How to Experience the Luck of the Irish in Dublin

The Irish are lucky for many reasons, though the Republic of Ireland’s lively and enchanting capital city is undoubtedly a prime example of their good fortune. One visit to Dublin will assure you that this city is the proverbial pot of gold at the end of your travels — across Europe and beyond. We’ve already covered Eastern Europe’s best-kept secret, so now we’re heading across the continent to the island of pints and castles, 12th-century pubs, and 18th-century gaols.

The cobblestone streets of this European capital echo with hundreds of years of storytellers: Read the country’s poetry and prose before your trip to fully appreciate Dublin’s culture and history. We recommend Dubliners by James Joyce (a classic you may have read in school) or The Last September by Elizabeth Bowen (her stifled female protagonists are as relevant today as they were in the 1920s). But first, read on for your guide to Dublin and plan your next trip to the Emerald Isle to discover what prompted Joyce to declare, “When I die Dublin will be written in my heart.”

Where to Stay

Whether you want to stay in a castle or a hostel, there are infinite places to stay in Dublin. We’re partial to Buswells Hotel, situated right in the heart of Dublin, and The Shelbourne Dublin, a high-end hotel on St. Stephen’s Green that features the newly opened 1824 Bar. Not only does this cocktail bar boast an extensive Champagne and whiskey menu, but it also has bookshelves lined with works and quotes from Irish literary heroes such as Samuel Beckett and Oscar Wilde.

If you’re interested in nightlife, consider the Temple Bar Hotel (situated in the eponymous neighborhood famous for its pubs and bars) or the Fitzsimons Hotel (which has its own rooftop garden and nightclub). The Westin Dublin (pictured above), located at College Green, is another reliable option. Travelers looking to save money on housing should consult HostelWorld for locations in Dublin and compare options with homes listed on Airbnb.

For more regal accommodations, look into the Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel, located in the Dublin suburb of Killiney, or Kilkea Castle, an hour southwest of the city in County Kildare. Built in the late 12th century, Kilkea is one of the oldest habitable castles in Ireland, so would-be travelers shouldn’t be afraid to share their room with a smattering of ghosts — there’s even an abandoned graveyard on the estate. Kilkea also offers entertainment for the living as well, including falconry, horseback riding, archery, and golf. Step back in time and live like a queen (or at least a lady) for the weekend.

What to Do

Wake up early to catch a bus or train to the Baily Lighthouse in Howth for an unforgettable panoramic view of the cliff and the lighthouse at sunrise. Not that you would be able to forget, anyway, since the moment will undoubtedly be preserved forever on your Instagram feed. The picturesque lighthouse rivals Great Point on Nantucket (only with more dramatic terrain) and is well worth the 80+ minutes on public transport from Dublin. Another equally Instagram-worthy (and exceedingly educational) activity is a tour of Dublin Castle. Built in 1204, the castle was the seat of British rule in Ireland until the Irish War of Independence ended in 1922 with the creation of the Irish Free State. Ask to have a photo taken of yourself in front of the castle’s gorgeous, color-block exterior, painted in shades of blue, red, green and yellow.

Visit Trinity College (which looks a bit like Hogwarts, for you Harry Potter fanatics), and sign up for its Book of Kells Tour to learn more about the world’s most famous medieval manuscript. This ninth-century tome is known as Ireland’s greatest cultural treasure, though we’d add the historic Abbey Theatre (the old stomping grounds of poet W.B. Yeats) to the list as well. Have a cup of tea at Bewley’s, established in 1840, before hitting up the shops on Grafton Street. The Irish are renowned storytellers, and you’ll experience this firsthand listening to the craic (or “crack,” an Irish term for witty gossip and chatter) on the streets of Dublin. There’s even a walking tour focused exclusively on the subject: the Dublin Craic Tour.

Visit some of Dublin’s many art galleriesIMMA (the Irish Museum of Modern Art) is especially worth a visit, as is the National Gallery of Ireland, located in the heart of Georgian Dublin — or just enjoy the street art along the city sidewalks. Other museums to check out include the Kilmainham Gaol Museum (about the history of Irish independence and political prisoners) and the Irish Whisky Museum (interactive, very fun).

