Why Double Cleansing Could Save Your Blemished Skin, According To Experts

double cleansing

Have you ever washed your face and then used a makeup wipe after to see that there was still leftover makeup and residue all over? That, my friends, is the importance of the double cleansing method. A lot of beauty methods can be gimmicky, but this one is the real deal.

We're going back to the basics of skincare: cleansing, applying serums, and moisturizing — except we're going to add an additional cleanse to the beginning of this routine. See, throughout the day your skin builds up oil and dirt that can't be removed by one simple cleanse or makeup wipe. For this, you need a deeper cleanse with oil and water to really make sure you're getting every last stitch of makeup and residue off your face.

We asked the experts Elizabeth Donat(20-year beauty industry expert),Kylee Kintis (esthetician and skincare expert), Jennifer Wassner (founder of Belovedtan), and Dr. Hannah Kopelman (certified dermatologist) about this Korean-influenced skincare method, so keep reading to hear all their thoughts and recommendations below!

What is the double-cleansing method?

Nordstrom

Double-cleansing is exactly what you'd expect it to be: simply washing your face twice! Except for this method, you specifically want to wash with an oil-based product, followed by a water-based product. This is so you can ensure your face is getting fully cleansed of all dirt and excess grime. It was developed from K-beauty (Korean beauty) trends that Korean women have been doing for years. It's a method to fully cleanse your face, in order to let your skincare products better work and soak into your skin.

20 year beauty industry expert, Elizabeth Donat says, "Think of properly double cleansing your skin the same way you tackle a pile of dirty dishes in your sink: the initial cleanse removes the surface-level food and grime, followed by a thorough, sudsy second cleanse to ensure they're truly clean. The second cleanse, much like running the dishes through a dishwasher, penetrates deeper and completes the cleansing process. It breaks up dead skin cells, unclogs pores, and kickstarts cell turnover, essential for maintaining youthful, radiant skin. "

That's such a great way to think about it! You want to rinse off your face with the first, and the really wash it to penetrate through the grime and get it to look pristine!

Does double cleansing actually help?

When we don't fully cleanse, our other skincare products (think serums and moisturizers) aren't penetrating our skin barrier as deep, so becoming somewhat ineffective. With the double cleansing method, they're able to fully absorb and do their job because they have a clean base to work with!

Esthetician and skincare expert, Kylee Kintis, gave us the scoop on what double cleansing actually does. She says, "Double cleansing is essential to any good skincare routine. This is important to prevent breakouts, improve the absorption of your products, and so much more! My favorite way to double cleanse is to first use an oil based or balm cleanser to break up makeup, sunscreen, dirt, and pollution accumulated throughout the day."

Sounds like something you need to add to your regimen immediately!

Should you double cleanse everyday?

Sephora

Double cleansing is perfectly fine to do everyday as long as you're sticking to your typical oil-based cleanser first, followed by a water-based cleanser. This will ensure that you're not being too harsh on the skin. Also, make sure to stay away from exfoliants or scrubs; save those for a different day! Too many exfoliants can leave your skin raw and sensitive. So, as long as you're following our steps, it's great to do everyday to make sure you're fully cleansing your skin of makeup and dirt!

What are some misconceptions around double-cleansing?

Farmhouse Fresh Goods

Some common misconceptions about double cleansing are that you can skip out on the oil cleanser, or to use face washes with over-exfoliating properties that are too harsh on the skin. We want to make sure we're using an oil cleanser first, because this will really penetrate through all of our makeup and dirt on our face. And we want to also make sure that we're not using too harsh of ingredients or exfoliants on the day-to-day. This will leave your skin very sensitive and raw, which we want to avoid with this method. So stick to oil and water-based products, and gentle ingredient so as to not over-exfoliate!

Another common mistake is to not moisturize enough after you double cleanse. If you're fully cleansing your skin and stripping it of natural oils, then you want to properly moisturize and hydrate it to bring it back to life. This will lock in moisture, and help promote healthier and glowy looking skin.

What are some expert-approved cleanser recommendations?

