A Fall Equinox Ritual: Welcoming Creativity Through Balance

fall equinox ritual

The Fall Equinox is a special time for creative and intuitive types. This year, the Equinox falls on Wednesday, September 22, so if you're interested in taking advantage of the unique energies of this time period, that's the day to bookmark.

The equinoxes mark the dates when both day and night are equal in length, and when we're exactly halfway between the Summer and Winter solstices. Because of this focus on perfect balance, the equinoxes are great times to reflect on the role balance plays in our own lives. Are we working too much? Playing too much? Traveling so often we don't feel grounded? Feeling stuck in place?

For those of us who are interested in creativity, balance is absolutely crucial. It's nearly impossible to bring new things of value into the world if you're stressed all the time, and it's similarly difficult if you're stuck on the opposite side of the spectrum, unable to motivate yourself to be productive. Whether it's your work life, your relationships, your self-care routines, your diet, or your finances that need balance, the Fall Equinox is a great day to set an intention to create balance in your life so creativity has an opportunity to come through.

This ritual involves calling upon the energies of the Autumn Equinox to help you set boundaries, regain balance, and create space for your next big idea to come into being.

What You'll Need

  • A purple candle and match or lighter
  • A black candle
  • A pen and two pieces of paper
  • A creative work that inspires you, such as a book, a photo, an album or an art print
  • Access to a freezer (the one in your fridge will do just fine)
  • A plastic sandwich or Ziplock bag

The Ritual

Part I: Setting Boundaries

  • On Wednesday, during a time when you can be alone and won't be bothered or distracted, sit quietly with your supplies and light the black candle.
  • Take some time to breathe deeply, ground and center yourself in the space.
  • Pull out your pen and paper. Once you feel like you're in a calm and meditative state, use the paper to write your thoughts on the following prompts:
    • What areas of my life are lacking balance?
    • Why am I currently prone to imbalance in this area? Is there a deeper reason I'm neglecting the other side of my needs?
    • How does this imbalance make me feel? (Be sure to note if it makes you feel angry, sad, frustrated at someone, afraid of change... all of these thoughts and emotions are valid and important to note.)
  • When you're done answering the prompts, fold the paper in half, bringing the bottom corners of the paper up to meet the cop corners. Keeping the paper on the table or floor in front of you, turn it half-way to the left. Now, fold it from the bottom to the top again. Turn left again. Repeat until it's difficult to fold the paper anymore.
  • Carefully drip some wax from the black candle onto the paper to "seal" it (it doesn't have to be a perfect seal... this is symbolic, after all). Set the paper aside.
  • Blow out the black candle and watch the smoke twirl through the air. Envision the smoke as embodying the negative factors that were preventing you from achieving balance. Watch those factors float away into the air.
  • Put the paper into the plastic bag, and then put it in the back of your freezer. It's going to stay there for the foreseeable future—try to just forget about it.

Part II: Inviting In Creativity

  • Come back to the area where you were sitting before. Light the purple candle.
  • Again, take some time to ground and center yourself, breathing deeply and cultivating a meditative mindset.
  • Take the inspiring object (your book, art print, album, etc.) into your hands. Close your eyes. Try to feel all the work, energy, and creativity that went into making this inspiring work. Spend a good three to five minutes absorbing its energy (if your object was a musical piece, a comedy sketch, or something more audible than visual, feel free to play it in the background while you concentrate!).
  • Put your object aside and take out your second piece of paper. On the paper, write your thoughts on the following prompts:
    • What is it about my chosen creative work that inspires me?
    • What did it probably feel like to create this work? (Really try to get into the mindset of the creator here.)
    • What is one habit I can implement today that will help me make more space for creativity in my life?
  • When you're done answering the prompts, fold the paper in half, this time folding it from the top toward the bottom. Turn it half-way to the right, and fold in half again. Just like before, repeat this until you can no longer fold the paper easily.
  • As you did in Part I, "seal" the paper, this time with the purple wax. Set the paper aside.
  • Blow out the candle, and this time as you're watching the smoke spread through the air, envision that the smoke represents your wishes for creativity being carried out into the universe.
  • Take the piece of paper with you and head outside. Bury the paper in the soil to represent the planting of a seed that will eventually grow into a strong and beautiful tree.

