We’ve been obsessed with Gigi Hadid’s hair since she first stepped on the scene. Whether she’s rocking a freshly cut bob or a trendy topknot at NYFW (which has been her go-to in the past!), her hair is always on point. One of our most loved ‘dos of hers is what we’re dubbing the “off-duty model braid”: a take on the popular fishtail braid with a new twist that makes it look super chic. Come on, just look at this pic!
This look is totally doable and easy to sport on the reg, making it a seriously legit style for cozy time and a night on the town — that’s how versatile it is. Give it a try the next time you’re in need of a polished look that’ll make you look and feel like a supermodel.
STEP 1: THE PERFECTLY PLACED PONY
Part of the mystique of this style is the placement of the ponytail, so let’s start with that! Start by styling the ponytail by your upper crown — this is what really sets this look apart and gives it a high-fashion feel. Be sure to comb out any bumps with a comb so your look feels ultra polished.
STEP 2: SLEEK IT UP
Next, add in more sleekness by applying shine serum on your ponytail — look for a serum that gives you a wet, yet non-greasy look and feel. A little bit of this stuff goes a long way, so don’t go overboard with product usage here!
STEP 3: BEGIN YOUR BRAID
Before you begin braiding, take a piece of hair and clip it to one side (like we did above). You’ll be using that strand of hair to wrap around your elastic band. Now part your ponytail into two sections and begin braiding your hair. The number one secret trick to Gigi’s look is an inverted braid (versus a traditional one) to create loads of volume. Start at the base of the ponytail and begin creating a tight fishtail by grabbing strands from *underneath* (versus over top), braiding with tension to add texture and dimension. Once you’ve braided all the hair, secure with an elastic.
Grabbing strands from underneath creates that coveted volume. Hair with extra body will create a thicker, fuller braid, which we’re allll about.
STEP 4: IT’S ALL ABOUT THAT BASE
Pay extra attention to the base of your braid, and tug at it (this technique is called pancaking) to make it as wide + thick as possible. A thicker base will make for a more model-esque look, which is what we’re after here. Next, wrap your ponytail base with the strand you set aside for that sexy, polished vibe.
STEP 5: FLAWLESS FINISH
Keep things extra sleek by combing away any bumps (again!) and BOOM — you’re now rocking a high-fashion braid like Gigi!
