Whether or not you’re a regular Julia Child, this week’s #MakerCrushMonday is helping you bake a sweet treat for your boo and providing the perfect activity for a cozy girls’ night in. Scroll on to learn about full-time mom and entrepreneur of Foodstirs Galit Laibow’s passion for baking, her challenges and her advice for other makers.

First things first, tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m a mom, a wife, a friend, entrepreneur and professional juggler.

Why did you decide to start Foodstirs and how did you come up with the name?

Foodstirs was created from a desire to help busy parents get their children excited and motivated to create in the kitchen. The idea was conceived when I was on a brief maternity leave from my PR firm. I noticed my older daughter expressing an interest in cooking and baking, but when it came down to it, I was overwhelmed. It would always take forever to find a kid-friendly recipe, go buy the ingredients, come home to make the recipe and then clean up the mess we created. Foodstirs makes this entire process convenient, more fun and healthier for families. Our goal is to deliver a meaningful, wholesome and educational experience for children and families.

We hope to build a community of food lovers and makers of all ages. We don’t take ourselves too seriously, so we wanted the name of our company to be hip and fun. Foodstirs is derived from a combination of “Foodie” and “Hipster.”

In five words or less, tell us why you love to make.

Inspiring families and children.

What is a “day in the life” at the Foodstirs office?

A day in the life at the Foodstirs office involves a lot of collaboration. We have a small team, so we are constantly bouncing ideas off one another and deciding which ideas to pursue. Much of what we create happens very organically from brainstorming together, and then taking the necessary steps to make those ideas a reality. However, I think everyone in the office would agree that testing recipes is one of the best parts of the job.

Tell us about the charitable organizations you work with.

We believe that food and cooking have a great power that brings people together. We work with a number of charitable organizations that believe in our mission. Later this year, we’ll be launching our Bake it Forward program, which will inspire families to share the power of food with those less fortunate.

What are some challenges you had to overcome in the beginning of starting your company?

We have a very complex product with lots of components, and that in itself posed some challenges in the beginning. Learning the ins and outs of sourcing, logistics, licenses and production took us some time to master. After learning which systems worked best for our team, we felt as if we could conquer anything and have been able to create a system that delivers a quality product to our customers.

Tell us how technology has changed and supported what you do.

Technology has greatly supported Foodstirs. From being able to interact with our customers through social media to having a very mobile-friendly website that allows our customers to shop from different devices, technology has allowed us to grow in ways that would have been exponentially difficult otherwise. Our goal is to continue to utilize technology to interact with our customers even further with how-to videos that will aid novice chefs in the cooking process.

What’s up next for Foodstirs?

There are so many exciting things to come! Seasonal food crafting kits are definitely on the horizon for 2015, along with great new content, videos and inspiration that will help families to stay motivated in the kitchen creating healthy, homemade food.

What’s one piece of advice you’d share with other makers?

You can still reach your goals if you always take two steps forward and one step backward. Launching a makers start-up is invigorating, but challenging. Don’t give up — remember, everything you want is on the other side of fear.

Hi there! It’s Sarah Sherman Samuel, interior designer and blogger. I recently moved from LA to Michigan, but a couple weeks ago I had to travel back to LA for work, and I got the chance to zip up north to partner with Cambria Estate Winery! I sat down with their winemaker, Jill Russell, to chat about the art of winemaking and the importance of female leadership at Cambria. I often get asked where I find inspiration and one of my main sources is by learning about a different artistry or craft. Nothing can dig me out of a creative slump quicker than delving into a new type of skill, and I did just that with an afternoon at Cambria.

I drove up from Los Angeles for the day, meandering through roads of open fields and vineyards, stopping for lunch in Los Olivos on the way while very excited for the day ahead. I haven’t been alone in the car sans one or two kids for a very long time, or have been able to do anything alone for that matter, so I really took it all in. Arriving at Cambria, Jill had a wine tasting all set up for me, complete with a beautiful cheese plate from Fromagerie Sophie with wine pairing notes, and we dove right in.

After the tasting, Jill took me on a full tour of the estate, and we dove deeper into the history of Cambria and what it is actually like to be a winemaker (and we tasted grapes, played in the dirt, and took a few Boomerangs…as one does).

Cambria was founded by wine icon Jess Jackson and his wife Barbara Banke in 1986. Their daughters, Katie Jackson and Julia Jackson, grew up among the vines and continue the family business alongside Barbara. Jill was hired as winemaker in June 2017 to continue Cambria’s legacy of talented women winemakers. Cambria has strong women in leadership roles and out in the vineyards, and I thought it was interesting to hear that the female vineyard workers were sometimes preferred, as they were considered to have a more discerning eye and attention to detail when harvesting grapes.

