20 Tips for Hosting a Vegan Guest for Dinner

With so many different diets out there — Paleo, vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian — it can be confusing as a host to know what exactly your guests can and can not eat (hint: How about these snacks?). If your newest book club member is vegan, don’t fret that you’ll have nothing to feed her when you normally bust out a crowd-pleasing cheese platter. It’s okay if you’re drawing a blank, but before you grab the takeout menus and order a giant cheese-less pizza, allow us to share some very simple hacks to make a dairy-free and meatless meal easy peasy.

1. Vegan blogs are your friends. There are tons of great vegan recipes available at the click of a button. If you’re a total newbie at plant-based cooking, check out Minimalist Baker, Post Punk Kitchen and Happy Healthy Life.

2. Pick up vegan appetizers. Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods have a plethora of vegan goods. Speculoos cookies are accidentally vegan and not accidentally delicious. TJ’s coconut milk ice cream is da bomb (go for the chocolate because it’s awesome). Whole Foods baked goods section usually has vegan donuts, muffins, pies and more. Raid the vegan cheese section at Whole Foods for a cheese platter that will wow your favorite herbivore.

3. Find a local bakery that serves vegan pastries. Buy vegan cupcakes. Earn major brownie points.

4. Serve a kickass salad. Salad doesn’t have to be iceberg lettuce with a few soggy croutons. We recommend this kale salad with crispy chickpeas or this farmers market cobb salad with spiced sweet potatoes.

5. Guacamole and hummus are vegan and delicious. Serve freshly cut veggies like red pepper slices, cucumber slices and carrot sticks alongside pita chips with a garlicky hummus, or make a big bowl of guacamole (may we suggest Chipotle’s addictive avo dip?).

6. Whip up a batch of vegan dark chocolate truffles. It only takes five steps to woo your soon-to-be boyfriend or girlfriend with these romantic treats.

7. Throw a make-your-own pizza party. Buy pre-made pizza dough, get some pizza sauce and, when it comes to toppings, go crazy. Think dried figs, arugula, green olives, vegan bacon slices and some shredded vegan cheese.

8. Buy or make a loaf of bread and serve it with a nice olive oil. Easiest appetizer ever! (And yes, most breads are vegan except for anything eggy like challah).

9. If you’re a foodie, try your hand at making more complicated recipes over at Olives for Dinner. We highly suggest the Cheese-Stuffed Homemade Ravioli with White Wine Sauce.

10. Four words: vegan ice cream bar. Make your own homemade coconut milk ice cream or grab a few pints from your local health food store. Serve with shredded coconut, crushed Oreos (which are accidentally vegan), vegan marshmallows (Dandies or Sweet and Sara are great) and this five-ingredient salted caramel sauce and you’re all set.

11. Check out a vegan cookbook from your local library. There are hundreds of fantastic cookbooks out there. Popular vegan cookbook authors like Isa Chandra Moskowitz, Chloe Coscarelli and Terry Hope Romero have delicious recipes that are guaranteed to be a success at any dinner party. Isa Does It is chock-full of great recipes for beginners.

12. Veganize your favorite recipes. Have a great marinara sauce recipe? Great. Pair it with these 10-ingredient meatless meatballs and your favorite pasta. Done-zo. Want to bake your favorite cake or cookies? Here’s an easy guide to substitute for eggs.

13. Bust out your grill. If you’re hosting a barbecue, and you’re thinking, “What does a vegan eat at a barbecue?,” here’s your answer. Grilled tofu tacos go way beyond the standard veggie burger. (Photo via Love + Lemons)

14. Ask them for their favorite recipe, then make it. There’s nothing vegans like more than sharing what they love to eat. We’ve dedicated entire Instragram accounts to our love of food.

15. Make it easy on ourself. If you’re really kitchen averse, these super simple vegan blogs — The Vegan Stoner and Thug Kitchen — break it down for you so that you can look like a star chef. The Vegan Stoner has cute illustrations and step-by-step instructions so the recipes are guaranteed to be foolproof.

16. Turn to YouTube. Vegan cooking stars abound on YouTube, and they show you how to master some killer recipes. The Vegan Zombie teaches you how to make a burrito bowl, a Southern kale salad with a smokey Ranch dressing and more. If you’re more into the healthy aspects of the plant-based lifestyle, Carolyn Scott-Hamilton has a great Healthy Voyager TV channel complete with cucumber dill margaritas, Southwest quinoa salad and Caesar salad.

17. Order some (Chipotle) burritos. Chipotle offers vegan sofritas, a tasty blend of shredded tofu and spices, as one of its options. The sofritas are available at all Chipotle locations after a successful rollout in California.