Speaking of interactive, did you really visit Dublin if you didn’t stop by the Guinness Factory for a tour and a pint? Enjoy the panoramic views from the top-floor bar as you enjoy a tour-finale pint included with the entrance fee. Warning: One glass can feel as hearty as Thanksgiving dinner, so consider eating a light lunch beforehand.

Head out to Phoenix Park for a curated glimpse of some of the country’s greenery, or for the real thing book a full-day guided tour from Dublin to Glendalough and Wicklow with Wild Wicklow Tours. (This excursion was ranked as the #1 experience in Ireland and #10 in the world by TripAdvisor earlier this year.) You can also experience Ireland’s legendarily lush countryside by renting a car for day trips outside the city, where you’ll witness greenery of folkloric proportions (we’re referring to shamrocks and leprechauns, of course). Stop in any nondescript pub in any small village along the way for a pint of Guinness — yes, it does taste different there.

Where to Eat & Drink

Head to the River Liffey to pay a visit to landmark Dublin institution The Winding Stair. This quintessentially Irish restaurant is named after a Yeats poem and located above (you guessed it) a bookstore. (We told you the Irish love their writers.) The aptly named Meet Me in the Morning is a go-to spot for brunch. We highly recommend Pichet for dinner: This restaurant and cocktail bar has delicious food and an even more excellent wine list.

Order “blaa” (sandwiches on rolls ) for lunch at the Irish kitchen Hatch & Sons. This cute cafe has two locations, in The Little Museum of Dublin and Dublin City Gallery, so you can educate yourself before or after your meal. Head to the Gallagher’s Boxty House for their signature boxty (imagine potato crepes stuffed with meat). Though located in a touristy area, the tagline makes the crowds worth it: “The Humble Spud Made Beautiful.”

Though it may be popular with tourists, the Temple Bar neighborhood remains a cultural center in Dublin and is definitely worth a visit for any traveler. You’ll want to start off at The Temple Bar (pictured above), established in 1840. Most Dubliners have a bar or pub that they think has the best pint of Guinness in the world, so we suggest asking someone at the bar their opinion on pubs to visit, and then taking them up on their recommendations (all night long, if possible).

For a daytime drinking scene that’s more than a little reminiscent of Brooklyn, enjoy the DJ sets, exhibitions, cocktails, and street food at The Bernard Shaw. Head to L. Mulligan Grocer for fresh Irish produce and an impressive selection of whiskeys: The gastropub is located in Stoneybatter, an area of Dublin that remains less touristy than Temple Bar but where plenty of people still go out.

The pubs here are endless, so the game ends only when you fall asleep. We’re partial to Grogan’s Castle Lounge (one of the best pubs in Dublin for people-watching), The Brazen Head (Ireland’s oldest pub, established 1198) and Mulligan’s (an 18th-century pub with a lively crowd, known as “the home of the pint”). Irish pubs may now be popular all over the United States, but trust us when we say: They’re even better in Dublin. Again, it’s just the luck of the Irish.

I truly believe that there are two types of people in this world: ones who like nice flights, and ones who like nice hotels. I, for one, am the latter of the two. I will fly the absolutely cheapest, tiniest airline you could possibly imagine....but I love a good hotel. And honestly, it works out because I ultimately save money on the flight and put it towards my lodging. In doing this, I've stayed at quite a few fun hotels over the years, from international destinations to right in my hometown of LA. These are worldwide, some of the best hotels out there that you should definitely add to your travel wishlist too. These 10 nice hotels will make you feel like you're living in a movie, so keep reading to see all the places that will make you wanna book a flightASAP!

Chateau de la Chèvre d'Or

Chateau de la Chèvre d'Or in Eze, France

Tucked away in a small medieval town in the South of France called Eze is the dreamy 5-star hotel, Chateau de la Chèvre d'Or. This hotel truly makes you feel like you're living in the movie The Bucket List — maybe because it was also featured in the film, but still. The picturesque views of the ocean, stunning amenities like the three cliffside pools, and the sprawling gardens all make for the perfect hotel and the reason why it's my number one nice hotel I've ever stayed in.

