The Busy Person’s Guide to Making Healthy Lifestyle Changes That Stick

Making the healthy lifestyle shift to eating better, getting more sleep or exercising is HARD. We had the pleasure of speaking with Jo Bartell — a registered dietician from Rise — to get an expert’s advice on making these changes stick, even for busy folks on a budget. She sat down and talked with us about everything from how to get started to tools for success to whether or not we really need those eight glasses of water a day.

How to Get Started

According to Bartell, simply getting started with a healthy lifestyle shift can be the hardest part. But she said it’s best to break it down into three broad, yet equally important categories: eating well, working out and catching more Zzzzs. For a sustainable approach, making small changes in each category you’re looking to improve is the best way to go. It totally makes sense, right? We’ve probably all had those times when we’ve gone all out with a new exercise program and burned out (or got injured) early on in the process, putting a halt in our BIG plans. Bartell says it is important to take things one step at a time.

Bartell also recommends writing down your goals and scheduling appointments for everything from eating meals to a gym sesh and even your bedtime. Beyond getting things in writing, though, consider setting alarms or automated calendar reminders just like you would for important work-related activities.

Healthy Eating on the Go

We’ve all had those times when hunger strikes and we’re caught without a healthy, homemade snack in our bag or desk drawer. Believe it or not, even healthier options can be found in a package. Bartell suggests that we get in the habit of reading nutritional labels at our local convenience store, opting out of those items high in sodium, fat or containing trans-fats. Also, if you (1) can’t pronounce an ingredient or (2) don’t know what it is, those are two indicators that the snack should stay on the shelf. Pretty easy rules to live by, right? Another great tip from Bartell that works especially well on road trips is to make your own DIY trail mix out of convenience-store goods — all you need is a small box of your fave cereal, roasted unsalted nuts and dried fruit. Those items that deliver a duo of fiber and some protein will provide a bit more staying power for your buck.

While those busy times are unavoidable, Bartell notes that planning ahead is always going to be your best bet. When you have a few hours free, getting veggies and lean protein prepped and throwing together a big batch of soup, will set you up for success throughout the week. Strategies for Dining Out

Dining out on vacation, business meetings, dates or even when you just don’t have time to cook doesn’t have to derail your clean eating. For starters, Bartell cautions us against showing up super hungry, because doing so will up your odds of overeating or choosing something not so nutritious. Beyond that, if you know the restaurant ahead of time, take a peek at the menu and decide what you’ll order in advance. (And if you’re working with a Rise nutritionist, you can even send them the menu for suggestions!)

As far as ordering goes, Bartell has some more great advice for us. She recommends starting your meal with a broth-based soup, salad or other non-fried veggie; you’ll sneak in a nice dose of nutrients and fill up a bit before your entree arrives. As for your main course, consider ordering two appetizers — one veggie-based, the other centered on protein. They’re not only smaller, but will also give you a chance to try a few more flavors, staving off that taste-bud boredom. Also, don’t be afraid to be (politely) assertive by asking your server about ingredients (butter, sauce, cheese and dressing are often snuck in), and then requesting subs (like brown rice instead of white) or for the “extras” to be served on the side. This three-pronged approach seems pretty manageable to us.

What About Water?

Though it sounds daunting, Bartell confirmed that the eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day still stands, and is one of the best things we can do for our bodies. Water not only plays an important role in flushing out toxins, but also helps to keep you sated — given how often thirst is mistaken for hunger, that totally makes sense. Buying a cute, fashionable water bottle that you can carry around with you can be a big help in achieving this goal.

To make H20 more fun (and drinkable), infuse a pitcher of the cold stuff with fruit or herbs to make your very own “spa” water. Also, sparkling water is another great choice, especially for those folks who crave the fizz of soda. Whatever you reach for, take a peek at the label. According to Bartell, generally anything sugar- (this includes artificial sweeteners), calorie- and caffeine-free is a great contender for meeting your daily quota.

Other Budget-Friendly Tools

Even if you’re not ready to sign up for sessions with a nutritionist, Bartell stressed that getting an idea of where you are now with your habits is essential for making the right informed changes. Grab a notebook or keep tabs on your phone by jotting down your food consumption for three to seven days. After that, you’ll get a better sense of when you’re hungry and why you’re eating. For a higher-tech approach, free websites or apps like My Fitness Pal and Lose It! can provide you with more precise, numbers-driven information.

A Complete Unknown finally rolls into theaters on Christmas Day (you know..like a rolling stone?) but the cast is already generating serious buzz. Timothée Chalamet snagged a Golden Globe nomination for his portrayal of Bob Dylan, while Monica Barbaro just won the Astra Film Awards' Breakthrough Performer Award. But when I sat down with the actress, I couldn't help but go all the way back to the first day of filming the December movie.

Here's what A Complete Unknown's Monica Barbaro had to say about meeting Timothée Chalamet and learning guitar for the role of Joan Baez.

