EXCLUSIVE: Empress Gin Transports You To Flower-Filled Gardens With New Elderflower Rose Expression

empress gin's new flavor is infused with elderflower and rose

Sometimes, a single sip can whisk you away to magical places. My first taste of Empress 1908’s new Elderflower Rose Gin did just that – leaving me with the strong impression you’d expect from a spirit, but with lingering notes of delicate floral flavors.

Inspired by its place of origin, Victoria, British Columbia, the Empress Elderflower Rose Gin pays homage to the city’s extensive bouts of gardens and flower blossoms, which can be relished nearly year-round.

“We are always inspired by where we live and work,” says Phil Lecours, Master Distiller at Victoria Distillers. “We want to incorporate the spirit of those gardens in this new expression.”

This botanical take on Empress’ hallmark Empress 1908 Indigo Gin exemplifies just how popular elderflower and rose-flavored beverages have become. According to Datassential, interest in elderflower has grown 91% over the past four years, while rose has seen a 43% growth on restaurant menus since 2017, according to Mintel Menu Insights.

“I believe people are drawn to gin botanicals and floral smells and flavors as a result of their fresh clean fragrance and appearance. That is what nature intended,” says Lecours. “How many times have you jarred your head as you passed a bush or bouquet to have that smell linger a bit longer?”

A whopping nine unique botanicals meld together in the Empress Elderflower Rose Gin. The main inclusions are: juniper berries, elderflower, orange peel, red rose petals, and black carrot. The rose petals work to play up the spirit’s delicate yet fragrant aroma, and the black carrot stands out for its intricate sweetness. Each note is nicely complemented by the others, making for a beautifully balanced beverage.

“The black carrot is a close cousin to the more common orange carrot. There are differences beyond just the color,” says Lecours. “The black carrot is a touch bit sweeter and has a slight earthy spice to it. It adds a beautiful layer of sweetness to our gin along with an earthy complexity.”

At its heart, the Empress Elderflower Rose Gin is a stunning celebration of nature and elegance. The gin reaches its full potential when enjoyed in the signature Blossom & Tonic, which combines the gorgeous gin with tonic water, all topped off with a fresh orange slice. For even more botanical-filled cocktails, see the recipes below, courtesy of Empress.

Oh, honey! This luscious Christmas cocktail emulates the sticky sweetness of Honey Buns mixed with notes of gin, pineapple, and lemon. “The Bodega Buns is the unexpectedly harmonious marriage of a “tropical” gimlet and the bodega classic Honey Bun," says Trevor Langer, Head Bartender at NYC's Jac’s on Bond. "The odd couple pairing brings out the best tasting quality in one another and subdue what some can consider less desirable. I.e. the sharpness of the gin and brightness from the citrus cut the cloying sweetness one may experience when eating a packaged cake, whilst still allowing that delectable bready note to still be present. My favorite thing to hear, which happens most times people try this drink for the first time is: ‘That literally tastes like a Honeybun!’”

Buddy the Elf Cocktail

Half Baked Harvest

This festive cocktail combines vodka, Kahlua, maple syrup, vanilla, molasses, cinnamon, and ginger for the most holiday flavor you're ever had in a single drink. Buddy would definitely approve of the sweetness!

Shake 2 oz Proper Irish Apple, 2 oz Irish Cream Liqueur, and a dash of cinnamon together to make this decadent Christmas cocktail! Once it's shook and strained, pour the mix into a martini glass rimmed with crushed graham cracker and garnish with cinnamon.

Candy Cane Martini

Mixop

Mix some vanilla vodka, crème de menthe, half & half, and crushed candy canes to craft this Christmas cocktail. It's *so* creamy and perfectly balanced for the festivities!

It seems like people will post anything online without fear of consequences — and Sydney Sweeney has clearly had enough of it. After really invasive images of her in a bikini at home leaked to the press, a ton of hateful comments swarmed about the state of Sydney's body. The Euphoriaactress took to Instagram, calling out the plethora of hate and body-shaming in her comments...all without actually saying (or writing) a thing. Instead of letting her haters win, she let their words — and her muscles, TBH — speak for themselves.

See how Sydney Sweeney responded to all the body shamers below!

www.instagram.com

On December 12, 2024, photos of Sydney Sweeney wearing a bikini (in her own backyard) leaked to the press and spread like wild fire. It's clear the photos are super zoomed in, insinuating that paparazzi were eyeing her backyard from afar to get the shot of Sydney in her private home.

