New York Fashion Week may be officially over, but we’re left with some next-level street style looks to copy for seasons to come. NYC’s brutal weather (snowstorm, much?) didn’t stop fashion’s elite from pulling out all the style stops. Fashionistas were wearing their fringe skirts (yes, skirts in the frigid cold!) and the coolest ’70s-inspired jackets we ever did see. The cold weather did cause some major sartorial changes, like heavy layering and badass lace-up platform boots, much to our delight. We’re sharing nine of the most noteworthy trends spotted on the streets of New York, plus tips for incorporating them into your everyday wardrobe.
Wearing fringe on any day other than Halloween can be tricky, but we’ve noticed editors and bloggers rocking this trend lately. Our tip? Try pairing a flamboyant fringe skirt or dress with leggings and a menswear-inspired coat to achieve this new, cool-girl look. (via Tommy Ton/Style.com)
2. Start Sewing Patches on Your Denim
We know what you’re thinking… and yes, the ’90s are indeed back. Take a cue from Lucky’s Editor-in-Chief, Eva Chen, and go all out with this funky trend by wearing a bright coat (or sweater) and trendy sneakers. You’ll be comfortable and oh-so-edgy. (via Phil Oh/Vogue)
3. Belt Your Outwear
This is one of those classic trends that you need to bookmark NOW. There’s no easier way to make a bulky coat look instantly polished than to belt it. (via Tommy Ton/Style.com)
4. Dare to Wear a Bandana
If you haven’t noticed, bandanas are officially back… though we’d really like to know when they were ever “out.” This is no doubt one of the most versatile accessories around. Wrap it around your wrist, wear it in your hair, tie it on your bag or simply around your neck. The possibilities are endless! (via The Blonde Salad)
5. Swap your Stilettos for Weather Boots
This is one trend Miranda Priestly probably wouldn’t approve of, but when the temps cool, the last thing you want to wear is strappy heels. Throw on a pair of sleek boots to trek around the city in, or if you want to add some weight, try platform boots. They’re just as chic — we promise! (via Emil Lendof/Fashionista)
6. Hop on the ’70s Style Train
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you should know that the ’70s are in. So “IN,” in fact, that every single designer (with the exception of Rachel Zoe, surprisingly) paid homage to the decade in their F/W ’15 collections. Modernize the trend by testing out a pair of denim culottes or buying that patchwork jacket you’ve been eyeing. (via Ryan Kibler/WWD)
7. Carry a Mini Bag
First spotted on French editors and street style bloggers during last season’s Paris shows, now the mini bag is making its way to this side of the pond, and we couldn’t be happier. Swap your large and no doubt heavy tote in favor of this chic option instead. Bonus points if you go for a bold color like green or hot pink. (via Emil Lendof/Fashionista)
8. Forget Your Coat
Traditional coats are SO last season. This season, it’s all about the blanket coat (a.k.a the poncho). Unfortunately, the Burberry version spotted on all the it-girls will set you back a pretty penny, but luckily there’s a plethora of options at your favorite fast fashion retailers. Get on it, girl. 9. Wear Your Jacket Over Your Shoulders
This is by far the easiest way to get the editor-approved look for free. Simply layer your most luxe-looking coat over your blazer, sweater or jacket, and voila! Watch out, Anna Wintour! Warning: It’s a little awkward to carry your cross-body purse (but so worth it). (via The Stylograph, Kevin Kim/Fashionista)
