An Illustrated Guide to Iconic ’90s Shoe Trends

Even if you didn't grow up during the heyday of Beanie Babies, aggressively crimped hair, and dial-up internet, you can surely appreciate the era that was the '90s. And although the oh-so-iconic decade gave us a few fashion trends we'll hopefully never revisit (like butterfly hair clips and JNCO jeans), it did pretty dang well in the belt bag, mom jean, and footwear categories. Ahead you'll find an illustrated guide to our favorite throwback shoe styles from the '90s starring the platform sandal, dad sneaker, kitten heel, and more.
Slinky Slides: Probably the most well-known (and hilariously impractical) '90s shoe trend, the slinky slide is just so comfortable. Sure, your foot slides as you walk, making shuffling your only option, but who cares when your feet are basically walking on clouds. Originally brought to us by Steve Madden, this platform slide features a spandex strap that actually stretches with your every move.
Chunky Oxfords: First appearing on men in Scotland and Ireland in the 17th century and named after Oxford University, this style gained popularity much later with a heightened, chunkier iteration. In the age of chokers, Kurt Cobain, and black lipstick, interest in large and in charge Oxford styles (remember Hush Puppies?!) reached a fever pitch. Just like they say in Texas, when it comes to chunky Oxfords, bigger is better.
Adidas Slides: Traditionally worn in the shower or by the pool, the Adidas Adilette may actually win as the most recognizable '90s shoe style. First introduced in 1972, this comfy, waterproof style has made leaps and bounds since it first protected locker room feet. Now, celebs including Gigi and Bella Hadid, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber (yes, we said it), and Suki Waterhouse all slip into them.
Kitten Heels: In the '50s, these mini heels got their name after young girls AKA "kittens" starting wearing them as training heels for stilettos. The popularity surged again in the '90s when supermodels including Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington wanted to rock heels without the added height. Even more recently, designers Manolo Blahnik, Celiné, and Prada have brought back the silo in a big way and we are 100 percent here for this comfy style.
Square Toes: After years of pointy toe perseverance, this clunky shape is having a minute in the style spotlight. And because it was low-key made cool by the Gucci loafer, how can you not be on board?
Jellies: Referring to the translucent sandal comprised of PVC (and sometimes actual glitter), jellies were once a wardrobe staple. Now, the same molded material can be found in the form of ballet flats, sandals, and cheerful boots. This affordable fad has traveled the world over, comes in a range of colors and styles, is extremely comfortable, and can be worn year-round. What's not to love?

Platform Sandals: Want a bit of height without sinking your shoes in the ground with troublesome heels? Japanese gals did, and so the platform sandal of the 1800s was born. Much later In the 1930s, Italian shoe designer Salvatore Ferragamo brought them back in a bigger, taller way, adding a cork heel and more height, thus becoming more appealing to the masses. Then came the '90s and with it the Spice Girls, who pretty much launched the girl power movement in an array of platform sandals (ranging from sporty styles to polished iterations).

Mary Janes: In case you're a child and missed the epicness that was and is the movie Clueless, please go and stream it STAT. Thanks to the abrasively checkered and knee high-socked fashion of the film's protagonist BFFs Cher and Dionne, Mary Janes became popular throughout the '90s. But this wasn't the beginning. Dating as far back as the Renaissance, MJs were originally unisex before making the shift to female-only footwear in the 1930s after a comic strip called Buster Brown featured the main character's sweetheart — Mary Jane — in the now classic shoe style.
Mules: Once confined to just the bedroom, this originally ancient Roman style was thought of as very risqué until it was finally worn out in public in 1694. Over 300 years later, Marilyn Monroe and other pin-up stars began rocking the backless shoe on the reg. The '90s rendition featured a chunkier heel, and women were often spotted wearing them with socks. Overall, we think Manolo Blahnik said it best when he declared that “It’s such a wonderful thing to do mules again."
Dad Sneakers: Remember those fugly kicks you begged your dad not to wear out? You meet again. And even though *you* may still take issue with the contrasting colors, flair-tastic laces, and hefty soles, high fashion does not. Thanks to the likes of Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, and Gucci, this style may be the hottest and priciest throwback purchase of 2018.

