10 Questions All Soon-to-Be Grads Have, Answered

You’re finishing up your finals, sending thank you notes to your professors, and having one last lunch at your favorite downtown hangout. You’re so close to graduation you can feel it, but your head is also spinning (read: freaking out) with questions about post-grad life. Questions that some of you happened to ask us, and that we got real experts to answer. So, read up and thank us later:

1. Why won’t someone hire me?!!?

Are you just sending one boiler-plate resume every which way? Don’t do that. “Tweak your resume to match each job description. That’s what we’re looking for—that match,” says Kim Myers, a corporate recruiter for TruGreen. And when you get an interview somewhere, make sure your passion for and knowledge of the company comes through. “We want to hire people who are really excited about what we’re doing—and anything you can throw out to show you’ve done your research is great,” Myers adds.

2. Am I better off accepting an internship at an amazing company after graduation, or should I focus solely on the job hunt?

No one likes to hear this answer—but it depends. “If it’s an internship that will lead to other opportunities or a stellar full-time job, take it,” says Hilary Weaver, who graduated in December 2014 and went on to intern for The Nation. “When it comes to your post-grad employment, whether that’s a job or an internship, don’t settle. Do the thing that will ultimately make you the happiest,” she adds.

3. I’m heading to a brand new city. How do I build a social circle?

Assuming you’re moving for a job (congrats!), start with your coworkers. ”I’m so glad I’ve gotten to know my coworkers and their friends, as well as the people I’ve met through industry networking events,” says Celia Ampel, who graduated in May 2014 and now works as a tech and startups reporter at the South Florida Business Journal. Ampel also suggests signing up for group activities, such as a trivia team or kickball league, even if they seem silly at first. “And don’t be afraid to invite people from the different corners of your new life to hang out together,” she says.

4. But is it really a good idea to become friends with your coworkers—or does that just make for an awkward situation?

Like a lot of things, moderation is key. Your coworkers shouldn’t be the only people you see, but if you end up with a few good comrades, consider yourself lucky!” says Chelsea Marion, who graduated in May 2013 and is now a client success manager at Curalate. And there’s also a work benefit, she adds: “Because my coworkers are also my friends, I understand their work styles better, and I feel more comfortable asking questions and seeking help when I need it.”

5. Hypothetically, how will completing a service year or two (Peace Corps, Teach for America) impact my eventual job search?

Think about why you’d want to do a service program. ”If you’re doing it because you believe it has a specific purpose, it will be additive to your search,” says Adena Johnston, an executive coach and leadership development consultant at CCI Consulting. Examples: You want to understand more about a specific country or its economic situation. “If, however, you chose this path because you’re floundering and don’t know what else to do, be intentional about the experience so you can eventually articulate the benefits to a prospective employer,” Johnston says. One way to do this, she adds, is to think of the program as a post-graduate major. ”Employer X might ask you why you chose your major…she might also also ask why you chose a service program,” she explains.

6. Will I feel stagnant — as if I’m not developing in any way — by entering the workforce rather than continuing an education?

According to Weaver, you might find that you learn more outside of a classroom environment. You just have to be proactive about it. “In the real world, you get to be even more selective about your environments, both in your chosen workplace and your other activities,” she says. “Challenge yourself to attend events — seminars, conferences, film festivals — that truly interest you, and you’ll never feel the need to flip open a syllabus again. Instead, you get to write your own.”

7. Is it bad that I’m going to grad school just because I’m not ready to be a “real adult” yet?

Focus less on whether it’s good or bad, and more on your end game. “Ask yourself, how will going to grad school help you reach that point?” says Amy Simons, an assistant professor at the Missouri School of Journalism. If you don’t know what your end game is yet, Simons says to consider the opposite route: “Get some work experience, and then consider returning to grad school. At that point, you’re more likely to know exactly what you want to get out of it.”

8. I’m apartment hunting just as much as I’m job hunting — in terms of rent, how do I know how much I can afford?

Consider your requirements, as well as your restrictions. “I always think it’s best to find a place that’s as inexpensive as possible but still meets your needs,” says Claire Landsbaum, a May 2014 graduate and online editorial intern at New York Magazine. “Use GlassDoor.com or a similar site to estimate your annual salary, and make sure you look at the terms of the lease to find out if your salary is sufficient. Keep in mind that living with roommates is always cheaper than living alone!”

9. Should I try to pick my first job based on a city where I see myself living long-term?

It comes down to your profession’s requirements, says Ashley Stahl, a millennial career coach based in Los Angeles. “We live in a world where networking can happen over coffee as much as it can over the phone,” she says. “If you’re in a field that doesn’t require a professional degree or special licensing hours, the city where you take your first job isn’t likely to impact your chances of being somewhere else long-term,” she says.