So, what does a typical day look like for a winemaker? According to Jill… it is “Busy!”

From Jill: “During harvest, I arrive at the winery around 5:30am, check in with the teams and get to work calling picks, writing work orders for various fermentation activities including punchdown schedules, yeast additions, and so forth. I’m constantly walking the vineyards, checking the crushpad and making sure things are running smoothly for when grapes come in. Post-harvest, it’s all about the tanks and barrels – here I’m tasting wines, seeing how they’re progressing and running blending trials to determine the final blends for our wines.”

I was curious how one can get creative in the wine business since Jill mentioned that it is part farming, part artistry and part science. She explained how her favorite way to get creative is running new blending trials and the freedom of considering, “What happens if I try this? or this?” There are so many variables to get creative with. Her mind is always thinking of new methods or blends to test out.

As Jill talks about what she strives for in her winemaking, I can’t help but see the parallel in the work I do as a designer, as well as the work of other artists and makers across the board. For example, the search for that harmony or balance. I talk a lot about how I strive for balance in interior spaces —just replace flavors and tannins with visual weight, pattern, and colors, and she could have taken the words right out of my mouth. Then when it comes to “energy,” it is even more apparent. I always want whoever experiences my work to feel something, and feel the love and the story behind it. The same goes for the wine of Cambria. Jill wants the wine to make you feel the energy, and know that the wines you drink from them are lovingly made by a team of passionate wine lovers.

As a fan of Pinot Noir,Julia’s Vineyard has this amazing “Santa Maria Spice” as Jill explains, that isn’t the traditional sweet spice you may find in other red wines, but something a bit more savory like Chinese Five Spice. It really achieves that harmony in texture that Jill is so passionate about it! On the other hand,Katherine’s Chardonnay has this beautiful bright acidity and pretty citrusy floral notes. This isn’t your mother’s oaky, buttery Chardonnay (not that there’s anything wrong with those), but it truly tastes like the place. The tour of the estate and vineyards with Jill really illustrated how these single-vineyard wines are able to showcase the terroir they come from in the glass. This isn’t a blending of flavors from different areas, this is Cambria’s rocks, earth, fog, and wind all neatly captured in a bottle.

Interested in getting into the wine business? I asked Jill if she had any advice for someone who thinks he or she might want to work with wine. Her answer was the same that I often give to people interested in getting into design — and that is to just get working! She advises, “The best thing you can do is get a job at a winery, whether it’s a part-time gig at a tasting room or a full-on harvest internship. No matter where you start, you’ll learn so much about the industry and can start to forge your own path in where you want to work whether it’s in the vineyard, in the cellar, in operations, marketing or working with customers.”

When Ruby (Stephanie) finds out her exes are all dying in strange ways, she has to go back through her relationship timelines in order to embrace the future. According to the official Peacock site, this crazy rom-com answers the age-old question of "Is there something wrong with me?" with “Yes. There is. The problem is definitely you.”

“When we started to develop Laid, we were intrigued by the idea of bringing back the old-school, traditional romantic comedy (swelling music! kisses in the rain! Anne Hathaway or someone who is also appealing!), but because we were living in such a dark time (pandemic! industry strikes!), we felt it needed to have some kind of twist,” co-showrunners & executive producers Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna said in a joint statement. “Sure, it could be optimistic and heartwarming and make you believe in love again, but it should probably also have suspense, death, and blood."

I'm obsessed with the title of this show because of its double meaning, too. Not only does "laid" connect to all of Ruby's sexual encounters but it's also a nod to the fact her exes are being laid to rest. So clever!

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups white tea, such asPOM Pomegranate Orange Blossom White Tea
  • 2 cups vodka, tequila, or gin
  • 1 1/2 cups pineapple juice
  • 2 cups orange or mandarin juice
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3 cups sparkling water
  • Lychees and oranges, sliced for garnish
  • Ice

Preparation:

  1. In a large bowl or pitcher, add white tea, spirit of choice, water, pineapple juice, mandarin juice and water.
  2. Stir to combine.
  3. Top with sparkling water, and garnish with lychees and orange slices.

Supplies:

  • Mandarins, such as Wonderful Halos
  • Food coloring markers
  • Scissors
  • Black heavyweight paper or card stock
  • Paring knife
  • Adhesive dots

Instructions:

  1. Draw jack-o-lantern faces onto the mandarins with the food coloring marker.
  2. Cut pairs of bat wings, leaving an extra bit – around ¼ inch – on the flat side to fold back and act as a tab. Add an adhesive dot to the tab to adhere each wing to the mandarin.
  3. Cut pairs of small triangles for ears. Use the knife to cut small shallow slits on the top of the mandarin and tuck in the ears. (via Jodi Levine)
