5 Houseplants Every Beauty Lover Needs

Houseplants have received a lot of social media attention lately, and for good reason. Not only do they make any space look like a million bucks, but they also add a pop of color to neutral color schemes and come with loads of health and skin care benefits too.

That’s right, skin care benefits. As it turns out, cities aren’t the only environments that can wreak havoc on our favorite organ — our homes can as well! Thanks to air pollutants such as cleaning chemicals, dust, and other nasty toxins, our sacred spaces are chock-full of free radicals that can promote premature signs of aging and more. Fortunately for our vanity, many houseplants are skin care superheroes that work to purify the air and create the ideal environment for healthy, glowing skin.

“Air-purifying plants are extremely beneficial to the skin,” says Alissia Zenhausern, AKA Dr. Zen, a board-certified naturopathic physician in Scottsdale, Arizona. “[The] skin is not only the largest organ in our body, but it is also a major organ of detoxification. Plants help reduce our toxin body burden, meaning our body doesn’t have to work as hard to detox,” she adds. “Improper detoxification can lead to dull, dry, and aging skin.” (Photo via jacqylaw/Getty)

With that in mind, Zenhausern recommends adding air-purifying houseplants to the home. She notes that houseplants aren’t just good for purifying the air — they can provide stress relief, amp up oxygen, reduce carbon dioxide, increase humidity, reduce airborne dust levels, and lower indoor air temperatures too.

Looking for a houseplant that is both Instagram-worthy and beauty-benefiting? Keep reading for our favorites.

1. Snake Plant: If you’re looking for a houseplant that boasts anti-pollution vibes and is hard to kill, head over to your local nursery and get yourself a snake plant, STAT!

“Snake plant, also known as mother-in-law’s tongue, is one of the best air purifying plants out there,” says Zenhausern. “While most plants take away oxygen at night for their own use, Snake Plants give off oxygen at night, which makes them great air purifiers.”

Because Snake Plants release oxygen at night, they can be ultra-beneficial to your beauty sleep (while the skin regenerates, the plant purifies the air), so adding one to your bedroom is a must. Snake Plants prefer indirect light but can tolerate most light conditions (we told you they’re hard to kill!) and don’t need frequent watering. Make sure the soil dries between watering and feed it some fertilizer in the summer months. (Photo via Latvian/Getty)

Important side note: Zenhausern says snake plants are toxic to pets and children and advises against this beauty-benefiting houseplant if you have small children or pets that could chew on the plant.

2. Aloe Vera: If you want to add some variety to your impossible-to-kill plant collection, aloe vera is another great option. “The thick gel substance obtained by the aloe vera leaves are especially useful for wound healing, treating burns, psoriasis, and even frostbite,” Zenhausern explains. “Aloe vera contains both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that are ideal for skin-related conditions.”

You can cut the leaves open and use the gel for a multitude of ailments, including dry skin, sunburn, and rashes. Because the gel is so soothing, it provides instant relief to the skin and helps quench dry skin. Apply the gel directly to your complexion (avoiding your eyes) for a post-beach facial or use the gel on dry, rough areas caused by harsh winter weather.

For aloe vera, having a green thumb doesn’t matter — so long as you don’t over water it. When placed inside, it loves natural, indirect sunlight and typically prefers to hang out in a south- or west-facing window. Like snake plants, wait for the soil to dry completely before watering. (Photo via Natalija Milosevic /EyeEm/Getty)

3. Dracaena: Add some funky tropical vibes to your home with a dracaena plant. The palm-like houseplant is part of the tree and succulent shrub family and boasts some stellar benefits. “According to the NASA Clean Air Study, Dracaena reflexa is one of the most efficient plants at removing formaldehyde from the air in your home,” Zenhausern notes. And, that’s not the only carcinogen it wards off. In addition to formaldehyde, dracaena can keep benzene, trichloroethylene, and xylene at bay.

