Give a Beautiful Seasonal Bouquet for Valentine’s Day (or Galentine’s Day)

We always love trips to the SF flower mart. With all of its rich history and abundance of color, it’s no wonder there’s a tried and true belief that flowers always tug at the heartstrings. Since Valentine’s Day is coming up (have you entered our DIY V-day contest?!) our homage to this traditional Valentine’s Day gift is a simple guide to building and spicing up your floral arrangement with local and seasonal flowers.

Here is our easy recipe for making a custom bouquet!

Winter Season Flowers:

pick 2-3 varietals

— anemone

— carnation

— chrysanthemums

— dutch iris

— evergreens

— gerbera daisy

— helleborus

— lily

— narcissus

— orchid

— pepperberry

— roses

— ranunculus

— sweet peas

— tulips

Any greenery can work within your bouquet, but we used a beautiful fern-like green called leather leaf, as well as a floral green called wax flower.

Materials:

Seasonal flowers from left to right:

— wax flower (greenery)

— anenome

— leather leaf (greenery)

— ranunculus

— spray roses

Tools:

— floral clippers or shears

— scissors

— decorative edge craft scissors

— ribbon of various widths, lengths and textures

— yarn (optional)

— embroidery string (optional)

— wrapping paper (tissue doubled up or craft paper)

— washi tape

— rubber band (save the one that comes on your flower bundles/bunches)

Process your flowers by ridding them of all rubber bands (save one to hold your bouquet when finished) and snipping off the ends of each stem to freshen the flowers. De-thorn any flowers so no one gets pricked!

Once the stems are stripped of leaves and prepped, it’s time to arrange your bouquet! Starting with your greenery (in our case, wax flower and leather leaf), hold one stem in your hand and place another stem with your other hand to start creating the shape of your bouquet. It’s easier to create the foundation and shape with greenery first.

Once your shape of greenery is secure in your hand, start inserting stems of flowers.

Some helpful tips:

— Fill in with the bigger flowers first, as they will create a focal point, then fill in holes with smaller (filler) flowers.

— Remember to rotate your bouquet to see that it’s being filled in at every angle.

— Your shape can be free-flowing, loose, bunched or color gradient — the possibilities are countless.

— If you still feel like there are some holes to fill after you have inserted all desired flowers, you can refill with more greenery.

Once you love your shape and color story (and your arm muscles are tired), it’s time to bundle! Take your rubber band that you saved earlier and wrap it around a couple of the sturdier stems (the greenery usually has more strength).

Trim the bottom of each stem for a fresh cut so that they can easily drink the water. Also, make the ends somewhat even so you don’t have one super long stem. Congratulations! Your bouquet is complete!

You’re almost there — just a quick wrap and you’re ready to surprise that special someone. Choose your paper color or print of choice and cut a large rectangle using the decorative edge craft scissors. We put the completed bouquet on the paper to measure. Once cut, fold in a triangle.

Once folded, place the arrangement on top with the pointed edge of the triangle underneath the bulk of the bouquet. Fold up about three inches of paper over the stems, then fold over one side of the triangle. Tuck this into the side and fold over the other side of the triangle.

Secure with washi tape!

Prepare your ribbons by cutting the ends at a slanted angle to create a polished finish.

Line up your ribbons to vary in length so they all drape at different heights. Wrap around the middle of your paper, knot and voilà!

This is a perfect gift for special loved ones, family or galentines! We’d love to see your creations. Share them with us on Instagram with the hashtag #bristagram.

Valentine’s Day is all about love, but let’s be real: some gifts just don’t say “I adore you” the way they used to! While romancenever goes out of style, it’s easy for certain Valentine’s Day gifts to feel more like a last-minute grabthan a compassionate, heartfelt expression of love.

If you want to impress your special someone this Valentine's Day, it’s time to retire these 7 “outdated” and overdone gifts that scream predictable.

Scroll on for the 7 “outdated” Valentine’s Day gifts you should definitely skip this year – and what to give instead!

The Glorious Studio / PEXELS

1. Heart-shaped jewelry

Now don’t get me wrong – heart-shaped jewelry can be super cute, but oftentimes, it can feel a little cheesy and predictable for Valentine’s Day.

Instead, consider your Valentine’s personal interests and search for some jewelry that way. Whether it’s sports, animals, or astrology, you’ll surely be able to find something that suits them more closely.

Hassan Ouajbir / PEXELS

2. Huge teddy bears

Those big teddies – or even just the cheap stuffed animals from the drugstore – are not practical whatsoever and tend to collect dust. Unless you know of a very specific plush that your Valentine's been wanting, it’s okay to skip the stuffed animals.

