You Can Order Your Entire Holiday Feast from Whole Foods — and It’s Pretty Epic

For most of the year, the kitchen is the ideal spot to unwind with a glass of wine and a favorite recipe. Come December, though, when you’ve got a calendar full of holiday parties and a house abuzz with family and friends, it can be most relaxing to leave the cooking to the pros. We recently discovered that Whole Foods offers an epic ready-to-heat holiday feast for pick-up. You can order à la carte appetizer platters, sides, mains, and desserts — or choose a whole spread — online via the Whole Foods’ shopping site, and pick up your loot at the Whole Foods nearest you. Offerings vary by region, but the festive feasts below are available across the country.

Didn’t get enough turkey at Thanksgiving? You can make up for lost bites with one of Whole Foods’ five different turkey feasts. We’d go with the Organic Roast Turkey Dinner for Eight ($160), which includes a completely organic spread from roast turkey and gravy to creamy mashed potatoes, traditional herb stuffing, cranberry orange sauce, and creamed spinach and kale.

Chef Jeremy Fox teamed up with Whole Foods to create a vegan holiday feast inspired by recipes from his critically acclaimed restaurant, Rustic Canyon in San Francisco, CA, and his cookbook, On Vegetables ($50). His sophisticated Vegan Meal for Two ($40) includes romanesco cauliflower roast with miso bagna cauda, cremini mushroom stuffing with kimchi, charred escarole with tomatoes and chickpeas, roasted acorn squash with maple and hazelnut dukkah, and frosted sweet potato blondies with spiced cashews.

Prime rib and ham often make their way onto holiday spreads post Thanksgiving. We tried the chain’s showstopping Primer Rib Dinner for Eight ($230), and we’re still thinking about the roasted salt and pepper prime rib with green peppercorn sauce, creamed spinach and kale, maple-roasted Brussels sprouts with pepitas, and roasted fingerling potatoes with garlic and parsley. Also on the menu:

  • Spiral-Sliced Ham Dinner for Eight ($130): spiral-sliced ham with maple-mustard glaze, mashed citrus sweet potatoes, green beans with crispy garlic and parsley, and southern cornbread dressing

If you’re hosting or attending a dinner for a big crowd with widely varying tastes, fret not. Here are two group-friendly feasts with something for everyone:

Wine, cheese, and dessert

Because you should definitely start your meal with cheese, enjoy it with wine, and end it with dessert, we highly suggest hitting your local Whole Foods for tasty pairings. As far as dessert, all Whole Foods locations will sell Sister Pie’s Cranberry Crumble Pie ($14), which has an all-butter crust, cranberry compote filling, grated pear and warm spices, and an oat crumble topping.

The alcohol section at Trader Joe’s is about to quake in fear of me, because they just dropped a drink based on their very best dessert. And trust me, I can verify that – it’s a sweet treat I enjoy pretty much every single day. Now that I know it’s coming in a sippable form (and alcoholic, nonetheless!) I will need approximately 20 cans to stock up.

Yep, I’m speechless. Trader Joe’s just put a Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter on their shelves, and it looks insane. Going off the design of the cans, it’s quite obviously based on the grocer’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups – a treat I keep in my cupboard no matter what.

I’m not kidding when I say I eat this TJ’s dessert on the daily, either. The cups come in the perfect small size for snacking that I typically peel one open after lunch, and one after dinner for a perfectly-dosed treat. Other than that, I think these cups pair wonderfully with vanilla ice cream as a topping, or even chopped up and baked into cookies!

Back to the porter, though. Per photos shared by Trader Joe’s fan account, @traderjoesnew, the drink is an “imperial porter with peanut butter and natural flavors." The 16-ounce cans are sold in a 4-pack for $15, and each one measures 9.2% alcohol by volume. Whew! One drink will absolutely set you right.

Similar to stouts, porters are famously known for their rich, malty flavor profile with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, and caramel – so it’s only right that TJ’s whipped up this peanut butter cup-inspired bev.

Some Trader Joe’s fans that caught @traderjoesnew’s post about the porter flavor weighed in on the new launch.

“Honestly these were really good,” one person said.

“I love sweets and dark beer; did these beers in my 20’s but in my 40’s there’s way too much going on in this,” another shopper commented. “My suggestion: share the pint with 2-3 others. It will be a boozy sweet bomb.”

Lately, I’ve been paying closer attention to my grocery receipts. It’s not just the price of eggs — everything feels more expensive, and it's made me think more intentionally about how to make my food last longer. I’ve always hated wasting food. Not only is it tough on the planet, it’s tough on my budget, too. Americans toss out about 38 percent of our food — that’s the equivalent of 145 billion meals ending up in landfills (yikes!). Sure, a big chunk of that comes from restaurants, but even at home, being mindful of waste feels like a win for both the environment and my wallet.

So, instead of putting my groceries away haphazardly, I want to make sure I'm storing everything exactly how — and where — it should go. Luckily, I've learned there are some foods that actually last longer outside of the fridge. And they might surprise you!

1. Cucumbers

I have never left cucumbers outside the fridge, but it turns out that this can cause them to become too watery. Instead, find an airtight containerand store them in your pantry or countertop. Then toss them in this colorful Greek Salad!

2. Bell Peppers

Stashing bell peppers in the fridge can actually make them lose their crunch (who knew?). For peak crispness, keep them at room temperature and enjoy within one to two days. If you're not planning to eat them that quickly, pop them in the fridge to help prevent them from going soft too soon.

3. Basil

Store your basil as you would a fresh bouquet of flowers, in a jar with water. Cold temps can cause basil leaves to turn black, so it’s better off out of the fridge.

4. Butter (And Peanut Butter!)

According to the USDA, butter is best used within a day or two at room temperature to preserve its flavor. When I lived in San Francisco, I could leave it out on the counter year-round without worrying about it melting. Now that I’m in a hotter climate, I keep it out most of the year — just not during the peak of summer. Peanut butter also does well at room temperature, staying smooth and spreadable for up to three months (after which you'll need to refrigerate it).

5. Tomatoes

I grew tomatoes in my garden for the first time last year, and nothing beats the taste of one plucked straight from the vine. To keep that juicy , sun-ripened flavor going, store your tomatoes at room temperature on the counter — not in the fridge. Cold temps can dull their flavor and texture. 6. Avocados

A friend and I were debating whether avocados belong in the fridge — turns out, they don’t. At least, not until they’re ripe. I eat one almost every day, so I go through them fast, but once they ripen, I pop them in the fridge to slow down the over-ripening. If you’re craving Avocado Toast, stash them in a paper bag to speed things up, or just let them ripen naturally in an open container on the counter.

7. Fresh Bread

If you want to get the most flavor (and life) out of your fresh bread, skip the fridge. Refrigeration actually speeds up staling. Instead, store it in a bread box or basket — somewhere that blocks light but still lets it breathe. Planning to eat it the same day? Leaving it uncovered at room temperature works just fine. Otherwise, a paper bag or the freezer are your best options.

8. Potatoes (Sweet or Otherwise)

I like to keep my potatoes and onions tucked away in the pantry where it’s cool and dark. Storing them in a paper bag at room temperature helps preserve their texture and flavor. The fridge might seem like a good idea, but it can actually do more harm than good — the moisture makes potatoes overly sweet and kind of gritty, and the humidity can cause them to mold more quickly.

9. Onions & Garlic

Onions, shallots, and garlic can become moldy when exposed to the high humidity of the refrigerator. Store them in a relatively cool, dry place in your pantry or a cabinet that’s not exposed to light.
