This Is the BEST Way to Put Together a Gallery Wall on a Budget

Every home needs a few pieces of wall art, but we all know not everyone’s budget includes art expenses. That’s where our handy wall art DIY comes in. We grabbed a few sheets of paper and some brushes and made an entire gallery wall out of watercolor in one sitting! As someone who’s never been a fan of painting with watercolors (I lean more towards the controlling side of the creative spectrum and this flowy watery business makes me nervous), I found it was surprisingly simple to put this together using a few tips and tricks as well as some online watercolor inspiration.

final1

While you may be thinking, “pssh, how am I going to really make a whole gallery wall myself?” never fear. I’ll walk you through making your own versions of the eight watercolor designs pictured above. But if you want to really step up your game and explore other styles of watercolor, check out our Watercolor Painting and Illustration with Watercolor online classes.

Materials:

– watercolor paper

– watercolor paints

– paintbrushes

– paint palette

– painter’s tape

(included in our Watercolor Painting Kit)

Additional Supplies:

– ruler

– pencil

– scissors

– thin paintbrush

– assorted picture frames

(not included in the kit)

Instructions:

1. Tape down one piece of watercolor paper using your painter’s tape.

2. Measure out rectangles to fit the size of your frames.

3. Lightly draw in the basic outline of your design or pattern in pencil.

4. Paint a very light wash of watercolor onto your drawing, staying within the boundaries of your pencil lines.

5. Go back over your painted sections with a darker version of each color to add contrast.

6. Add any additional details or finishing touches and let your paintings dry completely.

7. Cut out your paintings using scissors, pop them into the right sized frames and hang them up.

Grab your watercolor supplies and a collection of frames in different sizes and colors and let’s get started!

Marble Pattern

Set yourself up for success by taping down a sheet of watercolor paper to your table and measuring out two rectangles to fit the size of your frames.

Next you’ll want to lightly draw a wavy marble pattern in pencil. Let your pencil go with the flow and just put down some irregular curvy lines moving from left to right across the page. This is a good design to start with because its supposed to be really loose and random.

Now that you have a basic outline down it’s time to start coloring it in. Mix up a light peachy pink with your brush and a lot of water and fill in every other “stripe” of your marble outline.

While you wait for the pink side to dry, go ahead and paint in a light blue wash on the other side just like you did with the pink.

Once your pink side has dried a bit, go back over some of your lines in a darker pink here and there to add contrast. For a last finishing touch, add a bit of light orange or yellow to add more depth to your marbled pattern.

Now repeat this same technique on the blue side, adding your own flair with dots and lines if you’d like. If your first set of paintings don’t look quite right to you, the good news is its only paper. You can redo these paintings as many times as you like until you get something you’re happy with.

Gemstones

We’ve seen these watercolor gemstone prints all over the place lately and it turns out they’re CRAZY EASY to paint yourself. First lightly sketch out a quartz shape in pencil. This does not have to look exact at all, as long as you break your gemstone into facets. Kind of like how a soccer ball is covered in hexagons, this quartz design is covered in triangles and rectangles that connect and usually come to a point at the ends.

This painting technique is seriously a piece of cake. First wash a very very light watery purple over your segmented shapes, or “facets,” making sure to leave a thin gap of white between each shape. Before your painting has a chance to dry too much, wash a second layer of darker purples and blues over half of your facets to make them appear like they’re in shadow. Set your painting aside to dry and get started on the next set.

Florals

You know the drill by now. Lightly draw your design in pencil, staying within the dimensions of the frames you’ll eventually use. Here we drew a flower pattern on the left and a close-up of a single leaf on the right.

Start out with a light wash of orange (or the color of your choice) to fill in the flower petals and then add darker colors and small details as you go. If you want the light and dark colors to blend together paint them while the first layer is still wet. If you want colors to stand out by themselves, wait for the first layer to dry before you add the second layer.

For this leaf closeup, we added a light wash of green and then immediately put down some darker green so the two colors blended together. Then we let it dry for a few minutes before adding some more defined dark green stripes on top.

Lettering + Animals

This next step is a two for one – brush lettering AND cute little animals.

We decided to make little mini paintings of the family pets, using the same techniques as before. These may be a little more advanced so take some time to practice sketching before diving in with watercolor.

Dip your fine tip paintbrush into a more saturated color than you would usually start with and carefully write in your phrase. This part may look daunting, but keep practicing your lettering on a side piece of paper or take our Brush Calligraphy online class if you really want to build up your skills.

