10 Empowering Feminist Reads From Emma Watson’s Book Club That'll Inspire You

empowering feminist reads from emma watson's book club

Emma Watsonmay have stolen our hearts with her brilliant portrayal as Hermione in the Harry Potter series or as Sam in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, but she’s also known for pursuing an English literature degree and championing sustainability in fashion. In between her acting and ethical pursuits, she decided to start a book club called Our Shared Shelf in 2016.

She first broke the news of her latest venture when she asked her Twitter followers to help her name the club. She writes, “Hi Team, I want to start a feminist book club but so far have only brainstormed ‘Feminist Book Club’ and ‘Emma Watson Book Club.'” In a follow-up tweet she added, “I am almost certain there is a more inspiring name out there…. Does anyone have any thoughts?!” Not surprisingly, a lot of people had a lot of thoughts — celebrities included. Sophia Bush threw out the name “fEMMAnismReads” but ultimately Emma went with another fan’s suggestion — hence the name Our Shared Shelf.

For a time, it was housed on Goodreads and encouraged open dialogue between members about Emma’s feminist book recommendations. Even after announcing that Our Shared Shelf would no longer be moderated, she encouraged members to keep reading and interacting with each other.

After revisiting the full list, here’s my top 10 must-read books from Emma Watson’s book club.

My Life on The Road by Gloria Steineim

Known for explaining feminism in a more modern way, Gloria Steineim’s My Life on The Road offers readers a different peek into her life’s views. Inspired by a childhood that was filled with adventures, Steinem made it her mission to continue traveling all over the world to learn more about others and fight for equality.

My Life on The Road goes into great detail about the many moments that not only helped mold who she is, but it also talks about how she was challenged to evolve as well. I highly recommend reading it to learn more about what drives Steinem.

The Color Purple by Alice Walker

The Color Purple is one of those books that stirs up a lot of feelings for anyone who reads it — or refuses to. It covers everything from molestation to queer love in a way that tends to linger once the book is finished and I think that’s the point. Alice Walker wanted to write something that makes people realize that while there is ugliness in the world, there’s still love, hope, and the art of realizing who you are. That these things make life worth living regardless of who tries to stop them or not.

How to be a Woman by Caitlin Moran

Emma Watson’s book club is full of great books about feminism and How to be a Woman is no exception. In her own way, Caitlin Moran points out the obvious about women — we still deal with oppressive ideas even though we’ve come far from being treated as witches who deserved death. She decides to cover hard conversations with a touch of wit and sarcasm, making it easy for the reader to say, “Ah, I knew something felt odd about this ‘normal’ thing.”

Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl by Carrie Brownstein

Carrie Brownstein’s memoir begins with recollections of her girlhood and the rock movement that set the stage for her future career. Like many of us, she searched for meaning in life and decided to take matters into her own hands by using music as an outlet. Thus began a long chapter of punk-rock in the 90s that defied all the rules of what was acceptable for women in a male-dominated industry.

More importantly, Brownstein talks about the love and community she found along the way which makes Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl a must-read in my eyes.

Women Who Run with the Wolves by Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés

It’s ironic to see this novel on Emma Watson’s book club list because I find myself reaching for it on a monthly basis. I think I stumbled across it after Jada Pinkett Smith mentioned it on an episode of the Red Table Talk and it’s been one of my saving graces ever since. Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés does a phenomenal job of explaining the different stages our psyches go through and how we can move through them.

She never promises that we’ll be unscathed as we learn how to trust our inner wild woman, but she does share — through stories passed down several generations — that there is a way to become a fully realized woman in a world that seeks to silence anyone it can’t control.

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

Margaret Atwood was ahead of her time when she wrote The Handmaid’s Tale because our current reproductive laws feel like we’re headed towards something that resembles the Republic of Gilead. It follows Offred’s journey as a fertile woman who’s forced to bear the children of one of the higher-ups without regard to her already having a husband and child whom she loves. It’s totalitarian and forces women beyond the role of a 1950s housewife.

