10 DIY Moments from the Brit + Co. Halloween Party!

In our opinion, Halloween is a holiday that we’d be happy to celebrate all year long. That’s why we’re already revving up for Halloween 2014! The first thing we’re doing? Sharing all of the awesome DIY moments from our first ever Halloween party so you can take note for next year.

1. Washi Web Dance Floor: What is better than a regular old dance floor? One that is covered with washi tape! We were trying to figure out how to define part of the party space as the dance floor when we remembered our old friend washi. We created a spiderweb design, but you could really do anything geometric.

DIY Photo Booth

Let’s be real for a minute. A photo booth has become a party must-have. We hired a Task Rabbit to man our camera (he also happens to be an event photographer!), and set up a tripod and backdrop right in our office. For props, we printed a few mustaches and glasses, and picked up some odds and ends around town. See the best of the best photo booth pics here.

Super Creepy Bar

We greeted people with a scene straight from our Creepy Party. The test tube wine shooters were especially creepy, but the syringes definitely took the cake. We mixed up Red Bull, vodka, and grenadine to make for a blood-curdling good time!

All Thriller, All the Time

To fill our plethora of wall space, we hooked up our projector to a laptop and played Thriller on repeat. Yes. Thriller on repeat.

5. Costume Contest: You’ve gotta have a costume contest! There were so many insanely awesome costumes at this party that it was darn tough to choose just a couple winners. For the individual contest, this buff Lionel Richie took the prize. And for a group costume, these two paper dolls stood a cut above the rest.

6. Black Light Rave Room: You didn’t think we made all that glow-in-the-dark decor for nothing, did you? We created an entire “rave room” straight from the ’90s with black lights, glow-in-the-dark bugs, and more.

Homemade Treats

Our very own marketing gal Francesca made a delicious collection of blondies and candy bark. You can totally use our bark recipe for holiday treats as well!

8. Dogs in Costume: When in doubt, dress up your dog. That’s all there really is to it ;)

9. Glowing Cobwebs That Look Like Bats: You know when you make something and you think it’s one thing but then it’s something way more awesome. Roxy, one of the frequent DIYers here at Brit HQ, put up a whole bunch of cobwebs on the ceiling, and then they looked just like bats when the lights went off. Awesome!

BOO Marquee + DIY Taco Station

Of course, what’s a party at Brit HQ without a DIY marquee? This one illuminated a taco station from SF favorite Tacolicious.

DJ Celeste Lear: Our DJ rocked! We met DJ Celeste when she rocked out at Re:Make and knew she was just the special sauce needed to make our Halloween party a total dance party. Well done Celeste, well done.

Sugarwish: Trick or treat! Sugarwish provided all of the candy for the party, and we definitely saw a bunch of partygoers treating it up.

Mike DiMo: This Peter Pan doubled as the party photographer all night long! All the photos you see in this post (except for ones from the photo booth, including this one of Mike DiMo himself) were taken by him.

Target: Thanks to Target for pimping out our photo booth with a whole bunch of crazy gigantic wigs.

Griz Coat: Finally, even though Griz Coat wasn’t an official partner on this party, the moment that the Griz Coat founder showed up and embraced in a bear hug with our very own designer Aaron was, in a word, magical.

How To Dress Your Dog Like A Turkey This Thanksgiving

If you follow along on B+C, you’ve seen and admired our canine model, Turkey Temple (one of my favorite pet names, TBH). He is definitely a turkey by trade but clearly not by species. It seems like an obvious choice, but this was Turkey’s first time dressing up as a turkey for Halloween. Spooky season might be over, but it's *always* a good idea to dress your dog up for Thanksgiving if they don't mind!!

I’ve been making a lot of pet costumes this year, but this one has been high on my list for a long time. With some felt and One-Wrap Velcro, we created this pet costume in no time at all. How To Make A Dog Turkey Costume

Tools And Materials:

  • red, orange, yellow and white felt
  • cardboard
  • One-Wrap Velcro
  • pen
  • fabric scissors
  • hot glue gun

Instructions:

1. Draw large, long oval feathers on your yellow felt. Stack the yellow felt on top of the orange felt and cut them both out. Next, draw a curved rectangular shape on the white felt and cut it out.

2. Hot glue the white rectangular shapes to the feathers, then glue the feathers to one another to create a fan shape.

3. Glue a horizontal strip of cardboard to the back of the feathers to help them stand upright.

4. Hot glue a piece of felt to each edge of the feathers and attach a strip of One-Wrap Velcro that is long enough to wrap around your dog’s belly.

