How Powerful Institutions Protect Dangerous Men Like Larry Nassar

This week, just over a year after the #MeToo movement began to draw national attention, The Cut published a new report examining the forces that enabled USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar’s abuse of hundreds of young gymnasts for decades. Contrary to traditional narratives surrounding cases of systemic sexual abuse by people in positions of power, the report pointed out how Nassar — once a trusted and renowned doctor to US gymnasts — was able to abuse so many girls for so many years. The key factor was not the silence of his victims, but decades of institutional protection.

The Cut reported that hundreds of women and girls had spoken about and reported the doctor’s actions — to coaches, Michigan State University officials, USA Gymnastics, psychologists and physicians, and each other. Nassar, who was found guilty of seven counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct last year, maintained his status and position over the course of decades certainly through deceit and gaslighting of patients, parents, and coaches. But Nassar was also ultimately enabled by the active decision of people within institutions like Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics to protect him — at the expense of unsaid numbers of vulnerable women and girls, who, today, rank among some of the best-known, most accomplished athletes in the world.

The report exposed a tragic reality that is unfortunately buried in the media’s empowering narrative of women collectively breaking their silence about abuse in the #MeToo era: that for so many women through the years, silence was not the root of their problem. From top universities to tech companies to media outlets to American politics, powerful institutions’ protection of alleged abusers and/or prioritization of their reputations has cost unsaid numbers of women and girls safety and justice.

Months after Nassar and several Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics officials were indicted, and roughly around the same time the university announced it would pay more than 300 of Nassars’ victims $500 million, another university was in hot water for a case with eerie parallels.

This summer, the University of Southern California was embroiled in allegations tracing back to the 1990s that a former campus health center gynecologist, who was at one point the health center’s sole gynecologist, had sexually abused hundreds of female students, many of whom were international students. Nearly 150 accusers have filed lawsuits against both the doctor and the university, alleging that USC ignored their reports for years.

After an investigation by the Los Angeles Times, the university confirmed in May that Tyndall had been paid to leave following a complaint from a student in 2017. The university also confirmed that Tyndall had been the subject of eight complaints dating back to 2000. USC has, however, denied allegations that the university tried to cover up Tyndall’s history; Tyndall also denies wrongdoing. USC has nonetheless agreed to a proposed $240 million settlement with the doctor’s former patients.

And rampant, hidden sexual misconduct scandals aren’t exclusive to universities. Growing, male-dominated Silicon Valley startups have also become notorious spaces for sexual harassment and misconduct. Mass firings at Uber in the summer of 2017 followed the surfacing of allegations that traced back to the company’s 2009 founding.

Certainly, many work and education environments are not always supportive of people who seek to come forward about their experiences of abuse — that’s the whole basis of the #MeToo movement. It’s estimated that between two-thirds and 84 percent of sexual assaults are unreported, and for survivors who fear professional repercussions or threats to their safety for accusing powerful men — or any men, for that matter — speaking up can mean losing everything. But even in the spaces where women and survivors are able to safely speak up, men in influential positions are frequently given the benefit of the doubt at the expense of women’s perceived credibility.

In the case of the allegations of sexual abuse against then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh earlier this year, predominantly male US Senators and President Trump — who is publicly accused of sexual misconduct by more than 20 women, himself — discredited and dismissed allegations as a partisan conspiracy, and installed Kavanaugh on the court nonetheless. Accuser Christine Blasey Ford, meanwhile, faces ongoing death threats and has been unable to return to work for fear of her safety.

Over the past year, we have seen steps taken to address sexual misconduct in multiple areas. Facebook, Uber, Google and Microsoft have all ended forced arbitration policies, allowing employees filing sexual harassment claims to take complaints outside of the company to courts of law. The House of Representatives and the Senate have both passed legislation to reform reporting policies for those working for Congress who experience sexual misconduct.

But the harrowing stories of Nassar, those he abused, and the system that enabled him to hurt and traumatize so many are a dark reminder of the many ways power structures privilege the powerful.

Thanks to the eternal popularity of Gilmore Girls, we all know mother-daughter shows are some of the best around. And if you ask me, Ginny and Georgia are totally the next Rory and Lorelai. If you're looking for a new series to binge while getting cozy this winter, then look no further than Ginny & Georgia. It's got intrigue, it's got romance, it's got drama — which is exactly why it's one of the Netflix shows you should binge on a break!

Keep reading for everything you need to know about Ginny & Georgia season 3.

When does season 3 of Ginny & Georgia come out?

Brooke Palmer/Netflix

You can stream Ginny & Georgia on Netflix starting June 5, 2025.

What is Ginny & Georgia season 3 about?

