The Insider-y Celeb Stories in ‘Great Tastes’ Cookbook Are as Luscious as the Food

Sometimes a cookbook comes along that reads more like a novel, where you can’t help but get lost in the heroines’ story. You might pick up Great Tastes ($25) by sisters Danielle and Laura Kosann, for the recipes or the hunger-inducing images by Aubrie Pick. But the gem of this book is snappy repartee that reads like a Wes Anderson movie script between two sisters who are one part Blair Waldorf and one part Jenny Humphrey of Gossip Girl.

GreatTastes is set in New York with jaunts in Los Angeles and abroad and stars the Kosann sisters, who describe themselves as “anti-foodie foodies.” This is to say their obsession with food extends beyond the plate, probing into the fashion industry and celebrity cultures that feed a different kind of hunger. Their online magazine The New Potato begins every celebrity profile with the same question: “What does your ideal food day look like?” The sisters ask themselves and answer that very question in GreatTastes, which is organized around their ideal food day.

Told in essays throughout the book, Great Tastes is all about sisterhood… and their fascinating adventures together. The reader is ushered into the kind of closed door conversations between the sisters and their celebrity encounters. In one story, “the hunk from ‘Game of Thrones’” takes off his shirt during an interview with Danielle, while Laura attends in absentia via rapid-fire text messages. In another instance, they try to remain cool under the pressure of accepting an invitation to an after-hours soiree at George Clooney’s house in Cabo, “with an attempt at the sort of it’s to-be-expected casualness a person might project when asked if they’d like to look at the dessert menu.”

In the book, you’ll find 85 timeless recipes all of which share a minimal ingredient and instruction list with none of them being longer than a page. The inspiration comes from room service sandwiches, pasta at their family’s Little Italy restaurant, and a wedding at Blue Hill Stone Barns. We think an entire book could be dedicated to their Hungarian grandmommy who puts Anthony Bourdain in his place at dinner one night and whose apple strudel recipe will be on your baking short list. The storytelling and recipes in Great Tastes are fresh and fun. Danielle and Laura triumph in sharing exactly what they consider to be in great taste.

Grilled Eggplant and Zucchini with Smoked Almond-Cilantro Pesto

(Serves 4 to 6)

This pesto is vegan and contains a lot of nuts, which makes it a substantial side. It’s really nice with a piece of fish. You could also chop the vegetables and toss them, along with the pesto, with pasta for an easy weeknight meal.

Make Ahead: The pesto can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 5 days or frozen for up to 2 months.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups cilantro leaves and tender stems
  • 1 cup smoked or roasted almonds
  • 1 medium garlic clove
  • 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar or aged white wine vinegar
  • 3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for brushing
  • kosher salt
  • 1 pound eggplant (2 medium), thinly sliced lengthwise
  • 1 pound zucchini (2 large), halved crosswise and thinly sliced lengthwise
  • freshly ground pepper

Directions:

1. In a food processor, pulse together the cilantro, almonds, and garlic until finely chopped. With the machine running, add the vinegar and 3/4 cup olive oil until coarsely pureed. Season with salt.

2. Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. Brush the eggplant and zucchini with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill until marks appear and the vegetables are tender, turning once, about 4 minutes per side. Arrange the vegetables on a platter and dollop with some of the pesto, passing more at the table.

“Healthy” Chocolate Chip Cookies

(Serves about 10 cookies)

After many (many) late nights ordering Karlie’s Kookies (now called Klossies) from Christina Tosi’s Momofuku Milk Bar, we decided that the time had come to attempt our own version (if only to save on the high delivery fees). Nothing can replace those cookies, but these are super-delicious and have healthier ingredients, so they also make a great snack. The egg makes them nicely chewy, but if you prefer a vegan version, it’s okay to leave it out.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups raw almonds
  • 2 tablespoons cacao nibs
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (or 3 ounces dark chocolate, chopped)
  • 1/2 cup dried cherries
  • 1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon virgin coconut oil, melted, unsalted butter, melted, or other oil
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 egg

Directions:

1. Position two racks in the upper and lower thirds of the oven and preheat the oven to 350°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. In a food processor, process 1 cup of the almonds until they resemble a coarse flour, stopping every few seconds to check the consistency. Transfer to a large bowl. Add another 3/4 cup almonds as well as the cacao nibs to the processor and process to a flour. Transfer to the bowl. Add the remaining 1/4 cup almonds and pulse until they are finely chopped, about 30 pulses. Transfer to the bowl.

