10 Beginner Baking Lessons from ‘The Great British Bake Off’

Few baking competition shows offer opportunities for learning moments, but The Great British Bake Off makes room for tips and notes. Because the bakers are amateurs, the judges will frequently talk with them after a challenge about what went wrong and what can be improved. If you’re bad at taking notes, here are a few baking hacks to try in your kitchen courtesy of our favorite big white tent.

1. Let things cool. Always, always wait for your bakes to cool off before decorating. You’ll save yourself so much heartache even if the anticipation is a killer.

2. Time management is everything. Multitasking like a pro is everything if you’re trying to make a multi-tiered cake or multiple baking projects all at once for a big event.

3.Watch your filling ratio. You must to consider the filling-to-cake-to-icing ratios for the most enjoyable bake. Like all good things in life, balance and moderation are key.

4.The drier the fruit, the shorter the fall. When putting fruit into a cake, find a way to dry it before you add to a mix. Otherwise, the fruit will sink — as several unlucky contestants learned in the cherry cake challenge in season one. Toss dried fruit or fresh fruit like cherries in a little flour to soak up the extra moisture before adding them to the batter.

5.Don’t over-knead your dough. Worse even than burning or under-cooking your bread is over-kneading it. Dough that’s been kneaded too much or too long can be flat, hard, and dry on the inside.

6.When in doubt, do the “windowpane test.” If you can see through your dough when stretched out, then you’ve developed enough gluten and it’s ready to proof.

7.Egg wash can throw you off. As one baker learned in season one, egg wash can make rolls appear to be done before they are cooked through.

8.Don’t rush the proofing process. Some bakers feel rushed and will force heat into their dough during the proofing process. Judge Mary Berry says to avoid doing this with certain types of dough like ciabatta, because it can cause it to overproof and then fall flat during baking.

9.Leave room for food to expand as it bakes. Give your cookies space from each other and make room for muffins and rolls to expand. Having your pastries bake on top of each other can cause problems in the evenness of a bake. And then they won’t look uniform when it comes time to decorate.

10.Avoid soggy bottoms. The best thing about pie crust is its flaky and crispy texture. Unfortunately, sometimes fruit-filled pies can make that difficult. If the fruit is overcooked in a pie, it releases too much moisture and makes the crust soggy. Instead, partially bake just the crust before filling it. You also can toss the fruit in a little cornstarch or flour to tie up the water.

Ellen Pompeo cemented her icon status as Meredith Grey on Grey's Anatomy, but she's about to up the ante with her new Hulu show, Good American Family. While Pompeo's most known for her medical drama prowess, this new role is still "dark and twisty" — just like Meredith would like it. From the true story this new show is based on to the star-studded cast, there's a lot to know about Pompeo's first new show since Grey's. Let's dig in!

Here's everything you need to know about Ellen Pompeo's new show, Good American Family, streaming on Hulu.

What is Good American Family about?

Hulu

Hulu's Good American Family is actually based on a true story! This show follows Christine (Ellen Pompeo, Grey's Anatomy) and Michael Barnett (Mark Duplass, The Morning Show) as they adopt a little girl with dwarfism, Natalia Grace, and the dramatic aftermath that quickly follows. From navigating Natalia's disability to potentially negating her age, Christine and Michael end up in a controversial struggle to raise their existing children, protect themselves, and move forward how they see fit.

The official logline reads:

"Told from multiple points of view, as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma, this compelling drama is inspired by the disturbing stories surrounding a Midwestern couple who adopts a girl with a rare form of dwarfism. But as they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, mystery emerges around her age and background, and they slowly start to suspect she may not be who she says she is. As they defend their family from the daughter they’ve grown to believe is a threat, she fights her own battle to confront her past and what her future holds, in a showdown that ultimately plays out in the tabloids and the courtroom."

Barbie Ferreira and Sydney Sweeney worked the Euphoria fandom into a tizzy when Sydney posted an Instagram photo of the duo together. They're all smiles in the photo, which Sydney captions, "as sweet as apple pie." Well, Barbie's all smiles when I bring it up in our interview — and she spills on whether she'd work with Sydney again.

Here's what Barbie Ferreira had to say about that Sydney Sweeney reunion — and if she'd work with her Euphoria costar again.

Barbie Ferreira felt "supported" by Sydney Sweeney at her recent Broadway show.

When I bring up how excited the internet was over her photo with Sydney Sweeney during our conversation for her new movie Bob Trevino Likes It, Barbie can't help but laugh. And as for whether we'll see her onscreen with Syd post-Euphoria?

"I hope so!" Barbie Ferreira tells Brit + Co exclusively. "I love Sydney. She came to see my play on Broadway Cult of Love, shout out. She was shooting in Jersey and then I think she had a short day and called me, and she was like, 'Can I get tickets for tonight?' I had no idea that she was gonna come. It was so beautiful to be supported like that, especially like in a live theater. It was unexpected and I'm just so happy she came to support."

