From “Non-Binary” to “Femme”: The Gender Buzzwords You Need to Know

Allowing people to express themselves however they feel comfortable is one of the best parts of today’s culture. Sharing support for our LGBTQ+ friends and family has never been easier, but with language changing all the time, it can be hard to stay on top of the most respectful words to use when talking to and about queer people.

While we often talk about how to support LGBTQ+ people’s mental and physical health, small things like understanding the various definitions people are using, and understanding what common queer-friendly language means, can be a great barrier-breaker.

Here are some of the most common gender buzzwords you may have heard but might not understand.

Agender: An agender person doesn’t identify as any gender. Agender people fall under the non-binary spectrum (more on that in a bit).

Androgyne/Androgynous: A person who identifies with, or presents with, both male and female attributes.

Aromantic: A person who does not experience romantic attraction.

Asexual: A person who does not experience sexual attraction. People can be either aromantic or asexual or can be both.

Bigender: A bigender person experiences the feeling of two separate genders, like male and female or female and androgynous. Unlike gender-fluid people, bigender folks exist in two states, not a spectrum.

Cisgender: Cisgender folks are the opposite of a transgender person — that is, their gender identity matches their biological sex.

Dead name: This is the name that some transgender people change when they come out as trans. It usually denotes the assigned gender name that they were given at birth, and which should not be used.

Femme/Femme presenting: Someone who presents or expresses their gender in a feminine way. A femme person can be, but does not have to be, someone whose gender was assigned female at birth. The term can also be used for cisgender males who present in a more feminine manner.

Gender dysphoria: This term replaced the mental health diagnosis of “gender identity disorder” in the DSM-5 in 2013 and refers to the feeling of conflict between one’s gender and sex.

Gender creative: A person who customizes their gender expression and identity to include or exclude traditional gender ideals and expressions.

Gender identity: The internalized, personal sense of gender inherent in every person. This umbrella term covers every type of gender expression.

Gender-fluid: A person whose gender identity moves along the gender spectrum and is not fixed.

Intersex: Previously, intersex people were known as “hermaphrodites,” but the word fell out of favor and is now considered derogatory. Intersex people are born with both male and female hormones and sexual organs in any number of variations. Some intersex people are transgender, but some are not, and the two should not be confused.

Latinx: A gender-neutral term to replace Latino or Latina when describing people from Latin America. This can also be used for a group of mixed gender Latin Americans.

Mx.: Mx. is an honorific pronoun used to replace Miss/Mr./Mrs. and can be used for any person.

Non-binary and/or Genderqueer: NB folks experience gender outside of traditional gender roles. They may be male, but present female, or feel that they are any combination of varied gender expressions.

Pass/Passing: This is the ability of a queer person to pass through a straight or binary world without detection. Most commonly used to describe traditional feminine or masculine beauty standards when discussing transfolk, some queers pass as straight, such as bisexuals in heterosexual relationships.

They/their: A gender-neutral singular pronoun. While this can be used for NB people, it can also be used in place of he/she in any setting. Although we’re used to using they/their as a plural, this pronoun can, and always has been, an option for the singular.

Transgender: Trans folk have a gender identity that does not align with the sex on their birth certificates. It is not polite to describe a transgender person as formerly being their assigned gender, as they have always been who they believe themselves to be, regardless of gender assignment.

Ze/hir/hirs: Gender-inclusive pronouns that some people prefer, regardless of their gender expression.

When in doubt, it’s always important to remember that there is never any harm in asking a person what their preferred pronouns are. Some trans folks prefer gender-neutral pronouns, while non-binary folk may not mind being called he or she. Simply ask, “do you have a preferred pronoun?” if you don’t want to offend, and most people will be grateful you asked.

What is Ginny & Georgia season 3 about?

Netflix

Ginny & Georgia follows the titular mother-daughter duo (plus Ginny's little brother Austin) who move from Texas to Wellsbury, Massachusetts after the death of Georgia's husband. But while a new town, a new school, and new friends can be complicated on their own, things get even messier in season 2 when Ginny discovers her step-dad's death wasn't an accident.

