12 Can’t-Miss Crowdfunding Projects This Month

Now this batch of crowdfunding projects really is all about self-improvement. From a jump rope that tracks your activity to a “smart” yoga mat that ensures your alignment is right on, these innovative, health-conscious projects make staying healthy easier. Of course, there are a few cool inventions for other areas of your life too. Check out a few of our favorite projects below.

1. Apothecary Box: This monthly beauty box subscription is like a next-level Birch Box. All the products are natural and handmade in small batches by independent vendors across the country. So not only are you getting what is essentially beauty couture that your friends will lust over with envy, you’re helping independent business owners. It’s a beautiful thought, right?

2. Jump Rope Activity Tracker: Pretty much everyone knows that jumping rope is a fast way to get your heart rate up and burn some major calories. But just how many calories are we talking here? It’s all fun and games when you’re a kid and on the playground, but when you’re working toward a fitness goal, you need to know. This jump rope tracks reps and calories as well as keeping you on track to meet your fitness goals. Plus, you can challenge your friends using the app.

3. Laser Headphones: Coolest. Earbuds. Ever. These headphones have lasers in the wires that pulse to the music you’re listening to. We’re already imagining all the cool places we could wear these: late-night runs, a silent disco or dancing alone in the dark.

4. Interactive Children’s Book: Kids today are just so darn lucky. Up until now, picture books have remained just that: pictures in books. But the inventors behind the new Goodnight Lad book found a way to make the pages interactive through an app. Parents download the app, kids scan the page and the illustrations come to life on the screen.

5. No-Peel Onion Dicer: Forget crying while you cook; this contraption can peel and dice an onion in five seconds flat. As if that wasn’t enough, it can chop up all your other favorite veggies too. It comes with 14 blades, so however you want to slice your ingredients, this tool can make it happen. If funded, it will go on sale this summer.

6. Halftime Shark Suit: Okay, if this gets funded, Halloween will be a no-brainer. This costume designer wants to gift the masses their very own Superbowl halftime shark suit, or for a cheaper price, the template so you can make it yourself. Seriously, you’d win every costume contest ever with this bright blue number.

7. Smartbed Mattress Cover: Okay, get over the idea of your bed going digital disrupting your sleep. This mattress cover actually improves sleep by logging the amount of REM you get. Another nifty feature: You can set the bed to two different temperatures in case your partner likes it hotter or cooler than you do. See, tech in bed isn’t all bad.

8. Intruder Tracker: We are all for security alarms that alert you when someone might have broken in, but this device is the first one to actually track their every move AND record it on video. Bonus: It’s sleek and small.

9. Indoor Heating Thermometer: If you don’t have central heating, knowing the exact temperature of your apartment or house is really just a guess. This handy little thermometer connects to the heater for a more accurate reading, and it also adjusts the heat when you enter and leave so you don’t have to remember to do it. Take that, ridiculously high energy bill!

10. Smart Yoga Mat: This invention could totally transform your yoga game. First, it detects your alignment and balance, so if you need to straighten up it tells you to do so. It also connects with an app, which logs your yoga time, your strongest poses and the poses that need a bit more work. It’s especially helpful if you’re doing yoga at home and an instructor isn’t there to help you; this mat is like a virtual teacher.

11. Circuit Board Printer: Gadget geeks are going crazy for this one. Voltera is a machine that prints out circuit boards, making DIY electronics way easier. The best part is that it only has one button, so you really can’t mess it up. Voltera comes with a software guide explaining each step and file conversion. Brilliantly, the machine automatically detects places where traces intersect and lays down a mask. It also comes with a bunch of different template boards. Seriously, the inventors behind this project thought of everything.

12. Smart Wallet You’ll Never Lose: This awesome invention ensures that you’ll never lose your wallet again. It connects your wallet with an app on your phone. The little electronic device in the wallet syncs with the app, and if you can’t find your wallet, you just press the alarm button on your phone to locate it. Forgetfulness solved.

I’ve been living in blissful ice cream heaven for the past month. And though I could easily scamper on over to my neighborhood gelato spot or stock up on summer’s best frozen treats, I’ve been lazily crafting my own inside – courtesy of the Ninja Creami.

If you’ve been literally anywhere on the internet recently, you know that the Creami Craze has truly taken over. Everyone from food-fluencers to gym girlies have been basking in its glory – sharing recipes left and right for ice creams, sorbets, and even frozen cocktails. I admittedly thought the appliance was way too good to be true, and resumed my scrolling in favor of FoodTok and ‘fit checks for a while.

I didn’t realize the sheer magic this thing was capable of until I was thoughtfully gifted one to simply try out. Turns out, the influencers *aren’t* lying about its greatness. From my experience, here’s 5 surefire reasons why you need the Ninja Creami in your kitchen.

Reason 1: It's faster than fast.

The Creami gave me that instant gratification I crave from all cooking projects, no matter what I was making. The paddle tears through frozen-solid liquids in a matter of seconds, resulting in a dangerously thick, velvety ice cream consistency. I’m still in awe (and honestly, a tad confused) about how this thing works – because a blender could definitely *not* do what the Creami does. Perhaps it’s the mystery that keeps me going back.

Reason 2: It's hilariously easy to use.

Because all you have to do to form a fantastically frozen treat is freeze it first and press a few buttons. No, really, a literal monkey could operate the Ninja Creami. There were several times since I got the Creami that my ice cream hankering got so strong, I felt a borderline *astral* draw towards my nearest Sonic – but thankfully didn’t need to lift a finger. I remembered the dismally forgotten Creami bowl in the back of my freezer. From there, all it took was a few minutes to achieve better-than-Sonic-level ice cream. Boom.