10. How do you keep track of your budget?

There’s an app for that! Kathryn Jankowski, who graduated in May 2013 and is now an assistant media planner at Carat USA, uses the Mint app as well as Mint.com.“It’s an extremely easy way to keep all of my finances in one place, and even sends me reminders when I have bills due,” she says. Use it to track where you’re overspending — cabs, Seamless, etc.

One of the deep questions I asked myself on January 1 was, "How do you want to feel as a stay-at-home mom who's also a part of the WFH crew?" The first word that popped into my mind wasn't a full sentence; it was 'ease.'

I've spent the greater part of my life as a people pleaser who also has a Type A personality when inspired during work hours. There's nothing wrong with being ambitious, but I don't always know when to turn it off which leads to burnout. Does this sound like you?

If so, we're not doing this anymore bestie. This year we're changing the way we approach work so we're not on a first-name basis with stress 10 months out of the year. I've got tips from the following bada** ladies who know how imperative it is to not let work drain us:

1. Actually Use Your Planner In 2025

We're not buying pretty planners just so they can collect dust on our desks or coffee tables anymore. Corry Frazier and Melissa Pepin want you to get serious because they feel "it starts with planning." They don't mean the kind you eventually flake on either.

"Effective planning is key to maintaining balance and reducing burnout. Whether you're mapping out tasks, meetings, or events, dedicated time for preparation ensures focus and reduces stress," they say. In other words, "the more intentional you are in planning, the more productive you'll be," according to them.

Ever since I've been blocking out my tasks by hour in planner, I've been able to get more done without feeling overwhelmed by splitting my time between writing and being in mommy mode. Frazier and Pepin suggest that you "set weekly planning sessions" that consist of "30-60 minutes each weekend to map out your upcoming week."

This eventually "reduces decision fatigue, fosters a sense of control, and helps you start Monday with clarity and purpose," they add. Yes, this is a sign that you'll be breaking up with the dreaded 'Sunday scaries' if you follow their advice. "You'll feel proactive and grounded rather than reacting to the week as it unfolds," they agree.

2. Embrace A "Fake Commute" When Working From Home

One of Kayla Baum's tips is to switch up your routine if you're a remote worker. Rolling out of the bed at the last minute before logging on for work sounds appealing until you realize you're uninspired by your days. But, what is a "fake commute?"

"It mimics the structure of a traditional commute to establish a boundary between work and personal life. This could mean taking a walk around the block, doing a 10-minute guided meditation, or even just changing clothes at the end of the day," Baum mentions.

Based on her experience, she's found that "it works because it provides a psychological buffer, helping to separate work and home life." She feels it's "crucial for positive mental health and boosting productivity at work (and at home)."

You can also create a separate work space that's not in your bedroom to get work done! That's helped me tremendously so I'm not sleeping and working in the same area.

3. Focus On High-Impact Tasks

Similar to planning your work days as best as you can, Frazier and Pepin want you to "prioritize the tasks that align with your goals." To minimize distractions, they want you to ask yourself:

  • What is the most effective use of my time right now?
"For instance, if you're preparing for a big presentation at work, concentrate on immediate needs rather than getting sidetracked by unrelated projects. This approach helps you conserve energy for what truly matters," they suggest.

4. Stop Making Daily Decisions Hard

Tasks like your morning routine or figuring out what you'll eat don't have to take up a chunk of your time anymore. "Use productivity hacks, such as pre-planning meals or laying out weekly outfits," suggest Frazier and Pepin. They feel that "small routines like this eliminate unnecessary choices" to "make mornings smoother."

According to them, it's "especially helpful for families juggling multiple schedules." I couldn't agree more because I've spent so many frazzled mornings trying to make decisions about what myself and my toddler would wear or eat instead of planning them. With the help of my fiancé, we've cut so much time in half by being prepared ahead of time instead of 'winging it' before work.

5. Understand What Your Boundaries Are And Set Them

Worried that you'll be considered 'mean' if you tell your manager or coworkers what your boundaries are at work? Depending on your environment, it's 100% understandable. However, you're human and there's no reason you should be over-performing to your detriment. Frazier and Pepin say, "Set boundaries and communicate clearly. Adopt Brené Brown's mantra: 'To be clear is to be kind.'"

They encourage you to not only "be upfront about your schedule to manage others' expectations," but it's also so you can "avoid over-commitment." Say it with me: I will not make false promises just to appease others. Why?

Frazier and Pepin say, "Don't be afraid to say no to side projects or anything that doesn't align with your goals."

6. Ignore Emails Sent After Your Work Hours

I've been guilty of sending an email after work to acknowledge that I saw something, but I never expect other people to feel obligated to respond until the next business day. On the flip side, I've felt pressured to answer something that feels timely and I've gone to sleep thinking about the sender's potential follow-up email.