No matter whether you're a dedicated BookTok fan or you only read the classics, one thing's for sure: the summer of 2024 — and the It Ends With Us press junket — will be something we remember for a very long time. And amid rumors that the It Ends With Us cast was split over beef between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, it seemed like the internet couldn't stop talking about Blake's outfit choices. The actress (who famously doesn't use a stylist) was mixing patterns and colors for a bright, floral fashion experience that I, personally, loved. Fashion is all about expression and I had a good time seeing Blake have such a good time!

Well, this fall officially ushers us into a new fashion era because florals are out and Blake's classic art-deco style is so back.

What is Blake Lively's fashion style?

Monica Schipper/Getty Images

Blake Lively usually opts for a balance of sophisticated and fun in her outfits, like wearing structured suits with feminine details during press for A Simple Favor, or the art deco copper Met Gala dress that transformed into the ceiling of Grand Central Station.

Most recently, Blake looked AMAZING at the 2024 LACMA Art+Film Gala on November 2. The actress wore a chainmail mini dress from Tamara Ralph with rose gold, pink, and topaz crystals along with a topaz silk taffeta cape like the princess she is. She accessorized with Lorraine Scwartz jewelry and strappy Louboutins.

This year's gala honored Simone Leigh and Baz Luhrmann, and Blake took to Instagram to express just how much Baz's art has impacted her life.

"@bazluhrmann was the first & only signed poster I was ever lucky enough to have on my wall when I was a teenager. It’s still on my wall today," she says in the post. "To know him will always be surreal. He’s even more mischievous and magical in real life. He’ll grab your hand and run away from the gala with you to do an impromptu photoshoot because he’s inspired by everything, your cape and a palm tree is all he needs to see thrill. He’ll enthusiastically play along when you ask to put your cape on him so you can take pictures of him in a pose that he has subliminally trademarked in every girl who grew up in the 90s mind."

"Baz™️ serves as not only your inspiration, your creativity, your possibility, and your unfiltered joy, but he’s the match & the lighter fluid to it," she continues. "He’s happiest when you’re happiest. That applies to strangers, friends, colleagues. You can see it in his work, because it’s WHO HE IS."

But Blake didn't stop there, and praised Simone too! "An artist who moves with more intention than anyone I’ve ever witnessed," she says. "Her work is striking, varied, grand, contained, unrestrained, full of both discipline and abandon. It’s deeply emotional and carries momentous meaning and gravity. She is stunning in every way a person can be. What a night to be in the room with such talent, grace and art. 🙏♥️🙏 I will truly never forget it."

Meanwhile, at the CFDA Awards on October 28, Blake Lively wiped the slate clean with an all-white look comprised of a sculptural white dress featuring a slit in the skirt, a white blazer, and glittery silver heels Cinderella would totally approve of. She also swapped her iconic beachy waves for a sleek blowout that I'm obsessed with.

Has Blake Lively ever had a stylist?

No, Blake Lively doesn't use a stylist. (Although, an assistant helps her source pieces, and she has plenty of relationships with amazing brands.)

In 2018, the actress told WWD she took on the stylist role "because I have control issues and a big ego – that’s probably the honest answer."

“I love design and I love fashion and it’s a way to be creative. In my job I get to be creative, but it’s over a period of time and so many other people are involved, whereas this is a beginning, middle and end, and I get to be creative and there’s an end date in the near future," she continues. "It’s the same reason why I like doing my friends’ hair and makeup or cooking – you get to be creative and finish it. Whereas with my job you do it and then two years later it’s finished. It probably goes back to the control issues; it’s like, ‘Ok I did it, I completed it, it’s done!’”

What do you think of Blake Lively being her own stylist? Scroll through her It Ends With Us press looks and tell us your favorite! Mine will always be the Tamara Ralph Couture gown she wore to the London premiere.

If there's one thing that unites all teen TV shows, it's consistently casting people who are way too old to play high schoolers. Riverdale, One Tree Hill, and even Stranger Things have all fallen victim to this trend, boasting a lineup of beefy, chiseled actors who are supposed to be 15 years old. And Outer Banks is no exception.

