3 Hacks to Make Last Season’s Sandals Feel New Again

You know the routine: With each new season comes new shoe trends that we’re all dying to try ourselves. This year, sporty chic and all-fringe-everything are dominating the runways and seriously tempting us to break those personal shopping budgets. But, as they say (err, as we say), why buy when you can DIY? With just a few scraps of leather, you can update last season’s strappy sandals into some serious 2015 footwear. We actually used leftover pieces of leather from our Leather Fringe Jewelry Kit to make these beauties come to life. Scroll on to learn how yourself.

The Tassel Trick

Materials

– strappy shoes (we used these Old Navy heels)

– leather scraps

– E6000 glue or a hot glue gun

– pencil or pen

– ruler

– fabric scissors

Instructions

1. To make each tassel, cut a 2.5 x 4-inch swatch of leather. Draw a line about 1/3 inch from the top of each swatch on the back side of the leather. Then carefully cut up to this line to make the tassel’s fringe.

2. Cut a separate small strip of leather — this will be the top loop of your tassel. Using E6000 or a hot glue gun, glue both ends of this strip to the top left of your fringed leather swatch to make a loop. Starting at this loop, tightly roll the uncut part of the leather, gluing as you go. Repeat these steps to make at least five more tassels.

3. Once all of your tassels are dry, slip them onto the top strap of your sandal. Then trim them to your liking.

Did we mention how affordable this DIY is? SUPER affordable. Your wallet should be thanking us :)

Slip your tassels onto the top strap of your shoe. We put three on each, but who says you should stop there?

Try on your shoe, then trim the fringe to your liking.

Ta-daaah! You just turned a perfectly plain set of heels into kicky, fun shoes.

Get Fringe-y With It

Materials

– strappy shoes (we used these from Forever 21)

– leather scraps

– E6000 glue or a hot glue gun

– pencil or pen

– ruler

– fabric scissors

Instructions

1. Measure your shoe strap to determine how long your leather swatch should be.

2. Cut a leather swatch that’s about two times as long as it is wide (we cut a 3 x 6.5-inch swatch). Next, cut a pointed tip at one end of the swatch. Then fold your swatch in half to mirror this cut on the other end. Cut the leather in half while it’s still folded so you have two identical pentagons.

3. Draw a line about 1/2 inch from the top of each piece of leather (make sure it is drawn on the back side!). Carefully cut fringe up to this line.

4. Glue the fringed swatch to the strap of your sandal, making sure it’s centered on the shoe. Let dry.

How fresh is that teal leather? You can thank our Leather Fringe Jewelry Kit for that :)

First up — measure the shoe strap to determine how long your leather swatch should be.

Fringe, you’re so pretty.

Using E6000 or a hot glue gun, glue the fringed swatch to the strap of your sandal, making sure it is centered on the shoe. Let dry.

Cute, right?!

The Good Sport Sandal

Materials

– strappy sandals (we used these from Old Navy)

– leather scraps (2 colors)

– E6000 glue or a hot glue gun

– pencil or pen

– ruler

– fabric scissors

Instructions

1. Measure the strap to which you’ll be adding the embellishment. Cut a swatch of leather that is the same length and about one inch wide. Using a different colored leather, cut another swatch that is equal length and half the width of the first color.

2. Glue the thinner swatch down the center of the wide piece using E6000 or a hot glue gun. Let dry.

3. Carefully glue one corner of your leather to the edge of the strap, only covering about 1/3 of the shoe’s fabric. Glue sparingly as you go, pasting the rest of the strap down. Add extra glue to each edge to ensure the leather will stay put. Let dry before wearing.

TBH, these pink strappy shoes are pretty gorgeous on their own. Three cheers for Old Navy.

Measure the strap to which you’ll be adding the embellishment.

Cut a swatch of leather that is the same length as your shoe strap and about one inch wide. Using a different colored leather, cut another swatch that is equal length and half the width of the first color.

Glue the thinner swatch onto the center of the thicker piece of leather. Let dry.

Because a thicker shoe strap is very much in style, we decided to make this bottom strap wider with the leather.

Rather than gluing your leather directly over the bottom strap, glue it just above, so you’re only covering about 1/3 of the shoe’s fabric. Add extra glue to each end to keep the leather in place.

All done! FYI, we adore these.

How easy was that? Leather might just be our new favorite DIY medium.

The Crocs Classic Cloghas become ironically iconic. Whether it’s due to a slew of sport mode memes or their wacky (and seemingly endless) collaborations with brands from the likes of Taco Bell and Hidden Valley Ranch, I’m so happy to see Crocs popping off.

Crocs has come a long way from the days of hoarding Jibbitz shoe charms, too. They’ve broadened their horizons to silhouettes like platform sandals, cushy slides, fashion-forward heels, and sophisticated wedges – they’re all too cute!

Scroll on for 11 stylish Crocs shoes that go beyond their signature clogs, all perfect for stomping around in total comfort.

Brooklyn Low Wedge Sandals

With these trendy $55 platforms, you'll never have to sacrifice comfort for style ever again. They're the ultimate comfy shoe for the office, date night – you name it! These smooth wedges are fitted with Crocs' LiteRide™ foam technology along the insoles, so each step you take is soft and supported.

There are two wide straps across the top with an adjustable pushpin-closure ankle strap (yay, no buckles!) and deep heel cups for added stability.

