How Honest Should You Really Be on Social Media?

From beachfront yoga at sunset to Champagne Boomerangs during “golden hour,” the average Instagram feed delivers a lot of covetable moments. Beauty vloggers show off empty bottles and tubs once filled with skincare products worth more than your monthly grocery bill, while fitstagrammers in fluorescent spandex rock the latest workout trends without ever letting you see them break a sweat. If you had to pick one word to associate with social media, it would be perfection: the perfect angle, the perfect filter, the perfect hashtag. But in response to concerns over feelings of inadequacy among followers, influencers are increasingly offering glimpses of the not-so-perfect reality behind their photos. The question is, will it help?

The power of social media authenticity

“Authentic social media can really even the playing field in a lot of respects,” says Desiree Wiercyski, a life coach for career-focused women. “Suddenly, everyone has a platform to speak their truth, with an audience that’s willing to hear it.” Wiercyski points out that being authentic on social media can be empowering, and can normalize the quirks that make people feel strange or different. Online, one vulnerable post about a habit or a fear might bring together an entire community of like-minded individuals.

Dr. Sal Raichbach, chief of clinical compliance at Ambrosia Treatment Center, notes that presenting yourself more authentically can also benefit your mental health. “Spending time doctoring up a lifestyle that is not true to the one that you have can add unnecessary pressure and stress… potentially leading to more serious complications, such as depression or poor self-confidence,” he says. It’s this sort of stress that led many influencers to begin stripping away the veneer of perfection in the first place.

Choosing where to draw the line

But there’s a fine line between speaking openly and oversharing, and it falls somewhere different for every social media user. “The key is deciding how much you want to share and being okay with whatever people are going to think and say about it,” explains Briana Bogue, staff therapist at the Council for Relationships. In other words, if the thought of posting about how you got over that breakup sends you spiraling back to a negative place, that might not be the right thing for you to share — even if you found a similar post really empowering.

“I recently posted about my personal struggle with body image and self-injury for National Self-Injury Awareness Day,” says Wiercyski. She explains that up until that point, she hadn’t talked about those things on social media. “[I] took back my power by using it to inspire others, versus leaving the topic up for hushed whispers amongst my followers as my scars can be visible in pictures,” she says.

Wiercyski isn’t the first to find power in speaking freely. In 2015, Sammy Nickalls created the hashtag #TalkingAboutIt on social media to encourage a more open conversation about mental health issues. Nickalls is one of many inspiring millennial women and femmes reinventing the conversation on mental health online. Engaging with a digital community like #TalkingAboutIt requires a leap of faith: You’re posting something honest and vulnerable that’s likely to be seen by people you know. But in return, you’ll gain the opportunity to connect with social media users who understand what you’re going through and want to offer their support. This kind of support network can be incredibly valuable when your mental health is suffering.

Engaging in mental health or recovery discussions online does come with some risk, however: “If someone else is posting about their struggles, there’s a higher likelihood of being triggered,” says Wiercyski. Since you can’t always anticipate how others will react to your posts, there’s also a chance of being triggered by comments — or even by an absence of engagement. “There is no need to put all of yourself out there to be judged by other social media users,” says Raichbach. “Doing so can absolutely trigger personal issues, such as being rejected, bullied, or abused.”

And Bogue points out that it’s also possible for mental health advocates to unintentionally trigger others. “You may want to be prepared to engage with them in a conversation about how you offended them,” she says. “You could learn something or change your views.” This is especially important in the context of bigger conversations, like the ones going on around Instagram and body positivity.

Staying true to yourself

Although honest social media posts might seem more “real” than, say, the aspirational breakfast bowls from far-flung wellness retreats, it’s still important not to compare yourself to others on your feed.

Wiercyski points out that when influencers open up about their struggles while still maintaining a highly curated page, it’s easy to feel like you don’t quite stack up. “There may be the idea of, ‘Well, they’re dealing with that and doing all these other great things, but I can barely manage this one thing,'” she says.

