These Were the Top 10 Googled Diet Trends of 2018

If you did some internet sleuthing on a diet in the past year, you’re in good company. With all the information available online, who doesn’t hit up Google to do a little research before committing to a new eating plan? From brand-new apps to ancient eating plans, 2018 was full of some off-the-wall — and some totally tame — diet trends. So what are most people searching (and eating) these days? Here are the top-trending diets of 2018, according to Google’s Year in Search.

1. Keto Diet: Not surprisingly, the diet that tops the list is the one that took 2018 by storm. We’ve all heard about (or quite possibly have tried) the ketogenic, or keto, diet. This counterintuitive macronutrient breakdown keeps carbs extremely low (usually about 10 percent of calories) and fats extremely high (up to 80 percent of calories), with protein hovering somewhere in between. Though it does make many people drop pounds lightning fast, health experts have concerns about its long-term use. Nutrient losses and an increased risk of heart disease can result from too much fat and too little fruits, veggies, and whole grains.

2. Dubrow Diet: When celebrity couple Heather and Dr. Terry Dubrow’s book The Dubrow Diet hit shelves just two months ago, it quickly climbed the ranks to become one of Amazon’s best sellers. (If you’re not familiar, Heather Dubrow starred as a real housewife on Bravo’s reality TV show Real Housewives of Orange County, and her husband Terry has his own plastic surgery show Botched.) Their book outlines a plan for so-called “interval eating” — essentially the same concept as intermittent fasting — with the claim that you’ll not only lose weight but also reverse the aging process. So do an actress and a plastic surgeon make trustworthy diet experts? Some critics have questioned their credibility and the diet’s sustainability.

3. Noom Diet: A diet program based on an app, Noom calls itself “Weight Loss for Millennials.” Noom users log in to an interactive interface that allows them to track meals, minutes of daily exercise, motivation levels, and other measures of health, all while enjoying access to a real-life personal coach. Many have described it as Weight Watchers for the digital age. If you’re already joined at the hip to your phone, Noom could be your ideal weight loss tool.

4. Carnivore Diet: All meat, all the time? That’s the idea on the carnivore diet, made famous by various celebrities and Intagrammers in 2018. Devotees contend that eating nothing but meat has cured health problems like arthritis and depression. But evidence for these claims is thus far only anecdotal, with no major human studies on the effects of an all-meat diet. We chatted with experts for a more in-depth look at the carnivore diet here.

5. Mediterranean Diet: The Mediterranean diet is one “trend” that’s certainly not new to 2018. Based on the traditional diets of people living around the Mediterranean Sea, this eating plan involves portion-controlled amounts of fruits and vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fish, olive oil, and moderate meat and dairy — typically along with lifestyle practices like communal eating and low-intensity exercise like walking. US News and World Report rated it 2018’s “Best Diet Overall” for its solid evidence-based health benefits.

6. Optavia Diet: Medifast is the long-established diet company behind Optavia, a line of food products designed as meal replacements. Optavia takes the guesswork out of what you should eat by providing bars, shakes, and other grab-and-go foods that provide most of your daily diet. You then supplement with one “regular” meal made up of a meat, vegetable, and healthy fat. Optavia’s meal replacements contain very few calories (only around 1,000), so in essence, it’s a straight-up calorie control diet. Check out our take on the pros and cons of meal replacements here.

7. Dr. Gundry Diet: Who is Dr. Steven Gundry, and should you eat like him? Gundry is a thoracic surgeon who claims that our genetics are programmed for survival, leading us to overeat. His book Dr. Gundry’s Diet Evolution explains three phases (“teardown,” “restoration,” and “longevity”) intended to kick-start weight loss and reduce the risk of diet-related disease. The gist by the end: Eat less animal protein, less sugar, and more plant foods.

8. Fasting Diet: In the midst of all the different ways to eat, one 2018 trend garnered attention around not eating, as recent research has shed light on how short-term fasting could help with weight loss. Some proponents claim that restricting your food intake to a small window of hours during the day adds a powerful boost to metabolism. Others believe that, with fewer hours available for eating, you’ll simply eat less.

9. FODMAP Diet: If you suffer from digestive problems like chronic bloating or irritable bowel syndrome, you’ve probably wondered how changing your diet might help. Enter the FODMAP diet, an acronym for the types of carbohydrates believed to cause digestive distress in many sufferers: Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, Mono-saccharides, and Polyols. (Yeah, now we see why they use the acronym instead.) While staying away from foods that contain these carbs may help to curb tummy troubles, long-term adherence can be difficult, since FODMAPs are found in dozens of common foods, including many fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy products. Experts also warn that going without these foods may negatively affect the good bacteria in your gut.

