Turn Any Watch Into a Smartwatch With Glance

Would you switch from classic wristwatch to smartwatch? A lot of us would probably opt for something fashionable over something practical, but a Kickstarter project called Glance by Kiwi Wearables allows you to keep that stylish, traditional timepiece and get all the benefits of a techie watch. Think of it as an accessory for your accessory.

Glance is a small aluminum band that fits underneath your existing watchband. The crazy-amazing tech piece has built-in Bluetooth, along with 3D motion detection and hooks up to your smartphone. And, because the device fits snugly under your wristwatch, you can use it daily without compromising your outfit. So if you want to wear a menswear-inspired watch one day and a skinny ladylike one the next, you can still use the Glance. Woo hoo!

One of the coolest features of this watch involves your television. Let’s say, hypothetically, that you’re not quite happy with what your roommate’s watching on the tube. You can use the Glance to (secretly) switch the channel! Not only can you go from ESPN to the Food Network without touching your remote control (sorry, boo), but you can also respond to text messages, control your computer and track your activity all with this awesome device.

As if Glance wasn’t already impressing the heck out of you, here are some more details that we know you’re curious about. Is it waterproof? Why, yes, as a matter of fact, it is. Glance comes in three strap-width sizes and has a rubberized grip to make it comfortable for all-day wear. You also may be skeptical about the battery life, but have no fear. It lasts around a week on a single charge!

Currently, it’s only compatible with Android and iOS, but don’t worry BlackBerry and Windows Phone users; plans for Glance to work with your devices are listed as stretch goals. The piece costs $70 to pre-order, with a target ship date of October 2014.

Instead, consider yourself stylishly *on time* since you can sport the Kate Spade New York Scallop Touchscreen Smartwatch ($295) that features iconic design touches like scalloped edges and engraved detailing. Released this month and available in three styles — a yellow-gold-tone case with a black leather strap, a rose-gold-tone case with a vachetta leather strap, and a rose-gold-tone case and bracelet — the sleek watch is compatible with both iOS and Android phones.

Just like the Apple watch, the Scallop Touchscreen Smartwatch receives text and other notifications and can download third-party apps. It can also access Google Assistant and track steps, distance, and calories burned all while streaming music with the Google Play app. In addition to the Bluetooth-enabled design, the smartwatch features a downloadable and totally unique “Choose Your Look” watch app. The wearer answers a few simple questions regarding their current #OOTD (think day or night, overall color scheme, and accessory tones) and the face of the watch changes to complement their getup. SO COOL (and V. smart!).

“The kate spade new york girl is connected at all times,” said Mary Beech, executive vice president and CMO of KSNY, in an official statement. “Whether she’s wearing pink, stripes, or dots, our scallop touchscreen smartwatch will match her outfit, tying her look together with a unique kate spade new york twist.”

Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen have more than proven they’ve got major fashion chops, having successfully transformed their images beyond the Michelle Tanner era into bona fide designers. They’ve built a style empire, with their Elizabeth and James collection a favorite among the It-girl crowd for its minimalist clothing and accessories. So needless to say, when the label announced the launch of their new 200 Series watch collection, our ears perked all the way up.

What we love about the 200 Series is how it mixes retro and modern vibes. In true Olsen style, the watch is inspired by the ’70s — or rather, the digital LED technology first founded way back when. The strap is formulated with rubber and features a mirrored mineral crystal face, meaning when the time display is off (just the press of a button), you can use the watch as an impromptu mirror for quick checks. Um, yes. “The 200 SERIES captures our shared nostalgia for the watches from our youth but reimagined in a sleek design,” explains Mary Kate Olsen. Because who doesn’t want to recapture a little of their childhood?

You can cop the 200 Series watch in any of five mirrored metallic colorways including Silver, Gunmetal, Sky, Chartreuse, and Royal, with a white or black strap, for $200 at elizabethandjames.us. Casual and cool, this is bound to be your new everyday favorite, not to mention a stylish substitute for your phone. It’s about time.