OBX season 4 part 2 drops on Netflix November 7, and if you're like me, you're going down every rabbit hole to find out as much as possible about your favorite Pogues, which is why I scoured the internet to figure out the actors' ages — and how they compare to their character ages (including the cast member that's almost TWICE their character's age). Keep reading for the full scoop!

The 'Outer Banks' Cast Ages Vs. Their Characters

Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix

Madelyn Cline as Sarah Cameron

Sarah Cameron is 19 years old in Outer Banks season 4, while Madelyn Cline turns 27 on December 21.

Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix

Rudy Pankow as JJ Maybank (or is it JJ Groff now?)

JJ Maybank is around 19 years old when Wes Genrette asks the Pogues to find Blackbeard's treasure. Actor Rudy Pankow is 26.

Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix

Chase Stokes as John B. Routledge

While fearless leader John B. Routledge is also around 19, Chase Stokes is actually 32 years old. That makes him 13 years older than John B.!

Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix

Madison Bailey as Kiara Carrera

In Outer Banks season 4 Kie Carrera's 19 years old. In real life, Madison Bailey is 25.

Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix

Carlacia Grant as Cleo Anderson

Cleo Anderson seems to be around the same age as the rest of the Pogues, which would make her 19. Actress Carlacia Grant is 33 years old.

Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix

Jonathan Daviss as Pope Heyward

Pope Heyward is in the same grade as JJ, Kie, and John B., which would mean he's also 19 during Outer Banks season 4. Jonathan Daviss turned 24 in February.

Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix

Drew Starkey as Rafe Cameron

Rafe Cameron started the series at 19, which would make him 22 now. Drew Starkey just turned 31 on November 4. (Happy late birthday Drew!)

Jackson Lee Davis/Netflix

Austin North as Topper Thornton

Topper Thornton is probably 19 years old in OBX 4, while Austin North is 28 in real life.

‘Tis the season for cold temperatures, so if you’ve gotta bundle up, you might as well do it in style. Of course, you shouldn’t have to sacrifice warmth for the look – which is exactly where these trusty wintercoats come in! The winter coat trends on schedule for 2024 truly have range – they vary widely in length, material, and texture, but all look so chic no matter what layers you throw on. These are the winter coat trends you need to know to guide your next cold-weather shopping spree. Betweenbarn jackets and shaggy faux furs, you’re sure to find a style that speaks to you.

Trench + Longline Coats

Reformation

Reformation Matteo Trench

Trench coats definitely give you the most coverage, which is perfect for those extra-cold days. More than anything, they supply major main character energy to any look you plan to wear this season. The longline cut brings the drama!

Abercrombie & Fitch

Abercrombie & Fitch Classic Long Trench Coat

This green trench hosts all the classic details: a double-breasted collar, side pockets, and a tie waist. It's timeless as can be, so you can wear it year after year in endless ways.

J.Crew

J.Crew Wrap Trench Coat

If you dare to make a statement, this bold red trench coat is the piece for you. The thick wool-blend fabric will also keep you super snug.

Barn Coats

Free People

We The Free Denim Barn Coat

Also called barn jackets or chore coats, barn coats bring a sense of utility to your outfits. They're definitely very trendy at the moment, but I think they're worth wearing past this season alone since you can easily layer up or down depending on the weather.

Reformation

Reformation Harrison Utility Jacket

Snag a barn coat in a neutral colorway like this, and you've got yourself an absolute wardrobe staple that wears well with any of the colors in your closet. I'd layer this piece up with a sweater, wide leg jeans, and cowboy boots for a chic tomboy-ish look.

Nordstrom

1.STATE Oversize Cotton Twill Barn Jacket

This barn coat is intentionally oversized, so it'll be perfect for topping off the multiple layers you've gotta rock for those colder-than-cold days. The sleek buttons and contrasting collar spice this clean-cut style up the perfect amount.

Exaggerated Puffers

Urban Outfitters

The North Face 1996 Retro Nuptse Jacket

When it comes to puffer coats, try taking them a step further by finding styles like this that really emphasize the puffiness. The stitching adds eye-catching textures and patterns that'll supply your outfits with extra oomph. This puffer in particular expertly insulates your body heat with 700 down fill – even snow days are no match for its comfort.