18. Go crazy with an awesome dessert. If you’re wondering what you can serve beyond sliced apples, here are 16 scrumptious vegan desserts that will have your entire dinner party demanding seconds and thirds.

19. Serve breakfast for dinner. Brunch doesn’t only need to doled out on weekend afternoons. Flip some Pineapple Upside Down Pancakes for your herbivore guests. Ladle out some Maple-Spice Ginger Cookie Breakfast Risotto (yes, please) or crank out some warm Gingerbread Waffles.

20. Hit up your local farmers market. Besides snagging the best seasonal produce, there are often health-conscious vendors selling everything from vegan cheese to homemade almond butter. There’s nothing better than eating locally made goods.

Audiences loved the way Greta Gerwig's Little Women brought all four March sisters to life, and Netflix's Anne with an E became so popular that when the show was canceled after season 3, 1.7 million fans signed a petition to revive the series. It all just proves that classic adaptations can make the original story even more powerful.

And the newest movie based on a book is going to be one we think about forever — and not just because of its cast. Emerald Fennell (who you'll recognize from The Crown and her work as writer & director on Satburn) is adapting Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights and Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi are leading the cast!

The book, published in 1847, continues to grip readers, and it's become the blueprint for moody complexity — just like Emerald Fennell's Promising Young Woman, which won the Oscar for Best Screenplay thanks to its scathing look at sexual assault. Well, the Em's are coming together for this new adaptation.

Here's everything we know about Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights — and your first look at the movie.

Here's Your First Look At 'Wuthering Heights'

The first look at Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights is getting some seriously mixed reactions. The photo features a close-up image of someone (maybe Margot Robbie's) with their fingers and a few blades of grass in their mouth.

"CAN NOT WAIT," one Instagram user said, along with a couple fire emojis. But the intimate (and somewhat shocking) image also has some users asking, "what in the saltburn?"

Is Wuthering Heights going to be in theaters?

Focus Features

It appears director Emerald Fennell and producer Margot Robbie are pushing for a theatrical release, which is why they've reportedly turned down a Netflix offer of $150 million.

Despite the fact Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said theatrical releases are "just not our business," and the company has stuck to at-home streaming instead, they did break that pattern for Knives Out: Glass Onion in 2022. The movie appeared in around 600 theaters the day before Thanksgiving, but left a week later ahead of its December 23 debut on the streamer.

Co-CEO Reed Hastings told The Hollywood Reporter that keeping the movie in theaters could have made Netflix more money, but later said they just wanted to "break through the noise" and get movie lovers excited for the film to come to Netflix.

All that to be said, Margot Robbie (whose Barbie made over $1 billion worldwide) and Emerald Fennell (whose Promising Young Woman nabbed her an Oscar win and two other nominations) know how to capture the imaginations of movie lovers everywhere. And it could definitely be in their favor to stick to a theatrical release. Stay tuned for official news on where you can watch Wuthering Heights!

Wuthering Heights Cast

The Wuthering Heights movie will be led by Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie as Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, respectively. Margot will also produce with her production company LuckyChap, which worked behind the scenes on Emerald Fennell's Saltburn and Promising Young Woman.

While some fans were initially excited about the casting, others were concerned about the fact that in the book, Heathcliff is described as "dark skinned." He also tells Nelly that, "I wish I had light hair and a fair skin, and was dressed, and behaved as well, and had a chance of being as rich as he will be!" Um, it looks like Jacob Elordi definitely has fair skin to me.

"Heathcliff is described as a dark-skinned brown man in the book and a major plot point is that he was subjected to racist abuse by his adopted family," one tweet (which has over 8 million views) says. "But yeah sure Jacob Elordi is perfect!"

Another says, "Film studios will say 'We are committed to diverse casting' and then cast Jacob Elordi to play Heathcliff, one of the more famous people of color in literature, whose race is crucial to both his character and the story."

Check back here to see who will play characters like Edgar Linton, Nelly Dean, Isabella Linton, and Lockwood.

Wuthering Heights Plot

Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights follows the Earnshaws and the Lintons, who are living in the Yorkshire Moors in the 1880s. Their lives change forever when the Earnshaws take in Heathcliff. Like any good dramatic novel, passion lies beneath proper connections, marriages, and societal expectations — and despite Catherine and Heathcliffe's feelings for each other, they have to choose between security and love.

When you come across a cute dog up for adoption, it's extremely easy to get swept up by their adorable face and want to take them home on the spot. However, not all dogs are as low-maintenance as they might seem at first glance.

Certain breeds tend to come with a hefty price tag in terms of both time and money. From things like grooming needs to medical care, some dogs can leave new owners seriously surprised by all the hidden costs.

