This Working Mom Created a Coworking Space for Women to Inspire and Elevate Each Other

When you’re a freelancer, coworking spaces can be a dream-come-true scenario for getting your work done on deadline without the distractions of your Netflix account and comfy couch. Another bonus for idyllic coworking spaces? Research has found that people who work in these types of environments are happier and more productive. In this week’s How to Quit Your Day Job series, we chat with Grace Kraaijvanger, the CEO and founder of The Hivery, a stunning coworking space in Mill Valley, CA, that’s helping working moms and women who want to start their own businesses by connecting them to mentors and offering workshops and support.

Meet the Coworking Space Pro: Grace Kraaijvanger

At 27, Grace Kraaijvanger wanted to open a dance studio in San Francisco. While searching for spaces for the studio, she started thinking about using the space for a women’s collective, as a place for women to collaborate and work, but she didn’t end up pursuing the venture. Instead, Kraaijvanger worked as a marketing executive, became a mom, and put off her dream until her mother passed away. The tragedy reconnected her with a sense of creative purpose. She made a dance film in honor of her mom and started a lunch discussion called “Women Inspiring Women.” Then, three years ago, she opened The Hivery, and the fruits of her labor are inspiring wonderful collaborations at her gorgeous coworking space in Marin County, CA.

At The Hivery, members can enjoy workshops and events, such as Wellness Wednesdays, art walks, tutorials by other members, and new member coffee chats. The space itself has large, inviting windows, a gorgeous kitchen, inspiration labs, outdoor tables for some much-needed nature, and private spaces for meetings. In 2016, The Hivery hosted an Entrepreneurs Lab to bring together like-minded women for a day of speakers and inspiration.

Brit + Co: What’s your morning routine?

Grace Kraaijvanger: Going to my favorite 6am yoga class twice per week; early morning meditation (I’m an avid fan of Deepak and Oprah 21-day meditations); and never, ever starting my day without coffee (frothed coconut milk, please!). I also like to take 10-15 minutes to write when I get the time. My favorite moments of the day are sipping my coffee before anyone else is awake. I always light a candle while I have my coffee. I added this to my morning routine a few years ago and though it’s the most simple act, it has made an enormous difference. Light a candle! It tells your mind and body this is your moment to center.

B+C: What inspired you to start your company?

GK: My inspiration to create a women’s coworking space came from a much deeper place than wanting to design a beautiful, aesthetically pleasing office; I wanted to create space for a movement and the transformation of a deep-seeded system.

We are overflowing with talent and ideas; the problem is we feel disconnected, both from each other and ourselves. I wanted to create a space that satiated the desire to feel supported, vibrant in our pursuits, and part of a community. Since The Hivery’s launch, I’ve been wholeheartedly committed to designing a new ecosystem for women to create work, business, and art in non-traditional ways that empower and embolden a change in the current system. A beautiful coworking space and “inspiration lab” is a perfect vehicle for a much larger movement in the way women work, gather, collaborate, fund each other’s ideas, make an impact, and feel a greater sense of self-worth.

Brit + Co: How does The Hivery help women get back to their passions?

GK: The Hivery environment exists solely for the expansion and elevation of each woman. New members, especially moms with small kids at home, often exclaim, “I can’t believe how much I get done here.” It’s because we’ve removed all other distractions, such as kids wanting our attention, laundry that needs to be done, and beds that need to be made. Multi-tasking and working from home has made us all feel a little isolated and crazy, as if we’re never doing anything at 100 percent. Creating a beautiful, supportive environment that was built for unleashing the potential of the individual woman recalibrates that urge to constantly be working on something else when it’s finally your time to work on yourself and your work.

When my kids were very young and I was working from home (before I built The Hivery), I took a conference call from inside my shower in a desperate attempt to get away from the playful, yet very loud sounds of a play-date and my barking dog. How could I elevate my work and living as my best self while locked in my bathroom, sitting on the floor of the shower with my laptop? I felt like I was failing — both at work and as a mom. I know I’m not the only one who has tearfully wondered how I could possibly have a career, run a business, and still be a great mom. I created The Hivery as an answer to these very real challenges. It is a place where women and mothers can feel inspired, supported, and empowered to navigate new chapters on the complex journey of life.

B+C: How do you challenge yourself as an entrepreneur?

GK: I know in my heart I was meant to do this, and that crystal clear belief helps get me through the challenges. I do challenge myself to always follow my path and not get pulled or distracted by what others are doing, or every piece of advice that comes in. I also challenge myself to always come back to my purpose or mission and let that guide my next steps. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day busy-ness or intentions of others, so I think the hardest thing to do as an entrepreneur is to stay true.

