Yeah, Dua Lipa Launched Another Celeb Book Club. Here Are 8 Reasons We Already Love It.

service95 dua lipa's book club

You and I have chatted about all the best reads for awhile, from mysteries to rom-coms, but did you know about all the titles in Dua Lipa's book clubService95? I admittedly had zero idea about it until recently, and couldn't believe how many thought-provoking recommendations she has.

There are two things that differentiate Dua Lipa's book club from others I've covered. The first is that Service95 has a range of global storylines that highlight historical moments, identity, love, sex, and betrayal. The second is the fact Dua Lipa shares her thoughts about her monthly reads onsite.

If I'm being 100 percent honest, it feels like Emma Watson's former book club and Dua Lipa's are cousins because they open the door for important conversations that aren't always steeped in escapism. I love immersing myself in spicy romance and thriller books, but I'm also moved by those that make me think about society and the world at-large.

Here's the top 8 reads I'm personally going to start with.

Service95's July 2024 Pick:

Amazon

Noughts + Crosses by Malorie Blackman

Noughts + Crosses reverses the roles of the racism and classism we're familiar with. Readers are introduced to the Crosses and the noughts in a world where privilege looks vastly different. Sephy is a gorgeous, dark-skinned girl who's lonely despite the wealth that surrounds her. She's also not a fan of how unfair life is for those who are less fortunate than her, including Callum, whose only duty is to serve the upper crust of society.
Despite their differences, Sephy and Callum have been friends for as long as they can remember, but their friendship has grown into a burning passion they eventually give into. But because their love is extremely forbidden, they'll have to fight for it, especially against those who will stop at nothing to tear them apart.
Here's what Dua Lipa said about the moving novel:
"Noughts + Crosses is set in a parallel world that resembles Britain, in which Black people (Crosses) are the ruling class, and white people (noughts) exist as second-class citizens," said Dua Lipa (via Service95). "Although written over 20 years ago, Sephy’s father would not be out of place in today’s populist political landscape. As Sephy and Callum’s relationship evolves, questions are asked about love, betrayal and belonging. It’s pacey, romantic, tortured and enlightening. What more could a young reader ask for."

Service95's November 2023 Pick:

The Vanishing Halfby Brit Bennett

Though the Vignes sisters are identical twins, they lead different lives as adults. One sister remains in the Black community they grew up in while the other passes as a white woman. What's interesting is that not only does this sister's husband know nothing about who she really is, but both twins have daughters.
No matter how much they've tried to escape their past in their own way, the sisters' lives continue to intersect. This has a trickle down effect on their daughters, who are the unintentional faces and voices of the next generation in their family.
Here's what Dua Lipa said about the moving novel:
“This book brilliantly surfaces a multitude of questions about race, class, and gender, told through a family drama that spans three generations in 20th-century America," said Dua Lipa (via Service95). "I was struck by how the novel so cleverly raises questions of heritage and identity while remaining non-judgmental, empathetic, and full of heart. I raced through this book and I’m sure you will too."

Becoming Cliterateby Laurie Mintz, Ph.D.

I'm not squeamish when it comes to talking about sex, but there are still some topics I'm not 100 percent well-versed on, and I'm not alone.
Dr. Laurie Mintz, Ph.D. wrote Becoming Cliterate as a way to breakdown all the fluff we've been fed about sex and gender via pop culture. She even broaches the topic of women's orgasms and a glaring pleasure gap that exists by sharing hard-hitting statistics. She shares evidence from sex therapy, sociology, and more to back up her findings while even giving readers a thorough anatomy lesson.
It's a great read for anyone who wants to change the way they approach thinking about their own pleasure.

Beautiful Star by Yukio Mishima

Beautiful Star's Osugi family are all from different planets. The dad is from Mars, the mom is from Jupiter, the son is from Mercury, and the daughter hails from Venus.
Instead of letting this knowledge tear them apart, the family forms a deep bond that convinces them to seek out others who may be like them. Also, it's also up to them to end a very dangerous nuclear war that could destroy all of humanity.

The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler

Even before I truly knew what this Dua Lipa book club pickwas about, I understood that it had a huge cultural and societal impact.
Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues birthed a global movement aiming to stop the rampant violence against the female gender. It's a take on everything women fear, rage, and fantasize about in a refreshingly honest way. I like to think of it as a call-to-arms for women to believe we are worthy of feeling safe and free in the bodies we inhabit.