"Just because a coworker chooses to work late at night doesn't mean you must answer. One helpful trick is to include your working days and hours in your signature, explaining that responses may be delayed outside of those times," Frazier and Pepin say. They even have a prompt you can use if you're not sure what to type:

  • "My working hours are [Your Working Hours, e.g., 9 AM - 4 PM ET]. Please note that these may differ from your local time zone. I appreciate your understanding and will respond to emails during my working hours."

7. Please, log off from work when it's time.

Unless you're scheduled to work late, take the time to log off from work and not think about it until the next day. Baum says, "Commit to fully logging off once the workday ends—no 'quick email replies' or sneaking in work over the weekend." I'm eyeing you Ms. "I just need to send a quick email" while you're on vacation or spending time with your significant other.

Baum says creating this separation works because "fully disconnecting allows your mind to reset and recharge" which ends up "making you more efficient, creative, and focused during actual work hours." According to her, you'll eventually "improve personal well-being" and "enhance long-term work performance."

As soon as my work day is over, I make a beeline for the shower so I can decompress. After that, I take my time with my skincare routine and keep my phone out of reach so I'm not tempted to look at anything work-related. I'm not always successful, but I've noticed a difference in my mood since making this shift.

8. Speak Up When You're Feeling Overwhelmed

And if you're 100% drained because you've been trying to tackle work tasks during and after hours, Frazier and Pepin want you to speak up. "If you're feeling overwhelmed with your workload, approach your manager with honesty and a focus on solutions," they suggest. Here's another prompt of theirs you can use:

  • "I've been noticing that my workload has extended beyond regular hours, and maintaining balance is becoming challenging. Could we discuss prioritizing tasks or adjusting expectations to ensure I can deliver quality work without compromising my well-being?"
What this does is "frame the conversation as collaborative and proactive, encouraging your manager to work with you on a resolution," Frazier and Pepin observe.

Every Gilmore Girls fan knows that Luke and Lorelai were always endgame. Despite the fact they had to watch each other get into different relationships (while I love Max, I'll never be able to stomach the way Christopher acts ugh). But there's one moment in an early Gilmore Girls episode that teases Luke and Lorelai getting married, and even though I've watched it countless times I never caught it before!

Gilmore Girls season 2, episode 3, "Red Light on the Wedding Night" opens with Lorelai and Rory tasting Fran's cakes at Weston's Bakery ahead of Lorelai's wedding to Max. And when Fran insists the girls stay to figure out exactly which cake flavor they like the best, sticking firm to the idea that there's nothing more important than your wedding day, Lorelai doesn't bat an eye when she says, "Well, it ain't Guy Fawkes Day." And TBH, Fran's confused response is exactly how I felt the first time I watched this episode.

We all know Lorelai gets cold feet when she realizes she's not actually in love with Max and bails on him before the wedding. After all, it's definitely more memorable than Lorelai's joke, which I've always taken to be a throwaway line (she really does have a random sense of humor). That is, until @dianaathome on Tiktok pointed out that Guy Fawkes Day, a British holiday celebrating the failed Gunpowder Plot that happened in 1605, takes place on November 5 — the same day as Luke and Lorelai's wedding in A Year in the Life.

I can't believe I never caught this! And I'm not the only one. "I don't know if I'm more impressed that someone snuck this in or that you found it!" one user commented, while another says, "It is Helen Pai and Dave Rygalski's anniversary. [Luke and Lorelai's] original wedding date June 3rd is Helen Pai's birthday!" (Helen Pai is the real-life, albeit loose, inspiration for Lane Kim!)

Now, while this is a super fun connection to find, a lot of Gilmore Girls viewers are realizing just how much they dislike Lorelai's behavior in the actual scene (as in, eating all the cake knowing Sookie was already preparing one). And it's sparked a ton of conversation.

"I felt so bad for [Fran]! She put all the effort and make all those adorable and tasty cakes and the two of them are like “Hehe screw ethics we get to eat free cake!”since Sooki was just going to make one for free," one Reddit user says. "Maybe it’s the service industry in me talking but I can’t get over how annoyed I would be."

Another goes so far as to say this scene is why they "I like to think this is the reason she wouldn’t sell the Dragonfly to Lorelai & Sookie. Revenge."

If Fran's cake tasting really was free, then eating her out of house and home just for fun is definitely not cool, Lorelai. (Although I still think it's not as unrealistic as her showing up to Chilton in a tee and shorts).

  10. Continue this visualization as long as you need. When you feel light and neutral, place your hands in a prayer position and silently offer thanks.
  11. Visualize the light around you returning to its source, and when ready, gently open your eyes.
