DIY This Camping Stool For Under $50

There is no doubt about it — I love being outdoors. I love it so much that I actually get a tightness in my chest when I’m forced to be inside on a beautiful day. (Maybe I should go see a doctor about this? Unclear.) There’s no better way to soak up summer than with days surfing at the beach and warm nights camping — what more could you want? How about a place to take a load off next to the campfire, for starters. Today we’re updating Wood & Faulk‘s DIY camping stool with waterproof canvas, for it to survive in rain or shine (or post-surfing bottom). Follow along below to see how to make one for yourself!

Materials and Tools:

  • (3) 1 1/4-inch dowels
  • 3-inch steel bolt
  • (2) 5/8-inch eyehole bolt
  • 2 acorn nuts
  • 3 brass washers
  • 3 brass 1-inch wood screws
  • 4 rivets
  • 1/4-yard waterproof canvas
  • elastic
  • measuring tape
  • drill
  • screwdriver
  • saw
  • sewing machine

Let’s get started!

Use a saw to cut down your dowels to 24 inches in length.

Measure 10.5 inches from the top of the dowel and drill a hole all the way through. We used a 5/16th drill bit. Using a smaller drill bit, drill a hole in the center of the top of the dowel. Drill about one inch down. Drill holes through and in all three dowels.

Slide the three-inch bolt through one of the dowels, thread on the eye-hole bolt and a second dowel, then secure together by screwing on an acorn bolt. Attach the last dowel by placing it on the eye-hole bolt and tightening with an acorn nut.

Time to create the seat. You’ll want to purchase waterproof or water-resistant canvas. To create the seat bottom, we used Wood & Faulk’s template and traced around it with an inch buffer. Fold the fabric in half to create two cut-outs.

Create a small tab from extra fabric and place on the inside of your two seat templates. Pin fabric in place and sew three quarters around the outside.

Turn right side out and pin the opening closed. Sew all the way around the outer edge.

Place all the dowels of the stool together and measure the circumference. Cut out this length from elastic. Sew together a tube for the elastic — your fabric tube should be twice as long as the elastic. Feed the elastic through and then sew together to form a circular band. Attach to one end of the leather strap using two rivets.

Cut a small hole, big enough for the screw to poke through, in the corner of the fabric. Screw the fabric into the stool using a washer and wood screw.

Attach the other edge of the leather strap to the seat strap using two rivets.

Pack it up and let’s go camping!

Here at camp Brit + Co we only camp with the brightest of colors and tropical patterns.

Brit Scouts know exactly what you need to build a fire — tissue paper and wood (insert crying face emoji here).

This camping stool is the perfect height for marshmallow roasting. Remember the key is to find a warm spot on the fire to slowly turn those marshmallows golden brown.

When you come across a cute dog up for adoption, it's extremely easy to get swept up by their adorable face and want to take them home on the spot. However, not all dogs are as low-maintenance as they might seem at first glance.

Certain breeds tend to come with a hefty price tag in terms of both time and money. From things like grooming needs to medical care, some dogs can leave new owners seriously surprised by all the hidden costs.

So, before you add a new furry friend to your family, it's important to educate yourself. Here are 12 dog breeds that may break the bank because of their surprisingly high-maintenance needs.

Scroll to see some of the most high-maintenance dog breeds you could get right now.

1. Labradoodle

Lars Mulder

While plenty of people love the characteristic Labradoodle affection and energy, these teddy bear dogs still require a decent amount of upkeep.

First of all, their high energy demands frequent exercise and mental stimulation, which can be time-consuming. Plus, their coats can be unpredictable, given that they're a mix of Poodle and Labrador.

That's why some Labradoodles might need daily grooming to prevent tangles and mats, while others will require professional grooming sessions.

2. French Bulldog

Rebecca Fogg

French Bulldogs may have an adorable and compact appearance, but their cute looks come with significant health and maintenance requirements.

Due to their short necks, flat faces, and stocky bodies, they often face a range of health problems, particularly brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), which affects their breathing.

This condition can result in expensive veterinary visits and pet insurance premiums. Aside from that, owners will need to clean their skin rolls regularly to avoid infections.

3. Siberian Husky

Julissa Helmuth

Siberian Huskies are extremely athletic, meaning a ton of exercise is necessary. They were bred to pull sleds for up to 100 miles every single day, so to remain happy and healthy, they require a significant amount of physical activity.