10. The Shepherd’s Diet: The Shepherd’s Diet — where you eat lamb chops all the time? Not quite. Based on a book of the same name by author Kristina Wilds, this diet claims to be a “biblically inspired seven-step system” for losing weight. Taking cues from the diets of biblical figures, Wilds offers weekly meal plans and encourages readers to seek the direction of the Holy Spirit for their health. Reviewers say the Shepherd’s Diet is essentially a high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carb plan not unlike keto. But many users have spoken out about the program’s hidden costs and lack of actual biblical references. Intriguingly, a Consumers Compare analysis showed that over 60 percent of online reviewers gave the book one star.

Scream 6 was one of the hottest movies of 2023, and we've been looking forward to Scream 7 since the credits started rolling! Even though we won't see Melissa Barrera return, I'm super excited to see Neve Campbell return as Sidney Prescott — and it looks like in addition to Friends star Courteney Cox stepping back into Gale Weathers' shoes, we'll also be seeing a beloved Yellowstone universe star taking on a brand new role.

Keep reading for the latest Scream 7 news — and everything you need to know about the cast.

Is Sidney going to be in Scream 7?

Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

Scream 7 Cast

Yes, Sidney Prescott will be in Scream 7! “Sidney Prescott is coming back!!!!” franchise lead Neve Campbell says on Instagram. “It’s always been such a blast and an honor to get to play Sidney in the ‘Scream’ movies. My appreciation for these films and for what they have meant to me, has never waned. I’m very happy and proud to say I’ve been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn’t be more thrilled.”

The actress was not involved in Scream 6 due to salary inequity. "As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to ‘Scream,'" she told Variety ahead of the sixth movie's release. "I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise."

Who else is in the cast of Scream 7?

Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

In addition to Neve Campbell, we'll see Isabel May (who you'll recognize from the Yellowstone prequels 1883 and 1923) appear as Neve's onscreen daughter. We could also see Courteney Cox reprise her role as Gale Weathers, via Variety.

However, we won't see onscreen sisters Melissa Barrera or Jenna Ortega in Scream 7. It was announced in November 2023 that Melissa would no longer star in the franchise following her posts on the Isreal-Hamas war, while Jenna's absence has been attributed to Wednesday season 2 scheduling conflicts.

When is Scream 7 coming out?

Philippe Bossé/Paramount Pictures

Scream 7 Release Date

Scream 7 will hit theaters on February 27, 2026. This is an unexpectedly perfect release date because nothing sends a shiver down my spine like winter (and Ghostface of course).

What is Scream 7 going to be about?

Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

Scream 7 Plot

We don't have an official plot for Scream 7 quite yet, but I'm feeling confident we'll see Sidney Prescott and (hopefully) Gale Weathers take down another Ghostface. Scream 6 co-writer Guy Busick has the sole writing credit on this new script, as well as Melissa Barrera's 2024 movieAbigail.

Is Scream 7 confirmed?

Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

Yes, Scream 7 is officially happening! After Scream 6 (which was released in March 2023) became the highest-grossing movie of the whole franchise, a sequel was announced in August of that year. Kevin Williamson, writer for the original 1996 Scream, will direct.

Who do you hope to see in Scream 7? Check back here — and our Facebook! — for the latest news on your favorite movies.

Even if you weren’t exactly in line for the Olympic gymnastics team as a kid (another reason Simone Biles is so impressive, honestly), chances are, you look back on those days as ones of your peak flexibility. Like running, remembering things, and making new friends, bending gradually gets harder as you age. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to keep your flex! Here’s why you lose your bendiness — and how to get it back.

Why Your Flexibility Stalls

Brit + Co

As though going through puberty weren’t enough of a struggle, it’s also the time when you start to lose your natural flexibility. “No one is more flexible in their life than they are as a child,” says Dr. Leython Williams, a doctor of physical therapy at Athletico Physical Therapy. “However, during puberty, children often become temporarily less flexible. Some children have slow growth spurts, while others grow very quickly. This temporary decrease in muscle length/flexibility is a result of their bones growing faster than their muscles and tendons can stretch.”

Note that Dr. Williams refers to this particular loss of flexibility as temporary — meaning we can’t blame puberty for the fact our toes seem to be getting farther away every time we try to touch them.