3. Add the oats, baking powder, salt, chocolate chips, and dried cherries to the bowl and stir to combine.

4. In a small bowl, lightly beat together the oil, syrup, and egg and pour over the dry ingredients. Stir until evenly moistened.

5. For each cookie, pack 1/4 cup of the dough into a measuring cup and transfer to the baking sheets. With wet hands, lightly press down the rounds to about 1/20-inch thick.

6. Bake until golden and dry to the touch, about 20 minutes, rotating the baking sheets halfway through. Let the cookies cool completely on the baking sheets. The cookies can be kept in an airtight container for up to 5 days or tightly wrapped and frozen for up to 1 month.

Plenty of cookbooks claim to be uncomplicated, but after years of demonstrating easy recipes for home cooks on The Chew, Hall actually delivered on that promise. You can find all of her ingredients at your everyday grocery store, and you won’t need fancy equipment like a mandoline slicer or the hottest new blending device. That makes it realistic to whip up three different veggie dishes in one night (as Hall often does), like chopped salad with buttermilk dressing, blackened beans with lemon and chile, and smashed potatoes with mustard mayonnaise drizzle.

Vegetables do compose a hefty chunk of the book, but it’s still full of indulgent celebration foods, like meaty tomato mac and cheese and fried shrimp with creamy comeback sauce. There’s also an entire section on beans and several pages devoted to cornmeal for classics like johnnycakes, cornbread, and grits. And if you can get through the savory section before running to the kitchen, you’ll drool all over the desserts pages, which includes banana pudding, sweet potato pie, a homemade version of Little Debbie oatmeal cookies, and a strawberry cake that smells like summer.

And maybe best of all: Carla Hall’s Soul Food is more than just a cookbook: It’s a history of the cuisine. While it would be easy to believe that her fluffy angel biscuits magically appeared from the heavens, Hall makes it clear in the introduction that her recipes date back much further than her lifetime. She explains that soul food, “the true food of African Americans,” originates from slaves, who relied on seasonal vegetables, beans, and grains as their foundational diet. “For this book, I tried to imagine what my ancestors would be cooking from the farm if they were alive today,” Hall writes. “By looking to our roots, I’m showing you how delicious and healthy true soul food is.” These personal stories, dispersed throughout the book, make each bite just as meaningful as it is tasty.

Gingerbread Layer Cake With Lemon Cream Cheese Frosting

(Serves 12)

Go all out for Christmas. This cake combines the warmth of wintry gingerbread with a lemony frosting that tastes like sunshine. When I made this for my family, my nieces and nephews went crazy over it. It was the best gift I could’ve given them.

Make ahead: The cake layers keep at room temperature tightly wrapped for up to 2 days. The lemon curd can be refrigerated for up to 2 days. The assembled cake can be refrigerated for up to 1 day.