She's also on good terms with the rest of the 'Euphoria' cast.

Barbie, who played Kat Hernandez in HBO's Euphoria from 2019 to 2022, announced her exit from the show after season 2 — and rumors started swirling that a fallout with creator Sam Levinson meant reduced screen time in the second season. But according to the actress, Kat's arc had run its course.

In April 2023, Barbie told Dax Shephard that "both parties knew that I really wanted to be able to not be the fat best friend. I don’t want to play that, and I think they didn’t want that either.”

“I think instead of me kind of lingering around for nine months, I think it was best for both of us that we just ended it there,” she also told The Viall Files podcast in March 2025. “Of course it's hard — I love Euphoria. I love Kat. Kat means the world to me. I mean, I spent so many years pouring everything into her, but it's like, you don't want to ruin a good thing."

She also goes on to explain that “it was a mutual decision" and that "everyone decided that...there was nowhere to go."

“I saw Hunter [Schafer] the other day, I saw Maude [Apatow] the other day, Sydney [Sweeney] came to see my play,” she continues. “Whoever is in town, we always try to see each other."

And you can see Barbie Ferreira's new movie now!

Roadside Attractions

In her new role as Lily Trevino in Bob Trevino Likes It, Barbie Ferreira plays a grieving young woman who's disowned by her father, then forms a Facebook friendship with a man who shares his name. The movie catapulted me back to my 13th birthday when I could finally sign up for a profile, and Barbie also looks on the social media platform fondly.

"It's been making a little bit of a renaissance for me because of Facebook Marketplace," she admits (she loves to sell furniture online). "It's to connect with family and people that you love, that is the best outlet for it. So I think it's actually one of the more wholesome social media outlets. It's not about followers, it's not about who has the most likes. It's about connecting with your friends and family, so I think it's a kind of wholesome we should bring back."

If you're also craving something wholesome, check out Bob Trevino Likes It — it's a real tearjerker!

The 1990s were undeniably a golden era for television that gave us some of the most beloved and iconic shows of all time. From quirky sitcoms to relatable teen series and gripping dramas, they shaped pop culture in ways that still resonate today.

So, while some have already gotten reboots, there are plenty of fan favorites that deserve a fresh take for a new generation. Here are the '90s TV shows we believe are long overdue for a comeback.

Scroll to see the '90s TV shows we totally wanna see come back in 2025!

CBS

1. The Nanny

Few '90s sitcoms had the charm, humor, and unforgettable style of The Nanny, which starred Fran Drescher as Fran Fine.

The series followed her unexpected journey as she went from being a fired makeup saleswoman to the live-in nanny for the wealthy Sheffield family. With her thick Queens accent, flashy outfits, and quick-witted personality, Fran quickly won over the hearts of the Sheffield children and, eventually, Maxwell Sheffield himself.

The Nanny is a nostalgic favorite that still entertains (and influences fashion) to this day. Plans for a reboot series were reportedly shelved in early 2024, but there's still hope for a movie in the future.

Lorimer Television

2. Family Matters

Steve Urkel, the nerdy and accident-prone neighbor played by Jaleel White, stole the show in Family Matters. It's safe to say that anyone who ever watched the sitcom can recall his famous catchphrase, "Did I do that?"

Family Matters portrayed the life of the Winslow family, led by Carl Winslow, a police officer, and his wife, Harriet. It balanced heartfelt moments against laugh-out-loud comedy, thanks to Steve, and a reboot could arguably win over modern audiences again with the right mix of nostalgia and new energy.

Warner Bros. Television

3. Living Single

Living Single was a groundbreaking sitcom for its time that captured the joys (and struggles) of being single in '90s New York. It centered around six single friends, Khadijah, Synclaire, Max, Regine, Overton, and Kyle, and the all-Black cast brought much-needed representation to prime-time television.

Given how challenging it still is to navigate the dating pool, a new iteration of Living Single would feel more relevant than ever. What made this show such a hit was the mix of humor, romance, and sharp dialogue that kept viewers waiting for new episodes every week. A fresh take could include the same New York brownstone setting but with new characters and updated careers.

NBC

4. Wings

Nowadays, workplace comedies like The Office and Parks and Recreation are entertainment staples. Wings helped begin this fascination with workplace-based shows. It focused on two estranged brothers, Joe and Brian Hackett, who started an airline in Nantucket known as Sandpiper Air.

It checked all the boxes, featuring quirky coworkers and the unpredictable adventures of running a niche business. Now could be the perfect time for a reboot, given the lasting popularity of workplace-oriented TV shows, and center around a new small-town airport with the same sharp humor.

ABC Productions

5. My So-Called Life

This show captured the emotional turmoil of adolescence by following Angela Chase, a 15-year-old who lived in a Pennsylvania suburb. It authentically explored the highs and lows of being a teen, like navigating crushes to dealing with family expectations, in a way that really resonated with viewers.

