Mimosas are great. So is an Irish coffee. But nothing says brunch quite like a Bloody Mary, with its array of veggies, pickled goodies and hot kick that’ll get you up in the morning. Today we’re trying our luck with the Deluxe Hot Sauce Kit from Grow and Make. We’re going to concoct some fiery hot sauce to add to our Bloody Mary bar. Ingredients:
– Deluxe Hot Sauce Kit by Grow and Make
– tomato
– carrot
– onion
– garlic
– cilantro
– brown sugar (if you want more than what they provide in the kit)
Instructions:
It’s super important to sterilize your bottles so that you (or the gal pal you gift this to) doesn’t get sick. All you need to do is dissolve the sterilization powder in warm water. Then place your bottles in the solution for a minute.
- Sterilize your bottles by mixing the solution from the kit with a ½ gallon of water.
- Decide how H-O-T you want your sauce. PUT ON GLOVES! Then remove the stems from your chosen peppers. Place them in a blender and mix until the peppers are almost a powder.
- Boil ½ cup of water and add it to the peppers in the blender. Mix on high to blend, and then let the mixture sit for about five minutes so that the water absorbs the pepper.
- Chop your other ingredients. Add them to taste. Get creative and make a flavor you like. We used one tomato, one carrot, two cloves of garlic, three tablespoons of onion and a cup of cilantro.
- Add spices. There are four to choose from in the kit. Mix and match to make different flavored sauces. We added about a ½ teaspoon of ancho powder and a ¼ teaspoon of brown sugar.
- Next add an acid. We used the white wine vinegar from the kit, but you can also add lemon juice, lime juice or apple cider vinegar.
- Blend all of your ingredients together. Then transfer the mixture to a saucepan and bring it to a boil for ten minutes.
- Let the sauce cool and then pour it into your bottles using the funnel.
Choose your poison…er, peppers. Do you like it hot? Or maybe you’re more of a mild gal. Get those gloves on or risk getting hot pepper oils in your eyes (at least that’s what we always accidentally do). Remove the stems and grind your peppers in a blender. Then add a ½ cup of boiling water to the blender and give it a whirl. When it’s good and mixed, let it sit for five minutes to allow the water to soak up the pepper.
In the meantime, chop up your other ingredients. This is your chance to get really creative. Do you like your hot sauce to have a strong tomato flavor? Or perhaps you are a big garlic fan. We recommend you add a little, taste a spoonful, add a little more until you get the flavor you love (or that makes your face burn like you like— ghost pepper love, anyone?).
Next add spices. Same idea here — add the flavors you like, starting with a little and adding more until it’s perfect. Finally add an acid to the mix, like lemon juice, lime juice, white wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar or another favorite acid.
Give the blender another spin and then pour your mixture into a saucepan. Boil it on the stove for about ten minutes. Use the funnel to move the sauce from the pan into your bottles.