Chateau de la Chèvre d'Or is also one of the cheaper 5-star hotels I've stayed in, with rooms sometimes costing as low as $450 a night in the off-season. While this is still expensive, it's surprising when you see all that the property has to offer alongside the spectacular views and prime location.

Villa d'Este

Villa d'Este in Lake Como, Italy

Lake Como was another favorite destination of mine, and while you can't go wrong with any of the hotels on the lake, Villa d'Este was an favorite of mine. The service is simply unmatched, along with the to-die-for views of the water. Every day, breakfast is served right out on the patio with this stunning, serene view. The grounds are hundreds of years old, with acres of gardens across the property, so you truly can never be bored. The whole hotel just exudes old fashioned luxury, and it almost makes you feel like you have been transported to another time.

While Chateau de la Chèvre d'Or is my top choice, I have to say that Villa d'Este has the best service out of all the hotels I've stayed at — they truly treat you like royalty! Plus, there's a floating pool on the lake...so you really can't say no to that, right?!

Rosewood Miramar

Rosewood Miramar in Santa Barbara, CA

You will NOT want to miss out on staying here! The Rosewood Miramar is like stepping straight into a Nancy Meyers movie. It's a beautiful hotel right on the beach with some of the prettiest decor and interiors that you'll want to replicate in your own home (trust me, I've tried). The amenities include a pool right by the beach, plus top-notch service — a must for a nice hotel! I love this ocean-side stay for a relaxing, coastal vacay!

The Savoy

The Savoy in London, England

I particularly love The Savoy in London for their incredible spa. They offer a lot of fantastic deals where you can get a room, breakfast, and two spa treatments with your booking! I'd highly recommend this hotel for their stunning decor and luxury spa! I'm sure it will be a much-needed break for some solid R&R to enjoy while vacationing to London.

Waldorf Astoria Trianon Palace

Waldorf Astoria Trianon Palace in Versailles, France

Walking through the gates of Waldorf Astoria Trianon Palacewas like walking through Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. They have acres of gardens covered in flowers with the background being their massive chateau-style hotel. It was truly a remarkable stay! I adored eating breakfast in the garden room, and walking out to explore the grounds every morning. Plus, if you walk right out of the hotel gate, you'll waltz straight into the Palace of Versailles itself. So, it's proximity to all the tourist attractions nearby are super ideal! I loved the spa and amenities here, as well as looking out the large windows of our hotel room to see people riding horses right outside! This is a stunning stay that makes you feel like you're royalty in the countryside of your centuries-old chateau.

Hotel du Cap Eden-Roc

Hotel du Cap Eden-Roc in Antibes, France

Do you remember when Sofia Richie-Grainge broke the internet with her incredibly luxe wedding? Well, this was exactly where it all went down — the Hotel du Cap Eden-Roc!I adore this hotel for so many reasons: the service is amazing, the rooms are to die for, the pool is iconic, and the location is prime! It's located in the adorable town of Antibes, France where there's a cute village filled with restaurants, shopping, and lots of action! There is no shortage of things to do when you're at this hotel. An added bonus is that they have the Dior spa located at the hotel, so make sure to stop in for a Dior facial! ;)

Passalacqua

Passalacqua in Lake Como, Italy

This is another Lake Como hotel, but I had to add Passalacqua because it was recently named the #1 Hotel of the Year by The World's 50 Best! What I love about this hotel is the massive array of experiences they offer! To name a short few: private cinema screenings under the stars with canopy chairs, exquisite, Michelin-level fine dining, cooking classes, tennis lessons, and so many more! That's not even scratching the surface of this hotel. It's truly a remarkable place and a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so if you get the chance to stay here, definitely do it!

Waldorf Astoria Rome Cavalieri

Waldorf Astoria Rome Cavalieri in Rome, Italy

Perched right on the hill in Rome is this massive — and incredibly beautiful — 5-star hotel, Rome Cavalieri. The property truly speaks to the beauty of Italian architecture, design, and art. I mean, the art and decor adorning the walls is centuries old, and it seems like you're sitting right in the middle of a museum. The rooms have a gorgeous balcony that look out over the whole city of Rome, as well as the hotel's sprawling green garden. I stayed here a couple of years ago, and I still dream of their free massive buffet breakfast filled with the most divine pastries, meats, and cheeses. I love this hotel!