My So-Called Life only lasted for one season, but in today's world, a reboot couldn't be more timely. Modern teens are facing even more pressures amidst social media scrutiny and online bullying, so a new iteration could tackle more modern teenage problems.

Hearst Entertainment Productions

6. Eerie, Indiana

Kids' horror shows that strike the right balance between chilling and entertaining are hard to come by, but Eerie, Indiana, did just that. This series followed Marshall Teller and his family as they moved to the bizarre town of Eerie, where supernatural occurrences ran rampant.

The show delivered Twilight Zone-style mysteries with a kid-friendly twist, and while it was short-lived, Eerie, Indiana, still left a lasting impact. Today, a reboot that mixes humor, suspense, and mystery could serve as the perfect gateway to the horror genre for younger generations.

Castle Rock Entertainment

7. Seinfeld

As a self-proclaimed "show about nothing," Seinfeld truly left a lasting mark. Viewers couldn't get enough as they watched the everyday absurdities that Jerry, Elaine, George, and Kramer got themselves into.

However, the show's finale divided fans after the group landed in jail for their selfish antics. And ever since Seinfeld ended in 1998, people have continued wondering what happened to the gang next and if they just returned to their petty ways.

The actors behind the famous fictional friends, Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards, could reunite for a refreshed (but still cynical) take on modern life that every Seinfeld fanatic would tune in for.

Warner Bros. Entertainment

8. Dawson's Creek

Finally, Dawson's Creek was a teen drama that captivated audiences for six whole seasons. It highlighted coming-of-age struggles, won the hearts of Millennials everywhere, and launched the careers of its young stars.

Rather than a complete remake, a next-generation sequel could feature the kids of the original characters. This setup would introduce a fresh cast who grapples with modern adolescence while still offering glimpses into the lives of the original Dawson's Creek cast.

If there's one thing you can count on in a Sarah J. Maas book series, it's that she's going to give us a lot of memorable, lovable characters. And I do mean a lot. Keeping up with all the ACOTAR characters can be tough when there are so many standout people, which is why I've compiled a comprehensive list of all the characters you need to know before ACOTAR book 6 comes out!

Spoilers ahead for the latest ACOTAR books.

Here's your full guide to Sarah J. Maas' ACOTAR characters.

1. Feyre Archeron

Amazon

Feyre is our leading lady in the original A Court of Thorns and Roses trilogy. After facing death, Feyre becomes a High Fae, and after some time at the Spring Court and Court of Dreams, Feyre reigns over the Night Court with Rhysand and their son Nyx. While we don't have a synopsis for ACOTAR book 6 yet, fans are hoping to see Feyre make an appearance as a supporting character!

2. Rhysand

Rhysand is one ACOTAR character that's very popular with Sarah J. Maas readers. He's the most powerful High Lord in all of history, and after saving Feyre from three faeries, his seemingly careless personality melts away and he helps Feyre through challenges and trials, and they eventually realize they're mates. He currently rules the Night Court alongside her.

3. Elain Archeron

Elain is Feyre's older sister who, like Feyre, becomes High Fae after the King of Hybern throws her into the Cauldron. And it looks like the new book could revolve around her! Because of the war, her relationship with their older sister Nesta has become tense, but they comfort one another in A Court of Silver Flames, which gives me hope they'll get even closer in the future.

4. Tamlin

Tamlin is the youngest son of the High Lord of the Spring Court, and was one of Rhysand's friends as young fae, despite their families hating each other. But after tragedy and revenge, the two end up hating each other. He finds Feyre in the first ACOTAR book after she makes an irreversible decision.

5. Nesta Archeron

Nesta is a classic eldest daughter, and is Feyre and Elain's older sister and Cassian's mate. She's known for being sharp and cold, and she's also the only creature who can carry all the objects of the Dread Trove. Nesta becomes a Valkyrie and becomes the first female to complete the Illyrian Blood Rite.

6. Cassian

Amazon

Cassian's a member of Rhysand's Inner Circle, and serves as General Commander for Rhys' armies in the Night Court. He's also Nesta's mate and they live together in the House of Wind.

7. Azriel

Azriel was childhood friends with Rhysand and Cassian, and is also now a member of the Night Court. He serves as Rhys' shadowsinger and is a part of his Inner Circle.

8. Lucien

Lucien is another High Fae, and is the emissary to the Night Court after serving the Spring Court.

9. Amren

High Fae Amren is Rhysand and Feyre's second-in-command, and is in Rhys' Inner Circle. She also strikes up a friendship with Nesta.

10. Morrigan

Morrigan is Rhys' cousin and his third-in-command, and she also has the gift of truth.

11. Ianthe

High Priestess Ianthe fled to the Continent while Amarantha ruled, and is responsible for betraying Feyre and her sisters to Hybern.