And at the end of season 2, Georgia's arrested for murder in the middle of her wedding reception. This was "always the plan," according to creator Sarah Lampert. "How we pitched season 1 and then how we ended our pitch of season 2 was, 'Then Georgia's married to Paul, they're having their first dance, and she's arrested for murder,'" she told People in January 2023.

"I'm blown away that the writers are still able to show us completely new sides of each character, and that's what you're going to see in season 3," actress Brianne Howey says. "You will see a lot of grit and hustle, but in an entirely new way. Georgia has to dig deeper into a part of herself we haven't seen yet. So, she has to use that grit in all new ways."

Who's in the cast?

Netflix

Ginny & Georgia stars Brianne Howey as Georgia Miller, Antonia Gentry as Ginny Miller, Diesel La Torraca as Austin Miller, Jennifer Robertson as Ellen Baker, Felix Mallard as Marcus Baker, Sara Waisglass as Max Baker, Scott Porter as Paul Randolph, and Raymond Ablack as Joe.

How old was Georgia when she had Ginny?

Ransom Canyon might be all drama, but behind the scenes, the cast had a blast. Especially when filming that banquet scene in episode 2, because Josh Duhamel was attacking everyone with bread balls while the cameras were rolling.

"You think like, 'Oh he's a Blue Steel', no," Lizzy Greene tells Brit + Co in our Ransom Canyon interview. "In our big banquet scene in episode 2 while we were shooting, he was rolling up bread balls and flicking them at people. And, like, we're talking in the back of the shots! People would get hit in the hair and they turn around and nothing's there and he's over there giggling, flicking these things. He just wants to have fun."

Keep reading to see Lizzy Greene, Garrett Wareing, & Andrew Liner adventures filming Ransom Canyon, streaming on Netflix now!

But the Ransom Canyon cast says Josh Duhamel's antics helped relieve a lot of stress. "When you're on hour 16 of shooting and you were just like dying and you're like on your second energy drink and then there's someone who's still energized and happy to be there," Lizzy Greene continues.

"There's so much pressure when you're going into this and we know this is Netflix, we're with Minka [Kelly] and Josh and that's big," Andrew Liner says. "And for him to kind of take the edge off for all of us was really gracious and really sweet. So he was a goofball and a jokester sometimes, it helped us feel comfortable and be natural and be able to give a performance that we deemed necessary."

And those performances are definitely memorable. The trio plays a group of high school students caught in a love triangle as they dream of better lives for themselves and their families. And naturally, we had to ask them what their favorite fictional love triangles are.

Lizzy immediately claims Edward, Jacob, and Bella from Twilight, which she describes as "teenage girl heaven."

"I loved it so much. I was a Jacob girl my whole life, whole life until I read all the books and I was like, oh yeah, it's actually Edward," she says. "However, New Moon is amazing and I do wish she would have just at least gotten together with him in New Moon and then maybe they, like, broke up later, but that's my two cents."

Garrett also chimes in with a popular YA series when he brings up The Hunger Games' Katniss, Peeta, and Gale, while Andrew takes a different route.

"One of my favorite movies is Nocturnal Animals," he says. "I think it's a very real — I mean hopefully not that real for you — but I love that one between Armie Hammer, and Jake Gyllenhaal, and Amy Adams."

Netflix

Despite the fact their characters are dealing with some serious drama, these castmates had some quality bonding time while filming. "We all grew up loving Pokemon and we had to go to Target and get all of our groceries and home essentials, and one day we stumble across Pokemon cards and we're like, 'Oh, wouldn't it be funny if we just got a pack?'" Andrew reveals. "And then we got addicted to buying Pokemon cards."

"I'm talking on a level that you will never, we can't even personify how much we probably fueled the economy in Albuquerque and that Target," Lizzy jokes.

Garrett agrees, saying, "If my wallet on me right now, I'd show you the Pokemon cards I have in my wallet. And I made [Andrew] an art piece and collaged Pokemon cards onto this big framed board."

While Pokemon are some cute little virtual creatures, they also got to interact with plenty of cute creatures IRL.

"We had cowboy camp, so we got to New Mexico early," Andrew says. "It ended up being 3 or 4 months of an intensive riding every day, learning to rope, learning to herd cattle, care of them so we didn't look like city kids on horses."

"I love my horse," Garrett adds. "I even got him tattooed on my leg." Talk about a memorable filming experience!
