How This Entrepreneur Is Using Instagram and Fashion to Inspire Cultural Pride

In the fall of 2016, Patty Delgado made herself a jacket. Well, maybe she didn’t actually make the jacket itself — but she definitely made it better. Then a full-time freelance graphic and web designer (and a mostly inexperienced seamstress), Delgado stitched a sequin appliqué onto her denim jacket. The patch had significance to Delgado beyond just its sparkle. Discovered on one of her trips to Mexico City, the patch featured the Virgin of Guadalupe — an important symbol of Mexican identity — and offered a way for Delgado to demonstrate her cultural pride through creative, eye-catching fashion.

“I put on my jacket and I just felt this instant pride, this instant nostalgia for my culture,” she tells us. “I felt really empowered. I knew that if I felt so strongly about this jacket and if it meant so much to me as a cultural statement, then it would sit really well with other millennial folks like me who are children of Latino immigrants.”

Delgado shared photos of her jacket on Instagram, and it wasn’t long before others took notice. Their reaction was just as she expected it would be… but on a larger scale. “It was amazing — people sharing my photos, people tagging their moms, moms sending the photos [of the jacket] to their kids,” she tells us. “It was an overwhelmingly positive response from an online community of Latinos on Instagram.”

Soon after — and with the positive feedback from Instagram as a motivator — Delgado took to her parents’ living room with enough wholesale denim and sequin patches to create 30 similar jackets. Since each appliqué was hand stitched to a jacket, the process was time-consuming, but Delgado says she loved taking her design skills off the computer screen and into a hands-on project. In early 2017, she decided to shift her schedule to allow for less graphic design work and more time crafting jackets, and Hija de tu Madre — which translates, in English, to “daughter of your mother” — was born.

Today, less than a year and a half after making her very first jacket, 26-year-old Delgado is working on Hija de tu Madre full time. In January 2018, she hired her first assistant — and not a minute too soon, since each week, she hand stitches patches onto 20 to 30 jackets. And while she’s cleared out of her parents’ house, Delgado has converted the living room of her own apartment into a warehouse space. “It’s definitely a humble start, but I take a lot of pride,” she says. “This is a very homegrown business.”

Much of the growth of Hija de tu Madre can be attributed to the brand’s awesome Instagram presence, through which an incredible 97 percent of leads for the products are funneled. Delgado’s social media strategy is focused on building community and harnessing Latinx cultural pride. In today’s political climate, the entrepreneur feels even more strongly about the importance of reaching out to immigrant and first-generation American communities.

“It’s very disheartening and heartbreaking that people are literally being told to get out,” Delgado tells us. “I’m trying my best to create products that help people feel like they do belong, that make people feel like there is fashion out there that makes them feel represented. It’s no longer about selling or making money. It’s about creating a safe space for likeminded folks to share their immigrant experiences or their experiences of being a child of Latino immigrants.”

Delgado purchases the patches for Hija de tu Madre’s jackets from Mexico, which has allowed her to develop strong working relationships with Mexican businesses. She’s also proudly watched as her customers — inspired by the brand’s bold, colorful Instagram feed — purchase the items from her growing product line as a cultural statement for their loved ones.

“My favorite thing is the reward that comes with getting tagged in a photo and seeing someone write about how much they love their jacket and how special it is for them and their family,” Delgado says. “I’m trying to create art and fashion that has a clear cultural statement, all while empowering Latinas and women.”

Don’t you just love when a jacket can be so much more than a jacket?

When you wake up and get dressed in the morning, the last thing you want to do is make yourself look older. Yet, certain colors have a way of adding years to our appearance without us even realizing it.

While some shades can enhance natural beauty and give you a vibrant glow, others might just make you appear more mature.

Here are the colors that may be aging you so you can steer clear (and have an excuse to give your closet a refresh).

Scroll to find out which colors are actually making you look much older!

1. Neutral Beige

Askar Abayev

Open up TikTok, and you'll find that neutral colors, especially beige, are totally "in" among younger generations. From camel wool coats to tan accessories, these warm hues are considered classic and refined.

However, they also have the potential to make you look older than you are. Shades like beige can wash out your complexion, giving you a flat or lifeless appearance.