The Ritz Paris

The Ritz Paris in Paris, France

If you're like me, you've dreamed of staying at The Ritz Paris at least once in your life. It's a legendary, iconic hotel, with the famous Bar Hemingway located inside. Words can't describe how beautiful this hotel is as soon as you step through the doors. Everything from the rooms, to the location, down to the stunning (and large) lobby is everything you'd expect from The Ritz. It's another one of those once-in-a-lifetime stays that you definitely should try and go to! As Hemingway once said, "When I dream of afterlife in heaven, the action always takes place in the Paris Ritz."Couldn't have put it better myself, Ernest!

Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills

Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills in Beverly Hills, California

I've stayed at the Waldorf Beverly Hills many times (I'm a Hilton member so I often get to stay for free — thank you points!), and I will never get tired of it. The staff are some of the nicest people and truly go out of their way to help you with anything you need. This hotel also has one of my favorite amenities: the house car. At this hotel, they have a house car that will, for free, drop you anywhere within 10 minutes that you need to be. For example, one day I wanted to get bagel on Rodeo, so I thought I'd take the house car not knowing what kind it was...up pulled a blue phantom Rolls Royce with constellation ceilings and plush carpet. Everyone thought I was famous because who gets dropped off at a bagel shop in a Rolls Royce?! Well, I did — but only because it was free! So if that doesn't convince you to stay here then I don't know what will!

Questions About Your Daily Routine

Please don't throw eggs at us! We know you don't want to feel governed by a schedule like you're in grade school, but there are benefits to having something to guide you daily. According to Northwestern Medicine, you can "reduce stress" and even "get better rest" by having a routine.

If you've been promising yourself to improve in these areas, here are 5 questions to ask yourself:

  • How many of hours of sleep do I typically get per night?
  • What distractions can I eliminate before bed so I'm not groggy in the morning? (i.e., no more binge watching my favorite TV shows or scrolling mindlessly on TikTok)?
  • Do I have a morning routine or do I rush through taking a shower, brushing my teeth, and eating breakfast?
  • How do I usually feel when I get to work?
  • Am I okay with setting a reminder for myself to take a break during the work day so I can stretch my legs, eat lunch, or go for a quick walk?

Questions About Your Self-Care

Making time for your self-care is a part of your daily routine, but we want to dig deeper by sharing questions that'll help you reflect on how you treat yourself.

  • How do I want to feel about myself in 2025?
  • Did I have moments I looked in the mirror and didn't like the way my skin or body looked this year?
  • Have I been prioritizing my mental health?
  • Did I make space for exercising (i.e. walking, yoga, running, etc.)?
  • Did I create healthy boundaries with family, friends, or someone I'm dating?

Questions About Your Career

We almost said, "Here comes the fun part," but that would be unfair for people who consider other areas of their lives more important to chasing a career. If you are focused on pursuing something you're passionate about or simply want to earn a new promotion, here's what you can ask yourself:

  • What are my biggest career accomplishments this year?
  • What skills do I need to sharpen that align with the position I want?
  • How do I respond to constructive criticism?
  • What is my usual response to change or tight deadlines?
  • Do I ask for help when I don't understand a project or concept?

Questions About Your Home

Your home is anywhere that you live even if you're renting or living with your parents for the time being.

  • How did the energy in my home feel?
  • Did I do anything to make it feel like me?
  • How can I create a relaxing environment in my room that promotes rest and relaxation?
  • Do I want to have a certain aesthetic for my living room, office, etc.?
  • What does having a clean and organized home mean to me?

Questions About Your Relationships

Have you been making excuses for toxic friends or ignoring red flags? If it's okay, we're going to sit by you and gently suggest it's time for a change. The kind of life you want to live can't be weighed down by old habits of yours or some of the people you've been spending time with, especially if you've been feeling uncomfortable.

  • What kind of friendships do I want to have in 2025?
  • Do I have a reliable support system?
  • What did I love about my romantic relationship this year?
  • Are there certain conversations I need to have with family members, friends, or my partner that I've been avoiding?

