DIY These Hanging Leather Planters to Spruce Up Your Home

What’s better than a new fabulous planter to put your plants in? An affordable one you DIYed, of course! So after showing you how to create air plant wall art and copper piping air plant holders, this time we are teaching you a new way to house your plants with leather. Check out the tutorial below for a *super* easy and colorful project.

Materials and Tools:

— tiny cacti

— white leather scrap

— hole punch

— scissors

— yarn

— acrylics

— brushes

Instructions:

1. Adorn your white leather with an abstract pattern. Start with a light color and paint some shapes.

2. Use your flat brush to add some fuchsia shapes.

3. Add gray and aqua touches with a thinner brush.

4. Complete the pattern with some black strokes, and let everything dry.

5. Cut out a cross. Make sure that one of the cross lines is 3 times longer than the height of your plant pot.

6. Punch holes around half an inch from the corner, as shown below.

7. Cut 4 identical pieces of yarn.

8. Attach the yarn through the parallel holes with the ends facing out.

9. Repeat with the other pieces of yarn.

10. Place your plant in the centre of the cross.

11. Hold up all your pieces of string to create your hanging leather box planter, then tie a knot.

First step is all about decorating the white leather with an abstract pattern. So start with a light color and a flat brush to paint some shapes. Next, add some gray and aqua touches, then complete the pattern with some black strokes. Once you’re satisfied with the final result, let everything completely dry.

Cut out a cross that is three times longer than the height of your plant pot. Feel free to use a ruler and a pen to make the process easier, if you want. Next, punch some holes around half an inch from the corner, as shown above. Cut out four 15-inch pieces of yarn and attach the first piece through the parallel holes with the ends facing out. Then, repeat with the other pieces of yarn, as shown above. Lastly, place your plant in the centre of the cross and hold up all your pieces of string to create your hanging leather box planter. Tie a knot and you’re done!

Succulents work pretty well for these planters, because their roots are fairly shallow and they’re easy to maintain ;)

These look great in pairs, so make a couple that can “hang out” together.

If you don’t have a green thumb (even for succulents), fill these with supplies and hang them over your desk.

Try two complementary wallpapers, like a floral and a graphic, for an eclectic look.

Wallpaper Tips:

  • Work with a buddy: Hanging wallpaper on a ceiling can be tricky, so having an extra set of hands can make it much easier.
  • Use a temporary support: For longer strips, you might need to support the wallpaper temporarily with painter's tape until it's actually secured.
  • Consider your lighting situation: When choosing wallpaper, keep in mind how ceiling lighting will affect the wallpaper color and pattern. Make sure to test a swatch by taping it to the ceiling and observing the day and night light.

Painting Tips

  • Paint in natural light: If possible, paint during the day when natural light is brightest. This helps you catch any missed spots or uneven coverage more easily.
  • Start with the edges: Use a brush to “cut in” around the edges of the ceiling, creating a border. This makes it easier to roll paint up to the edges without bumping into walls or light fixtures.
  • Use a pole extension: An extension pole gives you better control, minimizes neck strain, and helps you achieve an even coat.
  • Roll in one direction, then cross-roll: Apply the first coat by rolling in one direction, usually parallel to the longest wall. Then, cross-roll by going perpendicular to the first direction to avoid streaks.
  • Let each coat dry. This is the kind of project you don't want to rush, so let your layers dry before applying another coat. The paint can should say drying times for the best finish!

Less is more when it comes to landscaping. While there’s something charming about old-fashioned backyards — the kind of lush, picture-perfect spaces reminiscent of a bygone era — they can be really expensive to maintain. Here are some of the most high-maintenance backyard features that will keep your garden looking classic, but at a cost. If you’re still into these old-school garden elements but want to avoid the upkeep, consider modern swaps like drought-resistant plants or low-maintenance hedging options so you can relax and enjoy rather spend and constantly maintain.

10 old-fashioned landscaping ideas that are too expensive to upkeep.

Shutterstock

1. Boxwood Hedges

Perfectly sculpted boxwood hedges offer privacy and give a sense of poshness to a garden. However, maintaining them requires frequent pruning, they're prone to pests like boxwood blight, and trimming services can add up quickly. Instead, look for low-maintenance hedges like viburnum, common box, and cherry laurel.

2. Koi Ponds

A serene koi pond with a water feature requires constant upkeep — regular water testing, filtration maintenance, and fish care (including specialized diets, temp control, and vet care!).

3. Rose Gardens

Traditional rose gardens are lovely when maintained properly but they require constant attention. They need proper pruning, fertilizing, pest control, and are prone to disease. Roses are highly susceptible to black spot, powdery mildew, and aphids, making them a pretty demanding plant. I gave up my roses for drought-tolerant plants and olive trees in my California garden.