To avoid getting bogged down by your own clothing, try mixing beige with bolder and richer tones, like navy or deep jewel shades.

2. Too Much Gray & Black

RF._.studio

We all know that black is generally considered the most flattering clothing color. Its darkness helps smooth out our silhouettes and hide imperfections that lighter colors, like white, would immediately call attention to.

But even though both black and gray are extremely versatile and easy to mix and match, wearing too many dark hues can create harsh contrasts and cast sharp shadows on your face that inadvertently highlight fine lines and wrinkles.

The key is to soften your outfits whenever you can by incorporating warmer tones. If you're wearing a black or gray blouse, for instance, layer a brighter cardigan or blazer on top.

Also, the type of black hue you choose does matter. Those with fairer skin tones should opt for a softer charcoal black, which results in a less jarring contrast.

3. Soft Pastels

SHVETS production

Now that we're rounding the corner on spring, you may have plenty of pastel garments in your closet just waiting to be worn. Unfortunately, you might want to think again.

Even though pastels give off a fresh aesthetic, they're not always the best choice if you're going for a youthful look. The lighter tones can emphasize eye changes as you get older– such as pigmentation of the eyelids and a duller appearance of the sclera or the white part of your eye– and make your eyes appear sunken.

That's why it's advised that you stick with slightly deeper or richer tones to complement your complexion.

4. Monochromatic Outfits

Finally, monochromatic outfits are also back in style, but wearing the same color from head to toe might make you look more mature.

The key to appearing youthful is being thoughtful about contrast. You can still look sleek while mixing in different shades. Pairing a cream sweater with deeper tones, like a mocha skirt or boots, will add a lot more depth.

And if you ever feel like your outfits are falling flat, remember that accessories are your best friend. A bold scarf, baseball cap, fun purse, or statement necklace will instantly help your look feel more dynamic and lively.

Enough chatter about what's outdated or overrated! We could hyper-focus on this all day long, but we'd rather talk about which fashion trendsshould be in your closet in 2025. With the help of Stitch Fix's stylist Jessica Sockel and Amy Ekren, stylist as well as owner of Inherit Clothing, we've got an inside look at the easiest styles you can make work with what you already own.

P.S. Some of these trends are making a comeback from last year!

7 fashion trends you definitely need — and are easy to style — this year!

Anthropologie

1. The Bridgerton Effect

Are you sick of hearing about Bridgerton? We're not and it seems like others want to take a page from the franchise's style book. Jessica Sockel says, "The show’s romantic, whimsical aesthetic appeared to inspire our clients [Stitch Fix] with requests for “coquette” styles up 100% compared to last year."

2. Timeless, Structured Dresses

Fashion trends are always fun when they feel timeless and Amy Ekren predicts we'll continue seeing styles that mirror this. "Clean lines and simple shapes will be popular, but with interesting details like pleats, asymmetry, or unique necklines. No one wants to feel like they’re trying too hard, and structured pieces make a statement without being loud," she says.

Abercrombie & Fitch

3. Neutrals and Soft Earth Tones

Somehow our mothers were right — neutrals are beautiful (and easy) to style. With trends like mocha mousse taking center stage in the fashion and home decor industries, Ekren says we'll be seeing it all year because "neutrals make it easier to build a wardrobe that feels cohesive instead of trendy."

She also draws attention to shades like "warm, muted tones like oat, clay, and soft olive" that "will take over in 2025." Why? It's simple: she feels "they’re easy to style, feel sophisticated, and work for every season."

MANGO

4. Practical Layers

Lean in close. You're ready to stop feeling swallowed by your coats aren't you? Ekren says, "People are moving away from oversized puffers and leaning into more tailored outerwear. Cropped wool coats, quilted jackets, and fitted trenches will be everywhere. There will be more functional style."

Try this style: MANGO Double-Breasted Cotton Trench Coat

Gigi Pip

5. Western-Inspired

Did you think the cowgirl era was over? It's clearly not because shows like Yellowstone are making us want to tap into our inner 'yeehaw' this year with a slight upgrade to traditional silhouettes. Sockel says, "Western charm will continue to be popular in 2025 and evolve to incorporate a refined edge. Denim-on-denim, barn jackets and barrel-leg jeans (which have already surged 2,925% in client searches compared to last year) will become wardrobe staples."