The '90s were a great time, according to millennials. It was a time of rollerblading, listening to cassette players, playing Super Mario Bros. on Nintendos, having birthday parties at Chuck E. Cheese, and more. Besides this and other pop culture moments that went viral before social media existed, the '90s gave us classic stores we used to frequent as kids.

Despite meeting their demise as the Y2K age took over, we'll never forget the fun memories (and maximalist vibes) these stores gave us!

Take a walk down memory lane by revisiting our favorite '90s stores that will take you back in time (and make you feel old):

1. Party City

Our hearts are hurting because we don't understand why one of the most popular decor stores is closing. The brand was apparently facing "financial challenges," according to it's CEO Barry Litwin (via CNN). There were other issues behind the scenes, but everything trickled down to money, or a lack thereof.

It's so shocking because some of us just picked up a few holiday items from Party City this month! It was one of the stores that seemed to have everything we needed before Amazon became the mega wholesaler that it is today.

I guess this means we should've cherished Party City a little more because it's officially gone.

2. Blockbuster

Long before streaming platforms like Netflix and Peacock existed, people used to spend Friday nights looking at rows of VHS movies to rent. If you were lucky, your parents would stop by Blockbuster before picking up pizza for dinner. It was the ultimate '90s treat…until it wasn’t.

When we want to remember what it felt like visiting Blockbuster, we fast forward to that one scene in I Am Legend where Dr. Robert Neville is going to 'rent' movies. It's a little cringe now that we think about it, but it's the closet memory we have of spending at least 30 minutes picking out the VHS or DVD to watch.

3. Circuit City

Raise your hand if you remember getting your first CD player or computer from Circuit City. The name alone conjures fun memories of running up and down the aisles pretending we could afford all the fun electronics. We watched desktop computers slowly morph into laptops, which seemed like an exciting time. Also, some of us watched our parents lament the cost of the required Texas Instrument calculators we needed for math class.

Although Circuit City isn't around like it used to be, we'll never forget watching the world change through its eyes.

4. Virgin Music Store

If you wanted to be a part of the cool crowd, you visited the Virgin music store. We aptly remember the neon sign and memorable displays that beckoned to us. Although we could find some of the same CDs at Circuit City, the store’s design didn’t feel stuffy.

5. Radio Shack

This one’s personal because we stood in lines with our parents when they bought their first cell phones and DVD players. Also, one of our parents may or may not have purchased a very coveted Bratz convertible that played music from Radio Shack.

Even though it wasn’t the biggest store, it gave us a taste of what the future had for us. Little did we know we’d lose this sweet store though.

6. Border's

As much as we love recommending books from Amazon and local bookshops, we miss when Border’s was around. There’s not much to say about this store besides how grown-up we felt when our parents would let us spend time there while they shopped at their favorite stores in the mall.

7. KB Toys

Aside from Toys ‘R’ Us, we also remember when K.B. Toys was popular. Not unlike today, there wasn’t such a thing as having too many toy stores. Sometimes we found things at K.B.s that felt like a treat. The cluttered aisles probably annoyed our parents, but we were always happy when we were allowed to pick something out.

8. Wet Seal

Yes, Wet Seal made the list of stores we loved in the '90s. Unlike Goody’s, it was specifically geared towards pre-teens and teens who wanted to wear the latest fashions. It was one of the the places to discover your style at the time even if it meant leaving piles of clothes for weary store associates to put back (sorry!)

Though we miss it, we hope no one tries to revive it because we’re sure we’d see a few outdated fashion trends.

9. Esprit

This was another store that screamed 'All American Teen Store.' Unlike Wet Seal, the store's layout and clothing were a little more 'sophisticated.' It spoke to teens who are now adults with a sleeker preppy style. It sounds like a reach, but it's not if you think about it. This store could give you logomania, tenniscore, or something that resembled the outfits from Saved By the Bell at the same time.

10. Goody's

Were you really a '90s kid if your mom didn’t drag you to Goody’s? Shockingly enough, we hardly ever complained because it felt like a huge store we could play in. Plus, it had clothes for everyone.

And if there were a sale during BTS season? You could always count on our moms to leave the store with stuffed shopping bags.