Yet, Offred finds a way to get through her days and knows it’s only a matter of time before she escapes the hellish life she’s come to live.

The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf

Beauty has been redefined several times over the last millennium, but it’s clear that society still has a standard for it. It’s something that drives the fashion and beauty industries, causing women to feel as if they’re inadequate. However, Naomi Wolf seeks to help modern women break free from this idea that they have to achieve physical perfection in order to continue being seen as successful or worthy of good things in life.

Hunger by Roxane Gay

I find it interesting — in a good way — that Hunger is on Emma Watson’s book club list. Roxane Gay has never shied away from sharing her open and honest opinions about various things in life, but detailing her own struggles creates an air of relatability. Using food to deal with her conflicted feelings about her physical appearance and what feels good to her, Gay deep dives into what lies underneath her desire to eat.

After experiencing trauma at a young age, she and the reader begin understanding how she decided to protect herself by any means necessary. It’s a tale of accountability and finding one’s power again; something I think all of us experience at different points in our lives.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

I read The Hate U Give during a time when the unrest in Atlanta was reaching a fever pitch due to the police brutality happening around the world. It was scary to immerse myself in the world of Star, but I felt it was necessary to read about a fictional character who saw an innocent person’s life whisked away by an overly eager police officer.

As she grapples with the effects of trauma and the clashing of the two worlds she inhabits, Star eventually decides enough is enough.

Eloquent Rage by Brittney Cooper

Hilarious and heartbreaking at times, Eloquent Rage is one of those books that gives a crash course on what feminism looks like from a black woman’s perspective. It’s been on my shelf since my early twenties so seeing it on Emma Watson’s book club list makes my heart soar. Whether you’re looking for anecdotes on sex or the way our bodies are viewed, this book does an excellent job of breaking down society and pop culture in a digestible way.

After only two episodes of Only Murders in the Building season 4, Hulu renewed the series for season 5! I'm so excited that the show breaks a recent pattern of cancelling shows after the third or fourth season, giving us more time with our favorite characters, and I'm not the only one.

"Here we go again… my favorite set family. I’m coming home!" Selena Gomez says in an Instagram post, while the official Only Murders account made their own post, saying, "We had our lawyers call business affairs. Turned the 4 into a 5. #OnlyMurdersInTheBuilding is coming back for Season 5!!"

In addition to the show entering production, the one and only Renée Zellweger (Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy) just joined the cast. Iconic!

Here's everything you need to know about Only Murders in the Building season 5, coming to Hulu soon.

Who's in the Only Murders in the Building season 5 cast?

Eric McCandless/Disney

The Only Murders in the Building season 5 cast features all our favorites, and some new faces! According to Dan Fogelman, “we can expect more big guest stars that’ll probably be announced sooner rather than later,” he tells The Wrap.

"I am so grateful that I have been surrounded by human beings that make me better, challenge me, remind me day after day that every moment is a gift," Selena Gomez says about working with Steve Martin and Martin Short. "That’s my pure joy. I thank god for the era I’m in. It’s been the best yet."

The Only Murders season 5 cast includes:

  • Selena Gomez as Mabel Mora: a true crime lover who begins her own podcast after getting sucked into a murder mystery.
  • Martin Short as Oliver Putnam: a theatre director and founder of the Only Murders in the Building podcast.
  • Steve Martin as Charles Hayden Savage: an actor and true crime lover who begins the Only Murders podcast with Oliver and Mabel.
  • Téa Leoni as Sofia Caccimelio: a woman who approaches the podcast trio after her husband Nicky goes missing.
  • Renée Zellweger
  • Christoph Waltz
  • Keegan-Michael Key

What is Only Murders in the Building season 5 about?