Monica revealed in a Rolling Stone interview that she met Timothée Chalamet a week before filming — and that he was already more-or-less in character. "The first time we met was a music rehearsal," she tells Brit + Co exclusively. "So we just really launched right into it, which was nice because I admired his work so much from afar and any level of intimidation that I may have had, I could just sort of funnel into music prep, which was great."

"It was a beautiful experience of getting to hear our voices harmonize as these characters and hear the accompaniment of our guitars," she continues. "And we were able to kind of like anchor ourselves in the music and have sort of a meeting of minds that was maybe a little more similar to Joan and Bob because they met in the music scene as already very proficient musicians. So that was a beautiful magical day. And then we like launched right into filming."

Monica Barbaro (who you'll recognize from Top Gun2) stars as musician Joan Baez, and even though Monica had to learn how to play guitar for the role, you'd never guess just by watching the film. She carries herself with such confidence and ease that I'd have believed she'd been playing her whole life. And the fact her voice sounds like a Disney princess is just the cherry on top.

"I'm not a singer, I didn't play guitar," she says. "So there was sort of this introductory level thing going on where I just had to figure out how to form my hands and in some way, I thought about how she might have done that at like 14, I think, when she first picked up guitar. But that was just like an overhaul of everything — I mean, all my time just poured into that training."

She was doing her own research, but also worked with vocal coach Eric Vetro, who's also worked with Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, and Shawn Mendes. "He encouraged me to consider what the lyrics of songs meant to her," Monica says. "Because the best musicians are storytellers and that's one of the best things about he renditions of these folk songs is you feel the story of the song."

And because of that, focusing on the lyrics "was also a part of the character development. So there were sort of siloed things like voice, guitar research, and then her speaking voice," she says. "And then all of those things started to just kind of like meld, you know. You have to play and sing at the same time and tell a story and do it from the perspective of Joan. And so so they just sort of over time kind of like bridged."

But no matter how much prep Monica, Timothée, and Elle Fanning (who stars as Sylvie Russo) did for the film, they still had to film in the middle of New York City, which came with its own set of 2024-specific challenges. "It was interesting to be filming and have people sneaking videos and posting them on the internet," she says, admitting that she "really just tried to turn all of that off to the best of my ability."

The film highlights the tension between celebrity and fame, considering we meet Bob Dylan right before he becomes, well, Bob Dylan. "It's a privilege to have to have so much attention and excitement on a project and I appreciate the intent, but you kind of just sort of turn it off a little bit and disengage," Monica says, "especially when you're talking about just a very different kind of fame in the sixties."

The MCU isn't done with the Multiverse just yet. Deadline confirmed that Chris Evans would step back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe on December 9, and their sources also say Anthony Mackie will return as Sam Wilson's version of Captain America. Maybe we'll see another Cap vs. Cap battle like we saw in 2019's Avengers: Endgame?

In addition to Chris Evans and RDJ, we'll reportedly also see the Fantastic Four (Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, and Joseph Quinn), and I'm hoping for confirmation we'll be reunited with Tom Holland's Peter Parker, Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan, and Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop.

Avengers: Doomsday is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, so I'm sure it'll have the same magic of the old school Marvel movies we know and love!

Some fans were not happy when Endgame ended with Steve Rogers returning the Infinity Stones to their respective timelines and staying in the 1940s to begin a life with Peggy (basically opening up a brand new timeline). His entire arc since Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011 had been about his relationship with Bucky Barnes, and fighting to help a Hydra-brainwashed Bucky return to his true self. Ditching his newfound family for Peggy simply feels like a character regression. But it looks like Doomsday could be a step in fixing that.

"I need Steve and Bucky together again," one Instagram user says. Another points out that Chris' involvement could be "a flashback to get people excited, but I hope it’s Captain Hydra. Give me Bucky fighting Captain Hydra!" Bucky vs. Evil Steve and Peter Parker vs. Doctor Doom would be the craziest plot twist of the century (especially if Doom is really an evil Tony Stark variant)!

TikTok sensations Barlow & Bear are no stranger to the spotlight. Besides the fact their Unofficial Bridgerton Musical won a Grammy (and basically broke the internet), popstar Abigail Barlow has millions of streams of her own, while Emily Bear performed in places like the White House and Carnegie Hall before turning 10.

So, it’s safe to say these two know what they’re doing. But one thing they never saw coming? Composing a Disney movie — or becoming the first female duo to do so. But that’s exactly what happened when they booked Moana 2.

How Barlow And Bear's Bond Influences Their Art

“We have such a sacred sisterhood!” Abigail tells me over email. “We met and found musical soulmates in one another. It’s more than just special. It’s a once in a lifetime connection that laid an incredibly strong foundation for creation.”

“Most of my life I’ve been the only girl in the room writing with much older people,” Emily adds. “Honestly because Abigail and I are like sisters, it creates such a safe place to be vulnerable together and create without restraint. When writing for Moana 2, we leaned on that emotional connection to explore the complexities of the story and how much we see ourselves in Moana!”