So long as it has plenty of indirect sunlight — it’s also cool with medium light — and humidity, dracaena will thrive in any room in the house. If you live in a climate with lower humidity, misting the leaves can help keep it happy. You can also place the plant pot on a small tray filled with pebbles and water for a customized climate. (Only the best for our plant babies!) Dracaena is a bit snobby when it comes to water quality and doesn’t respond well to the salt and fluoride found in tap water; it’s best to water with rainwater or distilled water. (Photo via elenaleonova/Getty)

Important side note: Like its distant snake plant cousin, dracaena is toxic to pets and children. So if you have small children or pets that might chew on the plant, please consider a different beauty-benefiting houseplant.

4. Rubber Plant: If you love Instagram’s favorite houseplant — the fiddle leaf fig — then you’ll looooveee the rubber plant, AKA rubber fig. Not only is it easy on the eyes, but it can also protect the skin against chemicals and other airborne pollutants too. “Rubber plants are great at purifying your indoor air,” Zenhausern says. “They not only absorb airborne chemicals but [also] break them down, [which] helps reduce indoor toxin exposure.”

Looks-wise, there are a variety of different rubber plants available, all of which have gorgeous, glossy leaves. If you want to keep this baby alive, be sure to place it in an area that receives a lot of bright, indirect sunlight. As far as watering goes, its soil should be kept moist in the summer months with frequent misting. If you don’t have a spray bottle, you can also wipe the leaves off with a damp cloth. In the winter — AKA the dormant season — water your rubber plant once or twice a month. (Photo via Oscar Wong/Getty)

5. Rose Bush: Think rose bushes are just outdoor plants? Think again. There are a number of varietals — Trader Joe’s is a great place to buy them — that can live indoors. And, get this: they boast beauty benefits too. If you have a knack for DIY skin care projects, a rose bush is the beauty-benefiting houseplant for you. “Rose petals, which can be placed in water to create rosewater, contain amazing skin benefits, including maintaining the skin’s pH and oil balance,” says Zenhausern. “[They] also contain anti-inflammatory properties [which is] a great treatment [for] skin irritation conditions like acne, dermatitis, and eczema.”

If you want to use your rose bush for DIY purposes, just pick off the petals and add them to a relaxing bath. The warm water will steep the petals, which in turn can benefit the skin. For those looking for something more advanced, a homemade rosewater facial spray is calling your name. You can also dry the petals, crush them, and add the mixture to a DIY sugar scrub.

To keep an indoor rose bush alive, be sure to keep the bush in an area that receives bright, direct sunlight for at least six hours a day. Rose bushes like plenty of water, so be sure to water thoroughly whenever the soil feels dry one inch below the surface. (Photo via Kusska/Getty)

Every part of my makeup routine — from my primer to foundation — is locked down, except for my boredom with my lip choice. Usually, the '90s makeup look I wear is the classic dark brown liner and gloss trend, but I've been itching to wear a little more color on my lips. I think it has everything to do with my infatuation with leopard print and wanting to lean into my own version of the mob wife trend that managed to make some people cringe.

Even if I don't spend the rest of the year decked in animal print, I want to wear bold shades and I know just who to turn to — MAC Cosmetics! They have everything from creamy satin to matte lipsticks that'll make your makeup and outfit look amazing. But, I'd rather show you what I mean, so let's jump into these 7 incredible shades!

Ulta

Locked Kiss Ink (Teaser)

This toasted warm nude has everyone's name written all over it because it's literally perfect for fall? Why? Well, it's more of a peachy color that won't make you look washed out if you use a contrasting brown lip liner. How dark you want to go is up to you, but gorgeous ombré effect will make others wonder how you achieve the perfect pout.

Mac Cosmetics

Frost Lipstick ("O")

No, I haven't lost my mind because one of the MAC lipsticks I'm thinking about buying is frosted. It's a purplish red that has golden pearl flecks that literally reminds of me a shiny copper penny. I'm sure I'm not completely deviating from my signature '90s lip look, but I'll be adding this in the center of lips instead of a nude matte lipstick! Once it's topped off with gloss, I'm sure it's going to mimic a beautiful fall sunset.