Reason 3: It saved me a significant amount on my ice cream bill.

This means the demented dessert demon that arises within me every night once Sweet Treat O’ Clock hits was suppressed from spending money anywhere ice cream is sold. I was able to use ingredients I already had at home to batch out my Creami creations – averaging around 3 servings per bowl. A bang for your buck *and* delicious as can be? You simply cannot deny the deal.

Here are the recipes I’ve made so far, with prices for each ingredient included. I’ve also noted the cost per serving, accounting for the average of 3 servings a bowl. A *steal* rather than a deal, methinks!

  • Chocolate Ice Cream: 2 cups Chocolate Fairlife ($4.19 for a bottle, so 2 cups costs ~$1.29) + 2 tbsp Chocolate Jell-o Mix ($1.39 for a pack, so 2 tbsp costs ~$0.70) = $0.66 per serving
  • Mint Cookie Chocolate Ice Cream: Chocolate Fairlife ($4.19 for a bottle, so 2 cups costs ~$1.29) + 4 Mint Oreo Thins ($4.59 a box, so 4 cookies costs ~$0.35) = $0.55 per serving
  • Lite Horchata Ice Cream: 2 cups Dream Horchata ($4.17 for a carton, so 2 cups costs ~$2.08) = $0.69 per serving
  • Lite Horchata Ice Cream with Cookie Dough: 2 cups Dream Horchata ($4.17 for a carton, so 2 cups costs ~$2.08) + 2 pieces Sweet Loren’s Chocolate Chunk Cookie Dough ($6.59 for a dozen, so 2 pieces costs ~$1.08) = $1.05 per serving
  • Dole Whip Dupe:Frozen Pineapple Chunks (I used half a bag, so ~ $1.40) + 1 cup Almond Breeze ($2.39 for a quart, so 1 cup costs ~$0.60) = $0.67 per serving

Reason 4: Healthy dessert has *never* been easier.

Social media has given us an endless stream of easy, high-protein, low-calorie Ninja Creami recipes to try out, so there’s no excuse to *not* make yummy desserts that are actually good for your health. If you’re paradoxical in nature like me (love to eat healthy, but have a serious sweet tooth), it’s time to hop on the Creami bandwagon. The first and foremost reason being this Cosmic Brownie Protein Ice Cream that has 42 grams of protein for only 297 calories. Mind = blown.

Reason 5: It's so customizable.

Whether your cravings fluctuate from chocolatey to fruity, there’s a Creami recipe out there for you. I found each batch to lend itself to customization with the easy-peasy Mix-In button on the appliance. I added Oreos and cookie dough to my creations, but have plans to experiment with my go-to candies, M&M’s and Reese’s.

Major Outer Banks season 4 spoilers ahead.

If you're like me, you've been crying about the Outer Banks season 4 ending since part 2 dropped on November 7 — and there's a good chance you can't stop watching those edits to "White Ferrari" by Frank Ocean. ICYMI, Outer Banks season 4 killed off beloved Pogue JJ at the hands of his high-key sociopathic father Chandler Groff. Some fans are so heartbroken they don't plan on watching season 5, but if you ask me, this one JJ and Kiara moment at the beginning of season 4 actually teased we were always going to say goodbye to him.

There was one Outer Banks season 4 moment that told me JJ was going to die.

  • Outer Banks fans are heartbroken the show killed off fan favorite JJ Maybank (Rudy Pankow).
  • Some fans are too heartbroken to watch the show again knowing how JJ's fate plays out.
  • But there's one moment in the first episode that teased something bad was coming.

The JJ x Kiara moment you might have missed...

    Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix

In the Outer Banks season 4 premiere, JJ and the rest of the Pogues create a whole new life for themselves after finding the gold. They start a business, build a home together, and in a scene that delighted OBX fans everywhere, JJ starts doing a crazy dance on the dock when he realizes they finally achieved their dream. When Sarah asks if he's okay, Kiara points out how he's never had a home, and that he's happy. Growing up with an abusive father figure like Luke could have erased all of JJ's joy, but knowing he has a soft place to land makes him more joyful than ever.

Jiara shares a super sweet moment as they relish in the fact they somehow managed to make their dreams come true. With their arms around each other, Kiara tells JJ she loves him before they share a kiss — but he doesn't say it back.

I immediately clocked this as a potential tragedy waiting to happen. After all, is there anything more upsetting than the "I never said it back" trope?! You know, where one person confesses their love but the other is too shy or afraid to say it back, then something horrible happens and they regret it for the rest of their life. Well, thankfully, JJ got to tell Kiara he loved her one last time before he DIED — Chandler Groff when I find you it's on sight!!

And the one that brought their characters full circle

    Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix

While JJ and Kiara talk about what they'd wish from the Blue Crown (an artifact that, according to legend, grants wishes), JJ seems to look at Kiara's left hand before refusing to answer on the grounds that, if she knows the wish, it won't come true. Paired with the fact he stole a ring from the jewelry store during his episode 6 crash out, fans are convinced he was planning to propose.

But when Chandler stabs JJ and leaves him for dead, JJ tells Kiara he loves her, and that he doesn't need to wish on the crown because he already got everything he ever wanted. I CRIED. It's such a beautiful and heartbreaking moment that brings the character's arc full circle after he told John B. in season 1 he was convinced he'd never get another chance with Kie. Madelyn Cline was right — JJ was absolutely the heart of the show, and although he's the most rough-around-the-edges, seeing him wear his heart on his sleeve in his final moments was the perfect way to say goodbye. Even if his 7-minute memories made me cry even harder.

What did you think about JJ's death in Outer Banks? Well, This Heartbreaking Outer Banks 5 Theory Makes THAT Death Even More Emotional.
