When it comes to Halloween, we’re all about keeping things creative, colorful and, most importantly, quick! Most of us don’t have time to spend hours upon hours on Halloween costumes, so we’ve got a whole bunch of hacks in our costume tool belt. Today’s blast of hackery? The Halloween Witch Costume! Halloween hair hacks and DIY witch makeup take your costume from zero to hero in a matter of minutes. Each of these looks legit takes 10 minutes to pull off, as long as you already have the right key pieces. We hope you enjoy!
We have to admit, this look definitely has underlying inspiration from Elphaba from Wicked. As with most witches, there’s more to her story than meets the eye. So, we’re kicking off Halloween makeup with a gorgeous take on the most classic Halloween character, the witch!
The secret to this look is Ben Nye Creme Color Pods ($7). This stage makeup has been featured in over 400 films and existed for more than four decades. I personally love this makeup because it has amazing pigment but doesn’t feel too heavy or cause breakouts. Oh, and at $6 per pod, it’s also pretty darn affordable.
Now, let’s get witchy with it ;)
1. Start with a natural makeup look for your base so you have a barrier of your normal makeup between the stage makeup, just in case there are any sensitivities to the more intense makeup that your skin may not be used to.
2. Apply Ben Nye Creme Color in Lime Green ($7) all over your face and onto your neck with a makeup sponge, being sure to blend blend blend!
3. To contour your face, apply the Ben Nye Creme Color in Army Green ($7) to the hollows of your cheeks, sides of your nose, temples, along your hairline and along your jawline.
4. Set your entire face with Ben Nye Natural Set Colorless Face Powder ($28). Make sure to tap the brush on to your face instead of dragging the brush, which can mess up the creme makeup.
5. Use a fluffy eyeshadow brush to add an emerald green shadow like the one from the Pop Beauty Sunshine Palette ($27) on the outside corners of your eyes and on the inside corners along the inside bridge of your nose.
6. Smoke out the lower lash line with a charcoal black/gray shadow like the one from the Pop Beauty Sunshine Palette ($27).
7. Add a bright gold shadow like the one from the same palette onto the inside corners of your eyes.
8. Line the upper and lower lash line with black eyeliner.
9. Apply your favorite false eyelashes.
10. Fill in your brows with the Billion Dollar Brow Universal Pencil ($18), making very pronounced and dramatic arches.
11. Use a gold glitter liner for the inside lower corners of your eyes, like the one in the Pop Beauty Sunshine Palette ($27), to all of the areas you contoured in step 3.
12. Now add dimension to the highlights of your face by stippling on a lime green shimmery shadow, like the one in the palette, to your upper cheekbones, bridge of your nose, chin and between your eyebrows.
13. Finally, line your lips with a purple liner and then add a light lavender shimmery eyeshadow like the one from the Pop Beauty Sunshine Palette to the center of your upper and lower lips.
Voila. Witch-ified. Oh, and what about that hat? We know, it is badass! Totally scored this for, like, $5 at the Walgreens across the street.
HALLOWEEN WITCH HAIR
Wooooo, witchy woman! Especially with those purple lips!
Alright, one last curly look with those locks looking wild and witchy. Use a small curling iron to create curls randomly throughout your hair. Then back comb to create volume. That’s it!
DIY HALLOWEEN WITCH SHOES
Hocus Pocus and the Halliwell sisters were a huge influence on our childhood, so the witch costumestill remains one of the most popular ones on Halloween. Considering all the other witches are also probably planning to sport a pointed hat to your Halloween party, you’ll want to do something extra special to stand out. As we all know, details make the difference. Here’s a simple project to make the most amazing DIY witch costume shoes you’ve ever seen.
Materials + Tools:
— old shoes
— magazine or newspaper
— gold spray
— mod podge
— masking tape
— gold glitter
— black glitter
— scissors
— black acrylic
— super glue
— paint brushes
Instructions:
1. Take a magazine page and make a ball.
2. Use the masking tape to secure the paper ball to the shoe tip. Try to tighten the masking tape as you go to create the illusion of pointed shoes.
3. Strengthen the shoes: Use a mixture of mod podge and water to glue some magazine pages pieces onto the point of your shoes.
4. Paint with a black acrylic.
5. Add a sparkly touch with some mod podge and dark glitter.
6. Cut 2 squares from the magazine cover.
7. Paint with a golden acrylic or spray paint and let everything dry for a while.
8. Add some golden glitter to match the shoes and repeat with some smaller shapes and a dark glitter.
9. Finally, use your superglue to glue the squares in place and make a sort of shoe buckle. Voilà, you’re done.
Now it’s time to change the shape of the shoes to make them look more “witch appropriate.” Use the masking tape to secure a paper ball to the shoe tip. Be sure to tighten the masking tape as you go to create the shape of a pointed shoe.
When you like the shape, coat the tape with a mix of mod podge and water like you would paper mache, and let everything completely dry. Then paint with a black acrylic and add a glam touch with some dark glitter.
And now that you have the perfect shape, it’s time to add some details: Cut a three-inch square from the magazine cover, paint with a golden shade and add finish with glitter. Repeat with a two-inch-wide square, but this time use a black acrylic and dark glitter. Lastly, glue the squares in place as shown above and you’re done.
And then complete the look with some striped tights, a black dress and a witch hat, of course!
