The 10 Best Hairstyles For Women Over 40, Per Expert Stylist Advice

As we age, our defining features can change — including our hair. This can sometimes mean thinning and adopting new styles to combat a new hair texture and length, but instead of ignoring your evolving beauty, it’s something that should be celebrated and explored. As part of my research to find the best hairstyles for women over 40, I had the pleasure of connecting with New York-basedTim Lehman, a stylist with extensive experience at Sharon Dorram Color at Sally Hershberger Salon. With over 35 years of knowledge in the hair industry, Tim's definitely witnessed this change firsthand.

“In the past, I would see women in their 40s and 50s feeling like they had to adopt a certain hairstyle just because of their age,” shared Lehman. “Now, however, I’ve noticed more and more women in their 40s, 50s, and above getting more experimental and having more fun with their hair.” Below, you can find 10 hairstyles that are well suited for women aged 40 and up per Tim Lehman’s expert stylist insight.

Long Hair + Long Layers

“As we get older, the aging process can cause changes in our hair’s density and texture. Taking care of the hair and scalp throughout your life can help the hair stay healthy and create a more youthful-looking appearance. If the hair is healthy enough to sustain some length, I recommend a medium-to-long style with long layers throughout. Layers give body and movement to a longer hairstyle and can look great at any age. Adding in some soft, natural waves is a beautiful way to switch up this hairstyle,” says Lehman. Luckily for you, dear reader, our team compiled the best scalp scrubs to give yourself some extra TLC along with expert advice on how to approach the process earlier this month.

Blunt Lob

“The blunt long bob, or 'lob,' is a bold, sleek style that conveys confidence,” shared Lehman. “To get this look, the hair should be chopped bluntly between chin and shoulder length. It works great for women of various ages, and the shorter length means that people with thinner hair can also pull it off — just make sure to go back to the salon regularly for a trim to keep it looking polished.” So as long as you can maintain a standing salon appointment, the “lob” is a fun way to experiment with a daring new look without involving dye or bleach.

Long And Slicked Back

“Slicking back long hair is a great way to create an elegant, red carpet-worthy look,” even if your agenda only includes running errands or grabbing dinner with a friend. “It can be soft and subtle (like Michelle Yeoh’s, pictured), or — for an evening out — you can opt for a more dramatic take by slicking the hair back with gel,” offered Lehman.

Choppy Pixie Cut

Photo by Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images

Instead of avoiding their thinning hair as a result of aging, embrace it. “For those with fine and/or thinning hair, shorter hairstyles are a great way to create more volume. I think a short, choppy pixie cut is great on somebody with fine hair. Plus, this haircut is easy to style every day with some gel or texture spray,” says Lehman.

Short With Side-Swept Bangs

Step out of your comfort zone with “a close-cropped look [that] feels modern when it’s paired with side-swept bangs,” says Lehman. “With this haircut, you have some flexibility to style it differently depending on the occasion; it can be slicked down and elegant, or tousled and sexy.”

Extensions

When talking about extensions, Lehman mentioned that “[he does] a lot with extensions for thinning hair, including for women aged 40 and up. The most important thing is to make sure that the hair has movement, and is not stiff.” He continued to share that, “It is also important to make sure that you are taking care of your hair and extensions so that they do not exacerbate hair loss. When done correctly, extensions can be a fantastic way to create a beautiful and youthful appearance.” Long hair isn’t a style reserved for younger generations, and especially when extensions can be installed seamlessly to give the illusion of long locks, even if physically growing your hair out isn’t in the cards at your age.

Textured Bob

Lehman says, “the textured bob is a modern and effortless look that’s super versatile and wearable by women of all ages. To create some more volume in thinner/finer hair, ask for choppy layers.” It’s no secret that shaggy bobs are IN this year!

Romantic Ponytail

“A ponytail is a practical hairstyle that keeps the hair out of your face, but the effect it has can change completely depending on the way it’s styled,” shared Lehman. “I love this elegant and romantic version of the classic ponytail (as shown on Jennifer Lopez, below). The front is smoothly pulled back yet soft, the ponytail is a bit higher than mid-level, and the rest of the hair falls into soft, natural waves. This works best on women with longer hair, or who have hair extensions.” Instead of using a ponytail only to pull back hair that’s overdue for washing, try this lively updo to give the style new meaning.