We ring in the New Year with a New Moon on December 30. This is the perfect opportunity to set our intentions with conviction. Unlike many New Year’s resolutions that we often abandon after a few weeks, the energy of the planets this year supports us to follow through with our goals and truly transform our lives.

Read your Weekly Horoscope for December 29 to January 5, including a glittering New Year's Eve horoscope.

New Year's Eve Horoscope Overview: What To Expect Astrologically This Week

Brit + Co

Many of us are aware of vague, innate blockages that prevent us from living life to the fullest, without fully understanding their origins. These blockages—whether insecurities or scars from childhood or even past lives—cling stubbornly to our consciousness, hindering us from achieving our goals and ideals. Chiron, known as the Wounded Healer and Shaman of the Zodiac, often holds the key to these obstructions in our birth charts.

This week, Mercury, the planet of communication and knowledge, forms a harmonious trine with Chiron. This alignment encourages us to delve deep, uncover our impediments, and, in doing so, heal and move forward. Writing can be a powerful tool in this process, as can conversations with a therapist or astrologer.

Big Lessons In Communication Are Coming This Week

Brit + Co

Also this week, Chiron squares Saturn, the planet of responsibility and structure. This aspect challenges us to put in the work to remove these obstructions and create a solid framework for healing and learning from our wounds. The Sun in Capricorn sextiles Saturn in Pisces on January 4, further supporting us to uncover hidden hindrances and to find ways to fully express ourselves.

On January 2, Venus, the planet of personal love, enters Pisces, the archetype of universal love. Venus will remain in Pisces until February 5, when it transitions into Aries. During this month-long transit, we are encouraged to express love in refined and dignified ways that encompass humanity and all living beings. This is a time to deepen personal love connections and strengthen bonds with those we care for, including our animal companions. Imagine the impact if we all focused on spreading this healing, loving energy in our interactions with the world!

However, the peaceful and loving energy of Venus in Pisces is tempered by Mars, the planet of war, which will again oppose Pluto, the planet of transformation. This marks the second of three exact oppositions, bringing aggressive and confrontational energy. While this alignment reflects potential escalation in global conflicts, on a personal level it offers an opportunity to channel this intensity toward achieving personal goals. Use this energy wisely to propel yourself toward freedom and positive change, but avoid aggressive behavior and potentially dangerous situations.

You'd think someone with acne-prone skin wouldn't buy viral beauty finds without doing thorough research, but I'm not above trying to recreate all the latest makeup trends at home. All this did was remind me that everything isn't for everyone — and that's okay! Well...it's not okay I fee like I wasted money, but at least I know what to stay away from. And now I'm here to help you figure out what to avoid as well!

Even though this products didn't work for me, that doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't use them. These are just my least faves of the year — take 'em or leave 'em!

Here are all the overrated beauty finds I wish I wouldn't have bought

Amazon

1. MILK Hydro Grip Primer

I should've known better than to buy this again, but I wanted to see if my skin would react better to it. The first time I tried to use this, I broke out along my jaws in tiny, red bumps. They were itchy and eventually turned into dark spots that took me over a year to get rid of.

Instead of letting that be the red flag that kept me away from this beauty find, I decided to use it in place of my trusted e.l.f. Cosmetics Power Grip Primer I've been relying on. Two things happened:

  1. It created a beautiful base for my makeup.
  2. I didn't break out, but my faced still felt itchy.

I even switched my makeup brushes and checked to make sure other makeup products weren't expired. The culprit continued to be this primer so it's made it to my overrated list.

Amazon

2. KORA Organics Kakadu Plum Vitamin C Serum

I was initially sent this to test, but I decided to buy it myself to see if I truly like it. While it was easy to add to my skincare routine lineup, I realized I actually didn't need to spend $70+ for an effective Vitamin C serum. The only difference between this serum and the one I truly love are their colors and textures.

This one has a slightly yellowish-orange tint to it while being a little thicker compared to the Timeless Skin Care Vitamin C serum I use. The latter is thinner and 100% transparent, plus the odor is slightly stronger. However, both of them aid in smoother skin, smaller pores, and a healthy glow.

I honestly wouldn't buy this one again just because I can get the same benefits for a lesser price.