Netflix

Ginny & Georgia follows the titular mother-daughter duo (plus Ginny's little brother Austin) who move from Texas to Wellsbury, Massachusetts after the death of Georgia's husband. But while a new town, a new school, and new friends can be complicated on their own, things get even messier in season 2 when Ginny discovers her step-dad's death wasn't an accident.

And at the end of season 2, Georgia's arrested for murder in the middle of her wedding reception. This was "always the plan," according to creator Sarah Lampert. "How we pitched season 1 and then how we ended our pitch of season 2 was, 'Then Georgia's married to Paul, they're having their first dance, and she's arrested for murder,'" she told People in January 2023.

"I'm blown away that the writers are still able to show us completely new sides of each character, and that's what you're going to see in season 3," actress Brianne Howey says. "You will see a lot of grit and hustle, but in an entirely new way. Georgia has to dig deeper into a part of herself we haven't seen yet. So, she has to use that grit in all new ways."

Who's in the cast?

Netflix

Ginny & Georgia stars Brianne Howey as Georgia Miller, Antonia Gentry as Ginny Miller, Diesel La Torraca as Austin Miller, Jennifer Robertson as Ellen Baker, Felix Mallard as Marcus Baker, Sara Waisglass as Max Baker, Scott Porter as Paul Randolph, and Raymond Ablack as Joe.

How old was Georgia when she had Ginny?

Amanda Matlovich/Netflix

Georgia was 15 years old when she gave birth to Ginny. This is another detail that reminds us of Gilmore Girls since Lorelai was 16 when she had Rory!

Where can I watch Ginny & Georgia?

Netflix

Ginny & Georgia season 3 is premiering June 5, 2025 on Netflix, which is where you can stream all 20 episodes of the show (10 in season one and 10 in season two). It's safe to assume that Ginny & Georgia season 3 will also have 10 episodes.

Mark my words, Materialists is going to be the next great rom-com. The summer movie follows a matchmaker named Lucy who finds herself torn between a handsome (and wealthy) stranger and an ex she can't let go of.

That sounds amazing in and of itself but the fact the trio is played by Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans? Sign me up.

Everyone knows that weddings can be chaotic, but no one ever expects a full-blown hostage situation. Bride Hard follows secret agent Sam, played by Rebel Wilson, as she takes on the role of Maid of Honor in her best friend's wedding.

The quiet luxury of European-inspired decor is having a moment, with relaxed linens, rustic plaster finishes, and earthy palettes leading the way. Jackie Kosnett and Martina Biegel, the design duo behind Galerie Design + Build, reimagined an outdated 1950s home in Mar Vista, Los Angeles, turning it into a stunning retreat inspired by their travels to Italy.

Originally a cramped two-bedroom with an awkward layout, the home included an unusual sunroom addition that felt more like a makeshift trailer.

Outdated wallpaper and years without a refresh left the home in need of a serious renovation. Also, those curtains!

1. Earthy Color Palette

Fresh off a trip to Italy, the principals infused the design with Mediterranean warmth, pairing clean contemporary lines with soft textures, rich materials, and an earthy, neutral palette. They repurposed the underutilized sunroom, relocating the kitchen there and turning it into a sleek, inviting space.

“We wanted to create a serene escape from the city through a neutral yet warm palette,” says Jackie.

Tessa Neustadt

In true Italian spirit, the kitchen serves as the heart of the home — designed with limestone, European white oak, plaster finishes, and unlacquered brass, anchoring the home's quiet luxury aesthetic.

The interiors were styled in collaboration with Neustadt-Studio, whose vision aligned perfectly with Jackie and Martina’s.

2. Vintage Decor

"From there we added vintage pieces from our own private collection, including a curved mohair sofa for a pop of color, Willy Guhl planters and a Pirman armchair by Heinz Julien," says Martina. I love the European inspiration and classic furniture design.

Tessa Neustadt

Blending old and new is a signature of Galerie Design + Build. Vintage lighting was thoughtfully layered in to bring character and a sense of history to the space.

3. Textured Materials

The pair could give a master class in layered neutral design. “Bringing in textured materials like leathered and tumbled natural stone, mixing different wood finishes, patterns in tile layouts or fabrics, and blending in vintage lighting and furniture will add depth while maintaining a neutral palette.” says Jackie.

Jordan Rodriguez

Limestone, European white oak, plaster finishes, and unlacquered brass continue throughout the home to add continuity.

Quiet luxury isn’t limited to neutrals — calming paint colors and vintage art can bring just as much serenity and sophistication.

4. Floral Accents

The floral bedspread has the charm of a classic Italian villa in summer — nostalgic in a beautiful way.

The result? A modern Italian-inspired sanctuary that balances simplicity and soul, right in the heart of Los Angeles.