Queen Latifah is one of the Black women who made watching Livin' Single an anticipated event in my household. Prior to producer and screenwriter Mara Brock Ali's Girlfriends, I remember watching Latifah's character (Khadijah) run the helm of the fictitious Flavor magazine. I didn't know it then, but seeing her navigate having a career, roommates, friends, and romantic relationships gave me a taste of what comes with adulthood.

With more than two decades of acting under her belt, it's time that we paid our respects to Queen Latifah's rom-com legacy. Partially without her, I wouldn't have known it was possible for diverse Black characters to have funny, love-filled adventures that aren't always rooted in trauma. While those stories deserve to be told, Queen Latifah helped show me that Black people aren't monolithic. That shared experiences and perspectives or backgrounds can exist within our culture.

But, don't just take my word for it. Here's 6 of Queen Latifah's movies that I think you should binge watch before the month is over!

MGM Studios

Beauty Shop

In Beauty Shop, Queen Latifah plays Gina Norris, a widowed hair dresser with a young daughter. She initially works at an upscale salon, but decides to quit when she can no longer stand her toxic environment. Deciding to open her own business, she experiences a series of ups and downs during the hiring and renovation process. But, time eventually finds her finding great success as a beauty salon owner and she even finds love again.

I love watching Beauty Shop because I have fond memories of listening to older women's conversations at the hair salons I used to go to. Actually, I still remember my favorite hairstylist's name — Ms. Tanya — who had a personality similar to Gina in Beauty Shop.

IMO, it's one of the most commercially accurate depictions of what happens in hair salons. Not only that, but it humanizes those who are in the beauty industry.

Paramount Pictures

Last Holiday

Besides Beauty Shop, Last Holiday is my second favorite Queen Latifah rom-com. She immerses herself into the world of Georgia Byrd — a painfully shy woman who works in the cookware department of a large retail store — and makes viewers believe that's exactly who she is. She even has a huge crush on her co-worker, but she's too afraid to say anything to him.

It's an incredible movie because we get to see Georgia spend time being in the background of her own life until a scary diagnosis causes her to live life to the fullest. She travels to the Czech Republic and begins indulging in things she never allowed herself to. From dressing in the finest designer clothes to BASE jumping, she learns what it means to do things that scare you.

If you're wondering, OF COURSE she finally admits her feelings to her crush! In fact, he's there to support her when she decides to open her own restaurant towards the end of Last Holiday.

While finding love is always fun, I love the other messages in this movie like not waiting for the perfect moment to enjoy life and being careful not to judge a book by its cover.

Searchlight Pictures

Just Wright

As Leslie Wright, Queen Latifah is a no-nonsense physical therapist. As successful as she in her career, Latifah's character can't get out of the friend zone. Still, she moves on and buys a home that she ends up sharing with her close friend Morgan.

The two are polar opposites because Morgan only cares about being the token wife of a successful NBA player. She eventually gets her wish when Morgan meets one of the New Jersey Nets top basketball player, Scott McKnight. He's immediately intrigued by Morgan's deceptiveness and hastily proposes to her months later.

After an accident that threatens Scott's career, Leslie becomes his physical therapist and doesn't cut him any slack. Eventually the two discover they're interested in each other and begin to become closer after Morgan decides she's not cut out for helping him recover.

This movie stands out to me because we've often joked about putting men in the friend zone, but I like to think we're all familiar with how it feels when our crush doesn't like us. So, seeing this successful, talented, and gorgeous woman decide not to become embittered by her initial lack of a love life is inspiring.

It doesn't hurt that she eventually secures a high-paying role AND a flourishing love life with someone she never intended to fall in love with.

Searchlight Pictures

Brown Sugar

Brown Sugar doesn't center the character Queen Latifah plays (Francine), but she does serve as the literal definition of a supporting actress. In the movie, she plays the cousin of Sidney (Sanaa Lathan) and consistently encourages her to admit how she really feels about her best friend Dre (Taye Diggs).

While her love life isn't the main focus, Francine notices that Cavi (played by Mos Def), an artist Dre is working with, is too shy to truly initiate something romantic with her. Ever the confident woman, she asks him on a date and all ends well.