Picjumbo / PEXELS

3. A dozen roses

While red roses can be a romantic gesture, there are so many other flowers to consider. Roses are simply generic AF and very expected – instead, get to the bottom of what your Valentine’s favorite flower is and run with that! From lilies to mums, you could even create your own bouquet with just a little extra effort.

Ksenia Chernaya / PEXELS

4. Fake plants

The same idea goes for fake plants. Why invest in a fake plant when a real one can be so much more meaningful? This way, every time your Valentine goes to water the plant you gave them, they’ll be thinking of you. ❤️

5. Matching gifts

Matching t-shirts, mugs, socks, and the like are honestly pretty cringeworthy, unless you’re really into them. Your Valentine will definitely appreciate a unique gift a lot more this year.

Amazon

6. Cheap chocolates

Cheap chocolates are good for a last-minute gift, but if you want your gift to feel special to your Valentine, please take the extra time (and money!) to opt for a fancier box. They’ll look better and taste better.

Jill Wellington / PEXELS

7. Anything impersonal

All of this goes to say that anything impersonal makes a cliche and outdated Valentine’s Day gift. You don’t even have to go insanely above and beyond for your date this year – just a little extra consideration will definitely make them feel loved.

Greta Gerwig's Narnia has generated some buzzy casting rumors over the last few months. Charli XCX, Daniel Craig, and even Joseph Quinn have all been a part of the rumor mill (but considering I've been waiting for news on this adaptation since it was acquired by Netflix in 2018, I'm not mad about all the chatter!). And the latest Narnia casting rumor has cause more conversation on the internet than anything else. Meryl Streep might be voicing Aslan.

Here's everything we know about the Aslan & Meryl Streep casting rumor in Greta Gerwig's Narnia movies.

Is Meryl Streep in the Narnia cast?

Meryl Streep is reportedly in talks to voice Aslan in Greta Gerwig's Narnia movies. The casting rumor first broke on March 31, leading some people to wonder if it was an early April Fool's Day joke, until Deadlineconfirmed the rumor on April 3. Fans of the book have called the choice everything from "interesting" to "cruel," and the conversation revolves around one particular question: are they making Aslan female?

A lot of Narnia fans were taken aback by the rumor about Meryl Streep because of the fact Aslan is an allegory for Jesus (referred to in the Bible as the Lion of Judah) — especially since Aslan's mane is such an integral part of the series, and lioness' typically don't have manes.

When the White Witch sacrifices Aslan on the Stone Table in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, she shaves off his mane in an attempt to shame him and strip away his identity as King of Narnia. Lucy Pevensie hiding her face in his mane in Prince Caspian plays a huge role in bolstering her courage and faith, and the mane even comes into play during The Last Battle before (spoiler alert) Narnia gets destroyed.

'Narnia' fans have a lot of opinions about a female Aslan.

The most iconic visual of the Narnia series, arguably more than the wardrobe or the lamppost, is Aslan's mane. "If it’s true that Aslan has been changed to a female lion in the upcoming film, it’s deeply troubling that the filmmakers would make the choice to visually distance itself from The Chronicles of Narnia as it has always been known to its fans and the public imagination," one Narnia fan wrote on NarniaWeb. "It would be hard to look at a decision like that and not think that they were deliberately disassociating from the Narnia canon."

Another fan on NarniaWeb points out that having Meryl potentially voice a male Aslan "would be a fine way to convey the genderless nature of the soul. Aslan transcends all of that and was never bound by the idea of duality in the way that the ‘fallen’ believe they are."

@bereckerwentviral for his claim that fans who are upset about the casting simply "hate women" (yes, some of the backlash to Meryl's casting rumor has been atrocious). "I would like to officially say that if I die, I would be more than honored if Meryl Streep were to play me in my biopic, she’s the greatest to ever do it," he said in the comments.

"Meryl was hired based on merit. She’s the best," another Instagram user said in the comments.

However, Netflix hasn't confirmed Meryl Streep as Aslan.

Disney/Walden Media

Let the record show that, as of writing this story on April 7, Netflix hasn't actually confirmed anything about the movie outside Greta as director and Atonement cinematographer Seamus McGarvey as Director of Photography. Whether the film is a The Magician's Nephew adaptation, whether Daniel Craig is playing Uncle Andrew, and whether Meryl Streep is actually voicing Aslan are speculation at this point.

As one viral tweet puts it, "Increasingly convinced Greta either has no idea what she wants to do with this movie or has a vision so incredible nobody else can see it." Stay tuned for official casting announcements!