And if you thought "suede and fringe" were long buried in time, Sockel says "requests have also increased by 25% since last year" which is "cementing this trend's staying power" in Stitch Fix's eyes. It's to the point where she's seeing "82% of stylists" agreeing that "cowboy boots and feminine dresses will be a client favorite." We guess it's time to break out our cowboy hats!

GAP

6. 'Skinny' Silhouettes

We know — who decided to bring back the 'skinny' trend? We're just as shocked as you are, but Sockel's seeing an increased interested in it. "Rumor has it skinny jeans are staging a comeback. While wide-leg jeans remain the most requested silhouette, 2025 is set to spotlight elevated night-out looks featuring bold prints and unexpected shapes—a vibe Stitch Fix is calling the "Corner Booth" trend."

Her suggestion? "Picture faux leather skinny jeans paired with a cut-out top and animal print booties, which saw a 400% spike in client searches between June and September 2024."

Try this style: GAP High Rise True Skinny Jeans

Old Navy

7. Minimalism

Overall? Ekren says, "Less is definitely more next year, but not in a boring way. I see minimalist style leaning toward higher-quality fabrics and well-placed accents, like subtle embroidery or textured fabrics."

You can still have fun with this trend even though it's not full of statement pieces. Ekren believes "simple doesn't have to mean plain" and we couldn't agree more!

Costco isn't just known for offering a shockingly wide array of products at unbeatable prices. The membership-only warehouse club is also a favorite shopping destination for all kinds of foods.

The infatuation among shoppers arguably began back in 1984. That year, the iconic hot dog and soda combo, which costs just $1.50, was first added to its food court menu, and it's been history ever since.

Today, people don't just frequent Costco; they're loyal fans of the store. So, when certain products disappear from shelves or the food court, outrage can ensue.

These are eight of the most popular foods that Costco has stopped selling, sparking a lot of upset.

Scroll to find out which popular Costco foods you can't find on shelves anymore!

1. Barbecue Beef Brisket Sandwich

Valeria Boltneva

The barbecue beef brisket sandwich is one past food court favorite that was sadly discontinued. It featured shredded brisket smothered in tangy barbecue sauce and topped with sweet coleslaw on a soft bun — similar to the sandwich pictured — for only $4.99.

While it was a hit with a decent amount of Costco members, there wasn't enough consistent demand to keep this sandwich on the menu. It also reportedly required more time and effort for employees to construct than other simpler options.

2. Kirkland American Cheese

Kirkland

You can no longer find Kirkland American cheese in Costco's deli section. This favorite for burgers and sandwiches was removed from stores in 2019, and it's unclear why.

However, some people speculate that the growing demand for other types of cheese, such as sharp cheddar and mozzarella, might've led Kirkland American cheese to become less of a priority. It seems like the above pictured American cheese slices are only available in Australia now.

3. Cinnamon Sugar Pretzels

Auntie Anne's

Costco's cinnamon sugar pretzel was warm, chewy, and popular among shoppers looking for a sweet pick-me-up. But you can't find it at the food court anymore.

The exact reasons for this treat's removal haven't been confirmed, either. Nonetheless, it's thought that cinnamon sugar pretzels got the boot due to a combination of low sales and Costco's shift toward offering healthier menu options.

If you're missing that Costco sweet treat, you can't go wrong with a cinnamon sugar pretzel from Auntie Anne's (pictured above)!

4. Kirkland Signature Turkey Burgers

Costco

Kirkland Signature turkey burgers were a convenient frozen food option packed with protein. In fact, each patty only had 200 calories yet carried 25 grams of protein.

Despite that, the turkey burgers were discontinued in 2018, and the reason remains a mystery. Some fans were so disappointed that they actually started a petition to get the product back in Costco freezers, but the store reportedly hasn't responded.

Instead, you can get a 32-pack of Rastelli’s Antibiotic-Free Turkey Craft Burgers (pictured above), if you're looking for a similar fix!