Fates and Furiesby Lauren Groff

Fates and Furies peels back the layers on a marriage spanning over two decades. Lotto and Mathilde start off being the picture-perfect couple that everyone admires, but there's an undercurrent of difficulty that those on the outside haven't been able to see.

Contrary to popular belief, marriages aren't ever one-sided because it consists of two people who are likely from different backgrounds, and have differing perspectives. Lauren Groff does an amazing job at explaining that even the longest marriages have their secrets.

This book makes for a perfect read because it shows how often we say things like, "That couple is #relationshipgoals," without truly knowing what happens behind closed doors.

There are a lot of celebrity couples we love (Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce! Katy Perry & Orlando Bloom!), but if you ask me, nobody handles having a relationship in the spotlight like Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. This hilarious duo protects their kids, but they're also always down for a good time.

The couple first met in 2010 while filming Green Lantern, which has quickly become regarded as Ryan Reynolds' worst movie (the actor said he'd "genuinely rather watch just a f—ing 24-hour marathon of PAW Patrol). But, in addition to the fact I didn't think the movie was all that bad, it also gave the world the gift of Ryan & Blake's relationship. The couple quickly fell in love, tying the knot in 2010. Since then, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have had four children (James, Inez, Betty, and Olin), launched a variety of brands like Betty Buzz, Aviation Gin, and Blake Brown Beauty, and given Hollywood some of its most iconic movies — all while supporting and praising one another. Keep reading for their full relationship timeline.

"About a year after Green Lantern had come and gone and we were both single, we went on a double date — she was on a date with another guy, and I was on a date with another girl — and it was like the most awkward date for the respective parties because we were just like fireworks coming across."

The moment we met Brooke Davis (played by Sophia Bush) in the second episode of One Tree Hill, I knew I'd love her. I didn't realize, however, that she'd become one of my favorite TV show characters of all time. The CW series, which ran from 2003-2012, turns 21 on September 23, and it's widely regarded as one of the best teen dramas. In addition to centering relationships, the angst of coming of age, and Carolina Basketball, One Tree Hill stands apart because of how poetic its story is. Haley, Lucas, Peyton, Brooke, and Nathan all wrestle with growing up in a relatable and emotional way. And Brooke far and above becomes the best part of the show as she evolves from stereotypical mean girl to fashion designer to mom and business owner.

Warner Bros. Television/The CW

She's complicated, sassy, and, unlike a lot of other female characters, far from one-dimensional. At the beginning of the series she intentionally makes questionable decisions — like lying about being pregnant with Lucas' baby in season 1 or making fun of the fact Peyton had two dead moms by season 3 (I still can't believe this, TBH). But as Brooke matures, she finds she finds strength in her vulnerability. And before she helped land her attacker Xavier in prison, became a mother, and reopened Karen's Café, a single moment solidifies Brooke as THE One Tree Hill character for me: the photo project.

Warner Bros. Television/The CW

In season 4, episode 13, "Pictures of You," the students at Tree Hill High are paired up for a photo project to help them get to know each another better. Brooke gets paired up with Chase (Stephen Colletti), and after admitting she lied about a test because she worried she wasn't good enough for him, Brooke reveals just how inadequate she feels. This is such a shocking conversation to watch as a viewer because at first glance, Brooke has it all: she's popular, she's wealthy, and she's gorgeous. But knowing someone so seemingly invincible feels that way made me feel seen.

Chase ends up taking Brooke's yearbook photo with "not smart enough," "not talented enough," "not pretty enough," and other insecurities written across the projector. And even though these horrible thoughts literally cover Brooke's skin (which is exactly how my insecurities feel sometimes — obvious and visible), she looks into the camera with the tiniest smile.

Warner Bros. Television/The CW

"That scene was so personal to me," Sophia Bush revealed to Buzzfeed. "That was something that I had opened up to our writers about in my own life. I remember when I read that script, I felt so ashamed. I felt so exposed reading it on the page. I remember feeling so embarrassed and being like, 'Oh my god, I was having a conversation about motivation for characters, and they're using it. I don't know if this is okay.' It was my first lesson that if you can be courageous enough to open the thing that you're most afraid of, people won't back away from you; they'll lean toward you and say, 'Wow, you, too?' To create that for our audience and to begin to learn that for myself as a young woman was really a profound experience. That was a big one."

