5 Healthy Exotic Fruits to Spice Up Your Summer

When you say “summer fruit,” the first things we think of are watermelon kegs and strawberry shortcake — and though those seasonal staples will surely stay on the menu, we figured we’d introduce some new options to our rotation this year. Summer is the most abundant time for fruit, and the range of climates within the US allows for all sorts of delicious varieties to grow within our borders (have you heard about jackfruit yet?), so we want to make sure we’re taking full advantage. Read on for five favorite-in-waiting fruits that will make you want to rewrite your grocery list.

1. Loquat: Loquats are kind of like puppy yoga or sushi burritos — they take things we already like and put them together. The fruit tastes like a combo of plums, pineapples, and apricots (yes, please!), and it is primarily grown in California, Hawaii, and Florida. (Remember: To be more environmentally friendly, buy as locally as possible.) Loquats are a good source of fiber, potassium, and calcium and are thought to help alleviate digestive and respiratory problems. Enjoy them in jams, sorbets, and cobblers, but when you pick one up, you’d better hurry — they only stay fresh for about 10 hours.

2. Casaba Melon: If you’re in the cantaloupe fan club, check out the casaba melon, which grows in the southwestern United States. The casaba has a bright yellow rind marked by deep ridges, and its mild, sweet flavor has been likened to that of a cucumber. This melon is an excellent source of vitamins K and C, and it makes a great upgrade for its cousins cantaloupe and honeydew in fruit salads and beverages. Pick the optimal melon by finding one that feels heavy for its size and has a firm rind.

3. Lychee: Get your hands dirty this summer with some lychee, which must be pierced with one’s fingernail, then peeled and squeezed. Grown in China for over two millennia, the fruit has percolated into parts of the US — including Texas, California, Hawaii, and Arizona, though it has also been grown successfully elsewhere. Lychee can be beneficial for inflammation, heart health, and more. The flesh of the fruit is white-colored and gelatinous, so it works well in beverages & jams and as a topping for salads, pancakes, or waffles.

4. Sapodilla: Move over, Barq’s, because you’ve got an au naturel competitor — and it’s not sassafras. The brown flesh of the sapodilla tastes of brown sugar and root beer, so it’s most often enjoyed featured in desserts, such as milkshakes, cakes, and pudding. Sapodilla is chock-full of vitamin C and fiber, and you’ll know it’s ripe when the brown skin of the fruit “gives” under light pressure. Because it must be grown in tropical environments, Floridians and Hawaiians are the only Americans who can truly claim it as local.

5. Loganberry: Why choose between blackberries and raspberries? A fusion of the two popular fruits, loganberries were first grown in the late 1800s by a judge from Santa Cruz, CA, but they can be grown across the country. Loganberries can be eaten fresh as a source of fiber and vitamin C, but they are also frequently enjoyed in cakes or coulis. Unsurprisingly, they look similar to blackberries and raspberries, so be attentive when you’re searching for them at the supermarket.

The first step in any good skincare routine is cleansing. In the morning, opt for a lightweight cleanser that's gentle and water-based to freshen up your skin. 2. Exfoliate

Once you're finished cleansing, you'll want to exfoliate, which is key to maintaining radiant skin. By getting rid of dead skin cells, exfoliating regularly will speed up skin turnover, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, keep your pores clear, and enhance the absorption of your anti-aging skincare products.

1. Chamoy Pickles

People couldn't quit it with the chamoy pickles (AKA chickles) this year. I never would've guessed that chamoy, a condiment made from dried fruits, chilies, sugar, and lime juice, would be slathered atop the sourest pickles money can buy.

But the food trend didn't stop at just chamoy – many snackers stuffed their pickles with everything from the likes of Hot Cheetos, Takis, and Fruit Roll-Ups. What?!

This insanely sour, tangy treat kickstarted what the internet's coined as the 'Red 40 Diet', which certainly cannot be medically advised.

