Here’s How Katy Perry and Taylor Swift Went from Friends to Feuding

It’s been a weekend for Katy Perry. While live streaming her entire weekend, the singer went on an emotional roller coaster, talking about everything from her identity struggles to her cultural appropriation. When the weekend turned to her on-again feud with Taylor Swift, the singer made an apology of sorts to her former BFF.

While Swift has yet to comment, it’s time we took a trip down memory lane to see how the two mega stars have gone from squad to squabbles, in case there could be any kind of reconciliation.

2008-2009: The earliest days of Perry and Swift’s friendship saw the two meeting and hanging out at post-awards shows parties. As time went on, they released new music and fawned over each other publicly on Twitter. It was during these early days that Perry was still married to now-ex husband Russell Brand. (Photo via Larry Busacca/Getty)

November 2009-February 2010: During Perry and Swift’s budding friendship, Swift briefly dates fellow musician John Mayer. The couple split in February 2010, and Swift eventually goes on to write music about her former (much older) boyfriend by way of her hit, “Dear John.”

April 2010: With their friendship firmly cemented, the pair took to the stage together during Swift’s tour to perform Perry’s hit “Hot ‘n’ Cold.” What better way to profess your undying friend-love by covering one of their most popular songs?

November 2011: The pair send adoring tweets back and forth after Swift announces the arrival of her new cat, Meredith Grey. Both singers consider themselves to be “cat ladies,” and the friends gushing over a new kitten is wholesome.

July 2012: Perry’s husband, Russell Brand, tells her he is divorcing her via text message (which we see in all its heartbreaking glory during her docu-concert movie, All of Me. Brand admitted toBillboard Magazine that their short (less than two-year) marriage ended, in large part due to their conflicting schedules. (Photo via Larry Busacca/Getty)

August 2012: Scandal! Swift’s former boyfriend Mayer and BFF Perry start dating, although Swift seems okay with it, as the couple were spotted at the 2013 Grammy Awards and Swift and Perry had a friendly hello. (Photo via Christopher Polk/Getty)

September 20123:TMZ reports that the singers have have had a falling out due to Perry stealing three of Swift’s tour dancers after the dancers gave Swift 30 days notice in the middle of her tour.

October 2014: This is when it all falls apart. The release of Swift’s multi-platinum album 1989 sees hit single “Bad Blood” climb the charts. With lyrics like, “You know it used to be mad love/So take a look what you’ve done/’Cause baby, now we’ve got bad blood,” had everyone wondering who the song was about. In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, Swift said, “For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not. She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, ‘Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?'”

In response, Perry subtweeted, simply saying, “Look out for a Regina George in sheep’s clothing.” Even fans noticed that Swift was putting Perry on blast in the liner book for the album.

Summer 2015: Nicki Minaj adds fuel to the fire. After tweeting that it seems as if MTV will only nominate “slim women” for awards, Swift responded by saying, “It’s not like you to pit women against women, maybe one of the men took your spot.” Not to be outdone, Perry chimed in on the social platform, saying, “Finding it ironic to parade the pit women against other women argument about as one unmeasurably capitalizes on the take down of a woman…” (Photo via Larry Busacca/Getty)

May 2017: After a few random cutting tweets and comments regarding Swift, including Perry’s insistence that she’d consider working with the singer if she apologized to Perry, Perry releases the Taylor Swift diss track, “Swish Swish,” and although she claims it’s not about anyone in particular, to most people, it’s pretty clear that the song is about Swift. Perry even (sort of) admitted it on Carpool Karaoke.

June 2017: In a stroke of pure genius, it appears that Swift has gotten the last word (for now). When Perry released her new album, “Witness,” on June 9, that very same day Swift casually re-added her entire back catalog to streaming services after she’d pulled it three years prior. Shady.

Time will tell if the pair will ever truly get over their seemingly petty disagreements, but one thing’s for sure: In the nine years since the two first met, they’ve given us a lot of entertainment.

Have you ever had a major friend fallout? Tell us how it ended @BritandCo!

Do you hear wedding bells? Because after Tom Holland and Zendaya's engagement, Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco's engagement, and those Suki Waterhouse and Robert Pattinson marriage rumors, it appears Hollywood does. And after all those Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift engagement rumors, Travis just spilled on his ideal wedding timeline — that's right, it appears our favorite IRL rom-com couple could be thinking about tying the knot!