5. Cut out a gobble from red felt and attach some One-Wrap Velcro.

Draw 12 long feathers on your yellow felt. Stack the yellow felt on top of the orange felt and cut out your feathers. Cut 12 white curved rectangular pieces to accent the feathers.

Glue the white pieces to the feathers and then glue the feathers to one another into a fan shape.

Attach a long strip of cardboard to the back of the feathers to help them stand up straight once the dog turkey costume is assembled.

Hot glue a piece of felt to each edge of the feathers and attach a strip of One-Wrap Velcro that is long enough to wrap around your dog’s belly.

Draw a gobble onto a piece of red felt, cut it out and glue it to a small piece of One-Wrap Velcro.

Hey Turkey — here’s your turkey costume!

Attach the gobble to your dog by wrapping the One-Wrap Velcro around the collar.

Liz Moore's 'The God Of The Woods' Is An Instant Book Club Fave — & It's Coming To TV

This must be the week of astonishing book news because Liz Moore's The God of the Woodsis getting a TV adaptation! Published last year, the true crime-inspired novel received nods from the New York Times, NPR and PEOPLE. It also landed on our personal book club list, earning a 5-star rating from us.

If you stop everything to watch every "missing person" case that appears on TV, you'll love getting acquainted with The God of the Woods!

Here's everything to know about The God of the Woods series and why you should read the book before it comes out!

What is 'The God of the Woods' about? 

The God of the Woods starts off camp counselor Louise's realization that a prominent camper named Barbara Van Laar is missing. The young girl's disappearance has a trickle down effect that immediately reminds everyone of the similar situation that happened to her brother Bear years ago. It's ironic because everyone remembers how devastating the events surrounding Bear was, but everything isn't as it seems.

Not only are the Van Laars wealthy, they're also well-connected to resources that have helped them spin certain narratives that had damning effects on people unfortunate enough to be in their vicinity. What's worse is there are some people in Shattuck who know more than the family thinks they do.

Why should I read it?

If you binge watched the Ruby Franke documentary, you'll love reading about the mysterious connection between the Van Laar children's disappearance and the effect it had everyone. It's told from various POVs, but the dots connect in such a way that'll leave your mouth hanging open.

Who's developing the series? 

According to Deadline, Sony TV's so impressed with working with Liz Moore that it's greenlit The God of the Woods and The Unseen World "for series development."

Who's producing it?

Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty will be executive producers for The God of the Woods TV series! Deadline also reports they're behind the Long Bright River series that's currently streaming on Peacock!

Has a cast been announced? 

Not yet! But we have a few ideas about who should play a few of the key characters! We'd love to see the following:

  • Sophie Thatcher as Louise
  • Alexander Skarsgård as Peter Van Lar III
  • Stellan Skarsgård as Peter Van Lar II
  • Jessica Chastain or Naomi Watts as Alice Van Laar

When will it premiere on TV?

A TV premiere date hasn't been announced yet, but we'll let you know as soon as it is!

The First 'The Odyssey' Set Leaks Are Here & Tom Holland Looks GOOD

I'm still reeling over the fact that Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey cast includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, and Lupita Nyong'o. Like WHAT! This is going to be the most beautiful movie of 2026 — especially since some of the first leaks from set show Tom Holland "out on the open sea without a single green screen in sight," according to X user @zoerosebryant. And y'all, not only is the scenery gorgeous, but so is Tom Holland. (To no one's surprise).

The first leaks we got of Tom Holland filming The Odyssey feature the Spider-Man 4 actor on a boat in Greece — and according to an extra who was on set, Tom was filming scenes of his character arriving in Sparta.

I'm a big fan of the curly hair (even though I remember Tom said he hated his long hair in Avengers: Infinity War because he felt like Prince Charming), but more than one person on the internet has compared Tom's look in The Odyssey to Elijah Woods' Frodo from The Lord of the Rings, and I can't help but laugh.

We also recently got a look at Tom Holland alongside Jon Bernthal as they hung out in a tent off camera (and without their capes) and again I say: the curly hair is doing wonders for me!

Christopher Nolan and Universal haven't confirmed who our favorite stars are playing (aside from the announcement that Matt Damon is leading the story as Odysseus), but rumors have started circulating that Tom Holland will play Odysseus' son Telemachus, who sets out to find his father and is protected by Athena, rumored to be played by Zendaya. This means my favorite couple could get plenty of screen time together, which is literally all I care about.

The rumors also say we could see Anne Hathaway as Odysseus' wife Penelope, Charlize Theron as sorceress Circe, Benny Safdie as Agamemnon, the king of Mycenae, and Lupita Nyong'o as Agamemnon's wife Clytemnestra. Stay tuned to find out! Until then, I'll be daydreaming about Tom Holland as Telemachus.
