5 Ways to Customize Your Cutoffs

It’s summer time and that means it’s time to cut up your old jeans. Last year we brought you three trendy ways to update those old jeans and this year we are bringing you five more!

We’ll show you how to update jeans into stylish cut-offs and how to add some new flare to those shorts that just hang out in the bottom of your drawers.

With 4th of July and the World Cup happening at the same time these shorts are a MUST. Plus American flag anything, at anytime, is always a win.

American Flag Cut-Offs

Materials:

– jeans

– fabric paint (red and white)

– paper

– pen

– painter’s tape

Tools:

– paint brush

– foam brush

– scissors

Instructions:

1. Try on your jeans and mark where you want your shorts to end. Fold the jeans in half and cut about 1 inch under your mark.

2. Using tape, create stripes on the right side of the shorts. Paint the stripes red, wait for them to dry, then peel off tape and paint that area white.

3. Fold a piece of paper in half, draw and cut out a star shape. This will be your star stencil.

4. Place stencil on the left hand side of the shorts. Hold in place and use the foam paint brush to create the stars.

Let’s get making!

Try on your jeans and mark the length of where you want the jeans to fall. Using scissors, cut about 1 inch below the line that you marked. Remember, you can always cut away more but you can’t add more back on ;)

On the right hand side, use painter’s tape to create the stripes. Once the red is dry, peel back the tape and paint in the white.

Use the paper to create a star stencil. Fold the paper in half and draw half of a star. Cut out and place on your shorts. Use the foam brush to apply the paint.

Listen up! We’ll show you how to create custom colorful cut-offs in five easy steps.

Colored Cut-Offs

Materials:

– jeans

– bleach

– fabric dye

– pen

Tools:

– scissors

Instructions:

1. Try on your jeans and mark where you want your shorts to end. Fold the jeans in half and cut about 1 inch under your mark.

2. In a large tub create a mixture that is half bleach + half water. Let shorts soak for an hour.

3. Ring out and wash your shorts to prep them for coloring.

4. Mix ⅔ water with ⅓ fabric dye. Let shorts sit in dye for an hour.

5. Ring out and wash in washing machine.

Let’s get dying!

Just like the American Flag shorts, try these jeans on to find the perfect length for your shorts. Cut one inch below your line because you can always cut more, you can’t add on what you’ve already cut. Next, create a mixture that is half water, half bleach. Let your shorts soak for about an hour. Completely immerse the shorts in the bleach, you don’t want to have uneven spots. Once they’ve soaked, rinse the shorts and let them completely dry.

Brand, color, and quality of your jeans are just some factors that influence how the bleach will react to your jeans. Most jeans won’t turn completely white. Make sure you don’t leave them in the solution for longer than one hour. The bleach will eat away at the threads and make them very weak. This means it will easily tear in awkward spots. Trust me, I may or may not know from experience =(

Check that out! Now our jeans didn’t turn completely white, but they are now light enough to show some color.

Time to turn these cut-offs a nice Radiant Orchid. Create a mixture of water and dye. You don’t need too much dye, just enough to get the water a solid rich color. Soak the shorts in the dye for about an hour. Once again make sure all spots are covered so you don’t have any weird spots. Once they’ve soaked up enough color, rinse them out and put them in the washing machine. Wash these alone because they will bleed and mess up your other clothes!

Now this is what I’m talking about! A perfect shade of purple.

We’ve accepted the fact that we’ll never get tired of studs, and I hope you have, too :)

Studded Cut-Offs

Materials:

– studs

– jeans

Tools:

– scissors

– pen

– cheese grater

– flat nosed pliers

Instructions:

1. Try on your jeans and mark where you want your shorts to end. Fold the jeans in half and cut about 1 inch under your mark.

2. Use the cheese grater to distress your jeans. You will want to leave the white weaving behind and pull the denim weaving with pliers.