Brit + Co

“There is no specific age when we wake up and our flexibility has ‘officially declined.’ However, it is a fact that as we age our flexibility decreases, which leads to decreased functional ability and mobility,” he explains. “As our bodies get older, we lose a small amount of flexibility as a result of the normal aging processes. There is loss of water in our tissues and intervertebral discs, increased stiffness in our joints, and a loss of elasticity in muscles and tendons. In our 20s and 30s, it is important that we develop a consistent static and dynamic stretching regimen to establish and maintain flexibility and range of motion more easily into our older years.”

That’s right: What you do now matters later. And this isn’t just about keeping up in yoga, Dr. Williams cautions. “It becomes imperative that we stretch regularly to decrease our likelihood of various injuries.” Jill Belland, co-founder of Barre Belle, agrees. “It’s easy to feel invincible if you’re young and injury free! Flexibility will reduce your risk of injury: What doesn’t bend will break. Increased range of motion, balance, and mobility are all linked to flexibility and contribute to overall strength and fitness.”

How to Get It Back

Brit + Co

When you’re a kid, flexibility comes naturally; when you’re an adult, you have to take responsibility for improving and maintaining it. “Peak flexibility age for adults can differ person to person and depends largely on their physical activity habits,” says Dr. Rachelle Reed, PhD, Pure Barre’s manager of training development and barre kinesiologist. “Notably, flexibility can be improved at any age when flexibility training is incorporated into a regular exercise routine. It’s important for adults to be strategic about including flexibility training into their workouts, because maintaining flexibility and physical function as we move into middle and older adulthood is associated with better quality of life and independent living.”

There’s no one flexibility standard everyone has to meet, Belland reassures: “There is no golden rule for what perfect flexibility is person to person, but there are simple markers such as touching your toes from a forward fold for hamstrings/lower back, or reaching for your hands behind your back, with one hand behind the head and the other behind the waist, for shoulder mobility. You don’t need to be a contortionist; moving around with fluidity in your everyday life and having good range of motion in your favorite activities without feeling pain or tension is a better way to gauge your own personal goals.”

Brit + Co

But where do you start if you want to improve your flexibility? Dr. Reed explains, “There are two main types of flexibility training that you should aim to incorporate into your routine: Dynamic stretching, where a stretch is performed by moving through a challenging but attainable range of motion several times in a row, and static stretching, where a stretch is held in a challenging but attainable position for a longer period of time (at least 10-30 seconds).”

How do you know how far to go? “Our muscles have a natural stretch reflex that prevents us from going too far into a stretch, which can also cause injury,” Belland tells us. “Aim to gently stretch through this reflex. The key to increasing flexibility is about time under tension: It takes around 20 seconds to ease through the stretch reflex. Reintroduce the stretch and hold it for 10 seconds longer, working up to one minute. The second time you introduce a stretch, the stretch reflex will diminish, allowing your body to get deeper into your stretch and also building better muscle memory.”

Brit + Co

If you’re still worried about injuring yourself — especially if you’ve been injured in the past — Dr. Williams recommends seeing a physical therapist for guided stretches. Belland reminds us that you don’t have to go to the gym or spend hours on stretching. “Stretch a little bit every day when you can fit it in after a workout or in front of the TV. If you just don’t think you’ll stretch on your own, getting to a yoga or a barre class is helpful if you need the accountability of a dedicated time and space.”

Speaking of the gym, just as your phys ed teacher told you, stretching is especially important before and after a workout. “Far too often active individuals begin their workouts without a dynamic stretch,” Dr. Williams says. “Dynamic stretching increases one’s range of movement and blood flow to soft tissues prior to physical exertion and/or sport performance. This type of stretching is vital in improving performance and reducing the risk for injury.”

But you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit — in fact, stretching is an important antidote to all that sitting those of us with desk-based jobs tend to do. “Sitting at your desk all day can lead to decreased flexibility in hip flexors and hamstrings by keeping them in a shortened position for a prolonged period of time,” Dr. Williams warns. “Consider a standing desk or work station or taking several breaks throughout your work day to stand up and stretch.”

Instead of looking back on your kid-level flexibility as a long-ago dream, mix in a little bit of stretching into your new daily routine — especially if you work at a desk! You might never get your legs behind your head, but your older self will thank you for it. Check out The Best Time to Stretch During Your Workout for more!

Designing the perfect home is like self-care. Our spaces are increasingly evolving into our personal sanctuaries as more of us blend our living and working spaces. In 2025, this trend will continue, transforming homes into multifunctional havens: wellness retreats, gathering spots, hubs of tech convenience, and true reflections of personal style. "Creating a personal space and putting your signature on your home to create something unique will be a 2025 trend," says Lily Li, an interior designer from San Francisco's BoConcept. Gone are the generic, cookie cutter designs we see everywhere. 2025 will be all about you and what you love.