I remember it’s my vision to build a movement for women — not just a business. The tools I use to keep that in sight aren’t what they teach you in business school. I take care of my body, walk in nature, put my phone away, and write in my journal. That’s where the real stuff happens.

B+C: One of your mom members, Bree Martin, says The Hivery is a great community with mentors to help her live her dreams. Did you create The Hivery with this sense of community in mind for working moms?

GK: I created The Hivery from a very honest place inside me that felt like I needed more support, more possibility, more inspiration from other women. I couldn’t find that in a way that also integrated with my work and my desire to create my own next chapter. I certainly created The Hivery to solve this problem, and yes, it definitely meets a major need that moms have. However, the desire to feel like your work and contribution to the world matters is universal. Moms are pulled in so many different directions that it’s easy to lose sight of it, but we all need to feel like we’re making a difference at the individual level whether or not we are mothers, too.

B+C: What’s the best advice you’ve ever gotten?

GK: “Do the next, right thing.” I learned that from Glennon Doyle’s book Love Warrior. It’s become a mantra for me and is a great way of quieting the “overwhelms” that go along with growing a business. You don’t have to do all the things at once. You just need to do the next, right thing.

B+C: Name two female heroes who you think should get a shout-out.

GK: Oprah. I adore you, Oprah! You have taught me to explore myself and continue the quest for making the biggest difference that I can in this short time on the planet. We have a running joke among The Hivery team, because I often ask them, “What would Oprah do?”

And, my younger sister, Maggie. She’s a young, beautiful, creative, vegan, food-loving 33-year old, who is battling stage three breast cancer. She’s taught me that a positive spirit goes a long way, and that honesty when things really suck, is the right course too. She can make jokes with the chemotherapy nurse that she better put margaritas in her IV bag, and then in the same breath is willing to be really honest about the difficulties of her situation. It’s the willingness to do both that I think is the truest strength of a woman. She’s finding out who she really is and digging deep to get to know her fiercely strong, yet vulnerable self, all through a process that is scary and unknown. Being by her side on the journey that is, indeed, real life, has been a massively impactful learning experience for me; and one that has taught me we’re never done revealing the depth of who we really are.

B+C: If you could tell aspiring creative women anything, what would it be?

GK: Your life is a creative process. There is no finish line and no defined outcome. You’re the one who feels like she’s standing on the edge of the cliff with nerves in your stomach and wings on your back. You’re the one who noticed that fear and exhilaration live in the same place in your belly. It’s you who knows that you have to keep going. It’s you who knows that you love getting advice, but ultimately you already know.

We need you right now. We need you more than your fears and more than your hiding strategies. The time is now; you are the one.

Vision boards are one of the most effective tools that you can use to build your business, your life, and your hobbies and I'm so excited to get my 2025 vision board going! Thoughtfully done, this process brings shape to dreams and emotions you're aiming for in the weeks and months ahead. Simply going through the process can bring clarity to your thinking, focus to your plans, and can leave you with a curated visual + tangible reminder of the life you want to build. But not only is the finished product fun to look at — the process is fun to make!

Here's how to get started to create your own vision board for 2025.

SUPPLIES

Brit + Co

Surface

I love white or black foam core board for creating vision boards. There are LOADS of sizes and options for this, so have fun picking the right one for you.

Adhesive

Glue sticks, Washi tape or pushpins work equally well. I prefer something non-permanent so I can revise my board as the year moves along.

Cutting tools

X-acto knife, ruler, scissors or a paper cutter are all great tools to have on hand.

Images

Magazines, old books, photographs all work well.

Set the vibe

A good playlist to inspire creative vibes, a big work area (floors work great for this!) and light some candles to keep it dreamy and inspiring.

Nosh and nourish

A cheese board, some wine, and good chocolate. All things are better with chocolate, right?

GET TO MAKING

Brit + Co

Set an intention. Or many.

I like to make one vision board for my entire world — work, family, love, hobbies, wellness, travel. Others prefer to have a separate vision board for each area of their life, or to only focus on one for the entire year. Let your intuition guide you here and decide the best approach for you. Really think about what you want to accomplish in the coming year. What emotions do you want to feel more of? Less of? How do you want to live?

You might find it best to journal about this prior to starting the image-gathering process to really bring clarity to mind. This intentional thinking will be important as you select images for your 2025 vision board. Try some Winter Journal Prompts For Improving Your Relationship or go for Emma Watson's Daily Journal Prompts!

Brit + Co

Curate images.

Find images that support your intention, and the life you want to build in the year ahead. Images should not just portray the WHAT of what you want, but also the EMOTION. The colors, people, and objects that show up on your final board should bring a smile to your face. I collect LOTS of images in a Pinterest board when I'm in the intention setting phase to have an abundance to choose from as I start my planning. Great resources for images are favorite blogs, Pinterest, Instagram, and Unsplash — really any image that speaks to you is vision board worthy.