Shaved Side With Volume On Top

Photo by Dia Dipasupil/Getty Images for BET

Lehman offered that “this style works best on naturally curly hair. It’s such a fun and powerful look. The sides of the head should be shaved or cropped short, with some length and volume left on top. It’s important to note that this look requires some maintenance and styling to pull off, so be prepared to commit to it.” This is the year of embracing your natural curls, so take a chance and get the chop.

Bangs

“Bangs are a fun way to switch things up and update your look,” says Lehman. “I love the polished and professional look of the ones on Christina Ricci below — but if you don’t want to go all-in on bangs, curtain bangs are a great option.” I personally had bangs for a bit and they were the gift that kept on giving; this style looks great when freshly chopped, bohemian and edgy as they grow out into curtain bangs, and whimsical once they reach a face-framing layer length. Talk about *bang* for your buck.

Beauty appointments are at the top of my self-care list, but you there's one question that's always sat in the back of my mind. Do I have bad habits that are annoying to my hairdresser or am I a "good" client? This could stem from being listening to retail horror storiesand fighting the urge to gasp in horror at customers' behavior.

No matter what it is, it's apparent hairdressers aren't a fan of everything you and I may do before, during, and after our appointments. Out of curiosity, I asked the following hairstylists about their biggest pet peeves:

Learn which bad habits you should stop doing if you want to stay in your hairdresser's good graces!

1. Coming To Your Appointment After Being At The Gym

Madison Kinsley/Dupe Photos

I'm thoroughly surprised that people do this because I know how sweaty I get after a workout. But Jorge's had clients who've done this and it's not a good look, according to her. "Yes your service begins with a wash, but seriously," she asks. I don't think you need a reminder, but you might want to take a shower after your gym or pilates session out of courtesy for your hairdresser!

2. Arriving Late To Your Appointment

Most hairdressers have have a grace period for clients because they understand things happen, but that's not your cue to take advantage of their kindness. For Durante, "being late is the primary issue." Want to know why? He says it's because this "backs up all the appointments and creates a domino effect of issues that can often be hard to catch up on."

3. Acting Like An Armchair Stylist

cottonbro studio/Pexels

Hair appointments should be collaborative, yes, but not to the point where your hairdresser feels like you're trying to do their job for them. Jorge says, "The most nerve-wrecking thing a client can do while they are in the chair is constantly second guess what the stylist is doing or changing their minds about their service. Clients need to trust their stylist and not back seat drive every snip."

If you're guilty of doing this, try to be mindful of how this makes your hairdresser feels. They're providing a service, but they're still human.

Jorge also says, "Sometimes, I just want to give the client the scissors and let them cut their own hair. J/K.."

Rene Terp/Pexels

It's something Durante doesn't care for either. "We always encourage our clients to give as many details as possible with how they want their hair to be cut, colored, and/or styles, but directing the service and telling the hairstylist exactly how to do their hair in step-by-step format is unnecessary when seeing a professional," he states.

Should you be afraid to talk to your hairdresser? Not at all, but it's unhelpful if you think you're more equipped to do your hair while sitting in their chair. "We appreciate a client's direction as it is their look, but critiquing and instructing us on how to reach the end goal is beyond frustrating. Quite frankly, we have spent years handling requests and know exactly how to achieve your desired look based on the tools we've gathered throughout the years," Durante adds.

5. Waiting To Share Your Dissatisfaction

Antoni Shkraba/Pexels

Another annoying behavior stems from something we've all done at least once. Durante says, "When completing a cut or color based on an inspiration photo, the client says they "wanted to go a different direction" - but only tells us once the service is completed."

At this stage in life, I realize the importance of communicating with my hairdresser throughout my appointment. People can't read minds so it's something to think about if you typically wait until your service is over to complain.

6. Covering Your Hair Once It's Been Styled

Melissa Romee/Dupe Photos

According to Jorge, it's annoying when "after receiving a hair cut and styling, the client wears a hat or covers their hair." I'm always excited after a hair appointment because it's a chance to enjoy and show off my new refreshed look, but I guess some people feel the need to "hide" their style.

