Emma Stone Shared a Childhood Drawing of Her “Anxiety Monster” on Stephen Colbert
Emma Stone has never been shy about sharing her emotions, and she’s not going to change now. During her time on Late Night With Stephen Colbert last night, the Battle of the Sexes star told the host that she started going to therapy for anxiety when she was seven years old, and that she still struggles with anxiety today.
“I was a very, very, very anxious child and I had a lot of panic attacks,” the Spider-Manactress said. When Colbert pulled out a drawing that Stone did to illustrate her anxiety, the actress laughed, saying, “I was in therapy at the time.”
Examining the drawing, she added, “This is me, I guess. It’s really great artistry with my shoes and then this is anxiety here. It’s a little green monster that looks a little bit, as someone backstage said, [like] a uterus with some ovaries. But I didn’t mean for it to be hormonally related in any way. Like I said, I was nine.”
Colbert, joking, played the role of therapist, while Stone shared that acting and improv have helped her to deal with her anxiety. She also said that although it’s never gone away, she doesn’t have the same anxiety attacks she had as a child.
Of course, Stone isn’t the only celeb who has battled anxiety. Billie Jean King, the tennis legend Stone plays in Battle of the Sexes, suffered from it as well.
“To bring it back around, Billie Jean was telling me the same thing,” the actress told Colbert. “She was going through so much in her life, which is what the movie is about, so much angst, but she’d walk out on that tennis court, and it was gone.”