Patrick Harbron/Disney

We finally got our first details about Only Murders season 5 — and we're going in a direction I totally didn't expect. When Sofia visits Mabel and Charles in the season 4 ending, and asks them to find her missing husband, she's disappointed when they turn her down. And since Téa Leoni just joined the season 5 cast, it looks like she's not taking no for an answer.

“I think she’s the great tease at the end of the finale and a little bit of an intriguing bump forward,” co-creator John Hoffman says in an interview with Deadline. “She’s an extension of the little news report in Episode 9 that Mabel makes note of at the hospital. [Sofia] is the wife of the Dry Cleaning King of Brooklyn, and maybe a couple of dry cleaning outlets in Manhattan, as well, we may come to know...It’s a world opened up potentially that we haven’t talked about too much yet in New York, so she holds a lot of intrigue.”

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

New York's underground is a wild space that we haven't really seen on Only Murders yet so I know we're in for one very interesting season — because if this show is going to go there, they're going to go there.

Executive producer Dan Fogelman told The Wrapwe can look forward to “another big fun mystery the writers have been cooking up," while Hoffman has gone on the record saying the new episodes will “hit on some very current things going on within New York, specifically very relevant things that are happening in the city right now.”

When is Only Murders in the Building season 5 coming out?

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

There's no Only Murders in the Building season 5 release date quite yet, but the show is in production! Considering we've had a new season over the last four years (with season 1 in 2021, season 2 in 2022, season 3 in 2023, and season 4 in 2024), we're expecting to see season 5 in 2025. Stay tuned for the official Only Murders season 5 release date.

How many episodes are there in Only Murders in the Building season 5?

Patrick Harbron/Hulu

Only Murders in the Building season 5 will have 10 episodes total on Hulu.

Check back here for the latest Only Murders in the Building season 5 news and check out the other new TV shows coming in 2025.

We've been teasing news surrounding Emily Henry's newest book Great Big Beautiful Lifesince last year partly because her enthusiasm made us want to learn everything we can about it. Fortunately, we're not the only ones because Cosmopolitan just shared an exclusive excerpt from its pages!

All it's doing is making us want to do is watch two writers fall in love while they unravel the enigma of the personality they may get a chance to profile. Ready to feel your heart racing as you get a glimpse of their personalities?

Scroll to read the thrilling excerpt from Great Big Beautiful Life!

Here's A Preview Of The 'Great Big Beautiful Life' Excerpt

Amazon

The excerpt starts off with Alice's POV as she's assessing Hayden's aloof nature. She says, "He can’t be as bad as he seems. And even if he is, it’s not like we’ll be spending time together," as they make their way to the Grande Lucia Resort they'll be lodging at (via Cosmopolitan).

There's an air of excitement surrounding Alice, but Hayden appears like he could care less about her enthusiasm based on these lines: "I glide back onto the mostly empty four-lane road that connects the mainland and Little Crescent and slow to a stop at a red light. Hayden’s in the next car over. He notices me too. I wave. He frowns."

While he does eventually talk to her, it's not like he's looking to be besties with his competition. From gruffly offering Alice a choice of days to interview Margaret Ives to lamenting the fact her hotel room is right next to his, Hayden doesn't seem like the kind of writer who's looking to be distracted. It could have everything to do with him feeling like he was "strung along for a month before even finding out" he and Alice would be in competition to secure the position of writing Margaret's biography.

It's apparent Alice Scott and Hayden Anderson aren't on friendly terms towards the beginning of Great Big Beautiful Life, but the excerpt Cosmopolitan's obtained paints a vivid picture of their enemies-to-lovers troupe. Though it's one of the most familiar book trends, Emily Henry refreshes it by adding the element of surprise to the novel's undertones. Lurking the two writers interactions with each other and the elusive Margaret Ives are hidden secrets that are ready to burst at their seams.

We finally know who The White Lotus killer is — and who didn't make it out of their vacation alive. We spent all of last week thinking about the possibility of who'd survive the White Lotus season finaleon April 6, and while some of our theories were proven correct (cough cough the poison fruit!!!), there are more than a few moments that shocked us. Keep reading for Mike White's The White Lotus season 3 finale recap!