Remember that even honest social media posts are crafted for public consumption. Online, everyone has a persona. There’s no pressure make yours more honest — or more perfect — than you want to be.

What is We Live in Time about?

We Live in Time follows Almut (Florence Pugh) and Tobias (Andrew Garfield), whose lives intersect when Almut hits Tobias with her car. Whoops! What starts out as an accident transforms their lives as they fall in love and start a family. But when Almut's cancer returns, their hope for the future is put in jeopardy.

“When I read it, I just fell in love with the idea of getting to be in one of those movies that will matter to a lot of people, and will live for a long time," Florence told Vanity Fair. "And it’s about the simplest of things, which is that we are here, I personally believe, for one reason only: to love and be loved.”

“I think for a long time, I’ve wanted to find something that is not necessarily as hardened or as powerful as my other characters,” she continued. “I think this came at the right time in my life. I got to play a very, very normal woman who is talented in her own ways. The story is about the powerful love, and the powerful connection, between two people.”

1. Actually Use Your Planner In 2025

We're not buying pretty planners just so they can collect dust on our desks or coffee tables anymore. Corry Frazier and Melissa Pepin want you to get serious because they feel "it starts with planning." They don't mean the kind you eventually flake on either.

"Effective planning is key to maintaining balance and reducing burnout. Whether you're mapping out tasks, meetings, or events, dedicated time for preparation ensures focus and reduces stress," they say. In other words, "the more intentional you are in planning, the more productive you'll be," according to them.

Ever since I've been blocking out my tasks by hour in planner, I've been able to get more done without feeling overwhelmed by splitting my time between writing and being in mommy mode. Frazier and Pepin suggest that you "set weekly planning sessions" that consist of "30-60 minutes each weekend to map out your upcoming week."

This eventually "reduces decision fatigue, fosters a sense of control, and helps you start Monday with clarity and purpose," they add. Yes, this is a sign that you'll be breaking up with the dreaded 'Sunday scaries' if you follow their advice. "You'll feel proactive and grounded rather than reacting to the week as it unfolds," they agree.

2. Embrace A "Fake Commute" When Working From Home

One of Kayla Baum's tips is to switch up your routine if you're a remote worker. Rolling out of the bed at the last minute before logging on for work sounds appealing until you realize you're uninspired by your days. But, what is a "fake commute?"

"It mimics the structure of a traditional commute to establish a boundary between work and personal life. This could mean taking a walk around the block, doing a 10-minute guided meditation, or even just changing clothes at the end of the day," Baum mentions.

Based on her experience, she's found that "it works because it provides a psychological buffer, helping to separate work and home life." She feels it's "crucial for positive mental health and boosting productivity at work (and at home)."

You can also create a separate work space that's not in your bedroom to get work done! That's helped me tremendously so I'm not sleeping and working in the same area.

3. Focus On High-Impact Tasks

Similar to planning your work days as best as you can, Frazier and Pepin want you to "prioritize the tasks that align with your goals." To minimize distractions, they want you to ask yourself:

  • What is the most effective use of my time right now?
"For instance, if you're preparing for a big presentation at work, concentrate on immediate needs rather than getting sidetracked by unrelated projects. This approach helps you conserve energy for what truly matters," they suggest.

4. Stop Making Daily Decisions Hard

Tasks like your morning routine or figuring out what you'll eat don't have to take up a chunk of your time anymore. "Use productivity hacks, such as pre-planning meals or laying out weekly outfits," suggest Frazier and Pepin. They feel that "small routines like this eliminate unnecessary choices" to "make mornings smoother."

According to them, it's "especially helpful for families juggling multiple schedules." I couldn't agree more because I've spent so many frazzled mornings trying to make decisions about what myself and my toddler would wear or eat instead of planning them. With the help of my fiancé, we've cut so much time in half by being prepared ahead of time instead of 'winging it' before work.

