Picking a paint color for your home can feel like a huge decision, especially with all the Pinterest-perfect neutrals and trendy pastels to choose from. And when it comes to nationwide preferences, people only grow more divided. In case you’ve ever wondered how your tastes compared to everyone else who lives in the US, the folks over at Behr paint have created this super sweet infographic to break it down by state. Check it out and get inspired to bring a little more (or less) color into your space.

From the findings, each state’s natural landscape appears to have a huge influence on its preferred paint color. For example, folks in the PNW are attracted to deep, mossy greens, while those in Arizona go for a rosy hue that looks an awful lot like desert rocks. Neutrals are a nationwide favorite, and there are a few states who dare to stand out, like Texas with its choice of vivid green, Oklahoma with mandarin orange, and DC’s wild berry purple obsession.

Big cities like New York and LA seem to prefer lighter shades, and that’s probably due to the fact that small rentals look bigger in bright whites and softer pastels.

So whether you’re inspired by your hometown landscape, are seeking a shade that lightens up your tiny city rental, or you’re just craving some more energy on your walls, use your state’s favorite color to guide your next room makeover.

  • Paint in natural light: If possible, paint during the day when natural light is brightest. This helps you catch any missed spots or uneven coverage more easily.
  • Start with the edges: Use a brush to “cut in” around the edges of the ceiling, creating a border. This makes it easier to roll paint up to the edges without bumping into walls or light fixtures.
  • Use a pole extension: An extension pole gives you better control, minimizes neck strain, and helps you achieve an even coat.
  • Roll in one direction, then cross-roll: Apply the first coat by rolling in one direction, usually parallel to the longest wall. Then, cross-roll by going perpendicular to the first direction to avoid streaks.
  • Let each coat dry. This is the kind of project you don't want to rush, so let your layers dry before applying another coat. The paint can should say drying times for the best finish!

"Lately, I’ve been captivated by the power of contrasting materials and colors to transform this essential room," says Amr Samaha, founder of LA-based Samaha Studio. "In our latest project, we’ve paired the timeless elegance of French white oak cabinets with a striking maroon paint." Here's a peek at Amr's design and several other designer picks for the best kitchen cabinet colors this year.

Amr's bold choice of a maroon hue adds warmth and depth, creating a kitchen that is both sophisticated and inviting. "To add some drama and mystery into a kitchen, this deep saturated violet with warm red undertones is a beautiful choice. Amanda Leigh at House of Rolison seconds the redder tones for a warm and stimulating color. Her favorite? Benjamin Moore Nicholson Red. "We love coordinating a cabinet color to the vein of the slab we choose. It helps marry the materials we use without being too coordinated," she says.

I'm 5'2" & These Are The "Flattering" Petite Jeans I Swear By

Ask anyone who knows me and they'll tell you I'm consumed with fashion, but you know what makes me want to burn things down to the ground? It's trying to find pants or jeans that flatter my petite height. For reasons beyond my control, I'm in the 5'2" club which makes finding short girl-friendly clothes harder than it needs to be, ugh!

From boot-cut to skinny jeans, I'm picky about what I buy because I've been known to look like a tiny, angry chipmunk who's been forced to wear something against her will. Chipmunks are cute, but I'm sure they wouldn't want to wear anything ill-fitting and I'm sure you feel the same!

The waist area reminds me of Madewell's Superwide-Leg design, but distressed hem makes them look less stuffy. I've purchased ankle jeans before and the fit was terrible so I was pleasantly surprised at how great these look on me!

These light wash jeans are also cropped, but the hem is more straight-forward than J. Crew's version. I usually wear this pair when my household has doctor's or dentist's appointments because they have an air of comfortability about them. When you're on the go, it's important to be able to move around when you need to!

The first thing that drew me to these jeans are their Ecru color. The second is how well they fit when I tried them on in-store. Lengthwise, they stop slightly below my ankles which is good when I actually want to show off my shoes. Sometimes I don't want to go for the oversized wide-leg look so these are always a good alternative for me.

It's true — I'm preoccupied with this style of jeans. Aside from Madewell, Pistola has the best feeling denim I've had the pleasure of wearing. This pair specifically doesn't feel stiff, but they don't get wrinkled either! Also, the hem doesn't drag the ground which is a nice change from the pairs I own that do this.

Here's the thing — skate jeans were popular when I was in middle school. A few of my former friends used to wear them with Vans so I'll always have a soft spot for them. The only thing I don't recommend doing is wearing them on rainy days because that wet feeling on your ankles feels weird.

I never knew the words "cuffed" and "palazzo" could fit in the same sentence, but Ann Taylor's made me a believer. These jeans take business casual to the next level because of their darker wash and overall fit. Did you think I'd really leave skinny jeans off this list? I'm appalled! Jokes aside, I'm not against wearing them and found that I have specific requirements for the leg huggers.