Add in a few more color details onto your animal watercolors and then let everything dry completely.

Once all of your pieces are dry, cut them out along your first pencil line.

Look at those pretty paintings! Play around with a few different arrangements until you get a layout that you like.

Pop your watercolor paintings into frames, making sure to mix up the colors, materials and thicknesses of your frames to give your gallery wall some added personality.

Paper Object No. 5 By The Miuus Studio

This simple use of shapes is so incredibly effective. The dark, halved circle draws your eyes right to the center, with the lines leading you outward as you look on. That effect makes "Paper Object No. 5" the perfect addition to your gallery wall, IMO.

Color Blocks Framed Wall Canvases

These framed wall canvases certainly make a statement with their colorful nature. Filled with shades of yellows, blues, and reds, the primary colors shine in their simplicity.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith shocked fans when their "perfect" marriage seemed to implode in 2020 following the revelation the latter was involved in an "entanglement" with R&B singer August Alsina (via New York Post). Alsina alleged he'd had a permissive conversation with Will Smith that led to his fling with Jada Pinkett Smith: "I actually sat down with Will and had a conversation due to the transformation from their marriage to life partnership…he gave me his blessing."

This, along with candid revelations on Pinkett-Smith's former showRed Table Talk, made fans believe she was the cause for her marriage's demise, but both her and Will Smith's memoirs revealed a closer look behind their celebrity facades. Not only did Jada seem to sacrifice a lot, but Will Smith made it clear he's not the saint people think he is.

Their marriage may be unconventional, but they're making it work despite new reports they're no longer living together (gasp).

Here's the latest juicy details about Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith's marriage status.

How long have Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith been living apart?

Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images and Kevin Winter/Getty Images

We shouldn't be surprised that Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith aren't under the same roof, but it's still startling. According to PEOPLE, even though they “are still together,” the couple "have had separate homes for years."

Do they plan to get divorced in the future?

David Livingston/Getty Images

This is where things get confusing because Will and Jada have been separated since 2016. When the latter dropped this bombshell news last year on the Today show, fans weren't sure they could trust the couple's public images anymore. It didn't help that they're against divorcing each other either.

As of now, People's source saidthe couple are doing what works for them. "Call it what you want. They are living their own lives but haven’t completely severed ties."

What have they said about their marriage in the past?

David Livingston/Getty Images

Jada Pinkett Smith appeared on an episode of the PRETTYSMARTpodcast last year where she revealed more about her and Will's marriage. "Marriage is not a fairy tale. It's not. It's devastating and I fought, and I screamed, and I scratched for a long time," she said before adding, "As much as Will and I have tried to get away from each other, it's not happening."

Will Smith also offered his own thoughts about their marriage last year by saying, "When you’ve been with someone for more than half your life, a sort of emotional blindness sets in,” he said (via Variety). He also said it doesn't take much to "lose your sensitivity" to "hidden nuances and subtle beauties."

How long have Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith been married?

Will and Jada have been married for almost 28 years after tying the knot in 1997 (via Brides). That's almost 3 decades of intertwined lives so we understand why they're not 100 percent willing to turn their backs on each other.

Only time will tell if they decide if their marriage is truly worth saving or if it's time to call it quits.

Do you think it's time for Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith to breakup or should they continue making things work? Share your thoughts with us on Facebook!

Play With Color + Texture

Consider your existing color scheme at home and choose art pieces that complement or contrast them. Bold, vibrant artwork can breathe new life into a neutral room, while textured pieces can add depth and playfulness to a minimal design. Want to give a piece you love the spotlight? Enhance the impact of your art with accent lights or natural light (just make sure to protect it as directed).

Rotate And Refresh

What’s fun about a personal art collection is that you can swap it in a new space for an instant refresh. Consider changing art with the seasons or moving art from one room to the next to give it more exposure in a high-traffic space.

Once you’ve begun to curate art pieces that resonate with you, it’s essential to take good care of your purchases so they’ll stand the test of time and continue to bring you joy.

Here are a few tips on how to preserve your art for a lifetime:

  1. Avoid hanging artwork in direct sunlight or in a space with extreme fluctuations in temperature. Sunlight can cause fading overtime, so explore UV-filtering framing options and be mindful of how the light can change in your space throughout the year.
  2. Keep a microfiber cloth or soft, clean brush on hand for routine dusting and cleaning of your art. Avoid any chemical cleaning solutions or water that could damage the work.
  3. Research the art trends associated with your work and learn more about the creator behind the art so you can take pride in the pieces you’ve curated and feel super knowledgeable about them.

