All That Life Can Afford by Emily Everett

Considered one of our most-anticipated new books in April, All That Life Can Afford grapples with one young woman's experience with a fast-paced life filled with classism. It begins with an introduction of Anna and her love for the "beautiful" London. Based on glossy images in Library books, she's convinced that's the place she needs to be. But she's sorely disappointed when she arrives to find a gloomy place that mirrors life in her hometown.

Before long, Anna's swept into the luxurious life of the Wilders as their daughter's tutors and begins experiencing the glitz she thought London would give her. From parties to two attractive pursuits, she's living a life that many dream of...until she begins to struggle under the crushing weight of portraying a "rich and famous" lifestyle" that doesn't match her background.

Beth and Frank seem like they have it all on the surface of their marriage, but that's only because they've been avoiding a huge elephant in the room. Bliss seems like a wonderful place to stay, but Frank's brother commits a crime that stirs up the presence of Gabriel Wolfe. He's the man that used to make Beth's heart beat so long ago, but she swore him off after their romance ended in heartbreak. But now he's back with a son named Leo who feels familiar to Beth.

It doesn't take long for Beth and Gabriel to start interacting, but it comes with painful memories that threaten her marriage with Frank. There'll be a reckoning soon enough, forcing Beth to make peace with her past, present and future.

The Three Lives of Cate Kay by Kate Fagan (New Release)

Cate Kay's a literary genius who's cracked the code of keeping readers engaged in her written work. She's also secured a film franchise that's made fans go wild. But, no one's ever seen Cate Kay or talked to her. She's an enigma on purpose.
You see, 'Cate Kay' and her bestie Amanda made plans to live lavish lives in California. They were so sure everything would work out until something awful happens that forces 'Cate Kay' to leave her real identity behind.

It's not until something forces her to make peace with where she comes from that 'Cate Kay' decides it's time to stop running from who she is.

Reese Witherspoon says, "Have you ever felt like you were living more than one life? That’s exactly what Cate Kay is grappling with in our January pick, The Three Lives of Cate Kay by @KateFagan3. It’s no secret we’re massiveTrader Joe’s fans around here. From discovering the latest and greatest products to snacking on their vast array of sweets, we truly cannot get enough of what TJ’s has to offer. That’s why we’re absolutely thrilled to share tidbits from a brand-new Trader Joe's cookbook (gasp!) that makes enjoying TJ’s finds so much more fun.

The I Love Trader Joe's Cookbook: 15th Anniversary Edition by Cherie Mercer Twohy is a collection of 150 easy recipes using budget-friendly ingredients from our favorite grocer. In the cookbook, Twohy serves up everything from appetizers to main courses – with plenty of keto, low-carb, vegan, and vegetarian options to boot.

Scroll on to discover more on this epic Trader Joe's cookbook, plus two stunning must-try springtime recipes using all your TJ's faves!

Courtesy of Cherie Mercer Twohy

Twohy’s been a TJ’s fan ever since she was little, where she remembers joining her mom on grocery trips to the very first Trader Joe’s store in Pasadena, California. Since then, her love for the Trader Joe’s ‘treasure hunt’ (AKA finding fun, new products to try) hasn’t wavered.

Amazon

In developing The I Love Trader Joe's Cookbook: 15th Anniversary Edition, Twohy said crafting the collection of 150 recipes took years.

“Many were tested and debuted when I had a cooking school in CA,” she said. “Now that I live 3 hours round-trip from the closest Trader Joe's, the drive can take longer than the recipe testing! I don't pay much attention to the clock when honing a recipe, because it's so much fun.”

Trader Joe's

When asked about her favorite items to pick up from TJ’s Twohy was quick to give her best recommendations! Some of her go-to’s include: puff pastry, fennel, the Umami Seasoning Blend, the Corn and Chile Tomato-less Salsa, frozen garlic cubes, creme fraiche, and 10 Minute Farro – and, of course, the entire cheese section.

“If you are a ‘can of this, package of that’ sort of cook, TJ's products are great because they don't use artificial colors, preservatives and all that stuff,” Twohy offered. “Not only [are they] time saving, but good for you, too.”

We were lucky enough to get a peek at some recipes from Twohy’s cookbook: One-Pot Pesto Pasta, Potatoes, and Green Beans and Linguini with Leeks, Shrimp, and Arugula. Scroll on for the deets!

Recipe: One-Pot Pesto Pasta, Potatoes, and Green Beans

Judi Swinks

"The first time I heard of this classic Ligurian dish, I thought it sounded so strange," Twohy writes. "Talk about carb overload! But the flavors, textures, and colors couldn’t be more perfectly paired, and you’ll be converted to the pasta-and-potato combination with the first bite."

Ingredients:

  • 1 large boiling potato (or two small ones)
  • 1/2 pound green beans, trimmed and cut into 3-inch lengths
  • 1/2 (16-ounce) bag thin pasta, such as capellini or spaghetti
  • 1/2 cup Trader Joe’s Pesto alla Genovese (in the refrigerated section)
  • 2 ounces Trader Joe’s Chevre Goat Cheese, softened
  • Salt and pepper

Directions:

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Meanwhile, scrub the potato and cut into 1-inch cubes. Place the potato cubes in the boiling water and cook until barely tender, about 7 minutes. Scoop the potatoes out of the water with a slotted spoon and set aside.
  2. Add the green beans to the same water and cook until just tender, 5 to 6 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and add to the potatoes.
  3. In the same water, cook the pasta until tender. When you drain the pasta, reserve 1⁄2 cup of the cooking water.
  4. In the pasta pot, combine the pesto, goat cheese, and 1⁄4 cup of the water, then add the cooked pasta and toss. Add the potatoes and green beans.
  5. If a saucier consistency is desired, add a bit more of the reserved pasta water. Adjust seasonings to taste with salt and pepper.