Universal Pictures

Girls Trip

Queen Latifah's character Sasha is more focused on trying to secure clients to help her mounting bills than she is about dating — but she does recognize that her best friend Ryan Pierce (Regina Hall) is married to a cheating, narcissistic man. This causes tension between the two because they're each hiding the nature of what's truly going on with them, but they eventually are able to piece together their friendship.

What makes this movie partially a rom-com is because we see each other ladies — Ryan, Sasha, Lisa (Jada Pinkett Smith), and Dina (Tiffany Haddish) — come to terms with their own version of love. Sometimes it just happens when you're having fun at a music festival with your best friends.

Sony Pictures

The Perfect Holiday

Last but not least, The Perfect Holiday is a feel-good Christmas movie where Queen Latifah plays an angel called Mrs. Christmas. She and Bah Humbug (Terrance Howard) work behind the scenes to orchestrate whether Benjamin (Morris Chestnut) and Nancy (Gabrielle Union) will be able to find romantic love in each other.

It's one of those fun Christmas movies that the entire family can watch, especially if everyone loves seeing how much frenzy the winter holiday can cause for people — and how much joy it can bring in the end!

Knowing your hair type is one of the most valuable and beneficial things to your hair health — especially when it comes to the porosity of your hair. Hair porosity means the level at which your hair absorbs moisture or water, and it's categorized as low, medium, or high. Sometimes, low porosity hair — which is slower to absorb water — can keep you from getting the proper hydration to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy.

Dr. Ross Kopelman, hair transplant surgeon, explained, "Low porosity hair has tightly closed cuticles that make it difficult for moisture to penetrate the hair shaft. This can lead to dryness and product buildup, as products tend to sit on the hair rather than being absorbed." He also mentioned that this can lead to breakage and tangling since your hair is having a hard time retaining moisture.

Luckily, there's a way to help low porosity hair maintain its health, get rid of excess buildup, and retain moisture through specific products like shampoos and masks. I talked to experts Clyde Haygood (celebrity hairstylist), Dr. Ross Kopelman(hair surgeon and expert), and Kseniya Popova (lead chemist and head of R&D for The Rootist) to get all their product recommendations for the best low porosity hair products to try right now!

Amazon

SheaMoisture Hair Mask

Dr. Ross Kopelman recommended this hair mask from SheaMoisture, noting that it will help heal your hair cuticles and allow products to more deeply penetrate the hair. This is exactly what we're looking for, since with low porosity hair, products have a hard time reaching your hair cuticles and fully absorbing. This will also help any breakage you might've gotten given your hair type!

Amazon

Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave-In Conditioner

This was another great leave-in recommended by Dr. Kopelman to help repair breakage and attract moisture. He says that it has glycerin and honey which both help your low porosity hair to really retain the moisture in a light, non-greasy way.

Amazon

The Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo

If you're needing a bit of a deeper cleanse but have very sensitive hair, then this recommendation from Dr. Kopelman might be just what you're looking for! He let us know that this shampoo is thorough and effective, yet still gentle for any sensitive hair-types! According to his solid advice, you only need to use it once a month to remove any buildup that might be preventing your hair from being able to fully absorb moisture!

Amazon

The Rootist AHA Pre-Shampoo

Lead Chemist and Head of R&D for The Rootist, Kseniya Popova, says that this pre-shampoo is great for the low porosity hair gals! She gave us great insight by saying, "This pre-shampoo treatment is fantastic for those with low porosity who want to target product build-up and excess oil. The alpha hydroxy acids glycolic acid and lactic acid and apple cider vinegar help to gently exfoliate without stripping natural, healthy oils that need to coat the hair."

The Rootist

BioBrew Fermented Strengthening Serum

Kseniya Popova also told us about this great strengthening serum from her company, The Rootist! She says that it is a great serum that has super nourishing ingredients like moringa oil, along with vitamin C that help to condition cuticles and boost hydration. And bonus! They added a heat-protecting active, for up to 450 degrees, that is super beneficial to low porosity hair when using hot tools like curling irons and hair dryers.