4. Cobblestone or Brick Pathways

Over time, moss and weeds grow between the stones and brick, creating slippery surfaces and requiring frequent cleaning. Frost heaving and settling can create uneven surfaces here too, which can be costly to repair. Gravel and mulch are low-budget options that can still look great and don't require a lot of upkeep in the garden.

Shutterstock

5. Topiaries

Shaping plants into whimsical topiaries is not for the faint of heart — or wallet. These sculpted plants demand expert trimming, precise watering, and protection from harsh weather. Hiring a professional topiarist can be an ongoing and expensive commitment for more elaborate topiaries, like animal shapes and other artistic sculpting.

6. Traditional Fountains

A grand fountain can be the focal point of a traditional backyard, but keeping it in pristine condition requires frequent cleaning, water treatment, and pump maintenance. Algae buildup, clogged filters, and winter freezing can all lead to costly repairs and upkeep.

Shutterstock

7. Ornate Ironwork

Iron is prone to rust, meaning you'll need to endure frequent sanding, priming, and repainting to keep them looking polished and pristine, which can get tiresome over time.

Pankaj Shah

8. Massive Lawns

I replaced an uncomfortable, and frankly ugly, rock lawn with a small grass lawn for my kiddo and dog to enjoy and my water bill quadrupled! A sprawling, perfectly green lawn is a major water guzzler. Keeping it lush requires constant mowing, fertilizing, aeration, and irrigation. Consider more mulch and gravel than grass.

Wayfair

9. Gazebos or Pergolas

Maintaining wooden structures like gazebos means regular staining, sealing, and repairs to prevent weather-related wear and tear. If made from natural wood, they’re especially vulnerable to rot, termites, and warping. Look for more weather-resistant protection or plant more shade trees.

Wayfair

10. Plastic Edging

Plastic and gardens don't make an ideal match. Plastic edging may seem like a quick fix, but it's often frustrating to install, prone to shifting over time, and can lead to weed crossover and untidy borders. While affordable upfront, its short lifespan makes it a poor long-term investment. Opt for sustainable alternatives that not only last but also prevent microplastics from contaminating your soil.

A Fresh paint color can be the dramatic upgrade you need to fall in love with your kitchen again. Four years ago, I painted my kitchen cabinets with Benjamin Moore's Adriatic Sea, and while I still like the color I'm ready to go more earthy in my aesthetic. "The biggest trend we’re seeing for kitchens and kitchen cabinets is homeowners looking to add more color and turn away from all-white kitchens and gray kitchens/kitchen cabinets," says Sue Wadden, Sherwin-Williams Director of Color Marketing.

Thinking beyond white these days, many designers are finding unique ways to pair color with stone and natural woods. "Lately, I’ve been captivated by the power of contrasting materials and colors to transform this essential room," says Amr Samaha, founder of LA-based Samaha Studio. "In our latest project, we’ve paired the timeless elegance of French white oak cabinets with a striking maroon paint." Here's a peek at Amr's design and several other designer picks for the best kitchen cabinet colors this year.

Samaha Studio

Amr's bold choice of a maroon hue adds warmth and depth, creating a kitchen that is both sophisticated and inviting. Try Farrow & Ball Preference Red No.297, Benjamin Moore Classic Burgundy, or Clare Paint Vintage to get the look. Always test a sample to make sure the color suits your specific lighting situation.

"The maroon hue does more than complement the natural wood — it elevates the entire space, turning it into a focal point that’s as visually stunning as it is functional. By embracing contrast, we’ve crafted a kitchen that not only looks beautiful but also feels like home," he says.

Sherwin Williams

"I love Sherwin Williams Dark Knight," Lauren Reyes says, principal designer + owner LA-based LVR Studios. "We’ve used this for my own kitchen’s cabinetry – it’s not a typical navy blue like we’re used to seeing as it has rich hues of dark blues and greens."

Farrow & Ball

Another favorite is Farrow & Ball’s Joa White, a light and clean taupe. "It's a nice way to achieve a “white” kitchen, but a lot warmer and very sophisticated feeling," Lauren says.

Sherwin Williams

Sue recommends Sherwin Williams'Thunderous SW 6201 for an earthy nature-inspired look. I think this is my pick too! "Dark yet calming, it is ideal for this space since it complements natural elements like wood and metal very well," she says.

Sherwin Williams

Sue is also a fan of the wine-colored trend. She recommends Carnelian SW 7580. "To add some drama and mystery into a kitchen, this deep saturated violet with warm red undertones is a beautiful choice. Although it might seem like a bolder choice, it’s easy to pair with clean neutrals, thanks to its muted tone."

Farrow & Ball

Amanda Leigh at House of Rolison seconds the redder tones for a warm and stimulating color. Her favorite? Benjamin Moore Nicholson Red. "We love coordinating a cabinet color to the vein of the slab we choose. It helps marry the materials we use without being too coordinated," she says.