Warner Bros. Television/The CW

This moment solidifies Brooke as a character we all love simply because it's so relatable. And seeing how Brooke reclaims her worth based on the fact that she's enough on her own, that her value doesn't depend on how much she has to offer, makes me feel more empowered every time I watch it.

"People are gonna label you," Chase says in a voiceover of the scene. "It's how you overcome those labels, that's what matters." And I think that's what One Tree Hill — and Brooke Davis — is all about.

Warner Bros. Television/The CW

Blake Lively is as multifaceted as they come. She's an actress who has starred in titles like Gossip Girl, A Simple Favor, and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (plus It Ends With Us). She's the founder of Betty Buzz, which has a variety of non-alcoholic mixers that taste just as good on their own as they do with liquor. And, she's also a mom. Lively has been outspoken about protecting her children from the paparazzi, making rare public appearances with them for events like her husband Ryan Reynolds' Hollywood Walk Of Fame Ceremonyandcozy date nights.

When Lively and Reynolds seemingly announced the birth of their fourth child last year, we melted. Here's everything you need to know about Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively's kids.

What is the name of Blake Lively's 4th baby?

Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds' fourth baby is named Olin, which he revealed during the July 22 premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine!

Before Ryan chose to reveal the name, he appeared on the Today show and made a cheeky joke about it after the hosts urged him to spill the beans. He said, "We always wait for Taylor to tell us what the child's name will be. We'll say this: we're still waiting."

What gender is Ryan and Blake's fourth child?

Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images

On July 26, Ryan Reynolds confirmed that he and Blake Lively's fourth baby, born in February 2023, is a boy in an Instagram video supporting mental health charity Walking 4 Hope. Speaking with founder John Bell, who struggled with suicidal ideation after the 2020 loss of his son Jake, Reynolds says, “I want to share with you that I, too, have a son...Boy, John, if I love him one-tenth as much as you love Jake, I’ll feel like I’ve done a pretty d—mn good job.”

Considering how adorable James, Inez, and Betty are, I can only imagine how cute Blake Lively's son is!

How many children do Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have?

Blake Lively posted a pic on Super Bowl Sunday in 2023 showing what appears to be a post-baby body with the caption "Been busy."

Lively confirmed her fourth pregnancy in September 2022 when she arrived at her Forbes event in NYC cradling a baby bump and by posting her own personal photos on Instagramhoping that "the 11 guys waiting outside [her] home for a 🦄 sighting will leave [her] alone."

How old was Blake Lively when she had her first child?

Mike Coppola/Getty Images for Michael Kors

Blake Lively was 27 when she gave birth to her first daughter, James, in December of 2014.

Why did Blake Lively name her daughter James?

Matt Winkelmeyer/Getty Images

The couple decided to name their daughter James after Reynolds' late father. While the name connects both James and Reynolds to his father, it also gives Lively the chance to bond with her daughter over having historically male names. "I liked having a boy's name," Lively said on Good Morning Americain 2015. "I thought I'd pass it on."

Their third daughter Betty's name is a tribute to Lively's late father. We didn't know the name of the couple's third baby until Taylor Swift used all three names in her 2020 album folklore. Swift also used James' voice at the beginning of her 2017 track "Gorgeous"! Does that mean we'll hear one of Ryan Reynolds' children in Reputation (Taylor's Version)? I hope so!

What has Ryan Reynolds said about raising their kids?

Amy Sussman/Getty Images

In a conversation with Hugh Jackman ahead of Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds opened up about how his family has helped his anxiety. "I think it makes it better because your focus is less on yourself and more on your kids," he says (via People). "I love that I've had anxiety because when I see my kids experiencing some of that, which is probably genetic, I know how to address it in a way that is compassionate, that actually allows them to feel seen. I know that I can't just fix it. And I can communicate all that stuff to them and with them. I'm always grateful for it."

Per People, Ryan Reynolds has also made it clear he and Blake are wholly invested in the kids' daily lives. The doting husband and father enjoys the moments of "walking them to school and walking them back" as it deepens their bond. More than anything, Ryan and Blake's main goal is to make sure they teach their kids how to be introspective with Ryan saying "the thing we sort of hang our hat on the most is self-awareness with our kids."

Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images

However, that doesn't mean Blake and Ryan don't absolutely love being parents. "We're very excited [and] we wouldn't do this four times if we didn't love it," he says in an interview with CNBC's Power Lunch. "Everybody's doing great. Everybody's actually doing fantastic. I think if we hadn't figured it out by now, I think we'd be in deep, deep trouble."