Ingredients:

Gingerbread Cake:
  • 4 tablespoons (2 ounces) unsalted butter, softened, plus more for the pans
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/3 cups packed dark brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 3 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 large egg yolks, at room temperature
  • 2/3 cup molasses
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup hot water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/3 cup canola oil
Lemon Frosting:
  • 2 tablespoons freshly grated lemon zest
  • 3/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 10 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into tablespoons
  • 2 (8-ounce) blocks cream cheese, softened
  • Confectioners’ sugar (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Make the cake. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Butter three 8-inch round cake pans, line with parchment paper, and butter the parchment.
  2. Sift the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves into the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs, egg yolks, molasses, and vanilla. In a small bowl, stir together the hot water and buttermilk.
  3. Mix the dry ingredients on low speed until well blended. Add the 4 tablespoons butter and the oil and continue mixing on low until the mixture resembles fine crumbs. With the machine running, add the egg mixture and beat just until incorporated, then add the buttermilk mixture in a steady stream. Scrape down the bottom and sides of the bowl and mix again just until evenly combined. Divide the batter evenly among the three prepared pans.
  4. Bake until a cake tester comes out clean, 20 to 25 minutes. When you lightly touch the top of the cake, it should feel a little bouncy but still show the indentation of your finger. Let cool in the pans on wire racks for 10 minutes. Unmold the cakes and place top side up on the racks. Let cool completely.5. Make the lemon frosting. Whisk the lemon zest and juice, granulated sugar, egg yolks, and 6 tablespoons of the butter in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat until bubbles begin to form around the edges of the pan, about 3 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium-low and stir continuously with a spatula until thick enough to coat the spatula, about 10 minutes. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a large bowl.
  5. Stir in the remaining 4 tablespoons butter, 1 tablespoon at a time, letting each addition melt before adding the next. Press plastic wrap directly against the surface and refrigerate until cold and stiff.
  6. Beat the cream cheese by hand in a large bowl just until smooth. Whisk the lemon curd to loosen it, then add to the cream cheese. Fold until well combined.
  7. Assemble the cake. Place one cake layer, bottom side up, on a cake plate. Spread one third of the lemon cream evenly on top, leaving a 1-inch rim, and gently press another cake layer, bottom side up, on top. Spread half of the remaining lemon cream on its top, leaving a 1-inch rim; then top with the final cake layer, top side up. You can either dust with confectioners’ sugar and serve with the remaining lemon cream or spread the remaining cream on top. Refrigerate until set, at least 2 hours.

John Lennon will be played by Harris Dickinson in the new movies about The Beatles! Director Sam Mendes confirmed the casts for his Beatles biopics at CinemaCon 2025. “We’re not just making one film about the Beatles — we’re making four,” Sam said at the convention. “Perhaps this is a chance to understand them a little more deeply.”

  • Harris Dickinson as John Lennon: The Beatles' founder and one of the lead vocalists.
  • Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney: pianist, and one of the lead songwriters and singers for The Beatles.

“I’m honored to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time, and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies,” Sam Mendes told Variety.

          “You have to match the boldness of the idea with a bold release strategy,” Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman told The Hollywood Reporter. “There hasn’t been an enterprise like this before, and you can’t think about it in traditional releasing terms.”

          Paul Mescal is playing Paul McCartney in the new Beatles movies, and during Gladiator 2 director Ridley Scott actually revealed the casting last year! When asked if Paul Mescal was starring in his next film The Dog Stars, Ridley told filmmaker Christopher Nolan, “Yes. Maybe. Paul is actually stacked up, doing the Beatles next. So I may have to let him go.”

          While Paul Mescal's involvement in Sony's upcoming Beatle biopic quartet (say that five times fast) has been around the rumor mill, the news is finally confirmed by the movie studio.

The Peanut Butter Protein Granola has a whopping 11 grams of protein per serving – the only drawback here is that people with a peanut allergy can’t enjoy it.

          4. Add protein powder to your morning oatmeal.

          Trader Joe’s doesn’t carry a name-brand protein powder, though the Orgain variety is typically always on shelves when I shop there. The tub they have is actually smaller than most other protein powders you can find elsewhere, too, which is highly agreeable with my lifestyle since I live alone – and don’t wish to spend $30 on protein every time.

          Anywho, I love using this protein powder to ramp up the protein content in oatmeal bowls and smoothies alike. Two scoops delivers 21 grams of organic, plant-based protein that tastes oh-so yummy.
