9 Easy Self-Care Routines to Kick-start 2017

For many of us, 2016 was a doozy, but we here at Brit + Co are ready to hit refresh in 2017! Follow our Hit Refresh series through January for new ideas, hacks and skills that will help you achieve (and maintain!) those New Year’s resolutions.

Let’s be honest — 2016 was a notoriously crappy year. But instead of dwelling on the past, we’ve decided to stay positive and dream up some new resolutions for 2017 to keep us healthy and happy (heck, we’ve even designed the cutest resolution tree to keep us motivated!). Along with getting our butts to the weight room and investing smarter, we’ve decided to make self-care a priority in our busy-gal lives. Here are nine easy self-care routines we’re adding to our Google Cal to stay positive and balanced in the new year.

1. Stop splurging on takeout and try meal prepping. Being organized enough to plan out an entire week of meals can seem like a pipe dream for us procrastinators. But a few quick recipes, good containers and some Instagram inspo is all you need to slay your healthy meal game in 2017.

2. Create your own personal safe space. Whether you DIY a blanket fort or create your very own Instagram-worthy book nook (or both!), having a space where you feel completely comfortable is important to help you stay on track with your self-care goals.

3. Designate some tech-free time every damn day. We’ll be the first ones to admit we usually spend our precious free time scrolling Instagram or stalking our exes on FB (we mean… checking FB). But for 10 minutes a day, try taking a break from your tech. Go for a walk, focus on the dishes that’ve been piling up or even start a meditation practice. Whatever you do, don’t tweet about it!

4. Commit to a bedtime. You don’t have to be in grade school to have a bedtime. Committing to going to bed at a certain time every day will help your body recharge properly and give you the rest you need to conquer the day ahead.

5. Do light exercise (and no, it doesn’t have to be yoga). While yoga is the quintessential self-care exercise fad, ANY form of light exercise will boost your endorphins and help you shake off a crummy day. Aim to move your body for 10 minutes a day, from playing with your toddler to dancing to Sia.

6. Keep a gratitude journal. Listing things that you’re grateful for is a great way of keeping yourself positive and grounded. You can buy some pretty cool journals online (like this Kikki K Gratitude Journal [$20], pictured above) or you can DIY one for cheap. Heck, there’s even tons of smartphone apps that’ll help you track your daily gratitude too, like Gratitude Journal ($5) and Thankful For (free).

7. Have a weekly pamper night that you CAN’T reschedule. We all say we’re going to have a weekly me-time sesh, but actually squeezing in time for a date with ourselves is quite difficult. We suggest having a weekly pamper session (candles, face masks and a good read are musts!) and treating it like any other appointment. Put it on the calendar, and don’t cancel on yourself!

8. Schedule time for things YOU love to do. Whether it’s practicing the trombone, playing with planner stickers or hiking a local trail, make room in your weekly schedule for things that YOU like to do. Even if it’s something your BF and BFF don’t enjoy, doing something you love solo will keep you refreshed and energized. Don’t compromise, lady!

9. Hang out with your bestie one-on-one. Hosting a weekly or bi-weekly tea date with your besties is a great way to catch up and unwind. We’re not talking about doing a crazy activity… just sit down, munch a cheeky scone and connect with your BFF without emoji.

If you’re a pasta lover, it’s a great time to be alive. The pasta aisle is filled with alternatives to traditional semolina and whole-wheat varieties, from red lentil penne to edamame spaghetti. In addition to being gluten-free, these pastas are also surprisingly high in protein, making your quick pasta dinner of spaghetti and marinara or vegan mac and cheese a bit more filling (and well-balanced).

Aside from homemade pasta, these bean and legume pastas are pretty much the greatest thing ever. They cook quickly and eliminate the need to prep a separate protein to go with your meal, meaning they’re perfect for 15-minute dinner recipes.

Some are easier to cook than others (and, frankly, a couple of them don’t taste great), so we’re sharing cooking tips for the most popular types of bean pastas, along with simple ideas for dinners that can be on the table in under 30 minutes.

The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

Trader Joe’s

Trader Joe’s Red Lentil Sedanini

Why We Like It: This is, hands-down, the best legume pasta out there. The Trader Joe’s version has quickly become a best-seller, and for good reason. There’s no bean-y flavor, it cooks to a perfect al dente texture, and it pairs well with both creamy and tomato sauces. Red lentil pasta stays firm even after being refrigerated, so you’ll have no more mushy leftovers! Plus, it boasts 13 grams of protein per serving.

Cooking Tip: Use this one for your baked pasta dishes, like baked ziti. On busy nights, simply toss with jarred sauce and Parmesan cheese. (If you have a few extra minutes, sauté fresh garlic in a bit of olive oil, along with oregano, fennel seeds, and crushed red pepper to make your store-bought sauce feel fancier.)

Pair It With: Your favorite pasta sauce. The short pasta can handle chunky sauces, and it soaks up thin and creamy sauces too. There’s no sauce that red lentil pasta can’t handle!

Modern Table Lentil Elbows

Why We Like It: Like the red lentil pasta above, these lentil elbows have a neutral flavor and cook up without much guesswork on the timing. (We’ve tried a few brands.) They’re also the perfect swap in your favorite mac and cheese recipe. Each serving contains a whopping 20 grams of protein.

Cooking Tip: Use a thick or darker sauce to fool picky eaters and mask the slight green color. (Try pesto!)

Pair It With: Toss hot pasta with two cloves of minced garlic, plus plenty of olive oil or butter, and Parmesan for a quick weeknight dinner. Garnish with black pepper and crushed red pepper.

