With Mother’s Day coming up, and the pressure on to top last year’s gift, we realized that all we really want is to spend some quality time together. Share a cup of coffee or tea with mom by making her these easy DIY faux granite and marble coasters. We’ve been obsessed with textured spray paint ever since we made these mini decorative planters!
Materials:
— Sculpey oven baked clay (we used about 2.5 packs of 8-ounce white Sculpey clay)
— blue tape
— parchment paper
— cardboard
— acrylic paint
— paper plate for your paint
Tools:
— knife
— baking tray
— rolling pin
— paint brush
— pen
— scissors
Cut your parchment paper large enough to roll your clay out on top.
Warm up the Sculpey clay in your hands so that you can roll with ease. Place another sheet of parchment paper over the piece of clay and slowly roll into an even surface 1/4 inch wide.
Use your knife to cut the edges of your coasters. Since we chose to make imperfect geometric shapes, our cuts varied coaster to coaster.
Use blue tape to create straight edges and protect a section of the coaster that you do not want spray painted. Place the taped coasters onto your cardboard and lightly spray your coasters until you get the desired effect. We found that spraying short spritzes gave us more control over both the granite and marbling texture. Once dry, slowly peel off the blue tape.
You can also paint sections with acrylic paint first!