3. Lay studs on jeans to figure out a perfect placement.

4. Poke studs through and use pliers to bend down the backs.

Let’s jazz up these jeans.

Try on your jeans to cut them to your desired length. Then go crazy with the cheese grater! This will give you a nice distressed look. Use your pliers to pull away the denim threads, but leave the horizontal white ones behind. Trim away any excess to get a nice distressed rip.

Lay your studs out in a pattern before you start studding. This will help you with spacing so you don’t make unnecessary holes. Once you’ve got them in place, poke them through the jeans and, using the pliers, bend the back handles down.

What a stud.

Enough with the old jeans, I’m sure you have old shorts that also never get touched! Here are some ways to update preexisting jean shorts.

Ombre Shorts

Materials:

– shorts

– fabric dye

Instructions:

1. Mix ⅘ water with ⅕ fabric dye. Dip shorts in dye ⅔ of the way.

2. Add more dye and dip shorts half way.

3. Ring and wash in washing machine.

When I dip, you dip, we dip.

Mix about 4/5 water with 1/5 dye. This is your first layer of color so we want it to be pretty muted. Dip the shorts about 3/4 of the way into the dye. Use your fingers to blend in the top line of dye.

Add more dye to the mixture you already have. Dip shorts in half way and let sit for 30 minutes. This will give you a nice rich color. Then rinse and toss into the washing machine.

Nothing is better than a nice purple ombre.

Update old shorts with a fun pattern. We chose aztec, but get creative! You could try cheetah, polka dots or even simple flowers.

Aztec Shorts

Materials:

– shorts

– fabric paint

Tools:

– paint brushes

– tape

Instructions:

1. Tape off 1 inch stripes across the shorts.

2. Create a pattern of green and purple triangles.

3. Peel off tape and outline triangles with orange and yellow lines.

4. In between the lines, create another pattern of triangles using orange and pink fabric paint.

Let’s get painting.

First step is to tape off stripes to create your aztec pattern.

Paint opposite facing triangles in between the lines.

Peel back the tape and add some colorful lines. Then grab some puff paint and add triangles that face opposite directions.

Custom aztec shorts!

These shorts are wild so when getting dressed pair them with a neutral tee or tank.

We are for sure ready for cut-off season. Next thing — a nice tan.

Good bike shorts can be hard to find, and I truly know the struggle. I like to have a reliable lineup of bike shorts for yoga classes and climbing sessions, but I also want to be able to wear the same shorts out and about for running errands and casually hanging out with friends.

For me, the perfect pair of bike shorts must be:

  • Compressive, but not uncomfortable
  • Fitted, but not to the point of having to make consistent awkward adjustments
  • An appropriate length, but still a lil’ cheeky (want to give the butt a good lift!)

Luckily, there are a ton of bike short styles on Amazon that shoppers are loving. The reviews on one particular pair of these bike shorts actually convinced me to give ‘em a try!

Based on thousands of reviews from real shoppers, these are the top 5 biker shorts you can snag on Amazon and begin sporting as soon as they arrive. Let’s dive in!

Amazon

CRZ Yoga Butterluxe Biker Shorts

4.7/5 stars

These high-waisted biker shorts come in an extremely soft fabric that moves with you with ease. The best part about this pair is they have a small gusset patch along the crotch to prevent a weird fit (IYKYK). They're offered in several different lengths (2.5, 4, 6, and 8 inches), which makes finding the most practical pair for your lifestyle fairly easy.

The CRZ Yoga Butterluxe Biker Shorts are currently available in sizes XXS-XL for $24.

Promising reviews:

"Super soft, the perfect amount of thickness were it’s breathable but NOT see through at all. I got a small, which is my usual size for leggings from this brand, and they’re great. The only thing I would mention is that if you’re a thicker gal and have a butt, I find myself having to pull them up from time to time."

