Cover Your Wardrobe in Color With This Easy DIY

In a recent personal search for some statement tops, bags and shoes to kick off 2016, there was one standout trend that kept catching my eye. Fashion’s getting painterly this year, and my little DIY-obsessed heart could not be happier! Bring on the brushes and blending techniques, because we’re making some DIY painted clothes and accessories RIGHT NOW.

Considering the resurrection of all things 90’s AND the fact that I am a product of everyone’s favorite decade myself, this DIY is a little bit Fresh Prince, a little bit Lisa Frank and a lot of fun with brushstrokes. You have no excuses like it’s too difficult or too exact, because this style is BUILT on randomness. Materials:

  • plain cotton sweatshirt
  • plain cotton sneakers
  • plain pleather purse
  • fabric paint in assorted colors
  • paintbrushes

Additional Household Supplies:

  • paper plate
  • sheet of cardboard
  • cup for water

Instructions:

  1. Insert a sheet of cardboard into your sweatshirt so that paint will not seep through.
  2. Squeeze fabric paint onto a paper plate in a variety of colors and dip your paintbrush in.
  3. Lightly brush paint onto the surface of your sweatshirt, lifting the brush upwards at the end to make a sort of wispy tail.
  4. To get a two-toned effect in one brushstroke, load up your brush with two colors positioned next to each other on your paper plate and paint onto your sweatshirt as usual.
  5. Repeat with a few different colors to make your pattern. Play around with different shapes like circles, squiggles and triangles.
  6. Apply this same technique with a smaller paintbrush to your cotton shoes, being careful not to get paint on the white rubber soles.
  7. The same process works for a pleather bag. Just be careful with your brush since the smoother surface is a bit trickier to paint.
  8. Let everything dry completely for four hours and hand wash as necessary after 72 hours.
  9. Grab a plain tee, sweatshirt, bag, shoes or whatever you have and let’s get painting!

  17. If these shoes could talk! Let your shoes dry for four hours and hand wash as necessary after 72 hours.
  18. The same process works for a pleather bag — just be careful with your brush since the smoother surface is a bit trickier to work with. The paint may want to slide around on the surface more than it does on cotton.
  19. You know the drill — let it dry for four hours and then spot clean by hand as needed.

3. Use air-dry clay to make picture holders.

Clay is your BFF for making handmade gifts. This idea from @rileyrosestudio lets your giftee display pictures, memories, cards, or even recipe cards in the form of their favorite food! Go for a trendier take by sculpting an olive or tomato out of air-dry clay, or opt to craft something as intricate as a burger or pizza slice – no matter what shape it is, they’re sure to love it. 6. Make coasters out of air-dry clay and gift them alongside thrifted glassware.

To make some handmade coasters, roll out some air-dry clay, let it dry, and coat it with gesso before you get to painting! The canvas is yours with this gift idea, but here are a few concepts to get the creative juices flowing: smiley faces, rainbows, spirals, initials, and fruits or vegetables. Ensure that your hard work stays in place with a sealant that’ll repel moisture. Some thrifted glassware pieces to give alongside your handmade coasters would be the absolute cherry on top!

7. Create a collage out of old magazines.

Magazines are really not hard to come by, and if you're looking for a sustainable gift, you can find some especially unique ones at re-sell bookstores or thrift stores to make your own collage. Some of the best ones to start with are Vogue and National Geographic. There are a lot of different techniques and themes you could run with, so we recommend doing some visual research on Pinterest beforehand to nail down your collage's concept. Got a necklace you don’t love? Deconstruct that baby using small wire cutters or scissors so that you can use the leftover beads and charms to make something entirely new! If you don’t have them on-hand already, you will need some beading cord, bead clamps, jump rings, clasps, and pliers.

Making your own body scrubs or balt salts is *a lot* easier than you’d think. Some recipes only call for ingredients you’d find in your kitchen! Make a range of self-care products at home, then package them up in thrifted jars with ribbon and a handmade tag to really impress.