So, before you add a new furry friend to your family, it's important to educate yourself. Here are 12 dog breeds that may break the bank because of their surprisingly high-maintenance needs.

Scroll to see some of the most high-maintenance dog breeds you could get right now.

1. Labradoodle

Lars Mulder

While plenty of people love the characteristic Labradoodle affection and energy, these teddy bear dogs still require a decent amount of upkeep.

First of all, their high energy demands frequent exercise and mental stimulation, which can be time-consuming. Plus, their coats can be unpredictable, given that they're a mix of Poodle and Labrador.

That's why some Labradoodles might need daily grooming to prevent tangles and mats, while others will require professional grooming sessions.

2. French Bulldog

Rebecca Fogg

French Bulldogs may have an adorable and compact appearance, but their cute looks come with significant health and maintenance requirements.

Due to their short necks, flat faces, and stocky bodies, they often face a range of health problems, particularly brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), which affects their breathing.

This condition can result in expensive veterinary visits and pet insurance premiums. Aside from that, owners will need to clean their skin rolls regularly to avoid infections.

3. Siberian Husky

Julissa Helmuth

Siberian Huskies are extremely athletic, meaning a ton of exercise is necessary. They were bred to pull sleds for up to 100 miles every single day, so to remain happy and healthy, they require a significant amount of physical activity.

Additionally, they don't enjoy being left alone, meaning doggy daycare or a reliable pet sitter is often necessary. To top it off, their thick double coats shed year-round, and you may go through multiple vacuum cleaners just to keep your home clean.

4. Afghan Hound

Ron Lach

The Afghan Hound is a stunning breed, but its luxurious coat makes it super high-maintenance. To keep their fur in good shape, owners will have to brush daily and provide baths weekly, ensuring they carefully dry their pups with a blow dryer.

Regular oil treatments and meticulous wrapping are also needed, along with the use of snoods during mealtime to protect their hair.

5. Border Collie

Helena Lopes

Since Border Collies are so active and smart, they literally need boundless amounts of exercise and mental stimulation to keep them occupied.

These dogs excel when challenged, whether through obedience training or dog sports. If they're not kept on the move, Border Collies can become bored and a huge handful. They may act hyperactive, produce excessive noise, and get destructive.

6. Akita

Zen Chung

As working dogs, Akitas are independent, strong, and can be standoffish with strangers. Their aloof nature and protective instincts also mean they require consistent, firm training and plenty of socialization from a young age.

This breed is typically quiet, clean, and relatively easy to groom. Even so, they need substantial mental stimulation to remain well-behaved.

7. Giant Schnauzer

Brett Sayles

Even though Giant Schnauzers are affectionate, they also have a strong territorial nature, and firm training is essential from the start.

Regular grooming is a key part of their care as well, particularly around their faces. Their thick coats can become matted, and consistent brushing routines are important to maintain their well-being.

8. Tibetan Mastiff

Guang Niu/Getty Images

Tibetan Mastiffs are large dogs with strong-willed personalities that can make training a challenge. They tend to be calm and don't require a bunch of exercise, yet getting them to consistently listen to commands will take patience and persistence.

This breed is known for having an independent streak, and their territorial nature means they should always be kept on a leash during any outings.

9. Chow Chow

Sharmaine Monticalbo

Chow Chows are adorable, fluffy dogs that must be consistently groomed, and it's crucial that their grooming routine starts early. It should include regular baths, brushing, and blow drying to help them get accustomed to the process.

The thick fur around their faces can be particularly challenging to wash, but it's very important to keep the region clean to prevent matting, which can be painful.

10. Old English Sheepdog

Filip Kvasnak

Everyone loves Old English Sheepdogs because of their fluffy and friendly temperament. However, their coats call for a significant amount of upkeep.

Full-body brushing several times a week is needed to prevent matting. Or, for easier maintenance, their coat can be trimmed shorter on a regular basis.

Beyond grooming, these dogs are strong and athletic as well. Plenty of playtime and outdoor activity is key to keeping them healthy.

11. Australian Cattle Dog

Loli de Elia

Australian Cattle Dogs, also known as Blue Heelers, are tireless herding canines with a strong desire to run. They have a high prey drive and protective instincts, so they're best suited for owners with wide open spaces.

This breed needs to burn off its seemingly infinite energy and requires structure to stay well-behaved. Thankfully, though, their short coats are less maintenance-intensive.

12. Pekingese

Mert Ocak

Finally, Pekingese come with a hefty maintenance load due to their unique physical traits. They have short legs, flat noses, short necks, bulging eyes, and dense coats, which is why they tend to be expensive when it comes to both grooming and healthcare.