"It's a zoo over here," he jokes. "This is my office here, this is where I'll probably — to be honest, I'll probably spend the rest of my life in here."

We love how much energy Ryan and Blake are pouring into their kids. It's always beautiful when parents are able to be present with their kids and teach them how to be present with themselves. Ryan Reynolds has also mentioned how having daughters "has been such a ride." Since he comes from a family of all boys, having daughters is something that was beyond his wildest dreams! “I love being a girl dad,” Ryan tells Access in 2020. “I have three daughters, which I never in a million years would imagine.”

He mentioned his newest child in June of 2023, when he announced his new series Bedtime Stories. "The idea for a show made to help everyone fall asleep was born the same day as my fourth child," he says on Instagram.

Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images

The Deadpool actor also recently offered some parenting advice on Amanda Hirsch’s hit podcastNot Skinny But Not Fat. "Embrace the chaos,” he tells Hirsch. "[Blake] always says, ‘They're all under our roof right now. The whole family's under our roof right now. We have them all.’ And that is a fleeting thing. Not an infinite resource, you know?”

While Reynolds understands firsthand how overwhelming parenting can feel, he also doesn't wish away this time with four young kids: “Just say, ‘Think about what you would give in 40 years or 30 years to come back and enjoy this one moment.’"

How do Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively prioritize their kids?

Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images for Michael Kors

Blake Lively recently joined an episode of her Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants' costar Amber Tamblyn's Further Adoand revealed the one unbreakable rule she made with Ryan Reynolds.

“When Ryan and I got together, we made a rule not to work at the same time,” she says. “So that we could always prioritize our personal life...That takes working really hard when we're not. Just like financial planning and sustaining that; it takes balance.”

I love that Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are serious about their family life, and that they have identified what works for them and are sticking with it.

How has motherhood affected Blake Lively?

Dimitrios Kambouris/Staff/Getty Images Entertainment via Getty Images;Art by Claire Shadomy/B+C

Blake Lively opened up about how Ryan Reynolds and she monitor screen safety for their kids, which is definitely something top-of-mind in 2024. “This is not an ad. I get nothing out of this. I just love @tappityapp,” she said of the STEM-focused educational app. “It’s engaging, informative, fun and they care about safety."

She also jokes that she's learning new things right along with her kids! But, no matter how educational or fun an app is, Blake Lively also emphasizes the importance of engaging with her kids' devices: "I’m always triple checking any kids app constantly for safety because that’s my responsibility not an app’s, but I do LOVE this one.”

Despite its fun and funny moments, the actress has admitted being a mom is hard, but she did it with her signature dry sense of humor. “BettyBooze at your service," she wrote in an Instagram Story announcing the new brand. "These are recipes I’ve been making for loved ones for years. But I have 4 kids now. And I’m tired. So here they are. In a can."

Emma McIntyre/Getty Images for American Cinematheque

However, Blake Lively absolutely loves motherhood, and says in a 2022 interview with Forbes that having children has made her feel more comfortable in her own skin. "Once I had children, that just became even more profound because my time was even more precious, but also I think having children for me made me feel so much more in my skin," she says. "I never felt more myself or at ease in my own body or more confident — not to say that there aren't a bevy of insecurities coming at me a million times a day, but I just feel incredibly settled."

Speaking with People in 2021, Lively also explains how important it is that her children see her accomplish things outside the home. "I want to be as present of a mother as humanly possible and I want them to feel my presence, but I also think the best way to be the best mother is to show them that you can have a life and have a passion and have an identity outside of just being a mother," Lively says.

While she acknowledges that motherhood is all-encompassing, and it looks different for everyone, she knows that having your own identity is very important. "Teaching them that they can maintain themselves and that everything is possible [is crucial]," she adds.

Lively gave birth to Betty in 2019 and Olin in February of 2023.

Is Taylor Swift friends with Blake Lively's kids?

Mike Coppola/Getty Images

Yes, Taylor Swift loves Blake Lively's kids! At the Philadelphia show of the Eras Tour, in which Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively attended, Taylor said hello from the stage.

One funny detail about Ryan Reynolds' kids that I love is when he mentioned the girls finally realized Taylor Swift was a popstar. "I think what's most exciting for them is that for the longest time they just thought Taylor's just like an aunt, like a friend of Mommy and Daddy that's very, very close, almost family," he tellsThe Jess Cagle Show. "And then they went to a concert one day and were like, 'Ohhhhh, this isn't a hobby.'"

