These Are the Trendy Fashion Buys Our Editors Are Investing in This Year
Pulling the trigger and splurging on something you love is never easy, especially if it costs a whole paycheck. Even if you can imagine exactly what you’d pair it with, where you’d rock it (and how often), and how you’ll pay off that credit card before it starts racking up interest, buyer’s remorse is a b*tch. Here at Brit + Co, we believe in investing in quality over quantity when it comes to fashion, and saving up to buy clutch pieces to add to our wardrobes is par for the catwalk course. Scroll on to learn our editorial criteria for making expensive — and super stylish — decisions, without the regret.
ZOEY WASHINGTON, SENIOR FASHION + BEAUTY EDITOR
What trendy + spendy style item are you planning to invest in this year? My favorite fashion trend for 2018 is the revamped trench coat, so I will be saving my coins to get in on this style STAT. Trench coats never get old and they are virtually always in season. Not to mention, spending a few extra dollars on something that will most likely fit you no matter how many holiday pounds you put on is always a good idea.
If you have specific frontrunners, what are they? Clearly, I am not living the kind of life where I can drop thousands on a decked-out trench, but if I DID have that kind of dough, trust I would opt for this Loewe stunner from their Spring/Summer 2018 collection.
Why do you feel like this item is worth the investment? I love a good coat, but I particularly love a trend that can work past a single season and this fits the bill. Though classic styles will always have a place in my heart, I am really drawn to the new interpretations of the wardrobe staple for Spring 2018.
What would you wear this with and/or on what occasion(s)? All the occasions. All the outfits.
What will it take to pull the trigger? A serious pay raise.
What are some closet staples you’ve invested in that you couldn’t live without? Every bag I own was a good investment. I love the idea of building a wardrobe of luxe, yet wearable, wardrobe staples and then creating a look with accessories and handbags. It really makes packing so much easier.

What trendy + spendy item are you planning to invest in this year? A dress from Reformation! I browse their site all the time and I think this might finally be the year when I pull the trigger.
If you have any specific frontrunners, what are they? I am LOVING the striped Sophia Dress ($428). The pattern is both playful and sophisticated. It’s a total statement piece.
Why do you feel like this item is worth the investment? All their dresses are so striking and sexy, but also timeless. I’d be down to splurge on something from them because I’m all for their commitment to sustainable fashion. If I’m going to throw down, I’d love for my hard-earned money to go on to do some good in the world.
What would you wear this with and/or on what occasion(s)? Honestly, I would probably mimic the model’s look here — bold earrings, a simple updo, and some classic, black heels. This dress is pretty bold so it doesn’t need much else.
What will it take to pull the trigger? An invite! This is a dress I’d definitely wear to a wedding or gala or something along those lines. Friends, if you’re reading this, make me your plus one to something fancy so I can rationalize this purchase!
What are some closet staples you’ve invested in that you couldn’t live without? I have a Cambridge Satchel bag I love and have used for years. And as a new New York resident, a high-quality down coat is a must if you want to survive the winter! I don’t know what I’d do without my North Face puffer!

What trendy + spendy style item are you planning to invest in this year? I’m OBSESSED with Freda Salvador shoes. Like, all of them.
If you have specific frontrunners, what are they? The Keen Mule ($350) in red croc.
Why do you feel like this item is worth the investment? I feel like shoes are the most worthy of fashion investment. If they’re high-quality then they’ll last a long time, and when my feet are happy, generally speaking, I’m happy.
What would you wear this with and/or on what occasion(s)? I’d definitely wear these everywhere and with almost anything. Denim, dresses, even shorts. These gorgeous red leather babies are sure to take every outfit to a 10.
What will it take to pull the trigger? I like to reward myself when I achieve something worthy. So, as soon as that happens then I’m all in.
What’s another closet staple that you’ve invested in? My black Patagonia down sweater (or “poofers,” as my gals and I call these essential jackets) for early morning surf checks and everyday warmth.

What trendy + spendy style item are you planning to invest in this year? A new bag. I have a general idea of what I want in mind but I haven’t found “the one” yet. I feel like they usually find me.
If you have specific frontrunners, what are they? I look at the Clare V. Alistair Shoulder Bag ($345) at least once a week.
Why do you feel like this item is worth the investment? Because I will have this bag for decades. I do not play when it comes to investment pieces; I’m a very high/low person with fashion and beauty. I’ll wear an investment bag with a $10 shirt from Forever 21. I believe in investing in key pieces that will get a ton of wear, as well as items that are not trendy.
What would you wear this with and/or on what occasion(s)? This will go with almost anything I wear and I tend to stick with the same wardrobe colors — lots of black, white, and blush. I’ll definitely wear this one when I go out at night too.
What are a couple of other closet staples you’ve invested in that you couldn’t live without? I recently threw out all my old jeans and replenished with only Rag & Bone jeans. This sounds bougie but let me explain: I’ve found that R&B fits me better than any other brand and maintains the fit. They never stretch, they’re comfortable, they’re classic and rarely trendy. I’ll have these jeans for YEARS. Hands down the best item I’ve ever purchased are my Gucci loafers. Yes, they were expensive but they are quite literally the best shoes I have ever owned in my life. The leather legit feels like butter, and they form to your feet after a bit so they’re just a dream to walk on. Plus, they go with EVERYTHING I wear and will never go out of style!

What trendy + spendy item are you planning to invest in this year? The Stuart Weitzman Hiline Over the Knee Boot ($798).
Why do you feel like this item is worth the investment? The quality and fit of a Stuart Weitzman boot are what make them so sought after. They simply don’t compare to their less expensive replicas! Plus, there’s nothing that will stand the test of time like a flattering pair of footwear.
What would you wear these with? You can dress them up in a pair of leather leggings, a blouse, and a faux fur vest. Or, you can dress them down in plain leggings, an oversized sweater, and a scarf. That’s the beauty of these boots!
What are a couple of other closet staples you’ve invested in that you couldn’t live without? A Canada Goose jacket, my Hershel backpack, my cashmere blanket scarf, Paige jeans, and Lululemon Reveal leggings.