"Love these shorts. The shorts didn’t roll up, even through a running workout and CrossFit. The shorts are a soft material, not slick, but you don’t notice it during a workout. Only downside would be no pockets, but I knew that when I ordered them. Great value for money, feels like a high quality shirt. Will see how they hold up, have worn them 4 times so far. The color looks just like the picture."

Amazon

Colorfulkoala High Waisted Biker Shorts

4.6/5 stars

These next biker shorts feature none other than side pockets! They're always super helpful for stowing away your phone or other small necessities. These 75% polyester and 25% spandex shorts have a 6-inch inseam, so they provide a good amount of coverage. The brushed, buttery soft fabric stretches with you, plus the waistband sits at the natural waist, so you can move around totally unrestricted.

The Colorfulkoala High Waisted Biker Shorts currently come in tons of colors and sizes XS-XL for $20 (was $25).

Promising reviews:

"I have purchased three pairs in different colors. I use them for both running and circuit training. I do not have to worry about them riding up. They are super soft, stretchy, and durable."

"These shorts are so comfortable! Material is thin enough that they breathe, love the high waist to make me feel snatched. Some biker shorts have thick material that isn’t flexible and these aren’t it! Will def be buying more!"

"These shorts are so cute and comfy! Black is the best because you can dress them up or wear them for working out. I highly recommend!"

Amazon

CRZ Yoga Naked Feeling Biker Shorts

4.5/5 stars

These shorts from CRZ Yoga are available in 3-inch 4-inch, 6-inch, and 8-inch lengths and plenty of colorways, so landing on your ideal pair won't be that big of a challenge. They're made from a sweat-wicking fabric with decent compression, which is also uniquely fur-resistant! The seamless waistband flaunts a hidden pocket so you can store your phone, keys, cards, or whatever else you tend to carry easily.

The CRZ Yoga Naked Feeling Biker Shorts come in sizes XXS-XL for $18.

Promising reviews:

"Love these shorts so much! Buying workout shorts can be scary - will they be too tight? Too short? Not supportive enough? These are perfect. True to size, stretchy, super breathable, comfortable fabric, stayed up the whole time, and flattering. GET THEM. 😉"

"These are my absolute favorite workout shorts. I love the 6 inch length so I bought 5 different colors and only wear this brand to the gym. They are SO soft and buttery smooth and really good quality. I throw them in the wash with everything else (but air dry them bc they dry so fast and I don't want them to shrink). They are really high waisted which I personally like and I find them really flattering. They do have a bit of tummy control but nothing too drastic to the point that they are uncomfortable. I keep coming back to buy more colors because they are all so pretty. Just buy these you won't regret it."

Amazon

Baleaf Biker Shorts

4.4/5 stars

You can shop these Baleaf shorts in 3-inch, 5-inch, and 8-inch inseam lengths based on the amount of coverage you like. The 87% polyester, 13% spandex material is said to be moisture-wicking, breathable, and squat-proof, also offering plenty of stretch. The wide elastic waistband provides some tummy control, which is nice for any occasion.

There are endless colors to shop in the Baleaf Biker Shorts. They currently come in sizes XS-3X for $20 (was $27).

Promising reviews:

"These are amazing. I love the longer length, they are so soft, love the pockets, Baleaf has continued to win my confidence. Purchased several other products from them and always feel like I get a great value for my money."

"I really like these. They fit as expected. Nice and stretchy. Soft. Not see through. I wanted some compression but not so much that it digs into my skin. These are perfect."

"These shorts are fantastic! I’ve worn them a plenty of times since I purchased them in 2021. They withstood multiple half marathon training cycles and my first marathon. They are very comfortable, don’t ride up, or slide down when running. They are true to size. The pockets are another plus plus to these great shorts!"

Amazon

Always Workout Yoga Shorts

4.4/5 stars

The waistband on these short shorts measures around 3 inches, holding in your tummy fairly firmly. This way, they're easy to wear for workouts, but also under skirts and dresses for added coverage! The material they're made of is 92% polyester and 8% spandex, which boasts a four-way stretch and good breathability.