Banza Chickpea Shells

Why We Like It:Chickpea pasta is one of the best protein pastas. This pasta looks and tastes surprisingly like the real deal, with a bit more texture (like a whole-wheat pasta). It cooks quickly and doesn’t fall apart if you forget to set a timer and let it go a couple of extra minutes. (It’s worth buying in bulk!) Also, did you see the 20 grams of protein per serving?

Cooking Tip: Garbanzo bean pasta is tasty chilled too, so use it in your favorite pasta salad recipes. Make a quick lunch by mixing chickpea shells with hummus, chopped olives, and roasted red peppers. Serve over arugula.

Pair It With: Toss hot pasta with tahini (thinned with water and lemon juice), then salt to taste. Serve with steamed broccoli.

Explore Cuisine Green Lentil Lasagne

Why We Like It: You don’t need to parboil these noodles, and they cook up perfectly. They’re a dream come true with 11 grams of protein per serving. (While you can find plenty of no-cook wheat lasagna noodles, the protein content in this variety keeps your Sunday supper from putting you into a carb coma.)

Cooking Tip: Keep a box of these awesome noodles on hand for all your lasagna cravings. Get creative by turning other favorite pasta dishes into layered feasts. Try roasted butternut squash rings with ricotta, gorgonzola, dried cranberries, and sage, then top with a simple tomato or Alfredo sauce (seasoned with rosemary and black pepper).

Pair It With: Your grandmother’s lasagna recipe. No one will know you’ve swapped the noodles!

Explore Cuisine Edamame Spaghetti

Why We Like It: This pasta cooks quickly and is a tasty alternative to rice when stir-fry is on the menu.

Cooking Tip: Set a timer, and don’t walk away. Any thin, long legume pasta like this one needs to be stirred often and not overcooked. If you overcook it, you’ll end up with a congealed blob.

Pair It With: Asian-inspired sauces like sesame ginger or traditional noodle dishes like Korean japchae.

Trader Joe’s Black Bean Rotini

Why We Like It: Unfortunately, we don’t, even with its 14 grams of protein per serving. Every brand we’ve tried needs far longer than the recommended cook time to reach al dente, and we experienced some, um, bean-y side effects every time we ate this one. Since black beans take longer to cook from dried than the other legumes listed here, we suspect that’s why black bean rotini was a fail. Black bean spaghetti did fare slightly better, but it’s still not worth the price.

Cooking Tip: Skip this one, or stock up on the Beano.

San Miguel Allende, Mexico

Even in December, Oahu offers warm temps, with highs around the mid-70s to low 80s°F. Sit with a good read and enjoy Oahu’s famous beaches like Waikiki Beach, Lanikai Beach, and Kailua Beach. Surfing is especially big this time of year, with the North Shore experiencing massive winter swells, perfect for watching pro surfers during events like the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, between November 12 and December 20. For calmer waters, snorkeling in spots like Hanauma Bay is beautiful. Humpback whales migrate to Hawaii’s warm waters in December, and you can often spot them from the shore or on a whale-watching tour. Mel and Jack are finally tying the knot and it's made spring in Virgin River even more beautiful than it already was. But as they get closer to their wedding ceremony, secrets and love triangles (not to mention the usual wedding drama) mean tensions are rising. And when Mel's father's past comes to light, we see a whole new side of Virgin River we've never seen before: the 1970s.

I'm so used to seeing Virgin River in the 21st Century (and all the sweaters, skinny jeans, and loose waves that come with it), and I'm very interested to see what it looks like in the '70s. Bring on the bell bottoms!

The Virgin River Season 5 Ending, Explained

Virgin River season 5 was an emotional one, and the first part, which dropped September 7, 2023, culminated in a major wildfire tearing through town and Mel suffering a miscarriage while helping her neighbors. But it's not stopping Mel and Jack from settling into Virgin River for good, and building a home where Lilly's farm once stood.

In the final two episodes of Virgin River season 5, which dropped November 30, 2023, Mel and Jack set off to find Mel's dad who turns out to be Everett, the very man who claimed he wasn't her father. Meanwhile, Jack's own parents are fighting, Lizzie clashes with their mom when she finally reveals she's pregnant, Lark is secretly working with Jimmy (Calvin's second-in-command), and Charmaine ends up giving birth to her twins. Whew!

We'll have to wait for December to see what Virgin River season 6 has cooked up for us.

It's no secret that Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield have crazy chemistry. When the duo presented at the 2023 Oscars, the internet went into a frenzy demanding they star in a rom-com together — and little did any of us know they already had one in the works! We Live in Time season is finally here because the romance movie hits NY & LA theaters on Friday, October 11 (and nationwide theaters October 18), and we have an exclusive look at how Florence and Andrew fostered their connection.

I was shocked to find out that Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield didn't know each other before that famous Oscar presentation — their connection comes across so strongly, I'd believe they'd known each other for a decade!

"No amount of studying chemistry can prepare you for whether it'll work or not," Florence says in a clip shared exclusively with Brit + Co. "It's all down to two energies meeting and wanting to be there for one another."

"If any of us have been in love, you know there's this spiritual element," Andrew adds. "We have a mutual care, a mutual respect, and a mutual inspiration for each other."

That care and understanding between the two actors means their performance was able to become even greater than it already was. "The more and more we work together, the more and more able we were to go to further places, to feel more vulnerable," Florence continues. "I just knew that I would be completely seen and held by this man."

This isn't the first time Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield have given us insight into how they fostered their connection. At a New York screening for the movie, Flo (as the internet affectionately refers to her), explained that both actors wanted "be great for each other every single day."

"We wanted to protect each other, hold each other, act with each other, live with each other in these moments," she says. "And we were so excited and so ready to come to work every single day so we could do it again and then by the end of the movie, we created a life together...It really did feel [like] magic in the moment, and it was because...we felt safe enough to do that for each other."