Brit + Co

Build your 2025 vision board.

A reminder, this board is JUST FOR YOU so arrange the images in a way that speaks to your soul. You could organize each area by focus (work or home, for example.) Or let the colors of the images guide you in how they are arranged. There is no right or wrong way to do this — so just arrange and rearrange until you find what works for you. Stick the images to your surface once you've found a layout that you love.

Brit + Co

Find a home for your board.

Pick a spot in your home or workspace that you'll see your board regularly. The magic of this work comes in not just the building, but the visual reminder it gives you to give your time, energy, and resources to the things that support the life you want to build.

Brit + Co

Review often.

I'm a big fan of viewing these boards as evolving pieces of work. Take time to review it often and rearrange, add, or remove as needed to keep it as aspirational and inspiring as you need to move you toward your goals.

Giving yourself space, time, and a creative outlet to dream about your future is such a gift. One that can bring more positivity, intention, and purpose to your year ahead.

She can often be found making art and messes alongside her daughter and Goldendoodle puppy.

You'd think someone with acne-prone skin wouldn't buy viral beauty finds without doing thorough research, but I'm not above trying to recreate all the latest makeup trends at home. All this did was remind me that everything isn't for everyone — and that's okay! Well...it's not okay I fee like I wasted money, but at least I know what to stay away from. And now I'm here to help you figure out what to avoid as well!

Even though this products didn't work for me, that doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't use them. These are just my least faves of the year — take 'em or leave 'em!

Here are all the overrated beauty finds I wish I wouldn't have bought

Amazon

1. MILK Hydro Grip Primer

I should've known better than to buy this again, but I wanted to see if my skin would react better to it. The first time I tried to use this, I broke out along my jaws in tiny, red bumps. They were itchy and eventually turned into dark spots that took me over a year to get rid of.

Instead of letting that be the red flag that kept me away from this beauty find, I decided to use it in place of my trusted e.l.f. Cosmetics Power Grip Primer I've been relying on. Two things happened:

  1. It created a beautiful base for my makeup.
  2. I didn't break out, but my faced still felt itchy.

I even switched my makeup brushes and checked to make sure other makeup products weren't expired. The culprit continued to be this primer so it's made it to my overrated list.

Amazon

2. KORA Organics Kakadu Plum Vitamin C Serum

I was initially sent this to test, but I decided to buy it myself to see if I truly like it. While it was easy to add to my skincare routine lineup, I realized I actually didn't need to spend $70+ for an effective Vitamin C serum. The only difference between this serum and the one I truly love are their colors and textures.

This one has a slightly yellowish-orange tint to it while being a little thicker compared to the Timeless Skin Care Vitamin C serum I use. The latter is thinner and 100% transparent, plus the odor is slightly stronger. However, both of them aid in smoother skin, smaller pores, and a healthy glow.

I honestly wouldn't buy this one again just because I can get the same benefits for a lesser price.

Amazon

3.NYX Cosmetics Fat Oil Lip Drip

This is a controversial take, but I honestly didn't love the NYX Fat Oil Lip Drip. Although I love the color payoff, it was too sticky for my liking. I saw reviews that mentioned this, but I've purchased lip glosses other people didn't love that worked for me in the past. However, the reviews are telling the truth: the stickiness takes away from what could've been a great formula.

I'll just stick to my Tower 28 Lip Softie Hydrating Lip Treatment in Ube Vanilla!

Amazon

4. L'Oréal Voluminous Panorama Washable Mascara

I know people love this beauty find because it is great. I just didn't think the hype was enough to convince me to buy it again because my essence Lash Princess False Lash Effect Mascara gets the job done for $5. I will say I love the washable feature of L'Oréal's version, but it's still not enough to make me willingly spend over $10 for it.

As great of a product as this is, it's overrated to me because of the price tag.

Sephora

5. Haus Labs Triclone Skin Tech Medium Coverage Foundation

Sigh...it's so hard for me to admit this, but this Haus Labs foundation has become my most overrated beauty find of 2024. It's not that it doesn't work for a few hours, but my skin prefers tinted moisturizers more than anything. I talked about it briefly on TikTok, but skin tints feel like you're not wearing anything on your face.

I'm always really oily after wearing this foundation for a few hours, but I can get extended wear out of the Danessa Myricks Yummy Skin Tint I've been wearing. I like to think it's because it has vegan collagen, ceramides, and cactus extract in it whereas this foundation has ingredients like fermented arnica in it.