Treat your art with love and care, and let your imagination run wild to create a collection that is truly a reflection of you and your creativity!

Babe wake up, Knives Out 3 is officially on its way! It's been almost two years since we saw Benoit Blanc solve his second case in Netflix's Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. The film (which stars Janelle Monae, Madelyn Cline, and Kathryn Hahn) followed a case of secret identities, intrigue, and also received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, NBD. On May 24, 2024 Netflix confirmed that Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is coming, and on June 10, they confirmed filming began outside London!

Here's everything you need to know about Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, including a first look at the characters.

Your first official look at Josh O'Connor in 'Knives Out 3'

John Wilson/Netflix

All I've been able to think about since the first set pictures leaked (see below) is "move over Fleabag Hot Priest!" Our first official look at Josh O'Connor (whose character name we still don't know) and Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc features the duo inside a cathedral with a seriously gloomy atmosphere. I'm willing to bet this is the middle of Benoit's investigation — and I'm hoping Josh is there every step of the way. Who knows; maybe that black jacket will be the new Chris Evans white sweater.

TikTok · joshurro🥨

Our first look at Josh O'Connor on the set of Knives Out 3 totally confirmed my personal hope and theory the movie would be set around a graveyard, and it's also the second time Josh has played a priest. He starred in 2020's Emma as Mr. Elton!

Your first look at Benoit Blanc in 'Knives Out 3'

Netflix

Benoit Blanc is debuting a brand new look in the new Knives Out movie. The black and white filter goes perfectly with the Wake Up Dead Man title, and is also reminding me a bit of Frankenstein.

What is the movie Wake Up Dead Man about?

Lionsgate

Daniel Craig narrates the official Instagram announcement, saying, "In the beginning, the knives came out. Then, behold, the glass was shattered. But my most dangerous case yet is about to be revealed." The title Wake Up Dead Man definitely sounds scary, so I wouldn't be surprised if the story took place around a graveyard.

I'm expecting it to be extra spooky after actor Josh Brolin (who you'll recognize from Dune and as the voice of Thanos) told New York City Comic Con that the story "scared" him.

"I read it and I was just like, 'God, this is so well written. We just don't read things like this anymore,'" he said during the panel (via People). "It turned out that it was a cast, a lot of people who I had worked with, a lot of people who I loved and hadn't met yet, like Andrew Scott and Josh O'Connor, and people like that...Then doing it turned out, I mean, still one of my favorite jobs that I've ever had."

"I can't say what I played," he continued. "It scared me, which I wanted to be scared."

Is there going to be a Knives Out 3?

Image via Netflix

Yes, we're getting a Knives Out 3! Netflix bought the rights to at least two more Knives Out movies following the success of the first film in the fall of 2019. And on May 24, the official Instagram account confirmed the third movie, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, will be hitting our screens soon. The movie will feature Benoit Blanc's "most dangerous case yet."

When is Knives Out 3 coming out?

Netflix

Knives Out 3 is coming in 2025. While we don't have a specific release date yet, the title and graphics for Wake Up Dead Man is definitely giving spooky Halloween vibes. Hopefully we can add it to our list of our Favorite Halloween Movies!

Will Wake Up Dead Man be on Netflix?

Yes, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery will be available to stream on Netflix.

Who's in the cast of Knives Out 3?

Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for The Met Museum/Vogue

Our first Knives Out 3 cast members are here! In addition to Daniel Craig, we'll see Challengers' Josh O’Connor and Priscilla's Cailee Spaeny. Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church are also in the cast of Wake Up Dead Man.

Considering the franchise has Madelyn Cline, Chris Evans, Janelle Monae, and Ana de Armas, I knew Netflix wouldn't disappoint!

Is Knives Out 1 connected to Knives Out 2?

Lionsgate

Knives Out 2 is a standalone sequel to the first Knives Out movie. So Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc helps with each case, even if the rest of the characters don't know each other. I'm expecting Knives Out 3 to follow that same format.

This post has been updated.

The ‘90s hails as one of the best decades for offering iconic pop culture moments, shows, and movies. But, it was an entirely different decade — one that was almost 26 years ago. Filmmakers hadn’t a clue what would change in our ever-evolving world, so I’ll cut them some slack there, but some movies have a premise that now makes you go, huh? And if you don't believe me, check out these '90s movies that I'm pretty sure wouldn't get made today.

Here are the ten '90s movies I think wouldn’t stand a chance with audiences if they were made today.