You can shop the Always Workout Yoga Shorts in lots of colors and sizes XXXS-3XL for $12 (was $13) right now.

Promising reviews:

"I really like the shorts. They are cute and flattering. They looked small to fit (I did get a size small), but they fit really nice. They are short, but that's all good. So far, I am loving wearing them. I've done house work and worked out in them. I approve/recommend."

"These are sooo comfy and stretchy. I got them to wear under a short dress so you wouldn’t see all my goodies when I bend over, but also used them for a workout. They fit as expected and the length is definitely short, but perfect for under clothes."

The Wicked moviepress tour has been a truly beautiful thing to witness. Ariana Grande & Cynthia Erivo have cried in almost every interview because of how much they love their characters and each other, and it seems like working on this project really did heal something in them. So, after the sincerity of their interviews, I was really taken aback when I learned Dax Shepard had Cynthia Erivo on his Armchair Expert podcast...and chose to ask her about going to the bathroom?

Keep reading for what Dax Shepard had to say and, like me, wonder why he asked it in the first place.

On an episode of his Armchair Expert podcast, Dax Shepard asked Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo if her famously long nails make it difficult to wipe when she goes to the bathroom. “I knew you would ask that,” Cynthia responds, saying “no one’s afraid” to ask such an intimate question.

“My answer is that nobody uses just their fingers to wipe their backside,” she says. “You use tissue, correct? And you wipe!”

When he asked if she was annoyed or offended by the question, Cynthia admits she's "annoyed by it."

“I'm, like, 'Come on, guys,' ” she says. “But I get it, but it's also, like, ‘I'm a functioning adult, and I've never walked around smelling like, you know…'"

Theo Wargo/Getty Images

The actress has proved she's nothing if not honest this fall, going viral for saying "thank goodness" the actresses who auditioned with her for Glinda didn't land the role and for vocalizinghow much a fan edit of the Wicked movie poster offended her (she later admitted she should have texted her friends instead of posting on social media).

Now, this question was very weird to me for a few reasons. Not only does it have nothing to do with the film, but Dax asking Cynthia about her bathroom habits gives me a similar feeling to the one I got watching that male interviewer ask Scarlett Johansson about her underwear during Avengers: Age of Ultron press. Just...what is the reason? Plus, the fact Cynthia has also been vocal about how much she values her nails as a part of Black culture only makes the question (and the fact the nails feel like, no pun intended, the butt of the joke) weirder.

"Here’s the thing," Cynthia tells Dax before switching topics. "There are people who do not have nails who need to check how they’re wiping." Get 'em girl!

What did you think about this Armchair Expert interview with Dax Shepard and Cynthia Erivo? Let us know in the comments and read up on The Latest Wicked: Part Two News!

Summer is incomplete without a good pair of shorts that you can pull on for any given occasion – evening strolls, happy hours, farmer’s markets, and the like. But sometimes, the major struggle is finding a shorts style that feels and looks good (chafing is absolutely not the move). Luckily, Abercrombie & Fitch has so many cute shorts that aren’t a literal pain in the butt.

Abercrombie & Fitch is currently having a sale on all of their shorts! Here are the details:

  • Dates: May 10-13
  • Deals: 25% off ALL shorts, plus 15% off everything else (like dresses, jeans, tops, and more)
  • Stackable promo code: ‘AFSHORTS’ for an additional 15% off

We love A&F because of their versatile styles and their very impressive size range. They have a plethora of materials to shop from, including denim, linen, and fleecy lounge shorts. These are our favorite styles for summertime!

Denim Shorts

High Rise Dad Shorts

Dad shorts are an anti-chafing hero – this pair in particular boasts a longer hem than your usual denim shorts. The inseam measures about 5 inches, so you have more coverage! These A&F shorts are made to have a relaxed fit throughout the hips and thighs. We adore this light denim wash, but you can also shop these shorts in 8 other colors.