Both do a great job of calming inflammation, but something about this foundation makes my skin think it's incredibly dry.

No matter how much effort we put into relaxing after a long day — whether through meditation, fitness, or a hot bath — sometimes we just don’t have the time or energy to commit to going to the gym or focusing on breath work. Personally, the last thing I want to do when I’m trying to de-stress is stare at a screen. I spend my entire day looking at screens, and my eyes and brain simply can’t handle another pixel. That’s why I opt for screen-free activities like reading, crocheting, or, better yet, coloring before bed to wind down.

Now you may be wondering, does coloring ACTUALLY have a positive impact on your mental health? We spoke to Dr. Caroline Fenkel, a licensed therapist and Chief Clinical Officer at Charlie Health, to getting better understand of just how much the simple act of coloring can actually do to relieve stress.

Are adult coloring books good for mental health?

Lada Balakireva

Coloring offers many benefits for mental health, particularly in reducing stress and anxiety after a long day of work or school. Similar to meditating, coloring allows us to focus our mind and engage in mindfulness. Dr Fenkel explains, "The repetitive motion of filling in shapes with color can soothe your mind, allowing you to temporarily set aside worries or stressors that might be weighing you down."

Because the activity itself is very low stakes, it is a perfect way to unwind. You can focus as much or as little as you like, and for however long you choose. "When choosing colors and filling in a design, your brain can take a break from the overthinking that often contributes to stress," Dr. Fenkel says. "It’s a way of giving yourself permission to pause, slow down, and reconnect with a sense of calm."

Not only does it help with de-stressing, it can also contribute to help processing your emotions. "The creative expression involved in coloring can also help you process emotions. Even though it might seem simple, the colors you choose and how you apply them can reflect your inner state," according to Dr. Fenkel.

"Coloring isn’t just a pleasant pastime, but also a small but effective tool for managing stress, nurturing mental well-being, and cultivating peace in a busy world, " Dr. Fenkel says.

So sit back, relax, grab your markers or pencils, and start coloring!

Studio McGee has spent the last decade inspiring us with a blend of accessible and elevated designs, creating beautiful and totally livable spaces. In her 2025 Home Decor Trends report, Shea McGee emphasizes that home decor trends evolve gradually over time, and I couldn’t agree more. Unlike the fast-paced world of fashion, where trends shift every season, these design moves develop organically over time, and that's good for your wallet and taking your time to create a space you love. Get inspired to refresh your home in 2025 with a few new accents, from embellishments like fringe to maybe a little western or seaside art.

Here are Studio McGee's 2025 Home Decor Trend Predictions, with a few surprises!

Photo: Shade Degges | Design: Studio Mountain

Romantic Silhouettes

Take Romantic Silhouettes, for example. This is a trend we've seen steadily gain traction over the past few years. Think curvy furniture, delicate floral prints, and soft blush hues — when curated thoughtfully, these elements can become timeless staples in your home.

Western Cowboy

This is a design trend that totally surprised me, but I'm so happy to see it in the mix. Elements like leather furniture, rustic accessories, equestrian art, even wood walls, shown in this office designed by A1000XBetter, are making an impact in 2025 and beyond. But Shea notes that you can take this trend literally or just be inspired by the look. You can also mix it with other styles to personalize it for you. Add romantic pillows or ruffled tablecloths like McGee & Co. x Loeffler Randall Gardenia Ruffle Border Tablecloth – things you love that make it yours vs. based solely on one trend.

Gavin Carter| Design: House of Rolison

Saturated Colors

Shea predicts that rich hues like deep browns, oxblood red, and earthy greens will continue to dominate home decor colors going into 2025. House of Rolison's bathroom brown is an excellent example of this beautiful trend.

courtesy of Stewart-Schafer

Pattern Drenching

Embracing a single pattern and drenching an entire room in it — from walls to pillows, headboards, and curtains — is a surprise trend for 2025. This maximalist approach, which has been quietly gaining traction, draws inspiration from Arts and Crafts designers like William Morris and has been in and out of vogue since the Victorian era.

McGee & Co.

Embellishments

This is a trend you can easily DIY to add an extra layer of charm to your decor. Think playful details like fringe accents —beautifully shown in McGee & Co.'s Philippa Settee — along with tassels, pleats, ruffles, and rope. It’s all about embracing texture and whimsy, so have fun with it!

McGee & Co.

Seaside Inspiration

Coastal decor has long been an influence in design and you can be inspired by it in many forms, from shell accents to beach-inspired artwork like McGee & Co.'s Distant Coastline art to textured seagrass baskets and jute rugs. Even the soothing hues of the sea — think soft blues, sandy neutrals, and gentle greens — can inspire your 2025 spaces.