Amazon

3.NYX Cosmetics Fat Oil Lip Drip

This is a controversial take, but I honestly didn't love the NYX Fat Oil Lip Drip. Although I love the color payoff, it was too sticky for my liking. I saw reviews that mentioned this, but I've purchased lip glosses other people didn't love that worked for me in the past. However, the reviews are telling the truth: the stickiness takes away from what could've been a great formula.

I'll just stick to my Tower 28 Lip Softie Hydrating Lip Treatment in Ube Vanilla!

Amazon

4. L'Oréal Voluminous Panorama Washable Mascara

I know people love this beauty find because it is great. I just didn't think the hype was enough to convince me to buy it again because my essence Lash Princess False Lash Effect Mascara gets the job done for $5. I will say I love the washable feature of L'Oréal's version, but it's still not enough to make me willingly spend over $10 for it.

As great of a product as this is, it's overrated to me because of the price tag.

Sephora

5. Haus Labs Triclone Skin Tech Medium Coverage Foundation

Sigh...it's so hard for me to admit this, but this Haus Labs foundation has become my most overrated beauty find of 2024. It's not that it doesn't work for a few hours, but my skin prefers tinted moisturizers more than anything. I talked about it briefly on TikTok, but skin tints feel like you're not wearing anything on your face.

I'm always really oily after wearing this foundation for a few hours, but I can get extended wear out of the Danessa Myricks Yummy Skin Tint I've been wearing. I like to think it's because it has vegan collagen, ceramides, and cactus extract in it whereas this foundation has ingredients like fermented arnica in it.

Both do a great job of calming inflammation, but something about this foundation makes my skin think it's incredibly dry.

Making friends as an adult can be difficult but keeping friends? Apparently that's even harder. Miscommunication, Venmo requests, and romance can test even the best of friendships, but you really don't want to ignore any serious red flags in your relationships. A friend who only takes & never gives, someone who never listens, and someone who acts like they're the center of the universe are just a few no-no's you want to keep an eye out for.

These 13 friendship red flags should be deal breakers in your relationship.

1. Acting possessive is a huge friend red flag.

Vitaly Gariev/Unsplash

"You don't have to prove you're my BEST friend by constantly saying it to everyone out loud or excluding people with inside jokes — you can just BE my best friend," says editor Haley Sprankle. Like y'all, friendships aren't supposed to make us feel like an item!

2. They don't care about your boundaries.

Brit + Co

If a friend doesn't care about boundaries you've set in place, that's a clear sign they don't actually value your relationship. One user on X thinks it's a huge red flag if "they do not respect your time, boundaries, energy, possessions, work, privacy, or space. They expect you to change and adjust yourself to their liking."

3. It's a red flag if a friend never pays attention during conversations...

Obie Fernandez/Unsplash

One big friend red flag is when someone never pays attention while you're trying to have a heart-to-heart — or if they're checking other messages. "One of my pet peeves is when people constantly check their Apple watches when we're in the middle of a conversation," says Entertainment Editor Chloe Williams. "Which is also why I will never buy one for myself."

4. Or if they only talk about themselves.

Brit + Co

We all joke that our dates never ask us questions, but the same rule should apply to friendships! Staff writer Kayla Walden considers it a friend red flag if someone "never [reciprocates] questions and [asks] how I am (a selfish needy Gemini here)." So valid.

5. Never learning to work through disagreements should be a friendship red flag.

Diva Plavalaguna/Pexels

"A red flag in friendships is being agreeable on every little thing," @mikaylaxcvi says on X. "I’d much rather be told the truth, lightly & sweetly, than coddled. A grow together type of friendship." Preach.

6. Realizing a friend expects to be the center of your universe is a huge no-no.

Brit + Co

Staff writer Jasmine J. Williams says one issue she finds in friendships is if the supposed friend wants to be the most important person in every situation, like "getting upset because of your work schedule, life's emergencies, navigating newborn stage, etc." No thanks!

7. A friend shouldn't be rude to others.

Joshua Rawson-Harris/Unsplash

It's totally natural to be closer to some people than others. But making a point to exclude everyone around you? Not the vibe. "Red flag: when I notice they make plans without including everyone in the room but they make it loud enough for everyone to hear that they're making plans," says Brit + Co Social Media Assistant Melanie Cornejo.

8. And a friend shouldn't be overly critical.

Matteo Di Iorio/Unsplash

B+C editor Haley also things a friend red flag is when someone is "critical of all their friends' new relationships."