The High Rise Dad Shorts are shoppable in sizes 23-37 on sale for $52.50 (was $70).

Curve Love High Rise Dad Shorts

You can also shop A&F's dad shorts in the brand's Curve Love silhouette, which is made with an additional 2 inches through the hips and thighs to help eliminate gapping. Trust us, we know the pain of shorts not fitting right, which is why these pieces are so great!

The Curve Love High Rise Dad Shorts are shoppable in sizes 23-37 on sale for $48.75 (was $65).

Mid Rise 10" Loose Shorts

Long bermuda shorts like these seem to be another emerging denim trend for 2024. They look so chic with other summer capsule wardrobe staples like laid-back sandals and basic tank tops! Abercrombie & Fitch knows what's up, and this mid-rise number is perfectly on-trend. The inseam lands around 10 inches, with a loose fit all around the legs. You'll totally appreciate the additional length for comfort reasons!

The Mid Rise 10" Loose Shorts are currently available in sizes 30-33 on sale for $52.50 (was $70).

High Rise Loose Shorts

We truly cannot resist a high waist! While other shorts may fit snug against your figure, these let loose a bit for maximum breathability and comfort. The high rise still compliments your waistline, too. They're crafted from a vintage stretch denim material that moves with you, but still retains a bit of structure.

The High Rise Loose Shorts are shoppable in three other colors and sizes 23-37 on sale for $52.50 (was $70).

High Rise Mom Shorts

Mom shorts will never go out of style, in our opinion. A&F champions this timeless style with a super high-rise waist, 2.5 inch inseam, and a classic cuffed hem. The denim material that swarms these shorts is considerably stretchy, which is a massive perk for tackling the hot summer weather.

The High Rise Mom Shorts are also available in the Curve Love style, which accounts for 2 extra inches in the hips and thighs to fit your curves the right way. This style is available in sizes 23-37 on sale for $48.75 (was $65).

Curve Love High Rise 90s Cutoff Shorts

White shorts are a quintessential vacation piece, and these ones made in a 90's-inspired silhouette just can't be beat. The loose-fitting leg and 3.25-inch inseam allow for freedom of movement, whether you're walking, standing, or sitting down. The waistline fits you in a subtle v-shape, flatting your figure instantly.

The Curve Love High Rise 90s Cutoff Shorts are shoppable in 3 other colors and sizes 23-37 on sale for $48.75 (was $65).

Linen Shorts

Linen-Blend Pull-On Shorts

Linen shorts are so much more fuss-free than denim ones, but they can look just as put-together and elevated. Case in point: these pull-on linen shorts! The elastic high-waist pulls things together (without any buttons, no less!) and makes getting ready a total breeze. The inseam falls at about 3.5 inches, plus this cutie style has pockets!

The Linen-Blend Pull-On Shorts come in 9 other colors and patterns in sizes XXS-XXL on sale now for $37.50 (was $50).

Premium Linen Scallop-Hem Tailored Shorts

These scalloped shorts with an elastic waistband look like the perfect summer uniform, TBH. Their 100% linen construction means otherworldly breathability, especially when it feels like a million degrees out. A&F even sells coordinating linen tops if you want to step out in a matching set.

The Premium Linen Scallop-Hem Tailored Shorts are shoppable in three other trendy colors and sizes 23-37 on sale now for $52.50 (was $70).

Curve Love A&F Sloane Tailored Linen-Blend Shorts

Though these high-rise linen shorts lack some pretty cool scallops like the previous pair, their waistline pleats and sophisticated belt loops are everything. They're giving office chic in the best way possible! The generous 4.5 inch amps up the comfort levels of these shorts with ease, but the details from the cuffed hem to the seamless pockets make them a bit more luxe.

The Curve Love A&F Sloane Tailored Linen-Blend Shorts are shoppable in sizes 23-37 on sale now for $52.50 (was $70).