Her other pet peeves? "Washing their hair with a cheap, sulfate shampoo that ruins their color. Going for a swim after a keratin treatment only to dry their hair afterwards and realize a giant frizz bomb where perfectly straight hair once was."

I’ve never claimed to have curly hair. Sure, I’ve caught a little ringlet here and there, but having a full head of curls never seemed like it’d be a reality for me. That was until I found this life-changing curl-defining cream! Turns out, with the proper product (and plenty of guidance from self-proclaimedTikTok beauty gurus), I could rock more ringlets than I ever thought possible.

Read on for my full review of my new favorite curl cream for defined curls!

Meredith Holser

I owe my newfound confidence with curls to none other than the SheaMoisture Smoothie Curl Enhancing Cream, which they claim is their “#1 curl defining hair cream product for thick, curly hair.” It’s meant to reduce frizz, smooth your hair, and facilitate soft, bouncy curls.

I honestly tried this product on a whim, not expecting it to any of those things for me. I mean, I definitely don’t have thick, curly hair naturally. But, knowing I’ve spotted a few curls in my hair here and there, I thought there wouldn’t be any harm in at least giving it a try. I thought it’d be nice to be able to style my hair heat-free, especially in summer. The worst that could happen is I invest a few dollars in the curl cream, and if it didn’t work, I could pass it off to one of my friends!

The Results!

Meredith Holser

My first trial with this curl cream was not successful by any means. I ignored any instructions the packaging had to offer. Call me a rule-breaker!

The first go-around, I had applied a quarter-sized amount to the ends and mid-sections of my hair (post-shower) after it had dried a considerable amount. This was not the move, since it appeared to really weigh down my locks and surprisingly, added a weird texture that felt thick and oily. (Which, side note, shouldn't have come as a surprise since the cream has both coconut and neem oils in it).

The second, third, and fourth trials were really where I started to find my footing with the SheaMoisture Smoothie Curl Enhancing Cream. I slowly found that using a small amount of the product (pea-sized squeeze) worked best for me, especially on mostly-wet hair.

I would part and brush my towel-dried hair straight out of the shower, then “scrunch” the product into my wet locks as evenly as I could. From there, I wouldn’t dare touch a brush again. I would simply scrunch my hair incrementally to guide my curls as they dried, also making sure to push up around my root area for volume. And voila, they stayed in place! I had curly, bouncy, and smooth semi-curly hair.

Meet My Curly Hair Power Duo

Meredith Holser

I can’t give the curl cream total kudos to my ideal curls, though. After my hair would dry a bit using the SheaMoisture Smoothie, I would use a light layer of the amika Smooth Over Frizz-Fighting Treatment Mask to further eliminate frizzy flyaways (of which I have many), and it helped define my curls even further. Might I say, ‘power duo’?

I actually bought a 3.2-ounce tube of the SheaMoisture Smoothie Curl Enhancing Cream fromTargetfor a little under $4 since I wanted to start small and see if it worked for me, but you can also snag a 12-ounce tub of the same product on Amazon for $11 (originally $13, so buying it from Amazon is a better value).

Tips For Using Curl Cream

Meredith Holser

If you don’t have naturally curly hair and want to give this curl cream a try, my best advice is to go very light with the amount you apply. I definitely recommend putting it exclusively on wet hair, ideally after you shower or drench your second-day hair with a spray bottle. From there, brushing or running your fingers through your hair is a no-go, as I found it disturbs the formation of the curls.

Though plenty of beauty trends have come and gone, there are still a handful of makeup products that have stood the test of time. Though you might think these powders, foundations, lipsticks, and more lean pretty“old school,” tons of beauty fans still adore them for their ability to deliver the most stunning looks.

You might just want to give these classic makeup products a second chance after reading what makeup lovers say about their staying power!

Read on for 7 “old school” makeup products that are still total staples in today’s age.

Amazon

1. Airspun Loose Powder

I remember this loose powder being one of the very first makeup products I ever tried after seeing it in my mom's makeup kit. It's super nostalgic for many other beauty fans – and no wonder, because it first launched in 1935!

Formulated to have a "cloudlike softness" to it, this powder is ideal for setting foundation and concealer so your base stays in place.