9. Turning every single detail into a competition is a friendship red flag.

Roman Aguila/Unsplash

"Acting like everything is a competition really stresses me out and definitely has the potential to end a relationship before it begins," Entertainment Editor Chloe says. "It just makes every conversation feel inauthentic."

10. And friends DEFINITELY shouldn't talk behind your back.

Brit + Co

Talking crap to other people is a major friend red flag, hello! "If you are friends with someone who talks sh—t about people but smiles in their face later in front of you..Guess what they’ll eventually do to you?" @oriiizgold tweeted.

11. A friend also shouldn't make you feel bad about yourself.

cottonbro studio/Pexels

It's not great if friends "make 'innocent jabs' at you around other people," Social Media Assistant Melanie says. If conversations constantly make you feel bad, then that's definitely not good, y'all.

12. Outright refusing to engage with current issues isn't great.

Hitesh Choudhary/Unsplash

Limiting your social media & news exposure for mental health is one thing, but completely ignoring the state of the world is another. "If you [don't know] and don't wanna know about war crimes, current conflicts, and famine is just you enjoying your privilege and living in your bubble and I see it as a lack of humanity so...red flag," @OvenPsychological485 says on Reddit.

13. And don't forget, YOU don't want to have friendship red flags either!

Prince Akachi/Unsplash

"My friendship red flag for myself is when I notice myself starting to contort into being obsessively helpful & overly accommodating," @pigletish says on X. "Means I don’t feel comfortable, am masking to perform likability & need to check-in on why I feel discomfort." That's a good reminder for us all!

Studio McGee has spent the last decade inspiring us with a blend of accessible and elevated designs, creating beautiful and totally livable spaces. In her 2025 Home Decor Trends report, Shea McGee emphasizes that home decor trends evolve gradually over time, and I couldn’t agree more. Unlike the fast-paced world of fashion, where trends shift every season, these design moves develop organically over time, and that's good for your wallet and taking your time to create a space you love. Get inspired to refresh your home in 2025 with a few new accents, from embellishments like fringe to maybe a little western or seaside art.

Here are Studio McGee's 2025 Home Decor Trend Predictions, with a few surprises!

Photo: Shade Degges | Design: Studio Mountain

Romantic Silhouettes

Take Romantic Silhouettes, for example. This is a trend we've seen steadily gain traction over the past few years. Think curvy furniture, delicate floral prints, and soft blush hues — when curated thoughtfully, these elements can become timeless staples in your home.

Western Cowboy

This is a design trend that totally surprised me, but I'm so happy to see it in the mix. Elements like leather furniture, rustic accessories, equestrian art, even wood walls, shown in this office designed by A1000XBetter, are making an impact in 2025 and beyond. But Shea notes that you can take this trend literally or just be inspired by the look. You can also mix it with other styles to personalize it for you. Add romantic pillows or ruffled tablecloths like McGee & Co. x Loeffler Randall Gardenia Ruffle Border Tablecloth – things you love that make it yours vs. based solely on one trend.

Gavin Carter| Design: House of Rolison

Saturated Colors

Shea predicts that rich hues like deep browns, oxblood red, and earthy greens will continue to dominate home decor colors going into 2025. House of Rolison's bathroom brown is an excellent example of this beautiful trend.

courtesy of Stewart-Schafer

Pattern Drenching

Embracing a single pattern and drenching an entire room in it — from walls to pillows, headboards, and curtains — is a surprise trend for 2025. This maximalist approach, which has been quietly gaining traction, draws inspiration from Arts and Crafts designers like William Morris and has been in and out of vogue since the Victorian era.

McGee & Co.

Embellishments

This is a trend you can easily DIY to add an extra layer of charm to your decor. Think playful details like fringe accents —beautifully shown in McGee & Co.'s Philippa Settee — along with tassels, pleats, ruffles, and rope. It’s all about embracing texture and whimsy, so have fun with it!

McGee & Co.

Seaside Inspiration

Coastal decor has long been an influence in design and you can be inspired by it in many forms, from shell accents to beach-inspired artwork like McGee & Co.'s Distant Coastline art to textured seagrass baskets and jute rugs. Even the soothing hues of the sea — think soft blues, sandy neutrals, and gentle greens — can inspire your 2025 spaces.