Dylan Burnished Clogs

This $55 clog may be pretty low-laying, but its step is still soft as can be. They're crafted with the classic Crocs cushion that prioritizes comfort above all. The brown burnishing texture gives the effect of real leather, even though they're synthetic. The neutral colorway is super easy to match with other garments, making this the perfect errands-running shoe!

Stomp Fisherman Sandals

Fisherman sandalsare unquestionably trendy at the moment, and I just adore Crocs' dreamy purple take on the vintage shoe. These $70 sandals boast ultra-platformed chunky soles (the heel measures a little over 2 inches) with a generous amount of tread on the bottoms for tackling a variety of terrain. Though they're given a boost, they wear exceptionally lightweight on the feet. The back ankle strap is adjustable, too!

Getaway Strappy Sandals

Gotta love a strappy slip-on! These Crocs sandals give you that much-desired strappy look without having to mess with any buttons or buckles. According to the brand, the totally seamless upper "feels like nothing at all, floating on top of your foot and moving with you without restriction." This pair is waterproof, as most other Crocs are. They come in 5 other colors for just $40.

Brooklyn Luxe Gladiator Sandals

The best part about these $75 Crocs? They feel broken-in from day one. The stylized gladiator straps reach up to your ankle, adding some edge. This pair is wildly practical to help you go the distance, thanks to the soft-as-a-cloud footbeds and impressive tread on the soles. The look secures with a looped velcro strap around the ankle.

Miami Toe Loop Sandals

Vacation mode = on! This vibrant orange-red color is super trendy, and though these are the flattest Crocs I've seen from the brand's lineup thus far, they are unsurprisingly touted for being soft and flexible. I like that the straps on this $40 pair are streamlined (no buttons or buckles) for practical purposes, but are still very chic.

Dylan Platform Clogs

I love a platform. I love a clog. So, these $65 Crocs clogs are just dreamy! Definitely adding these to my cart... These are likely not as breathable as Crocs' sandals, but dang, do they look good. The pebbled texture mimics an *actual* leather on the outside, though they're synthetic. They come in a handful of colors that are easy to pair with anything from jeans to skirts.

Crush Sandals

Make way for some Crocs charms! The Crush sandals ($50) are easily personalizable, since they're fitted with holes for Jibbitz. What's even more appealing about them is their super lush soles. They provide tons of cushiness and also contribute to the curb appeal of these shoes, shaping out a bold platform silhouette. You'll find the expected two-strap design on these easy slip-ons.

Baya Platform Flip Sandals

Okay, these platform Crocs are very... Y2K vibes. And I love them! The adorable baby pink colorway feels especially appropriate for summertime, plus you'll get to flex the brand name that's stamped boldly across the flip flop straps. These $40 slides are water-resistant, and easy dry and clean.

Mega Crush Triple Strap Sandals

The puffy look of these $70 sandals is super playful, so if you want to make a bold move, these are the Crocs for you. They have a rubber tread that gives each step more bite, as opposed to the usual foam base. The triple strap lineup keeps your foot secure with every movement while the unique wavy sole adds some fashion-forward flair.

Classic Sandals 2.0

Jibbitz lovers, rise! These $35 signature sandals from Crocs are the "new and improved version" of the Classics. They're designed to be roomy and ultra-lightweight. There are also tons of different colors to suit your personal style. They're so cushy, you won't want to take 'em off!

As much as I love celebrity couples, I love celebrity sibling relationships even more. And Elle and Dakota Fanning are two sisters I've grown up watching since I first saw Dreamer in 2005. Considering Elle Fanning is only five months older than me, and I have a sister of my own, this is one relationship that feels particularly familiar. And while Elle has also watched Dakota Fanning act since we were kids, Dakota just revealed seeing Elle onscreen is just as special for her.

Here's why Dakota & Elle Fanning get emotional seeing each other onscreen.

Elle remembers "sobbing" during one particularly emotional Dakota Fanning movie.

“When Elle’s in anything, it makes me feel it deeper,” Dakota Fanning said at TheWrap’s Power Women Summit on December 3. “She never can fully disappear into a character totally for me as her sister. She obviously does an amazing job, but I’m always gonna see my little sister a little bit.”

And Elle is just as touched by Dakota's roles, and remembers "uncontrollably sobbing" after seeing Now Is Good, a movie where Dakota's character was dying of cancer. “Because it was my sister, I had a real traumatic reaction after that premiere and the screening,” Elle says. “Obviously the acting, but it was something felt on a deeper level.”

“I’m doing this job, I’m an actor because my sister started before me and I watched her,” Elle continues. “I wanted to do exactly what my big sister wanted to do.”

And their movies have also made an impact on everyone who watches them.

When Brit + Co caught up with Dakota Fanning at the world premiere of The Watchers, I had to ask about one of her most iconic movies: Uptown Girls. "I love it," she says of TikTok memes and edits giving the movie new life. "It's nostalgic for people who are kind of around my age, who grew up watching that movie, I think it's like a comfort movie for people. And so I love that people are still revisiting it and loving it. And maybe now that everyone's older [they're] understanding different things about it."

Dakota starred opposite Brittany Murphy, who also had roles in movies like Clueless, 8 Mile, and Girl, Interrupted. Brittany passed away in 2009 when Dakota was 15. "I loved Brittany so much and I still miss her," she says. "So anytime that she has, you know, a moment where people think about her is also nice."

You can see Elle Fanning in A Complete Unknown, in theaters December 25, and you can also stream Dakota Fanning's new show The Perfect Couple on Netflix now.