Owners should expect higher vet bills and pet insurance costs due to breed-specific health problems. Also, Pekingese are prone to overheating, so they'll need cool areas to rest during the warmer months and a tangle-free coat to allow proper airflow.

Any Hunger Games fan will agree that one of the best parts about Catching Fire is that it offers a whole new look at Haymitch Abernathy's character. The mentor (played by Woody Harrelson in the film franchise) won the 2nd Quarter Quell, and the brief mention of his Games totally captured fans' attention, leading to fan art, fanfiction, and even some viral short films. Well, we're finally getting the full story thanks to a brand new Haymitch Hunger Games book, just in time for spring 2025!

Here's everything we know about Sunrise On The Reaping, coming March 2025.

Who's narrating the audiobook?

Cam McLeod/Paramount

It was confirmed on February 3 that Yellowstone actor Jefferson White will narrate the Sunrise on the Reaping audiobook.

“It's an honor to be a small part of a world I’ve loved for so long — Suzanne Collins is a genius and it's equal parts exhilarating and terrifying to be back in Panem," he told People.

See The Official 'Sunrise On The Reaping' Cover

Amazon

The Sunrise on the Reaping cover was unveiled the morning of October 16 and it's just as beautiful as we hoped! It continues the tradition from the other books of a bold background color with gold and white accents, and I'll admit I was surprised when I first saw the snake and the mockingjay. The snake is obviously a nod to President Snow, and we know that both Lucy Gray Baird and Katniss Everdeen are two songbirds the President was never able to shake. Will Haymitch Abernathy become one as well?

In the original books, Haymitch starts out as an angry man with no friends or family who always has a drink in his hand, but by the end of Mockingjay, he's a wise, caring father figure for Katniss — and I'm betting Sunrise on the Reaping will show us plenty of those character traits as he has to make his way through the Hunger Games.

One detail on the cover that concerns me is the fact the snake and the songbird are connected, and that a sun sits between them. David Levithan, Scholastic's vice president, publisher, and editorial director told TODAY that just like the other covers, this one features "one of the central themes of the series: how conflicting forces can be connected by their common nature, the songbird and the snake springing from the same source."

When is Sunrise on the Reaping coming out?

Lionsgate

Sunrise on the Reaping will hit stores on March 18, 2025.

What is the Sunrise on the Reaping going to be about?

Scholastic/Instagram

The new Hunger Games book is called Sunrise on the Reaping. According to the official announcement, the story will take place 24 years before The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the 50th Games' reaping. While fans had hoped the story would chronicle Haymitch's victory, it wasn't confirmed until October 16. Read the full synopsis below:

"As the day dawns on the 50th annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes. Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves. When Haymitch’s name is called, he can feel all his dreams break. He’s torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who’s nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town. As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he’s been set up to fail. But there’s something in him that wants to fight ... and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena."

Can you preorder Sunrise on the Reaping?

Murray Close/Lionsgate

Yes, you can pre-order the book now!

What happened in Haymitch's Hunger Games?

Lionsgate

As a Quarter Quell, the 50th Hunger Games had a twist. Just like the 75th Hunger Games pulled the tributes from the existing victors, the 50th required double the tributes, meaning Haymitch (who was 16 years old at the time) was one of 48 tributes, not 24.

The arena was a breathtaking landscape with a forest, snow-capped mountains, and beautiful flowers. But Haymitch quickly realized the beauty was a trap, and that everything in the arena was poisonous. He was able to outsmart the rest of the competitors, but after he used the forcefield against the other remaining tribute to secure his victory (a move that offended the Capitol), President Snow retaliated by killing his family and his girlfriend.

Is Sunrise on the Reaping about Haymitch?

Murray Close/Lionsgate

Yes, Sunrise on the Reaping is about Haymitch Abernathy and his win during the 50th Hunger Games.

Jeremiah Brent has an amazing knack for making spaces feel luxe but also totally livable. His modern-vintage aesthetic creates really timeless, soulful spaces I love. One of my favorite reality shows, Queer Eye, is lucky to have him as their newest member and interior designer. I chatted with Jeremiah this week about all things design, reality TV, his life with partner Nate Berkus (plus a few lovely wedding design tips), and his pantry organization hacks.

Also, you can score a pantry makeover with Jeremiah, thanks to Almond Breeze. Find the sweepstakes details below!

Here's what Jeremiah Brent shared with us about decor, Queer Eye, and life with Nate Berkus in an exclusive interview!