Here's the only White Lotus finale summary & ending explainer you need.

'The White Lotus' season finale is as wild as you'd expect.

Stefano Delia/HBO

White Lotus season 3, episode 8, "Amor Fatie" opens with Rick returning to the White Lotus and reuniting with Chelsea on the beach. Chelsea leaves Saxon behind to run to her BF, and Saxon's longing look has fans in a tizzy because it appears Chelsea (and her self-help books) finally broke through to him and he's craving real connection now...even though he's still haunted by the incestuous encounter with Lochlan. (No, I still can't believe that happened either). The memory is even worse when Lochlan says he only got Saxon involved because he's a people pleaser and basically didn't want Saxon to feel left out. I'm sorry Mike White, WHAT?!

Piper also finally admits that she didn't enjoy staying at the monastery, and that she does actually need her material comforts, evoking two different emotions from her parents: Victoria is happy, Timothy is not. When Lochlan tells his dad he could live without money, the Ratliff family patriarch sets a plan into action, making the family (sans Lochlan) piña coladas with the poison pong pong fruit seeds mixed in.

After the family takes a sip, Timothy comes to his senses and stops them from drinking the rest...but in a twist of events, Lochlan makes a smoothie with the fruit seeds accidentally mixed in and nearly dies by the pool. But don't worry, he wakes up in his dad's arms, and then says he thinks he saw God. As one TikTok user put it, "him not cleaning the blender out is so youngest brother core."

What are people saying about The White Lotus finale?

HBO

Fans are happy with a standout moment from Laurie, Jaclyn, and Kate's last dinner at The White Lotus, where Laurie admits how sad she's been the whole vacation. After explaining that work, romance, and even motherhood haven't been able to fill the void she feels, she reveals their friendship is what gives her life meaning.

"Pleases me greatly to hear Carrie Coon got the Meghann Fahy finale moment," @burritoprophet jokes on X, references Meghann Fahy's standout scene from The White Lotus season 2.

"Meghann Fahy's monologue in s2 and Carrie Coon's monologue in s3...Mike White is a f—ing legend," @contaemplative adds.

Meanwhile, Gaitok tells Mook he knows who robbed the hotel boutique, later low-key confronting Valentin, who begs Gaitok not to report the crime. And after Belinda and Zion received $100,000 from Greg in last week's episode (to help Belinda start her own spa business), they actually get him to send $5 million. And Belinda is ready to get out of town. I would be too, TBH.

How does The White Lotus season 3 end?

Fabio Lovino/HBO

But the White Lotus season finale comes to a head when Jim and Sritala Hollinger show up at the resort and Jim antagonizes Rick, saying awful things about his mother. Chelsea tries to stop Rick from retaliating, but when he notices the couple's bodyguards aren't around, he ends up shooting Jim in the chest before learning he was Rick's father.

When the bodyguards and Rick end up in a shootout, Chelsea gets hit by a stray bullet and dies. PAUSE. This is, without a doubt, the saddest part of the whole season for me. Chelsea was literally the one person I wanted to make it out alive, and the look on her face as she dies (along with her tears) seem to show that even though "in the end Rick finally saw her as his soulmate, I can tell she finally saw he wasn’t," according to one TikTok comment, with another comment calling the heartbreaking moment "brutal."

But it doesn't end there. Rick tries to carry her body away but ends up getting shot by Gaitok. Turns out Rick and Chelsea will be together forever after all. Their bodies get taken off the island as Laurie, Jaclyn, and Kate comfort each other after the shooting, and the rest of the characters look toward the future.

Belinda and Zion leave the White Lotus on a private boat while the Ratliffs return to North Carolina, with Timothy promising they'll get through future trouble as a family. We didn't get to see the fallout of their financial troubles IRL, but who knows. Maybe this will play into The White Lotus season 4.