5. Understand What Your Boundaries Are And Set Them

Worried that you'll be considered 'mean' if you tell your manager or coworkers what your boundaries are at work? Depending on your environment, it's 100% understandable. However, you're human and there's no reason you should be over-performing to your detriment. Frazier and Pepin say, "Set boundaries and communicate clearly. Adopt Brené Brown's mantra: 'To be clear is to be kind.'"

They encourage you to not only "be upfront about your schedule to manage others' expectations," but it's also so you can "avoid over-commitment." Say it with me: I will not make false promises just to appease others. Why?

Frazier and Pepin say, "Don't be afraid to say no to side projects or anything that doesn't align with your goals."

6. Ignore Emails Sent After Your Work Hours

I've been guilty of sending an email after work to acknowledge that I saw something, but I never expect other people to feel obligated to respond until the next business day. On the flip side, I've felt pressured to answer something that feels timely and I've gone to sleep thinking about the sender's potential follow-up email.

"Just because a coworker chooses to work late at night doesn't mean you must answer. One helpful trick is to include your working days and hours in your signature, explaining that responses may be delayed outside of those times," Frazier and Pepin say. They even have a prompt you can use if you're not sure what to type:

  • "My working hours are [Your Working Hours, e.g., 9 AM - 4 PM ET]. Please note that these may differ from your local time zone. I appreciate your understanding and will respond to emails during my working hours."

7. Please, log off from work when it's time.

Unless you're scheduled to work late, take the time to log off from work and not think about it until the next day. Baum says, "Commit to fully logging off once the workday ends—no 'quick email replies' or sneaking in work over the weekend." I'm eyeing you Ms. "I just need to send a quick email" while you're on vacation or spending time with your significant other.

Baum says creating this separation works because "fully disconnecting allows your mind to reset and recharge" which ends up "making you more efficient, creative, and focused during actual work hours." According to her, you'll eventually "improve personal well-being" and "enhance long-term work performance."

As soon as my work day is over, I make a beeline for the shower so I can decompress. After that, I take my time with my skincare routine and keep my phone out of reach so I'm not tempted to look at anything work-related. I'm not always successful, but I've noticed a difference in my mood since making this shift.

8. Speak Up When You're Feeling Overwhelmed

And if you're 100% drained because you've been trying to tackle work tasks during and after hours, Frazier and Pepin want you to speak up. "If you're feeling overwhelmed with your workload, approach your manager with honesty and a focus on solutions," they suggest. Here's another prompt of theirs you can use:

  • "I've been noticing that my workload has extended beyond regular hours, and maintaining balance is becoming challenging. Could we discuss prioritizing tasks or adjusting expectations to ensure I can deliver quality work without compromising my well-being?"
What this does is "frame the conversation as collaborative and proactive, encouraging your manager to work with you on a resolution," Frazier and Pepin observe.

Since the arrival of Patrick and Brittany Mahomes' new bundle of joy, fans started to notice something interesting about their kids. Aside from being cute as a button, each of them have very unique baby names. Instead of taking the conventional route, the darling couple decided to pick a theme that feels on par with Patrick's NFL winning streak.

According to E! News, Brittany talked about the theme for her kids names in 2023. While talking about her dogs, she mentioned their names. "I got steel in college and named him after that." Then she admitted she thought about naming their second dog "sterling cause it went with steel perfect."

However, thinking about her future children made her change her mind. "...one day I want that to be daughters name so then we came up with Silver to go with steel."

Once Patrick and Brittany named their first daughter Sterling, the dots connected once they had their son. "...having a boy and him being Patrick Mahomes III, Bronze was just meant to be and went perfect," said Brittany.

We can't wait to learn about the inspiration for baby Golden Raye's name although we have an inkling it still follows the theme of her siblings' names.

Funny enough, 'Bronze' almost had another name! Patrick told PEOPLE, "We were going with Trey at first because the third obviously and everything like that." He then shared his brother Jackson is the mastermind behind his son's name. "I started meeting more and more people with the nickname Trey, and Jackson came up to me and was like, 'What about Bronze?'"

He later said, "I haven't seen anybody else do that...I like it."