Nordstrom

Locked Kiss 24-Hour Lipstick (Ruby True)

Okay, I'm giving in because I know someone is looking for red lipstick that won't budge. Oh, who am I kidding? I'm the someone who can't stay away from this sexy shade. I don't care what season it is, it goes with everything you can think of. Plain t-shirt and jeans combo? Sure! Cute midi sweater dress and boots? Of course! That one date night outfit you've been saving for a special occasion? You bet!

Macy's

Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour (Carnivorous)

The name of this shade is fitting because it is spooky spooky season. I don't suggest you pretend like you're a hungry beast waiting for its next victim, but you could certainly pull this off when you're in a spicy mood. It'll take you from the boardroom to the bedroom (if you want) which will no doubt make someone say, "Wow, I love it here."

P.S. This theory may or may not have already been tested, but you didn't hear that from me!

Target

Lustreglass Lipstick (Spice It Up)

I'm a firm believer that not all fall looks require bold MAC lipsticks. Sometimes you need a touch of color that's soft and airy like this Lustreglass shade. Unlike matte or creamy formulas, this will keep your lips moisturized once you apply it. The color is also buildable so you can apply as much as you want, but I think a little goes a long way.

Nordstrom

MACximal Sleek Satin Lipstick (Film Noir)

Get away from this red completely and go for this deep cool brown shade if you dare. IMO, you can even save this for your scary Halloween costumesbecause it's the literal definition of BOLD. While I usually don't deeper brown lipsticks, I will use them as a lip liner because I'm not always a fan of using pencils, so this could be a neat trick you use in your routine!

Nordstrom

MACximal Sleek Satin Lipstick (Guessing Game)

Skip the bright red lipstick in favor of something deeper like this gorgeous shade. This is one of my go-to colors whenever I get tired of wearing a nude lipstick look because it's effortlessly sultry. Not only that, but it looks good on all skin tones which is important to me as a brown skinned woman!

Fans of Fourth Wing are on pins and needles because Rebecca Yarros just announced she's finished writing the third book in the Empyrean series! It's us, we're fans — along with over half of BookTok.

We can't believe we're getting closer to reading more about Violet Sorrengail's journey, but we know you have a ton of burning questions about the release date for Book No. 3.

We may not have all the answers, but we've done a little digging to share as much as we can because who doesn't want to know what Rebecca Yarros has been up to?

I'm new to the Empyrean series. Are "Fourth Wing" and "Iron Flame" really worth reading?

Amazon

I'm not going to lie to you. The editorial team, including myself, are extremely biased about Fourth Wingand Iron Flame. From my perspective, I think these are great books for anyone who had the pleasure of growing up during the great Harry Potter era and moved on to watchingGame of Thrones and House of Dragons.

Did she announce the name of book no. 3?

Rebecca Yarros/Instagram

YES! Book No. 3 is titled Oynx Storm.

Knowing what we do about the manifestation of Violet's powers, I think this could hint she's going to play an even larger role in the series. According to a fan theory shared on TikTok(via Empyrean Riders), it's believed that Violet and Xaden Riorson are actually gods. Stay with me here.

Empyrean Riders noted that Violet's last name means heavenly and that she's able to control time thanks to her connection to the young dragon Andarna (I love her so much!). That sounds pretty god-like to me.

And when asked which two Taylor Swift songs describe Onyx Storm, Rebecca Yarros chose "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" from The Tortured Poets Department and "So It Goes..." from Reputation. "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" is one of Taylor's most powerful songs and definitely translates the idea that Violet's powers are going to be stronger than ever, while "So It Goes..." is equal parts suspense and seduction, and is TOTALLY about "all the pieces fall right into place" to get together with the right person.

There's so much more to unpack so I suggest grabbing a yummy snack while you fall down the rabbit hole. All I'm sure of is that Onyx Storm is going to leave our emotions in shambles just like Fourth Wing and Iron Flame did.