5. All American Chocolate Cake

Reddit/r/Costco

With multiple layers of rich chocolate cake that could easily feed a group of 20, this product was a go-to for countless shoppers. However, it was surprisingly pulled from shelves in 2020, possibly due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Costco's exact reasoning is still unclear. Thankfully, though, chocolate lovers can now find mini versions of this dessert being sold as cupcakes.

6. Kirkland Signature Light Beer

Reddit/r/Costco

This product was Costco's attempt to enter the beer market. Unfortunately, it didn't quite hit the mark.

Kirkland Signature Light Beer received harsh criticism, with people online saying it "stinks" and has a "rubber smell." So, regardless of the fact that it was sold at a low price of around $0.50 per can, the beer was ultimately discontinued in 2018.

7. Polish Hot Dog

Costco

Despite Costco's Polish hot dog having a dedicated fanbase, it wasn't large enough to sustain this food court item. Low sales pushed it to be taken off the menu back in 2018.

In the wake of its removal, Costco shared a statement detailing how the Polish hot dog was discontinued to make room for healthier options, like the all-beef hot dog.

8. Chocolate-Dipped Ice Cream Bar

Costco

One final ghost of Costco's food court past is the chocolate-dipped ice cream bar. This dessert disappeared from the menu in 2013, but even a decade later, fans are still upset about it.

Sold for just $1.50, it featured vanilla ice cream dipped in chocolate and rolled in toasted almonds. It's believed that the rising costs of dairy and almonds pushed Costco to take it off the menu, and it's unclear if this product will ever make a comeback.

If you're looking for something similar, I'd grab these Kirkland Signature Ice Cream Bars — and they come in a pack of 18!

The live-action Snow White hits theaters March 21, but the movie's already started plenty of conversations. Actress Rachel Zegler went viral for her comments at the 2022 D23 convention, where she said the original cartoon was dated — and that their version of the iconic character "is not going to be saved by the prince, and she's not going to be dreaming about true love," as she toldVariety.

"She’s going to be dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be and that her late father told her that she could be if she was fearless, fair, brave and true," she continues. Okay, I totally understand where she's coming from, but the internet responded with an insane amount of backlash, calling the new project "toxic" and even sending Rachel death threats. Um, definitely not cool. Well, after clarifying she was never asking viewers to choose between leadership and romance, Rachel Zegler finally just spoke on all the drama.

Here's what Rachel Zegler had to say about all the live-action Snow White drama.

Rachel Zegler calls 'Snow White' an "honor."

In an interview with Vogue Mexico, Rachel Zegler opened up about Disney's live-action Snow White, and all the controversy following that initial 2022 interview. “I interpret people’s feelings about this film as passion for it and what an honor to be able to be a part of something that people are so passionate about," she says. "We’re not always going to have the same feelings as everyone around us and all we can do is give our best.”

“It’s really important for audiences to know that Disney has found this beautiful, delicate balance between taking the animated classic that everyone knows and loves from 1937, and at the same time introducing it to this new generation,” she continues. “Her superpower is her heart, there’s no supernatural power that Snow White possesses beyond her love for humanity, for all living creatures and her fundamental belief that there’s goodness in everything, that’s something I really think the world could use more of."

Good is exactly the word I would use to describe Rachel's past characters; every single one is kind, loving, and empathetic — and dreams that the world can be a better place. Snow White is a fitting next step in her filmography.

Rachel Zegler points out how the princess she resonated with as a child was Belle because “she had brown hair and it was hard to find someone who looked like us in these types of movies."

She's hoping this iteration of Snow White will open up a whole new world (oops, wrong movie) for girls who don't often see themselves in leading roles. “Now I see what a beautiful experience it was for little Black girls around the world to see Halle [Bailey] play Ariel in The Little Mermaid,” she says.

“I hope that through my own narrative in my films, I can also show the world what I believe in. The fact that West Side Story was my first film project and that it was a story about migration from Puerto Rico to New York, I think that was a statement of intent more than anything else,” she continues, adding she wants to “do everything I can to work with more women, because I think it makes an incredible difference in film production.”

This princess's future is bright and I can't wait to see what comes next.