Gap

Gap Oversized Denim Puffer Jacket

I've never seen a denim puffer coat before, but now that I've stumbled upon this style from Gap, I need one ASAP. The boxy fit is ideal for piling more layers on, but the silhouette won't entirely drown your figure out.

Free People

Free People Solid Cotton Candy Puffer

This "puffy to the max" coat makes a statement with dramatic balloon sleeves and a stand collar that's perfect for cozying up to when the wind chill is just too much.

Leather Bomber Jackets

Target

Wild Fable Faux Leather Oversized Bomber Jacket

Bomber jackets made in a leather (or in this case, faux leather) fabrication feel much more polished and mature than the polyester ones of days past. They toe the line between dressed-up and casual, which is perfect for when you don't want to think too hard about your winter 'fits.

Free People

We The Free Buckle Up Vegan Leather Jacket

This pick is perfectly oversized to accomodate more warming garments like sweaters, long sleeve tees, and flannels. Layer up!

Anthropologie

Pilcro Oversized Washed Faux-Leather Jacket

This is an undeniable statement coat you can wear on repeat with dresses, skirts, jeans, trousers, and more!

Shaggy + Sherpa Jackets

Mango

Mango Jacket with Shearling-Effect Lining

For a fun play on texture, sherpa-lined and shaggy coats are the way to go. This one is also weighted heavy enough that you won't need many extra layers to keep warm while you're out and about!

Nordstrom

Sam Edelman Faux Shearling Short Jacket

You'll fall in love with just how soft this coat is. It pairs well with more formal party 'fits as well as casual errand get-ups.

Gap

Gap Recycled Faux Fur Coat

No matter what you're wearing underneath, this longline faux fur coat will turn heads. I think it'd look simply iconic with some leather pants and chunky black boots!

One Tree Hill star Bethany Joy Lenz basically broke the internet when she revealed she was in a cult for 10 years — and just how much it affected her time on the teen drama. Her new book Dinner for Vampires chronicles her experience joining the Big House Family Cult, and the actress told Call Her Daddy's Alex Cooper she even distanced herself from the rest of the cast because of how controlling the group became. Unfortunately, that included her newfound friendship with Sophia Bush.

"Sophia herself was also hilarious and a bit mischievous, always down for an impulsive adventure," Bethany writes in her book (via People). Even though the pair started off the show so close they adopted puppies together, they quickly drifted, and Bethany adds, "I soon realized I wasn't equipped to get too close to Sophia."

"As bubbly and compassionate as she was, she was even more intelligent...Her mind could have been put to good use by NASA — except, of course, she's so beautiful the astronauts would never want to leave Earth," she continues. "I failed to notice that she was also trying hard...Frequently favored and constantly underestimated in life because of her beauty, Sophia worked obsessively at proving her value."

This honestly sounds pretty familiar to Brooke's character arc on the show — and it reminds me of the fact Sophia Bush said Mark Schwann and the writer's room wrote their personal struggles into the show. "They made practice of taking advantage of people's personal lives," she said on an episode of Dax Shepherd's Armchair Expert podcast. "Deeply personal things that were happening in their lives and they would wind up in storylines. It wasn't OK."

Bethany Joy Lenz continues that despite the fact her and Sophia hit it off at the beginning of filming, she "was using religion as my benchmark."

"My budding friendship with sweet Sophia became a casualty of this, and instead of sitting shiva for my ego, I really f—ing wish I could turn back time, walk into her trailer, and give her a long, hard hug," Bethany says.

While that breaks my heart more than a little, OTH fans everywhere are thankful the actresses have reunited since the show wrapped (and Bethany left the cult in 2012) for their Drama Queens rewatch podcast.

"We definitely talked about our time back then and what was hard and how great it was to reconnect and the feelings of unraveling things that were so mysterious to us at the time," Bethany told Alex Cooper. She also spoke on the recent rumored feud between her and Hilarie Burton, which fans began to discuss after they realized the actresses didn't follow each other on Instagram anymore.

"I love Hilarie,” she says. “I have always and will always and I don’t have any problem with her...There have been some bizarre misunderstandings that I really hope we can figure out one day, but I love that girl."