Amazon

“I used Coty Airspun loose powder for years," one Redditor wrote about it. "I don't use powder anymore, but I still take a fond look at it in the makeup aisle. The packaging is so retro and pretty. It always made me feel very 1950's movie star.”

I will say that the main disconnect between this "old school" makeup product and today's beauty trends is that more and more brands tend to lean toward dewy, natural finishes rather than fully matte ones – this powder definitely delivers on the latter.

Amazon

2. L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara

This mascara launched in 1990 and it was quick to become a favorite amongst beauty fans looking for long, full lashes. Claiming to give lashes the appearance of 5 times their natural thickness, this formula goes on super easy, thanks to the streamlined wand design.

Amazon

This mascara has proved itself a mainstay in many makeup bags, and since its launch, L'Oreal's launched several different colors to play with. I myself am especially fond of the blue and purple mascaras if I just want to get a little playful with my makeup!

"I have tried other mascaras in the past but I find this one is the best for me. I have been using it for years," one reviewer wrote on Amazon. "I now find it difficult to to buy at the drug stores so I order it through Amazon. It goes on easily, dries quickly and does not flake. I wear the burgundy because I have green eyes."

Amazon

3. Clinique Black Honey Almost Lipstick

You probably recognized this one super quick. Clinique's Almost Lipstick in the shade Black Honey is renowned since it's said to be universally flattering and totally nails the natural look! Though it first hit the market in 1989, it's had an undeniable resurgence in the past couple years, further proving its iconic status.

Amazon

“My grandmother took me to a Clinique counter when I was 13 and bought me a lipstick and some eyeshadow. I used them until they were gone," one Redditor reminisced. "The only Clinique item I've used since then is Black Honey, which is in my bathroom today.”

Ulta

4. Benetint Liquid Lip & Cheek Stain

This beloved Benefit product hit shelves back in 1976, though it wasn't originally intended for use on the lips and cheeks. 👀 Benefit revealed that it was actually formulated for exotic dancers to use on their nipples to make them stand out!

Ulta

Since its introduction, it's been a great pick to reach for to add a natural flush to the cheeks and make the lips a bit bolder. Benefit's launched several different shades over the years to join the OG "rose" one.

Amazon

5. Max Factor Panstik Foundation

This "old school" makeup product was one of the first foundations that came in a convenient stick form. It launched in 1947, but you can still find it today! This creamy product is noticeably full-coverage and leaves a silky-matte finish once it's applied. A little truly goes a long way.

“I grew up in the 90s and remember using the Max Factor Panstik makeup. I can still remember the scent," one Redditor wrote. "It was a really great product for its time and I used it like a concealer.”

“I have this! What I like about it is it’s quick to apply when I don’t have the energy for liquid concealers," another Reddit user said. "The colour range isn’t impressive though.”

Amazon

6. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick

Hitting the market back in 1957, it didn't take long for the Lustrous Lipstick from Revlon to become a cult classic. Many shades that the company developed in the latter half of the 20th century are still around today – several makeup fans on Reddit mentioned shades like Cherries In The Snow, Toast Of New York, Wine With Everything, Fire And Ice, and Sandalwood Beige are still their absolute favorites!

"Fire And Ice is one of my favourite lipsticks. It’s a wonderful bright corally red/pink..." one Redditor said. "It dates from the 50s. It’s quite nice to think I’m wearing the same colour as girls who were listening to Elvis.”

Amazon

7. C.O. Bigelow Rose Salve

This might just be the most old school of all the "old school" makeup products mentioned here. This rosy skin salve was introduced way back in 1838 to heal dry, cracked skin in need of hydration – lips, face, hands, and body included. It's crafted the same way it was back in the 1800's, with rose extract to calm irritation, and lanolin, cotton seed, and jojoba oil to moisturize. The company also sells lavender, mint, and vanilla varieties in addition to the OG rose.

Amazon

"I've been using C.O. Bigelow lavender salve for years and still love it. I rub it into my cuticles in the winter, spread the excess around my hands and top it with a layer of hand cream to seal it in," one Amazon reviewer wrote. "It works great to keep my skin from drying out and cracking and the lavender scent smells natural and not fake."

"Love this product! Worth every penny," another Amazon user said. "Use it on my lips, face and hands. Softens and is non greasy. My all time favorite product in my beauty stash!"