The Rootist

Strengthen Concentrated Shampoo and Conditioner

Kseniya also recommended this amazing shampoo and conditioner duo from her company that she says is great for low porosity hair. She explained that they help to cleanse the roots, scalp, and hair without causing damage or stripping moisture — exactly what you need for cleansing low porosity hair without stripping away all the natural oils and moisture excessively. Kseniya said, "It is necessary to strengthen low porosity hair fibers because they are prone to brittleness and breakage. The Strengthen Concentrated Shampoo contains yuzu ceramides and hydrolyzed proteins that will help to strengthen the hair fibers of low porosity hair. And the Strengthen Concentrated Conditioner contains coating emollients, such as coconut oil, acai oil, rice brand and passion fruit oils that lock in necessary moisture" This means that you'll really be able to lock in moisture, down to the root!

Amazon

Pura D'or Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo

We got a great recommendation from celebrity hairstylist, Clyde Haygood, when it comes to drier low porosity hair. He says this shampoo will be great because it infuses biotin, keratin and caffeine to boost hair health and shine in a lightweight formula. This mean it won't be too heavy or greasy, but still helping to retain moisture.

Amazon

Pura D'or Hair Thinning Therapy

Dealing with hair thinningand low porosity? Well, hair expert Clyde Haygood has just the thing for you. He said this mask is one of his favorite products for how it hydrates the hair, targeting both hair thinning and low porosity. He also added, " Using a hair mask once a week is also a great way to strengthen strands and protect hair from heat styling damage. I also love that it’s free from harsh chemicals, hypo-allergenic, vegan and cruelty free which is ideal for all hair types." Sounds like just what we're looking for!

Foodies and TV show fans alike are in for a treat because not only is The Bear season 3 streaming now, but The Bear season 4 has already filmed! On March 14, Deadline reported that Jeremy Allen White's hit show was secretly renewed for a fourth season (sneaky, sneaky!). Not only has it been renewed, but season 4 filmed back-to-back with season 3, which premiered June 26 on FX and Hulu. Given the popularity of The Bear cast and all their new projects (Inside Out 2! Fantastic Four!), I am definitely not complaining. Here's everything you need to know about The Bear season 4.

Will there be season 4 of The Bear?

Chuck Hodes/FX

Yes, The Bear season 4 is on its way! FX renewed the series ahead of the season 3 release so that both seasons can film back-to-back. While some fans are wondering if this means season 4 of The Bear will be the final season (which is what happened with Donald Glover's Atlanta), this filming schedule could also be a way to ensure the senior season isn't delayed. Because The Bear cast is booking so many new projects, filming season 4 in 2024 means we should be able to see it in 2025. If you ask me, The Bear is one show that could run for at least six seasons, if not more!

During the press conference for season 3, the cast talked started teasing season 4. "We did something like [filming back-to-back]," Jeremy Allen White says (via Decider), while Ayo Edebiri adds, "Yeah, a little version of it, sort of. But not exactly...Is that helpful for journalism?"

"You’ll have to find out!" Abby Elliot says.

When will The Bear season 4 come out?

Chuck Hodes/FX

Even though they've already filmed The Bear season 4, we probably won't see it until summer 2025. Every season of The Bear so far has released in June (season 1 released in 2022, season 2 in 2023, and season 3 in 2024), so we're hoping The Bear season 4 will premiere in June 2025. By filming seasons 3 and 4 together, they'll be able to get all the filming done so season 4 is totally ready by the time they want to release it.

Who will be in The Bear season 4 cast?

FX

Since they filmed season 3 and season 4 of The Bear back-to-back, it's safe to assume all our favorite stars will return! The Bear cast includes Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Abby Elliott, Matty Matheson. Fingers crossed we get to see guest stars like Will Poulter, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Sarah Paulson again!

What is the plot line of The Bear?

Chuck Hodes/FX

Seasons 1 of The Bear follows Carmy (Jeremy Allen White), who returns to Chicago to take over his late brother's restaurant The Beef. There's ton of friction when he doesn't fit in with the rest of the kitchen, but with newcomer Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) and his sister Natalie (Abby Elliott), they set out to turn The Beef into a brand new restaurant that will change the Chicago food scene forever.

Season 2 is all about the team renovating the restaurant into something upscale and chic, while season 3 follows their first few months open.

When is season 3 of The Bear streaming?

Matt Dinerstein/FX

You can watch all 10 episodes of The Bear season 3 on Hulu now!