Here are top design trends for 2025, according to a recent Home Lifestyles 2025 report from global trend forecaster WGSN, plus our favorite 2025 trends buzzing on the home decor scene!

Keep reading for the top design trends for next year.

Little Luxuries

Lulu & Georgia

Even on a budget, we love to treat ourselves to a little bit of fancy. Think plush throws, high-thread-count bedding, or a curated collection of decadent candles. This trend celebrates everyday indulgences by incorporating small, meaningful upgrades into your home. Statement lighting and mirrors like this Sarah Sherman Samuel Rook Mirror; handmade pottery; even small touches, like gold-rimmed coupe glasses or elegant trays for organizing your essentials, that elevate the ordinary. This is all about feeling sophisticated yet totally cozy.

Individual Expression

Rebel Walls

Individual expression embraces personal style over following trends. More people will look within for their home decor style, celebrating unique, curated spaces filled with meaningful pieces, like vintage finds, DIY projects, and bold color choices. It’s about telling *your* story through design and turning your home into a one-of-a-kind reflection of your personality, passions, and experiences.

Hopping on the curve trend are rugs in 2025. Play with your wooly shapes for a more organic look.

Intentional Design

Design: A1000XBetter | Photo: Michael P.H. Clifford

As more people become concerned about climate change, WGSN expects 2025 will bring more services that help us reuse and repair. Things like refillable beauty products, climatarian cuisine (food chosen based on its carbon footprint), and products and services that encourage DIY, resale and repair will be big in 2025. Choosing quality pieces that will stand the test of time and even incorporating vintage pieces for their uniqueness and sustainability factor will be part of this trend.

Warm Neutrals Paired With Deep Blues + Blacks

Ruggable

Ruggable Laine Ivory & Natural Tufted Rug

Warm neutrals like chalk, oat milk and taupe are colors that we'll see more of for versatile home decor. But don't worry, color will be back in a big way too. Organic greens like kelp and emerald, oxblood, clay, sepia, and terracotta will add some richness while soothing pastels like glacier blue and mellow peach, plus flashes of brights like pink and teal, will also grace our 2025 homes.

Color + Pattern Drenching

Le Mieux et Cie

Color drenching will remain a strong trend in 2025, with bold, saturated hues covering entire spaces for a cohesive, dramatic effect. Layering patterns on patterns will also make a statement, as wallpaper and fabric work together to bring texture, character, and a fresh canvas to your space.

Statement Ceilings + Tile

Rebel Walls

Rebel Walls Bruno Sand Wallpaper

The fifth wall is having a moment, with everything from wallpaper and painted stripes to statement chandeliers adding unexpected flair overhead.

Zen Dens

Crate & Barrel

Crate and Barrel Sogno Chaise Lounge

2025 is all about comfort. Think plush, deep sofas, curvy chaises, and furniture with sweater-like textures, creating cozy nooks and rooms you’ll want to sink into with a good book or enjoy chats with your friends and family.

Sensorial Homes

Design: House of Rolison | Photo by Gavin Cater

WGSN forecasts a rise in sensory-driven decor for 2025, so products that soothe our senses. Think ASMR-inspired products like virtual sound baths to enhance focus, mood-boosting products that align with color psychology, robotic scent diffusers, experiential showers and chromatherapy.

Discreet Design

Kam Idris

Tech and aesthetics don't always play well together, but that’s set to change. Expect more discreet tech products and kitchen appliances designed to blend seamlessly with decor. Look for natural materials, soft textiles, minimalist shapes, and inviting colors, along with clever design solutions that conceal tech — like photo frames that double as phone chargers.

"More and more people are choosing to live in smaller spaces or want to use rooms for multiple purposes. Multi-functional pieces will be growing in popularity, including hidden storage options or transformative furniture," says Li.

Biophilic Design

George Kantartzis

Research shows that plants can actually make us happier, so why not design our homes around them? In 2025, expect to see smart gardens with sensor-regulated watering, furniture with built-in planters, and nature-inspired decor. It's all about bringing the outdoors in, and the indoors out.

Outdoor Glamour

Meredith Kleinman Design

Outdoor spaces are becoming true extensions of our homes, with features like al fresco kitchens, plunge pools, outdoor showers (#goals), and cozy outdoor rugs and sofas made with durable, weather-resistant fabrics for fully functional spaces to enjoy most of the year.