10. Repurpose cans and tins by pouring candles into them.

Fish tin candles are in, but you can really use any vessel to pour your own candles in. All you need is some candle wax, wicks, and a scent of your choice to create something super unique! Try your first handmade candle with an empty, clean tinned fish tin, then get adventurous with soda cans or crushed tomato cans to bring out that Tomato Girl energy for your gift recipient.

Chili oil is very buzzy at the moment, but instead of dropping a bag on a single jar, make your own at home to yield a few! Our recipe uses neutral oil, star anise, cinnamon stick, bay leaves, Sichuan peppercorns, salt, chili flakes, garlic and soy sauce.It only takes a moment to make, but you’ll want the mixture to sit for a week or so, that way the nuanced flavors can all sink in. You could even gift a few recipe cards (like these delectable feta fried eggs) alongside a jar, since chili oil is exceptionally yummy on a ton of dishes.

14. Knit or crochet a hat, scarf, or another garment you know they’d like.

Having knitting and/or crochet skills is invaluable when it comes to gifting season. We have a ton of recipes you could check out (I highly recommend the Taylor Swift chai cookies), but if you already have a method to your madness, whip up whatever dessert recipe you have in mind. Just make sure they’re fairly fresh when you hand them over.

If your gift recipient has a green thumb, it’s not a bad idea to gift them a few plant-related things. Luckily, handmade gifts have a stake in this – just grab a terracotta pot (you can easily thrift one or find one for cheap at the dollar store) and some chalk pens, then decorate the exterior however you like.

To get some ideas flowing, you could include illustrated motifs of your relationship with this person, write their name out in bubble letters, or just doodle random designs. Matching their interior design aesthetic is definitely recommended.

Meghan Markle Makes Subtle Dig At Drew Barrymore's "Clingy" Behavior With A Six-Word Remark

Drew Barrymore is undoubtedly an acting force to be reckoned with. Viewers everywhere first fell in love with her when she played Gertie in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in 1982. Then, she went on to star in many other major productions, such as The Wedding Singer, Scream, He's Just Not That Into You, and 50 First Dates.

Nowadays, the 50-year-old is still showcasing her on-screen talents, just in a different way. Back in September 2020, she launched a daytime talk show known as The Drew Barrymore Show.

Over the last four years, she's featured a wide range of guests, from Matthew McConaughey and Vanna White to Paris Hilton, Millie Bobby Brown, and Reese Witherspoon. Drew has also become known for having a more touchy-feeling rapport with her guests, which some people have called "clingy."

This seemingly led Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, to make a dig at Drew's behavior during her appearance on the March 6 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.

Meghan's new show, With Love, Meghan, came out on Netflix the day before. So, she planned to sit down with Drew to discuss her latest project, as well as other topics, including her courtship with Prince Harry and parenthood.

However, some viewers were shocked by an offhand quip that Meghan made during the interview, telling Drew, "I hear you like to connect." She proceeded to soften the blow by taking Drew's hand and claiming her touchy behavior was "so sweet, though."

Again, Drew has a reputation for hugging, touching, and sitting quite close to her guests. Yet Meghan, who has also been called warm and is known to go in for hugs, seemed more reserved and regal.

Despite Meghan's remark and the differences in body language, the pair still delved into some interesting conversation topics. For instance, the Duchess of Sussex detailed how, when she first began dating Prince Harry back in 2016, he made her a vow based on some old advice she'd received.

While Meghan was a college student, she'd worked as a nanny for two different families, and one of the fathers told her, "When you meet your person one day, I want him to say to you the same thing that I said to my wife when we got married, which is, I vowed to always date my wife."

Well, amidst her blossoming romance with Harry, she asked the Prince to make her that same promise. He responded, "I vow to always date you."

According to Meghan, she credits their strong connection to their commitment to treating each other the same way they did prior to tying the knot. In her eyes, holding onto the "good and joy" from the "butterfly period" of courting is what keeps relationships alive.
