The snow is melting, yay! But that still doesn’t mean the summer sun is shining — at least not yet. With spring right around the corner, it’s time to plan a family-friendly getaway. And while past spring breaks may have included boozy afternoons at a swim-up bar followed by even boozier nights, this time, you want to plan a trip that’s all about the kids. Before you book, check out these family spring break vacation ideas.
1. Beach Fun: Nothing says spring break like a beach trip, obviously. But here’s the thing — you have kids now. So forget about those drink-all-day beach towns. Instead try a low-key beach, such as Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA; Hilton Head, SC; or Menemsha Beach in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.
2. Disney Anything: Who wants to have breakfast with the princesses? Disney offers a serious array of fab family options. Whether you’re into the traditional Disneyland or Disney World experience or are ready to cruise on the iconic brand’s liner, your littles will more than delight in spending time with some of their favorite animated idols.
3. Family Camping: No, your child is not too young to camp! Even though your tot may not appreciate the great outdoors in the same way you do, they’ll get a kick out of sleeping under the stars or having storytime around the campfire.
4. Museum Madness: How many museums can your family fit in during their spring break? Pick a city that boasts plenty of kid-friendly options, such as NYC or Washington, DC. Even though “big cities” are prime choices, you can also get your museum madness in less-than-major locales: Check out Pittsburgh, Rochester, or Baltimore too.
5. National Parks: If camping isn’t your favorite, you can still take the kiddos to visit with a natural landscape. National parks are perfect daytime trip ideas. Go hiking, biking, or just spend the day playing outdoors. When night falls, you can check into a nearby hotel.
6. Get Historical: Destinations such as Colonial Williamsburg have enough of an entertainment factor to keep the little ones busy while you learn a thing or two.
7. Lake Living: Oceans aren’t the only bodies of water with beaches — a lake trip is a relaxed family trip to consider. And since spring is still off-season in many areas, that means possible discounts on vacation house rentals or hotel rooms. Fave family lake options include Deep Creek Lake, MD; Lake George, NY; Grand Lake, CO; and Big Bear, CA.
8. Staycation Style: There’s no rule saying that you have to leave your home city to go on a vacation. When a train, plane, or car trip just doesn’t appeal, plan a week’s worth of family fun at home. Whether you stay home and plan crafts, fun meals, or movie days in or choose parks, museums, and other nearby attractions, you’ll save money, time, and headaches.
