I happen to love Halloween. I also have an affinity for creeping people out. So, when I asked DIY Designer Kelly Bryden and Beauty Editor Misty Spinney to turn my husband David and me into a next level Ghost and Mummy couple, I had no idea just how far they’d take the creepy factor. But it’s, like, *pretty* creepy — right? ;)
We stretched the definition of mummy and ghost for this duo in favor of a more unconventional approach. You know, one that could potentially give you nightmares.
The ghost in this couple is a rather ghostly take on the grim reaper or “Death,” complete with a copper lantern and total lack of facial expression… or a face, for that matter.

How to Make the Ghost Costume
Instructions:
1. Cut two holes into long pieces of fabric. Have one piece lay so the length reaches the floor and have the other piece lay so the length covers the arms.
2. Use cardboard to make the shoulders even broader and more foreboding! Drape fabric over this as well.
3. Use a hard hat to drape extra fabric over the head.
4. Carry a copper lantern!
Materials + Tools:
- 4 yards of white and cream cotton fabric
- white t-shirt and white pants
- hard hat
- cardboard (ideally from large boxes)
How to Make the Mummy Costume
Instructions:
1. Cut slits into the bottom of the skirt. The more shredded looking the better.
2. Use extra fabric to wrap around the top of the body. Weave pieces through the wrapped pieces for extra texture. This is the fun part! You can just keep wrapping in a freestyle fashion until you feel sufficiently mummified.
Step 1: White Base: Start off by using either a makeup sponge or a stippling brush to apply a layer of white makeup to your face, neck and décolletage. You can go onto your arms if you really want to commit!
- 1 yard of white and cream cotton fabric
- white tank top and gauzy white skirt

Step 2: Charcoal Contour: To bring in that spooky depth, add a black and charcoal contour to the hollows of your cheeks, around your hairline, the sides of your nose, under your nose and lower lip, down your neck and across your décolletage.
Step 3: Bruised Eye Sockets: To create these bloody bruised eyes, use a deep red cream shadow to make circles around your eyes, covering your eyebrows, and fill them in. Now add depth with a black eye shadow to your creases, inside corners of your eyes and along your lower lash line. To set your eyes, cover the rest of the red cream shadow with a lighter red eyeshadow.
Finishing Touches:Mascara + Eyeliner + Lips: Line the full brim of your eyes and add a couple coats of mascara to your eyelashes. On your lips, just add a little nude gloss over the white, so you can have a little of your natural lip peek through the white that is on them from the first step.
Yikes. I’m having flashbacks from The Ring. Do yourself a favor and avoid looking in the mirror after you’ve had a few drinks ;)
Obviously, our pup Turkey Temple couldn’t resist a little modeling moment as well. Trust me, he was thoroughly freaked out by our transformation.