If you care for your GI tract, this food trend is 100% worth skipping and leaving behind in 2024.

2. Pickle + Jalapeño-Infused Diet Coke

Diet Coke, pickle juice, and jalapeño juice = all the ingredients needed to concoct Dua Lipa's controversial 2024 drink. She loves it, but I on the other hand, do not.

Now, don't get me wrong: I love a good unexpected flavor combo, but gulping down a simultaneous dose of both pickle juice and jalapeño juice was not tasty to me whatsoever.

This trend even sparked a slew of Sonic diners to start ordering their soft drinks with pickles – but as divisive as this trend can be ("Don’t knock it till you try it," TikToker Mississippi Memaw told Food and Wine), it's just flat out weird.

3. Cucumber Salad

If you bought a mandolin slicer recently, you might as well admit you're a victim of the TikTok-viral cucumber salad trend that made its rounds this year.

"Sometimes you need to eat an entire cucumber," TikTok user @logagmsounds off in the intro of every single one of his cucumber salad videos. And thus, the food trend was born.

It felt like I couldn't go a day on TikTok without seeing at least 5 recipes for a damn cucumber salad. When it comes down to it, I can appreciate the novelty (and taste) of this trend, but not the oversaturation. I'm gonna eat an entire cucumber one day, and get so tired of it the next. New innovations in 2025, please!

4. Sea Grapes

It was like people wanted to eat the weirdest, grossest things in 2024. I can't blame 'em, especially if it's for clicks and views. But this food trend in particular literally made me want to gag – and I was only watching people eat through a screen (any fellow ASMR fans out there?).

They don't look like they're supposed to be crunchy, but they are. Sea grapes grow from aquatic plants and are filled with essentially what is a "salty liquid." They burst in the mouth when you eat them (one TikToker called them 'edible Orbeez'). Yuck.

5. Exploding Candies

The final (and especially weird) food trend I propose we leave behind in 2024 is these dang exploding jelly candies. They also made their rounds on ASMR TikTok, and I truly cannot stand to watch a single video featuring them.

First off, they look so annoying to consume. The fruit-shaped jellies are contained in a thin layer of plastic that's meant to burst open when you sink your teeth into it, prompting you to slurp out the sweetness inside. But what irks me the most is the fact that many people trying them can't even break the seal.

I'd rather watch someone make a simple PB&J than go to town on these microplastic-infused candies.

He’s back! Dumbledore is back! Okay, maybe that’s not exactly the same as Daniel Radcliffe’s iconic line from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (he is warning the wizarding world about Voldemort, after all), but the sentiment still rings true because John Lithgow just confirmed he’ll be starring as the Hogwarts headmaster in Max’s new Harry Potter TV show.

While promoting his new movie The Rule of Jenny Penn, John Lithgow told ScreenRant in a video interview that he's going to be playing the role of Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter TV show.

"It came as a total surprise to me. I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it's going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I'm afraid," the actor said. "But I'm very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That's why it's been such a hard decision. I'll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I've said yes."

Now HBO hasn't officially announced the news yet, and added that while they "appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation," they'll "only confirm details as we finalize deals."

One detail we do know? The show should start filming this summer at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, so we might see some very familiar sets!

Ben Barnes and Andrew Garfield are two very popular fancasts (as Sirius Black and Remus Lupin, respectively) — and they’ve both actually talked about the roles! Andrew told BBC that he "will consider any role offered, how's that?" when asked about a potential role in the reboot, while Ben told Us Weekly in February 2025 that “You wouldn’t believe the amount of Harry Potter books I’ve signed or Gryffindor scarves I’ve been given as gifts,” adding “the amount of fan fiction that I’ve been drafted into very enthusiastically is incredible.”

“It’s been going on for 20 years that people have been very kindly saying that they would’ve liked me to have played a young version of the Sirius Black character in Harry Potter, but now it’s been going on so long that I’m now the age of the actual character in the books,” he joked.