Lounge Shorts

Vintage Sunday Shorts

The Vintage Sunday Shorts boast a thick, durable fleece material that feels oh-so luxurious – even if you're just wearing them for a session of rotting on the couch. The wide, elastic high-rise waistband is fitted with drawstrings so you can find your perfect fit. These A&F shorts come prepared with two side pockets to hold your phone and/or your fave lip balm!

The Vintage Sunday Shorts come in 7 other fun colors and sizes XXS-XL on sale for $37.50 (was $50).

YPB neoKNIT Unlined Shorts

These short-shorts lean more athletic, but they work just as well for lazy weekends. They're made from a sweat-wicking neoprene material, making for exceptionally light and breathable wear. The curved bottom hem grants you more mobility, too. Plus, there's pockets!

The YPB neoKNIT Unlined Shorts are shoppable in 2 other colors and sizes XXS-XXL on sale for $30 (was $40).

Let us know which December movie you're most excited for on Instagram!

Nicole Kidman is, as the kids say, mothering. She's giving fans plenty of movies and TV shows to pick from while we wait for the next seasons of Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect StrangersA Family Affair, Expats, The Perfect Couple (and the AMC intro, of course). Her newest movie Babygirl comes from A24, and the steamy drama is mixing work and pleasure. Pour yourself a glass of wine for this one, folks.

Scroll down to learn more about Babygirl — and to watch the HOT new trailer!

What is the plot of Babygirl?

A24

Babygirl Plot

In Babygirl, Nicole Kidman plays Romy, a powerful CEO struggling to hold her perfect persona together. Her marriage to Jacob has never provided with much pleasure, despite the fact he's caring and artistic. But when Romy meets a young intern named Samuel, and feels immediately drawn to him, the two begin a torrid affair.

And filming scenes with Harry Dickinson got so intense, Kidman said she literally had to take breaks. “There were times when we were shooting where I was like, ‘I don’t want to orgasm any more,'” she told the Sun. “Don’t come near me. I hate doing this. I don’t care if I am never touched again in my life!”

But the fact the movie was made by women empowered Kidman — and gave her a sense of freedom. "Doing this subject matter in the hands of the woman that wrote the script, that's directing it and is a really great actress herself — we became one in a weird way, which I'd never had with a director before," Kidman says in a statement. "When you're working with a woman on this subject matter, you can share everything with each other.”

"I really decided in the beginning, I want to make a sexual film, just as sexual as all these films that I've always admired so much," adds writer-director-producer Halina Reijn, "but now I'm going to do it completely through female eyes. What does that mean and what does that look like?”

When is the Babygirl release date?

A24

Babygirl Release Date

Babygirl made its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, but you can watch the movie in theaters December 25, 2024.

Who's in the Babygirl cast?

A24

Babygirl Cast

The cast of Babygirl includes Nicole Kidman, Harris Dickinson, Sophie Wilde, and Antonio Banderas.

What has Nicole Kidman said about making Babygirl?

Amy Sussman/Getty Images

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Nicole Kidman revealed Babygirl is the most "exposing" film she's done because she's “made some films that are pretty exposing, but not like this.”

“It left me raggedm" Kidman says. "At some point I was like, I don’t want to be touched. I don’t want to do this anymore, but at the same time I was compelled to do it...This is something you do and hide in your home videos. It is not a thing that normally is going to be seen by the world.”

“I felt very exposed as an actor, as a woman, as a human being,” she continues. “I had to go in and go out like, I need to put my protection back on. What have I just done? Where did I go? What did I do?”

What does babygirl energy mean?

A24

"Babygirl" is a term of endearment that's usually applied to a man (you've probably heard it describe Pedro Pascal or Paul Mescal). When someone is giving babygirl energy, they're kind, cute, and disarming. And considering Babygirl plays with power dynamics, we could be guessing who the "babygirl" in question is up until the very end.