Jeremiah Brent

Your aesthetic is known for being sophisticated yet warm. What’s your best piece of advice for someone looking to make their home feel more personal?

Jeremiah: Theresa, that's my life mission with design. It’s become super-prescriptive design. The most memorable rooms and homes I've ever been in had nothing to do with how much money they spent or if it was from Architectural Digest, it just looked like them.

My biggest piece of advice would be: Really think about the moments in your day that matter most to you. Are you an early morning person who needs coffee? Are you an evening person who wants to lie down and watch TV, or are you somebody who's very ceremonial?

Do you have a spot to read a book and have a glass of wine at night? If you start creating your space for your moments instead of for other people, it just changes the way you move through your own house.

Nate & Jeremiah by Design gave viewers a glimpse into your life with Nate and your family — what was it like working so closely with your partner on screen?

Jeremiah: He's my favorite person in the world. I mean, it's not easy to work with a spouse. It can really make or break you, but my husband has always believed in my talent and my perspective creatively and we have a lot of respect for each other. What it represented was us being able to show a family like ours to the world that maybe they didn't have access to, and it was really important and I'm really proud of it. It's also this beautiful timeline of the first 10 years of our lives as a family.

Netflix

Now you’re joining Queer Eye. What’s something about working on reality TV home makeovers that people might not realize?

Jeremiah: This is going to be a weird thing to say, but I don't think people realize how real Queer Eye is. I've worked on a lot of reality television, which is aging me tremendously. [laughs] Queer Eye is different. I mean, I sat there every week watching people walk into new versions of themselves. It's an interesting thing when you see somebody the way they want to be seen and then you watch them change the way they see themselves. I got to watch my dearest friends do what they do and it was just wild. You can't produce that kind of energy.

What's one of your favorite moments on the show?

Jeremiah: There was a woman named Jen'ya who is a single mother and I was raised by a single mother, and it was particularly impactful for me because it's everything you wish you could have done for your mother growing up. To be able to have that full circle moment and say, "I know exactly what you're going through" and every chance you just can't seem to get, that felt really good.

Netflix

Let’s talk weddings. What’s one design element from Say I Do that you’d love to see more couples incorporate into their own celebrations?

Jeremiah: The people that they love, which is a weird thing to say, but I think so much about weddings becomes about the conventional, like flowers and this and that. That personalized component makes it just this really beautiful, holistic, important thing. In our wedding we tried to incorporate the people that were really part of the fabric of our lives because we wouldn't have been there without them.

What are some ways that you and Nate incorporated your closest people?

Jeremiah: My mother's recipes for our desserts, certain flowers from my grandparents, certain smells. We incorporated photos in different areas. My sister sang at our wedding, which was super special. Tons of different little things, like little nods to people we love.

What’s one design trend that makes you cringe?

Jeremiah: Acrylic furniture because of fingerprints and dust. But I support people who have it, it’s just not for me.

Enter To Win A Pantry Makeover From Jeremiah!

Jeremiah Brent

  • Terms & Conditions: Must be 18 or older to enter. Must be U.S.-based, excluding Alaska and Hawaii.

Given this sweepstakes, what are your best organizational hacks for the pantry?

Jeremiah: I think the pantry becomes kind of a catch-all for everything. And the next thing you know, half of it's expired. It kind of becomes like a pit where things go to die. In our own house, I'm constantly editing, even if it's just changing where things are spatially in the pantry, moving them around a little bit forces you to go through things and reassess them. And lighting. Buy simple, really inexpensive LED strip lighting that you can attach to the top of your pantry inside and light. It makes a world of a difference.

Netflix

Why you decided to partner with Almond Breeze. Do you have a go-to recipe or favorite beverage?

Jeremiah: We're really aligned for a lot of different reasons. They are crafted obviously from the best Blue Diamond almonds. They're all about sustainability. The fact that it's this wholesome plant-based almondmilk. We use it in smoothies, cereals, Poppy [my daughter] just used it in her cereal this morning. You know, life is crazy and busy and I'm traveling all the time and I love that I don't have to worry in two weeks if I need to get rid of it because it’s shelf stable. It's just a matter of aligning with a company that their priorities are in the same place as mine, as a father and as a husband.

Do you like to cook?

Jeremiah: Love to cook. It's my favorite. I love the ceremony of it, preparing something and then people coming together and then watching them eat it. It's the best.

What's your go-to recipe that's not a beverage?

Jeremiah: I'll give you two. I make a weeknight bolognese, but I actually think the recipe is from Ina Garten because I'm obsessed with her. And then I do a jalapeño pomegranate glazed ham for the holidays, which sounds like a lot of flavor and very fancy, but it's really easy and it's so good.
