an extra $200 per month on them!

TBH, this extra money could go towards savings, a bill, or an unexpected emergency.

6. Weekly Nail Salon Visits

We know getting your nails done counts as self-care, but it can be an expensive form of it. One of the things we've been relying on is giving ourselves at-home manicures or relying on press-on nails. They still fulfill our beauty needs without putting a dent in our bank accounts.

7. Credit Card Interest

If you think you're imagining an increase in your credit card interest, there's a good chance you're not. And it's worth looking into how much for the specific card(s) you have.

It's not as easy to tell you not to carry a balance every month because you may have had to pay for a surgery or emergency car repair, but this is how credit card companies get us. That interest can range from an extra $100 — $300 on top of your actual balance, meaning you're only paying a tiny portion of it each month.

Our advice is to pay more than your monthly fee so that you're able to put a dent in the interest as much as possible!

8. Leaving Lights On At Home Because You 'Can Do What You Want Now'

Most adults grew up hearing how leaving lights on at home was a cardinal sin, but there's a reason why parents fussed about it so much. It costs money that will show up on the next energy bill. Take it from one of our writers whose saw one of her bills skyrocket to almost $250 when she first moved out of her parents' home.

If you have to leave a light on, look into using energy saving light bulbs or burn a few candles for a dark romance vibe.

9. Splurging On Groceries Just Because

Say it with us: overconsumption isn't a goal this year! Usually we'd insert a little joke here, but buying a ton of groceries that'll likely go to waste just because you have the money for them isn't a flex. It's wasteful to your bank account and the environment.

Stick with the groceries you usually get or make a detailed list that includes items that you're going to meal prep instead of "winging it."

10. Daily Trips To The Gas Station

We're not talking about spending money on gas here. We know you might have a daily habit of stopping by the QT or BP near your house to get your favorite juice, Gatorade, or sunflower seeds pack. Although you can include them in your grocery trip, you've somehow convinced yourself that these items taste superior coming from the shiny convenience store.

We're here to gently burst your bubble by telling you they don't. The store's layout is just beckoning you to stop similar to the urge you get in Target.

In other words, you don't need to keep making daily trips there unless you want to keep pretending you're not sure where your money's going.

I've Been Single My Whole Life — Here Are My Best Solo Valentine's Day Ideas

I'd like to consider myself a romantic person in every aspect of life. I'm constantly coming up with stories, putting ribbons in my hair, and literally stopping to smell the roses (what can I say, when you see a flower in New York City, you might as well savor it). Needless to say, Valentine's Day (and Galentine's Day) is one of my favorite holidays. Aside from the fact that it provides a brief burst of color in the bleak midwinter, it is also a reminder that no matter how tough life gets, love is always worth celebrating. There's just one catch: I have been single my whole life, which makes the constant stream of date night ideas and partner gift inspo that flood the internet this time of year feel like they're a touch out of reach.

Valentine's Day can be less than thrilling if you feel like you don't have anyone to spend it with, but take it from me: there are more than enough ways to have a great time riding solo. If you've recently gone through a breakup or you're the only single friend left in your group, here's my best advice on tackling the upcoming love season if you're single on Valentine's Day (with a little help from Dr. Jenny Taitz, author of How To Be Single And Happy).

Here's how to fully embrace being in your single era on Valentine's Day

Whether or not we admit it, there's definitely still a stigma around singleness. "Despite the fact that these days we may not need a partner to fulfill our hopes, being single remains so stigmatized, with shows depicting the need to compete to win love and headlines depicting women who are single as in an unfortunate situation," Dr. Taitz says. "It’s key to be mindful of these unhelpful messages to [keep them] from impacting how we view ourselves."

I've been on a few dates as an adult, but I often feel like I've missed out on a lot of the foundational experiences that come with being a young woman. Not to mention that it's easier than I'd like to admit to feel like there's something wrong with me if I'm the common thread through every dead-end romantic situation.

Even if comments from your friends like "They're just not good enough for you" or "You're so independent" have good intentions, not feeling desired is hard. Sometimes you just need to process those emotions in whatever way works best for your wellbeing because singleness is incredibly complex — one day I'm enjoying eating at a restaurant alone, the next a rom-com makes me cry — and as easy as it is to swing between the extremes of total happiness to bitterness, the reality is that I'm usually somewhere in between.

"Days like Valentine’s Day can be incredible opportunities to practice self-validation and self-compassion," Taitz says. "Being single on a day that can pull you to compare or feel less than is a good time to be especially kind to yourself [and act] in ways that remind you that you are enough and don’t need a plus one to feel whole."

Activities that engage your soul will help you feel good *and* romanticize self-care at the same time. I love creating a vision board in my bullet journal to see my dreams on paper, or reminding myself of where my true worth lies. If you're really struggling with feeling lonely, Taitz recommends listing out the areas of your life that matter to you, then writing down the value you want to add to each and mapping out how and why those values matter.

"There’s no way a relationship can be your full sense of worth — that’s not fair to you or the relationship and that’s not accurate in terms of what we know about happiness," she says. "Happiness hinges on being present and engaging in positive actions and having fulfilling relationships — and coupling isn’t the only source of connection (assuming it is almost like limiting your diet to strawberries — it’s not going to fill you and will deplete you)."

There is so much more to my worth than whether I have a romantic partner: I love movies and books, I love talking to my little sister on the phone, and I can spend hours happily in the kitchen listening to music and making a nourishing dinner. There's much more to your worth, too.

My mother constantly reminds me to wait for the Right person, not the Right Now person. There are pros and cons to every phase of life, and I'm very content with the pros right now. Eventually, however, I'm hoping my Valentine's Day charcuterie board for one will become a board for two.