When did Rebecca Yarros announce she's done writing book no. 3 in the series?

Rebecca Yarros/Instagram

On June 17, Rebecca Yarros shared this image of her laptop to indicate she'd finished the third book in the Empyrean series.

She wrote, "(Pic from one of the very many locations in which this book was written)," towards the end of the caption before adding a few relevant hashtags to it.

When will Onxy Storm be available for purchase?

Rebecca Yarros/Instagram

Rebecca Yarros exclusively told Good Morning America that fans can expect the book to hit shelves January 21, 2025! That gives us a little over six months to prepare our emotions for what's sure to be a storm of a book.

She said, "There will be politics, new adventures, old enemies and of course, dragons." There's no way she could forget the dragons because I'd willingly riot over them. They deserve to have their stories told forever.

As luck would have it, Cosmopolitan received an exciting first look at what's to come in Onyx Storm. The excerpt begins with Violet realizing the Venin have found their way into Basgiath War College and are wreaking havoc. Alongside Rhiannon, Sawyer, and Ridoc, she races to stop the Venin from releasing Jack Barlowe from his prison cell.

However, Violet's shocked when she discovered one of the "dark wielders" has a long silver braid that closely resembles her own. Before she can fully react, the woman disappears. According to Screen Rant, there are possible theories about why Violet saw her and what this means for her growing power.

Towards the end of the excerpt, Violet discovers the Venin want to capture her too. Also, Xaden makes his long-awaited appearance and it's clear their playful banter in the face of danger hasn't changed. That he hasn't fully changed into the Venin Violet's used to seeing.

I officially can't wait to read the rest of the book in January!

Has Rebecca Yarros revealed the cover for Onyx Storm?

Today/Bree Archer, Elizabeth Turner Stokes for Entangled Publishing

Onyx Storm

Yes!

TODAY received an exclusive look at the cover for Onyx Storm and it doesn't disappoint! Unlike its predecessors, it appears Rebecca Yarros is hinting that darker events will take place.

Fans of the Empyrean series aren't the only ones who are excited to see what fate has in store for our favorite characters though. In a statement to TODAY, Rebecca revealed how elated she is to be working on the series again. "It's amazing to be back with these characters again. She also said, ""I can't wait for readers to see what Violet, Xaden, and the rest of the quadrant have in store for them in Onyx Storm!"

One of the perks of being born in 1991 is getting to witness all of the gorgeous '90s makeup looks emerge and become popular again decades later. In my humblest opinion, some of them never went out of style because they're timeless and have a natural appeal that people keep gravitating towards. Don't believe me? Think about some of the makeup looks you've seen in Euphoria. They're so '90s-coded!

While it's hard to narrow down our favorites, but we think we've picked the best '90s makeup looks anyone can recreate for years to come. Here's what to try right now!

1. Sultry Makeup Look

If there's one thing Kaia Gerber's mom had on lock, it was the '90s sultry makeup look. Even today, Cindy Crawford continues to show why she was one of the OG '90s supermodels. You rarely saw her without intentionally tousled hair, a glossy and slightly metallic brown lip, and perfectly outlined eyes. Oh, and we can't forget her signature smile that she passed on to her amazing daughter!

2. '90s Lip

If there's one thing fans could count on singer Brandy Norwood to do, it was sing and play a convincing coming-of-age teenager on Moesha. But, her style was just as noticeable because she always wore the cutest braids and stunning '90s lip combo that's still popular today. Try as I might, I've yet to part ways with this makeup look because it looks good on everyone.

You'll need a dark lip liner, a nude matte lipstick or gloss to complete this look!

3. Brown Lipstick

There's a ton of iconic '90s makeup looks, but it seems like brown lip liner and lipstick had the girls in a frenzy! They couldn't get enough of it then and we're crazy about it now. Jennifer Anniston, America's sweetheart, was known for wearing a simple look that included brown lipstick that complemented her undertones.

All brown lipsticks aren't created equal, so we're sharing a couple of our favorite options!