Additionally, they don't enjoy being left alone, meaning doggy daycare or a reliable pet sitter is often necessary. To top it off, their thick double coats shed year-round, and you may go through multiple vacuum cleaners just to keep your home clean.

4. Afghan Hound

Ron Lach

The Afghan Hound is a stunning breed, but its luxurious coat makes it super high-maintenance. To keep their fur in good shape, owners will have to brush daily and provide baths weekly, ensuring they carefully dry their pups with a blow dryer.

Regular oil treatments and meticulous wrapping are also needed, along with the use of snoods during mealtime to protect their hair.

5. Border Collie

Helena Lopes

Since Border Collies are so active and smart, they literally need boundless amounts of exercise and mental stimulation to keep them occupied.

These dogs excel when challenged, whether through obedience training or dog sports. If they're not kept on the move, Border Collies can become bored and a huge handful. They may act hyperactive, produce excessive noise, and get destructive.

6. Akita

Zen Chung

As working dogs, Akitas are independent, strong, and can be standoffish with strangers. Their aloof nature and protective instincts also mean they require consistent, firm training and plenty of socialization from a young age.

This breed is typically quiet, clean, and relatively easy to groom. Even so, they need substantial mental stimulation to remain well-behaved.

7. Giant Schnauzer

Brett Sayles

Even though Giant Schnauzers are affectionate, they also have a strong territorial nature, and firm training is essential from the start.

Regular grooming is a key part of their care as well, particularly around their faces. Their thick coats can become matted, and consistent brushing routines are important to maintain their well-being.

8. Tibetan Mastiff

Guang Niu/Getty Images

Tibetan Mastiffs are large dogs with strong-willed personalities that can make training a challenge. They tend to be calm and don't require a bunch of exercise, yet getting them to consistently listen to commands will take patience and persistence.

This breed is known for having an independent streak, and their territorial nature means they should always be kept on a leash during any outings.

9. Chow Chow

Sharmaine Monticalbo

Chow Chows are adorable, fluffy dogs that must be consistently groomed, and it's crucial that their grooming routine starts early. It should include regular baths, brushing, and blow drying to help them get accustomed to the process.

The thick fur around their faces can be particularly challenging to wash, but it's very important to keep the region clean to prevent matting, which can be painful.

10. Old English Sheepdog

Filip Kvasnak

Everyone loves Old English Sheepdogs because of their fluffy and friendly temperament. However, their coats call for a significant amount of upkeep.

Full-body brushing several times a week is needed to prevent matting. Or, for easier maintenance, their coat can be trimmed shorter on a regular basis.

Beyond grooming, these dogs are strong and athletic as well. Plenty of playtime and outdoor activity is key to keeping them healthy.

11. Australian Cattle Dog

Loli de Elia

Australian Cattle Dogs, also known as Blue Heelers, are tireless herding canines with a strong desire to run. They have a high prey drive and protective instincts, so they're best suited for owners with wide open spaces.

This breed needs to burn off its seemingly infinite energy and requires structure to stay well-behaved. Thankfully, though, their short coats are less maintenance-intensive.

12. Pekingese

Mert Ocak

Finally, Pekingese come with a hefty maintenance load due to their unique physical traits. They have short legs, flat noses, short necks, bulging eyes, and dense coats, which is why they tend to be expensive when it comes to both grooming and healthcare.

Owners should expect higher vet bills and pet insurance costs due to breed-specific health problems. Also, Pekingese are prone to overheating, so they'll need cool areas to rest during the warmer months and a tangle-free coat to allow proper airflow.

Jeremiah Brent has an amazing knack for making spaces feel luxe but also totally livable. His modern-vintage aesthetic creates really timeless, soulful spaces I love. One of my favorite reality shows, Queer Eye, is lucky to have him as their newest member and interior designer. I chatted with Jeremiah this week about all things design, reality TV, his life with partner Nate Berkus (plus a few lovely wedding design tips), and his pantry organization hacks.

Also, you can score a pantry makeover with Jeremiah, thanks to Almond Breeze. Find the sweepstakes details below!

Here's what Jeremiah Brent shared with us about decor, Queer Eye, and life with Nate Berkus in an exclusive interview!

Jeremiah Brent

Your aesthetic is known for being sophisticated yet warm. What’s your best piece of advice for someone looking to make their home feel more personal?