And the empowering message of the film, which follows Moana’s journey through Oceania, actually influenced their art. “Every day that I worked on Moana, I was empowered to continuously choose who I wanted to be,” Abigail says. “A leader, a listener, and a learner. In being tasked to write for this movie, I was being asked to go past my comfort zones. I think by being completely open hearted to this experience, it allowed me clarity when crafting the lyric and melody with Emily.”

Moana 2 is a story about finding strength through vulnerability, and that message became a huge theme in the music,” Emily says. “All our characters’ journeys reminded us to embrace our imperfections and trust the process of growth — no matter how painful it may seem in the moment. Moana is THAT girl. No one defines her but herself and writing for such an inspiring heroine FOR SURE inspired us right back.”

Why Abigail Barlow And Emily Bear Loved Working On 'Moana 2'

But considering the fact these two women are huge Disney fans (Abigail tells me her favorite Disney movies are The Little Mermaid and Frozen, while Emily loves Hercules and Mulan), one of the most inspiring details about their involvement is the fact that Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear’s Moana 2 score marks the first time a female duo has composed a Disney movie — and it’s a moment they don’t take for granted.

“I hope this shows [young girls] that their voices matter,” Emily says. “Growing up, I barely saw people who looked like me in roles like this, so being here now feels surreal. I want girls and women to know that their stories are powerful and deserve to be told. I really hope that Abigail and I can continue to open doors for more female creatives in film and music.”

And Abigail agrees. “I hope our story encourages young girls and women to forge their own path, and to never let anyone tell them they can’t do something.”

But this unbelievable experience didn’t come without its challenges. “Imposter syndrome is so real and a part of life for every single creative, and anyone who tells you otherwise is lying,” Emily says.

“I’m just trying to enjoy the ride, trust the fall, and be so grateful for the opportunity to be a role model for any little girl who might have a song in her heart,” Abigail says. “It’s an absolute honor and privilege to show her that anything — even magic — is possible.”

And according to Emily, the challenge of imposter syndrome actually propels her forward. “I do feel like that little voice of self-doubt pushes me to do the best work I possibly can do…I zoom out and focus on the bigger picture: the little girls watching this movie and realizing they, too, can dream as big as they want.”

How Lin Manuel-Miranda Empowered Barlow And Bear

One friendly face that provided a soft place to land was actually the original movie’s composer, Lin Manuel-Miranda! To no one’s surprise, theIn The Heights and Hamilton writer had some wonderful advice for Barlow and Bear.

“He was such a wonderful resource especially at the inception of the project when we were just setting sail,” Emily jokes. “He urged us to lean into our heroes for inspiration!”

“He gave me a stack of books I needed to buy,” Abigail adds. “Finishing the Hat by Stephen Sondheim, LYRICS by Oscar Hammerstein, Lyrics on Several Occasions by Ira Gershwin to name a few. He empowered me to study the craft of musical theatre storytelling in a way I never had before.”

And thanks to Barlow and Bear, a whole new generation of young women will dream about musical theatre storytelling now too!

Blue Ivy stars in Mufasa: The Lion King as Kiara with Beyoncé voicing Nala again. The highly anticipated film will show Mufasa's origins from a young cub to the majestic king we've come to know, love, and mourn.

In this cute BTS clip, Beyoncé and Blue are initially shown in separate recording booths while the latter says, "Don't stare at me." It's a typical response all kids eventually give their parents, but it doesn't bother Beyoncé. She simply smiles and says, "I can't help it. You're just too beautiful girl." Still, she offers a bit of reassurance to Blue. "I'mma be right here closing my eyes."

Blue briefly talked about what it feels like to work on a movie by saying, "If I like told my younger self that I was in a movie, I'd like never believe myself."

The star couldn't help but tear up as she continued to watch Blue and said, "Give me a second. I'm still...just can't believe that's my baby." While sitting side by Blue, Beyoncé eventually turns to look at her to let her know she's "so proud of her." Even Rumi, Beyoncé and Jay-Z's youngest daughter, makes a quick appearance!

The Mufasa: The Lion King premiere occurred December 9 with Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and grandma Tina Knowles standing by Blue Ivy's side. They looked stunning on the red carpet as they wore coordinating outfits. Although the ladies seemed to be present and excited, Jay-Z temporarily looked distracted while all of them were standing together (via PEOPLE).

If we had to guess, it may have something to do with the recent allegations connecting he and P. Diddy weighing on his mind. After the accusation went public, Jay-Z penned his own public statement and shared it to Roc Nations' social channels. The most heartbreaking aspect of it is realizing his children will be able to see everything.

"My wife and I will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims, and explain the cruelty and greed of people," he wrote (via X). Only time will tell how everything pans out, but we hope this doesn't overshadow Blue Ivy's success, nor do we want to see people vilify her or her siblings for alleged misdeeds of Jay-Z.