1. She’s All That (1999)

Miramax

She’s All That would not be all that if it were released in 2025in 2025. Starring Freddie Prinze Jr., who is not to blame at all for the controversial plot (we love Freddie), She’s All That reinforces the “nerdy girl turned prom queen by a popular jock” trope. In the end, the jock falls in love with her – shocker! Maybe we have She’s All That to thank for women in movies simply taking off their glasses and looking like looking like a totally different person – as if it’s ever that easy.

2. American Beauty (1999)

Dreamworks

American Beauty would make people cringe in their oversized, plush movie seats if it were to come out today. Ignoring the fact Kevin Spacey is the film’s protagonist, the premise is all kinds of creepy. A grown man becomes increasingly attracted to his daughter’s ((yes I said daughter)) friend as the movie courses through its two--hour runtime. Something in me tells me this romanticized version of perversion would definitely not be made today.

3. Forrest Gump (1994)

Paramount Pictures

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good viewing of Forrest Gump.. WhoWho doesn’t? It’s a classic tale about a man named Forrest, played by Tom Hanks, narrating audiences through his untamed life account. It’s virtually harmless, disregarding the fact that Hank’s character has an IQ of 75 as well as a physical disability. It’s hard to imagine modern audiences responding as well to this as it could be seen as a crude representation of people with disabilities. While it may not be made today, it’s an inspiring story nonetheless where Hank’s character wins in the end.

4. There’s Something About Mary (1998)

20th Century Fox

I recently took it upon myself to watch this "classic," and it was underwhelming and a tad jarring for multiple reasons. The most prominent was its main plot point of men stalking a woman strictly based on her looks. Not very demure, and definitely not very mindful!

5. American Pie (1999)

Universal Pictures

Where do I begin with American Pie? It may be blatant to most, but American Pie would be scrutinized to no end if it were released today, mainly due to its exploitative scenes and portrayal of teenage sexuality. It features scenes that were considered raunchy at the time – the BIG one being a teenager filming himself having sex with an unconsenting girl – but the humor doesn’t hold up (as it shouldn’t) and would face much more scrutiny if made today (as it should)... Nevertheless, it was a comical movie in its heyday.

6. Hackers (1995)

United Artists

Hackers wouldn’t be made in 2025 for one simple reason: the technology is far superior now. The concept of a group of teenagers hacking into a computer system is far too simplistic for younger audiences who probably delete scam text messages on the daily. It now reigns as a cult classic, but I’d like to think it’s purely for nostalgic sentiment.

7. Chasing Amy (1997)

Miramax

A man going after a lesbian woman who “transforms” into being straight, yeah I’m going to have to say this film is pretty dated.. While it pales in comparison to the backlash the film receives today, the film garnered criticism from the LGBTQ+ community soon after its release. According to Entertainment Weekly, Ellen DeGeneres walked out of a screening of the film in 1997.

8. Dazed and Confused (1993)

Gramercy Pictures

Dazed and Confused is considered a lighthearted cult classic, but the film wouldn’t be praised as such if it were made today. As years have gone by, the fictional context the film’s premise is built on isn’t so fictional today. There’s hazing, bullying, and sexual innuendos amongst teens that are featured in an outdated, insensitive light. All of this is portrayed as a fact of ’90s highschool life giving into the notion that things such as bullying is normal and accepted. Now, if those same plot points are in a film, they’re usually put into a negative light, as they should be. Nevertheless, Dazed and Confused remains a nostalgic 90s watch for a lot of viewers. After all, we have this movie to thank for the iconic Matthew McConaughey line “alright, alright, alright.”

9. Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)

20th Century Fox

As comical and heartwarming as Mrs. Doubtfire is, it has just as many red flags. In the midst of a divorce, a woman’s ex-husband invades her privacy and dresses up as their children’s nanny to spend time with them when he quite literally has a court order not to do so – oh? When you look at this film's plot with a bird’s eye view, it seems invasive and alarming, and that’s because it is. Though, I’m willing to forgive this film’s evident issues for the mere fact that Sally Field and Robin Williams are a dream team and gave wonderful performances in their respective roles.

10. Never Been Kissed (1999)

20th Century Fox

What was considered a cute rom-com in 1999, Never Been Kissed would now be considered quite the opposite. When watching, it’s easy to forget that Drew Barrymore’s character falls in love with a teacher, while she’s disguised as a teenage high school student. If your reaction was to be revolted, I can’t blame you. Let’s have this ‘90s film and its weird plot stay put in the past.