Jeremiah: Theresa, that's my life mission with design. It’s become super-prescriptive design. The most memorable rooms and homes I've ever been in had nothing to do with how much money they spent or if it was from Architectural Digest, it just looked like them.

My biggest piece of advice would be: Really think about the moments in your day that matter most to you. Are you an early morning person who needs coffee? Are you an evening person who wants to lie down and watch TV, or are you somebody who's very ceremonial?

Do you have a spot to read a book and have a glass of wine at night? If you start creating your space for your moments instead of for other people, it just changes the way you move through your own house.

Nate & Jeremiah by Design gave viewers a glimpse into your life with Nate and your family — what was it like working so closely with your partner on screen?

Jeremiah: He's my favorite person in the world. I mean, it's not easy to work with a spouse. It can really make or break you, but my husband has always believed in my talent and my perspective creatively and we have a lot of respect for each other. What it represented was us being able to show a family like ours to the world that maybe they didn't have access to, and it was really important and I'm really proud of it. It's also this beautiful timeline of the first 10 years of our lives as a family.

Netflix

Now you’re joining Queer Eye. What’s something about working on reality TV home makeovers that people might not realize?

Jeremiah: This is going to be a weird thing to say, but I don't think people realize how real Queer Eye is. I've worked on a lot of reality television, which is aging me tremendously. [laughs] Queer Eye is different. I mean, I sat there every week watching people walk into new versions of themselves. It's an interesting thing when you see somebody the way they want to be seen and then you watch them change the way they see themselves. I got to watch my dearest friends do what they do and it was just wild. You can't produce that kind of energy.

What's one of your favorite moments on the show?

Jeremiah: There was a woman named Jen'ya who is a single mother and I was raised by a single mother, and it was particularly impactful for me because it's everything you wish you could have done for your mother growing up. To be able to have that full circle moment and say, "I know exactly what you're going through" and every chance you just can't seem to get, that felt really good.

Netflix

Let’s talk weddings. What’s one design element from Say I Do that you’d love to see more couples incorporate into their own celebrations?

Jeremiah: The people that they love, which is a weird thing to say, but I think so much about weddings becomes about the conventional, like flowers and this and that. That personalized component makes it just this really beautiful, holistic, important thing. In our wedding we tried to incorporate the people that were really part of the fabric of our lives because we wouldn't have been there without them.

What are some ways that you and Nate incorporated your closest people?

Jeremiah: My mother's recipes for our desserts, certain flowers from my grandparents, certain smells. We incorporated photos in different areas. My sister sang at our wedding, which was super special. Tons of different little things, like little nods to people we love.

What’s one design trend that makes you cringe?

Jeremiah: Acrylic furniture because of fingerprints and dust. But I support people who have it, it’s just not for me.

Given this sweepstakes, what are your best organizational hacks for the pantry?

Jeremiah: I think the pantry becomes kind of a catch-all for everything. And the next thing you know, half of it's expired. It kind of becomes like a pit where things go to die. In our own house, I'm constantly editing, even if it's just changing where things are spatially in the pantry, moving them around a little bit forces you to go through things and reassess them. And lighting. Buy simple, really inexpensive LED strip lighting that you can attach to the top of your pantry inside and light. It makes a world of a difference.

Netflix

Why you decided to partner with Almond Breeze. Do you have a go-to recipe or favorite beverage?

Jeremiah: We're really aligned for a lot of different reasons. They are crafted obviously from the best Blue Diamond almonds. They're all about sustainability. The fact that it's this wholesome plant-based almondmilk. We use it in smoothies, cereals, Poppy [my daughter] just used it in her cereal this morning. You know, life is crazy and busy and I'm traveling all the time and I love that I don't have to worry in two weeks if I need to get rid of it because it’s shelf stable. It's just a matter of aligning with a company that their priorities are in the same place as mine, as a father and as a husband.

Do you like to cook?

Jeremiah: Love to cook. It's my favorite. I love the ceremony of it, preparing something and then people coming together and then watching them eat it. It's the best.

What's your go-to recipe that's not a beverage?

Jeremiah: I'll give you two. I make a weeknight bolognese, but I actually think the recipe is from Ina Garten because I'm obsessed with her. And then I do a jalapeño pomegranate glazed ham for the holidays, which sounds like a lot of flavor and very fancy, but it's really easy and it's so good.