As if that wasn't awful enough, trolls took to the comments section of each article to body shame. Some comments call her hateful names like a "butterface" and "slimphat," while others inquire whether or not she's pregnant. If you're thinking this is very reminiscent of the 2000s tabloid heyday, you'd be right. We all grew up with this kind of invasive paparazzi, and while there's been pushback to a degree, it's unfortunately been normalized over time.

Thankfully, Sydney Sweeney decided she's not here to let this behavior remain normal in her life. Instead of posting a lengthy caption, or responding to every single troll in the comments section, Sydney made one very powerful video that says it all. The post opens up with screenshots of the horrible comments people made about her over the last few days — including their usernames — as the video flips through hateful message after hateful message. The video then cuts to Sydney in the gym, clearly training for her upcoming movie where she plays renowned boxer, Christy Martin.

With this single post, Sydney proved her strength in more ways than one. She proved that she's in great physical shape, with the ability to do (and crush) intense workouts left and right. She proved that she won't let these insensitive words bring her down. And she proved that she won't let haters hide in plain sight anymore — if you're gonna say something about her, she's putting your username on blast for her 23 million followers to see.

Now, not only do those body-shaming weirdos look dumb for calling her fat — and whatever other ways they tried to bring her down — but they also have their names attached to their words. And I, for one, am more than here for it. Go Sydney!

(PS: Let's leave celebrity's backyards off-limits, okay paparazzi?!)

Half Baked Harvest

And just like that, I'm in full on holiday mode. Can't help it, this time of year makes me so happy! And with Thanksgiving less than two weeks away it's hard not to be excited. Anyone else feeling the same?

We've been having the coziest weather up here in the mountains. It's inspired me to create recipes that will to warm us up from the inside out. That's honestly one of the cheesiest things I'll say, but it's the truth. I know it's hard to imagine a drink warming you up, especially one that's served over ice, but the spices in this wine spritzer do just that.

Half Baked Harvest

The key to this fun drink is the cranberry jam-syrup. It's actually kind of a mix between a jam and syrup. It uses fresh fruit like a jam would, but it's consistency is much more syrup like. So, it's kind of a cross between the two. Whatever you'd like to call it, it's a delicious mix of sweet honey, fresh tart cranberries, rosemary, and warming cardamom. The honey balances out the tart cranberries, while the rosemary and cardamon add coziness and warmth. Perfect for a Thanksgiving spritzer!

To make the jam, just add all ingredients to a pot. Bring to a boil, boil a minute or two, and done. So simple.

Half Baked Harvest

Once the jam has cooled, add it to a pitcher along with a bottle of your favorite rosé, elderflower liquor (this is my favorite right now), cranberry or pomegranate juice, and a few dashes of orange bitters. Chill the mix, and then just before serving, add fresh citrus slices. I used blood oranges, but regular oranges or grapefruit would be great too. Top it all off with fizzy, spicy, ginger beer (another one of my favorites).

This cocktail is both refreshing and warming, perfect for a chilly November night, or a snow-filled Thanksgiving Day complete with cozy blankets, a roaring fire, and candles galore.

Ingredients for Spiced Cranberry Rosé Spritzers

Half Baked Harvest

  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 cups fresh cranberries
  • 2 sprigs fresh rosemary, plus more for serving
  • 1 tablespoon cardamon pods or 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) rosé wine
  • 4 ounces elderflower liquor
  • 1/3 cup cranberry or pomegranate juice
  • 2-3 dashes orange bitter
  • 2 blood oranges or regular oranges, sliced
  • 4-6 (12 ounce) ginger beers, to your taste

Directions for Spiced Cranberry Rosé Spritzers

Half Baked Harvest

  1. To make the cranberry syrup: In a medium pot, bring 1/2 cup water, the honey, cranberries, rosemary, and cardamon to a boil over high heat. Boil 5 minutes or until the cranberries begin to burst, then remove from the heat. Let cool. Remove the rosemary and cardamon pods. If desired, strain out the cranberries.
  2. In a large pitcher, combine the cranberry syrup, rosé, elderflower liquor, cranberry juice, and orange bitters. Chill until ready to serve, up to 2 days.
  3. Add the orange slices and ginger beer just before serving. Garnish each drink with a candied rosemary (recipe below), if desired.

For the candied rosemary garnish:

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Gently run rosemary sprigs under a little water to dampen and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Sprinkle the rosemary with granulated sugar on all sides, making sure the rosemary is thoroughly coated in sugar.
  4. Allow to dry on the baking sheet for 1 hour. The rosemary can be made 1 day in advance and stored at room temperature.