Here's what Travis Kelce had to say about his least favorite time of year to get married.

Travis Kelce wants to avoid THIS wedding season for one reason.

@britandco#greenscreen do you think any of these will come true?! #taylorswift#traviskelce#tayvis#travistaylor#thealchemy#prpredictions♬ the alchemy ts sped up - Swiftie_Jean-Alex 😁✨

On a new episode of the New Heights podcast he hosts with brother Jason, Travis Kelce revealed he would like to avoid an autumn wedding day. And the reason is literally so on brand it makes me laugh.

After a listener revealed over the phone that his girlfriend wants to schedule their wedding during football season, Travis admits that "I actually don't know people who've gotten married in the fall."

"My friends always do it in the summer," he says. "I've seen weddings everywhere but the fall. So, I'm not sure if the fall is a good wedding season."

The weather of an autumn wedding (not to mention the incredible aesthetic of the wedding photos!!) have always made it seem so dreamy. Plus, I've attended more than one summer wedding (some on the beach!) and it can get toasty under the summer sun. Spring then, Travis?

Travis' comments come after he responded to rumors that he'd pop the question to girlfriend Taylor Swift. During the June 1 Big Slick Celebrity Weekend's onstage comedy sketch, Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis asked Travis about a potential engagement. "Hey Travis, real talk, OK, just the guys here," Jason says. "When are you going to make an honest woman out of her?"

"Guys," Travis says, "you're really pushing it." It's a pretty kind way to say back off!! I'm excited for whenever Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce tell us they're engaged — should they choose to share at all.

Taylor Swift has been teasing Reputation (Taylor's Version) for two years — or, at least, Swifties have been clowning over it for two years. When Tay showed up to the 2022 VMAs in a "Look What You Made Me Do"-inspired outfit, fans expected her to drop the first Rep (TV) single, but she announced Midnights instead. And history repeated itself at the 2024 Grammys, when Taylor showed up in black & white before announcing The Tortured Poets Department.

Even though some fans feel confused, NOT getting Reputation (Taylor's Version) in 2024 totally goes with the "2 re-recordings one year, 1 new album the next" pattern we've seen since 2021. But there's one huge Easter egg that's been pointing us to 2025 all along: it's the Year of the Snake.

Here's the one major Reputation (Taylor's Version) release date Easter egg that suggests Taylor Swift could drop it in 2025.

When is Reputation (Taylor's Version) coming out?

Let it be known we still don't have an official Reputation (Taylor's Version) release date yet, but after the "I Can See You" music video featured the number 2.16 (February 16), everyone eagerly awaited February 2024 with baited breath...only to receive nothing. But now I've turned my eyes to February 16, 2025 because DUH, releasing Reputation (TV) during the Year of the Snake (the icon associated with the entire 2.5-year era) makes more sense than anything.

"Some of us have been saying this since like 2022," one TikTok user jokes, while another rationalizes, "We had fearless, red in 2021 then speak now, 1989 in 2023 so reputation and debut in 2025."

The Year of the Snake officially kicks off January 29, meaning we could be in for a late-January announcement, but some fans think Taylor will announce the album on New Year's Day 2025 in honor of the closing track on the album. In my opinion, it makes total sense to get Reputation (TV) for the first half of the year, and to wrap up the re-recording era with Taylor Swift (Taylor's Version) for the second half of the year before transitioning to her new movie (and a potential TS12, of course).

Will there be a Reputation (Taylor's Version)?

Yes, we're getting a Reputation (Taylor's Version)! Taylor Swift announced she'd be re-recording all of the albums leading up to Lover after she was unable to buy the rights to her music. In addition to more modern versions of all our favorite Taylor Swift songs, she's also added brand new tunes (called "From the Vault" tracks) as bonus songs for each album. Tracks like "When Emma Falls In Love (Taylor's Version)", "Timeless (Taylor's Version)", and "Is It Over Now? (Taylor's Version)" quickly became fan favorites!

Reputation has always been my favorite Taylor Swift album, and I can't wait to see what kind of vault tracks we get. At its core, Rep is a love album that also address fear and hope, and Reputation (TV) is going to be the one re-recording you won't want to miss.