Amanda's other favorite is also in the greige family, Farrow and Ball's Drop Cloth.

Whearley & Co

If you want to lean more green in your greige, Whearley & Co.'s Cooking Apple Green is a lovely neutral with a bit more tint.

Sherwin Williams

Sue adds to her fave list Sherwin Williams Color of the Year for 2024: Upward SW 6239. "This light and breezy blue that creates a beautiful coastal chic vibe to an all-white kitchen. Homeowners can take this aesthetic one step further by adding wooden accents to the space."

Theresa Butler Interiors, Marc Mauldin

Theresa Butler, principal and founder of Theresa Butler Interiors in Atlanta recently refreshed a 15-year-old kitchen with its original cabinets using Benjamin Moore Advance Paint in Marine Blue (on island) and London Fog (in cabinets).

Theresa Butler Interiors, Marc Mauldin

Theresa also used Benjamin Moore White Dove to refresh this traditional kitchen.

Benjamin Moore

Theresa also recommends Benjamin Moore Stratton Blue (a muted blue-green shown above), a soothing Ocean Air, and Peale Green, an earthy forest green, for kitchen cabinets. Love the idea of forest green too!

Lowe's

Something in the Ocean Air family is the Tranquil Waters Tintable Cabinet Paint from Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines.

Lily Collins and husband Charlie McDowell are officially parents! The Emily in Paris actress shocked fans when she shared the happy news of their first child in a touching Instagram post on Friday, January 31, 2025. The couple, who have been together since 2019, also revealed in the post their baby was born via surrogate.

Keep reading for everything we know so far about this joyful news!

Lily Collins Shares A Loving Family Update

Instagram/lilyjcollins

It looks like we're not the only ones celebrating Valentine's Day because Lily Collins just shared the sweetest family update on Instagram! The new mom snapped a cute picture of herself, husband Chris McDowell, their family doggo Redford, and Baby Tove in what can be described as a love pile.

Seriously, just look at their little Redford's proximity to Tove and the cute paw on Lily's shoulder? Nothing could feel more precious than that moment and it seems Lily agrees because her caption reads, "I truly can’t imagine feeling more love. Valentine’s Day (and every day) just got a whole lot sweeter…"

Lily Collins and Charlie McDowell Instagram Baby Announcement

Instagram/lilyjcollins

On January 31, 2025, the couple wrote in a joint post on Instagram: "Welcome to the center of our world Tove Jane McDowell. Words will never express our endless gratitude for our incredible surrogate and everyone who helped us along the way. We love you to the moon and back again..." The accompanying photo shows sweet baby Tove bundled up with a monogrammed blanket nearby and (likely) Lily Collins' hand resting on the baby. How cute is the floral knit bonnet on Tove?!

And after receiving a slew of intense messages, Charlie McDowell commented on the post on February 1. "Thank you for all the kind messages and love. We are overjoyed and very grateful," he says. "In regards to the unkind messages about surrogacy and our path to having a baby — it’s ok to not be an expert on surrogacy. It’s ok to not know why someone might need a surrogate to have a child. It’s ok to not know the motivations of a surrogate regardless of what you assume. And it’s ok to spend less time spewing hateful words into the world, especially in regards to a beautiful baby girl who has brought a lot of love into people’s lives. That’s all for now because she just pooped and I need to change her diaper."

What does the name "Tove" mean?

The baby's name is a beautiful and distinctive choice. While the couple hasn't publicly shared the inspiration behind the name, fans are already speculating about its meaning and origin. The name Tove has origins in Scandinavia and is traditionally a girl's name that can mean "beautiful" or "beloved." It may also have Hebrew origins meaning "good."

Who is Lily Collins' Husband Charlie McDowell?

Lily Collins and Charlie McDowell aren't shy about sharing their adoration for one another on social media. The two have been public with their relationship since 2019, and got married in 2021. Charlie McDowell is a Los Angeles-based director, producer, and screenwriter. The pair met on the set of Gilded Rage, a movie he directed and she acted in.

Congratulations to the happy family! We couldn't be more thrilled for Lily and Charlie as they embark on this exciting new chapter. Check back for more updates as this is a breaking story.

The Motherload: Episodes from the Brink of Motherhood by Sarah Hoover

Sarah Hoover's recollections about motherhood prove that not everyone has a euphoric experience that begins with them proclaiming how perfect their baby is. Her problem is that she expected her journey to look like that and faced a range of emotions when she saw how different things felt for her. She had the amazing job, husband, and friendships, but it felt like she was losing herself all for the sake of being a mother. Once she understood she was in the middle of postpartum depression, Hoover was able to start accepting her new normal one day at a time.
In her mind, The Motherload: Episodes from the Brink of Motherhood isn't meant to scare anyone or dish about the horrid nature of motherhood. It's a powerfully honest (and sometimes hilarious) book that seeks to normalize what some mothers are afraid to talk about.