For Super Bowl Sunday in 2024, Blake Lively joined Taylor Swift to support beau (and KC Chiefs tight end) Travis Kelce. "Last week I left my kids for the first time ever," she says on Instagram. "I took pictures upside down and had no clue. I treated a friendship bracelet like a Flat Stanley for my husband like I didn’t realize it wasn’t ‘07. I borrowed more jewelry than the skeleton in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. And I went clubbing. Now I know what my episode of TheTwilight Zone would look like."

Do Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively's kids have nannies?

Jamie McCarthy / Staff

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds' children don't have a nanny. "I feel like I could sometimes have a bit of a short fuse, but there's just been this weirdly endless supply of patience," Ryan told GQ in 2015. "I have no problem waking up five times in the middle of the night and changing diapers, and as exhausted as you get, I have this stupid grin on my face all the time."

Once fall hits, all I want to do is cozy up in a blanket and settle into my final form: couch potato. But nevertheless, life goes on, and I have meetings, dinners, and dates to attend. My favorite pieces to pull from my closet for this time of year are sweater dresses, hands-down, because they literally feel like I'm wearing a blanket (but I still look put-together). From thick knits to light n' breezy materials, Amazon has a ton of sweater dresses worthy of your cozy seasonal wardrobe. Scroll on for 10 styles I will absolutely be stocking up on to look and feel my best!

Amazon

Anrabess Long Sleeve Oversized Cable Knit Sweater Dress

Anything with a chunky cable knit is a perfect fit for fall and winter. Case in point is this adorably comfy sweater dress that features long sleeves and the ideal mini length to pair with tall boots!

Amazon

Saodimallsu V-Neck Long Sleeve Sweater Dress

This is a totally work-ready sweater dress. The contrasting trim, collar, and buttons polish up the piece a bit, and since it's meant to be form-fitting, it hugs your figure in the most flattering way. It also comes in 5 more colors to suit your personal style!

Amazon

Zesica Waffle Knitted Sweater Dress

The waffle knit texture on this sweater dress feels so comfy, you'll want to wear it all season long. As opposed to other cozy sweater dresses, this pick also has a playful tie-waist to cinch you in and add some flair to your 'fit.

Amazon

Oyoangle V-Neck Sleeveless Knitted Short Sweater Dress

This sleeveless sweater dress is the perfect contender for fall and winter layering. It'll work well over a light turtleneck or button-down blouse, especially if you need more coverage amidst the chilly weather. The front side features two adorable pockets for stowing away small essentials, too!

Amazon

Anrabess Long Sleeve Tie Waist Sweater Dress

This chocolate brown color is gonna get me every time! It's a great seasonal hue to sport during the fall and winter months, plus, it wears well with everything. I'd pair this pick with some black riding boots and an oversized denim jacket for an easy (and very comfortable) outfit formula.

Amazon

Lillusory Mock Turtleneck Sweater Dress

The puff sleeves and turtleneck on this thick-knit sweater dress will come in handy on cold days. For even more coverage (while still looking cute), layer this style over some tights or thermal leggings and slip into your fave loafers or boots. Easy peasy!

Amazon

Wiholl Long Sleeve Midi Dress

This sweater dress wears a little lighter since the material is thinner than most, but that just sets you up for total comfort and freedom of movement as you go about your day. The leg slit is super timeless and lets your look air out a bit. You can easily style this item up or down depending on the occasion!

Amazon

Zesica Backless Pullover Sweater Dress

Oh, elegance! I love the off-the-shoulder look with this sweater dress. It definitely feels like the perfect contender for a fall date night. This design has a wrap dress effect that's polished off with a cute tie waist that you can use to shape your look even more. Pair it with a pair of tall boots, and you're set!

Amazon

LookbookStore Square Neck Sweater Dress

This is a great basic sweater dress, but it still holds some flair to set your look apart, thanks to the leg slit and femme square neckline. The sleeves are slightly flared, too, adding a dash of playfulness! This basic black color is a must if you're building out your capsule wardrobe since it's easily wearable with a whole array of colors.

Amazon

Saodimallsu Striped Sweater Dress

Polo stripes are everything, and this sweater dress is covered in 'em. The plunging v-neck and button-down details on this pick make it feel more formal, and you could even wear it as a longline cardigan if you choose to leave the buttons undone. You can also shop 5 more cute colorways if this red and white combo isn't your exact style.