Recipe: Linguini with Leeks, Shrimp, and Arugula

Judi Swinks

"I’m a sucker for the pink-and-green look of this dish," Twohy writes. "The leeks, arugula, and shrimp get all tangled up in the long pasta strands, and the grated Parmesan provides a nutty saltiness I just love."

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 leeks, cleaned and thinly sliced
  • 2 cubes frozen crushed garlic
  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth
  • 1/2 pound medium shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 (16-ounce) bag linguini (or another long pasta), cooked and drained
  • A handful of arugula
  • 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • Salt and pepper

Directions:

  1. In a medium sauté pan, heat the olive oil and butter. Sauté the leeks over medium-high heat until tender, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add the garlic and sauté 1 to 2 minutes, until fragrant.
  3. Add the vegetable broth and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes, until the sauce is slightly reduced.
  4. Add the shrimp and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, until pink.
  5. Toss the leek-shrimp mixture with the cooked pasta. Add the arugula and toss.
  6. Add the grated Parmesan, toss, and adjust seasonings to taste with salt and pepper.

I've been floating in the pop cultural abyss because I was clueless about how amazing Netflix's latest comedy Survival of the Thickest is! I just finished Season 2 and it's the funniest and rawest TV series I've watched since being persuaded to binge The White Lotus. But, that's not the show it actually reminds me of.

No, Survival of the Thickest feels like Insecure and And Just Like That had a comedic baby we get to watch grow in real time. There's the familiar supportive friend group, burgeoning careers, and passionate love stories that make you want to call your bestie to complain or scream in excitement.

I genuinely can't stop watching it and can't wait to share why you should be watching it too!

Scroll to learn everything about Survival of the Thickest and why you should watch it this week!

What is 'Survival of the Thickest' about?

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

What happens when you face the worst breakup ever? You cry and find a way to revamp your life, according to Mavis from Survival of the Thickest.

The series revolves around her getting acclimated with being single again while juggling her floundering stylist career. She's got a supportive village, but that doesn't mean she's not prone to making mistakes or facing situations worth cackling about outside of her group chat.

Where does filming take place?

The show is primarily filmed in New York, but parts of Season 2 take place in Italy (via IMDB)!

Who's a part of the cast?

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

Survival of the Thickest has a sprawling cast that features some new and familiar faces. According to Marie Claire, here are the main characters who've appeared in Seasons 1 and 2:

1. Michelle Buteau as Mavis Beaumont

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

Mavis Beaumont may have started off as a heartbroken stylist's assistant in Season 1 of Survival of the Thickest, but she's since gone on to build a name for herself in Season 2. She's also trying to figure out if she's going to stick with her new love interest Luca or go back to her familiar ex Jacque.

2. Taylor Selé as Jacque

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

Jacque is a talented fashion photographer who seems to know what to say to uplift Mavis. Though he starts off saying and doing all the right things, Mavis catches him cheating on her and it leaves her devastated. Interestingly enough, Jacque appears to be remorseful over his huge transgression and tries to prove that he won't make the same mistake again.

3. Tasha Smith as Marley

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

Marley's one of Mavis' no-nonsense besties who applies the same tenacity to her career as a finance executive. Her inspirational quips may come across as 'funny,' but she doesn't lie when she encourages those around her to move in excellence.

4. Tone Bell as Khalil

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

Mavis is surrounded by even more love with the addition of the creative Khalil by her side. He has a softer approach than Marley, but he still wants the best for Mavis and has no problem helping redirect her when she's ready to throw pity parties. If only he could apply the same principles to his own love life...

5. Liza Treyger as Jade

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

If you've ever had a roommate who triggered you at every turn, you probably had someone like Jade in your life. She's the kind of person who seems like she has good intentions, but always finds a way to do something that feels toxic. Whether it's ignoring boundaries or saying the wrong thing at the worst time, Jade's going to do it.

6. Garcelle Beauvais as Natasha Karina

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

Garcelle Beauvais may have left The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, but you can watch her break necks and hurt feelings in Season 2 of Survival of the Thickest. She plays former '90s supermodel Natasha Karina who becomes Mavis' client after an initial period of misunderstandings.

7. Anthony Michael Lopez as Bruce

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

Bruce has been on a mission to be the best assistant to Natasha Karina for as long as he can remember, so he takes it personally when Mavis doesn't seem to understand her new client in the beginning. Though he warms up to her too, his Type-A personality still follows closely behind.

8. Marouane Zotti as Luca

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

Luca's all about Mavis and that's the I like it. Not only is he eye candy, but he's got enough passion stored in his body that makes me feel he's the obvious choice for our love-worn protagonist. However, only time will tell if Mavis thinks she and him are endgame or not.

9. Peppermint as Herself

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

Survival of the Thickest is all about making sure all voices, storylines and identities are championed. Having Peppermint as another close friend of Mavis rounds out her supportive village because she's big on bringing her fun-loving energy wherever she goes. And when Peppermint takes a brief break from performing to get married, Mavis is right there rooting for her.

10. Alecsys Proctor-Turner as Nala

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix

My, how the tables have turned! In Season 2 of Survival of the Thickest, Mavis gets her own assistant in the form of the fashion-obsessed Nala. Though she has moments where her naive nature shines through, she helps provide even more comedic relief and moments of clarity.

How many seasons does 'Survival of the Thickest' have?

Vanessa Clifton/Netflix