3. Cherry Red Lipstick

We can talk about red lipstick all day, especially if it has something to do with Winona Ryder's cherry red version! Ever popular today, it's a bold way to liven up your makeup if you plan to keep the rest of your face simple. Plus, you can wear it year-round if you want!

What we've learned is that blue-red lipsticks tend to be more universal, so we're sharing the ones we think will bring your own cherry red look to life.

4. Doll Eye Makeup

We have nothing but the utmost respect for Pamela Anderson's decision to go makeup-free after decades of wearing it. Still, we'll always cherish the way her '90s makeup looks rivaled Barbie's. You'd always see Pamela wearing gorgeous eyeshadow that made you want to play in different palettes until you found the perfect combo to match whatever she wore on her eyes.

In honor of her doll eye makeup, here's a few makeup palettes that are guaranteed to give you a range of shades to choose from!

5. Sparkly Highlighter

Last but not least, we have to pay homage to the way Halle Berry looked like a perfect sparkly gem in the '90s. Her pixie haircut seemed to accentuate her cheekbones that had the perfect amount of glitter highlighter on it and we're obsessed with going back to the days where makeup literally glowed.

To achieve a similar look, you're going to need the highlighters we've chosen for you!

Kate Winslet is THE Hollywood actress to me. Not only has she starred in box office smashes like Titanic and Avatar: Way of Water, but she's proven her acting chops in breakout indie flicks and provided mothers and daughters everywhere with eternal Christmas movie nights thanks to The Holiday. But the actress' consistently viral kindness, her dedication to embracing her natural beauty, and her sophistication don't mean she always feels confident. Kate Winslet just spilled on the one movie from her career that had her "sh—ing" herself, and I just had to dive in.

Here's what Kate Winslet had to say about her scariest movie experience ever.

  • Kate Winslet made a name for herself with Titanic, Sense & Sensibility, and The Holiday.
  • However those movies aren't the film she wants fans to ask about!
  • The actress spills on the movies she's proud of, and the one job that had her "sh—ing myself."

Talking to Vanity Fair for her newest film Lee, Kate Winslet revealed one project she wishes fans asked about more is Iris. The 2001 film stars Kate as a young Iris Murdoch against Judi Dench's older counterpart. And for Kate, nothing was more terrifying than working with such a wonderful actress.

"People don’t really ask me about Iris. It’s such a delicate film," she says. "It was the first thing I had done after having my daughter. Going to work with a baby, I’m playing Iris Murdoch, looking to Judi Dench’s older Iris Murdoch — I was sh—ting myself."

Considering how nervous I get when I meet my heroes, I can only imagine what it was like to meet Dame Judi Dench. Talk about a dream! Another film Kate loves is Revolutionary Road, and not just because she got to reunite with Leonardo DiCaprio.

"The thing that people say is, 'You got to work with Leo again.' Then they go off on the whole Leo tangent, which I totally understand," she says of the film, which follows an ambitious couple who find themselves trapped in the reality of 1950s suburbia. "But Revolutionary Road — f—king hell, it just knocked us all sideways. Unbelievably difficult material. I was very proud of that film and what Leo and I were able to create as Frank and April. It was so brutal."

The process for getting Lee into the world sounds equally brutal, considering Kate started working on it over a decade ago. As producer, Kate tells Vanity Fair she doesn't mind the fact she's done more for the film than if she only had an acting credit. "That has felt very necessary for this film. But it’s also just really important to me," she says. "It’s important to me that people know that it’s out there and might feel compelled to go and see it."

Because it turns out, commercial success or stardom on its own doesn't actually help your movie get made! "It doesn’t matter who you are," she says. "No one’s going to go, 'Oh, I’ll just back that pony because she was in Titanic.' It doesn’t happen that way, and I never expected that. That’s really important to say."

"I've gotten older and I’ve learned more and felt more confident in myself about whether or not I could actually do it," she adds. "It’s not something I would’ve done had I not felt so passionately about the subject, and Lee was just—she wouldn’t let me go."
